I am about to go mental trying to explain to my pals that no Emos do not in fact wear black lipstick, it's goths that do, but despite me showing them multiple things as proof they won't listen to me.
Anyway this has brought that people don't actually know the differences to my attention, so while I'm pissed off I'm writing the differences
Goths wear black lipstick, Emos tend to stick to shades of pink, or sometimes green or red. They tend to stay away from the dark colours on the lips because they will usually do their eyeliner as the thing they want to catch your attention first, therefore doing their lips dark colours would take the attention away from the eyeliner. (Or so I've been told by Emos)
Yes they both formed because of music genres but they are two different music genres.
Yes they both have subcultures but very different subcultures, for example with goths you have Romantic goth, Victorian Goth, Gothic Lolita, Pastel goth, Cybergoths, Hippie goth, Vampire Goth, Deathrocker Goth, Health goths, Casual goth, Deathrock & Bubble Goth (pretty sure I've missed a lot out). Well for emo there is Emocore, Midwest Emo, Emo Pop & Screamo (there is definitely more I just can't remember most of them)
Fun fact: Goths absolutely detested Emo Kids at the time of their rise in popularity, due to the confusion between the two scenes.
And that's all I'm writing for now because I'm busy, anyway have a nice 24 hours!

The history of gothic music and the goth subculture is actually pretty cool, because a lot of the time, gothic rock/metal fans were more in the subculture than the musicians themselves.
Black Sabbath - credited as being the first heavy metal band (which has a lot of similarities to goth, it's heavily influenced gothic music, go listen to Iron Man Right Now) - started because horror movies were big and they wanted to make music that fit the genre.
So, honestly, fuck people gatekeeping alt subcultures and claiming that it's all started on pure anti-capitalist radical ideas. It started because people wanted to make music. It started because people thought what if horror movies were songs. People in the subculture determine its growth, yeah. But the whole bloody point of alt is that it's just that, alternative.
My dad said something pretty cool about alternative music to my mom, when she asked why me and him liked alt music so much. He said that I probably liked it for the same reason he did. Normal culture is about conformity. Counter-culture is about non-conformity. He said that in alt scenes you can be more true to yourself, do what you want with less fear and shame.
So, yeah, maybe goth started with people wanting "creepypasta but the [music] version" (/ref), but it's evolved. Punk's evolved. It's all evolving.
