MASTERY JOURNAL REFLECTION

What are the key takeaways that will have the most impact on your experience as a graduate student?

After attending last night’s live GoTo meeting and re-watching it again, I truly believe that everything Dr. Cleveland discussed is vital to being a graduate student and I do believe all of it will be extremely beneficial for all of us to accomplish our Mastery Journeys’, but for me, I believe the following key takeaways are the most important that will impact my personal experience as a graduate student and my future as a graphic designer:

1. I’ve realized that being a graduate student is very different from being an undergraduate student. Our instructors are not here to hold our hands and give us step-by-step instructions on how to complete our assignments. We are now working at a higher, more intellectual level and we are expected to think for ourselves, think more logically and to take the lead when it comes to creating projects.

I have to admit that at times I feel I need my instructor to walk me through assignments which I know is wrong and will only hurt me in the future, but by asserting myself and being proactive when completing assignments, I believe it will build my confidence level and push me to be the best designer that I can be.

2. Working at a graduate level, we are here to master our design skills and to become as knowledgeable as we possibly can about the design industry. We need to work hard in each class, we need to fully comprehend what each of our classes are meant to teach us and we must push ourselves to become design experts through research, effective communication and by mastering various design tools.

Some students do their assignments, read or skim through the required reading material and move on, but they never really grasp what they’re supposed to learn. By truly comprehending what we’re meant to learn over the next year will be tremendously helpful for me to accomplish my goals and help me to master my life’s task.

3. When given an assignment to complete, we cannot just follow instructions; we need to go above and beyond what is expected and required of us by creating the best possible work that we can do. We need to exceed our limits of designing by expanding our creative thinking. We also need to learn how to come up with probable, executable solutions to design problems on a professional level by thinking outside the box and thinking more innovative.

I have always gone above and beyond what is required of me in school and work, but learning how to increase my creative and innovative thinking and learning how to resolve design problems on a professional level will help me to become not just a good designer, but hopefully a great designer who will be respected and valued in the design industry.

4. Working at a graduate level, we need to communicate effectively; when speaking and when writing papers.

My writing skills are good, but not great; but when it comes to public speaking, I’m terrified and I come off sounding very monotone; I do not sound natural what so ever. If I had to give a speech, most people would get bored listening to me and possibly fall asleep. Over the next year, I hope to overcome my fear of public speaking and by learning how to sound natural and engaging. If I can do this, I would be ecstatic. Anyone can be good or great at something, but if they cannot present themselves in a professional manner to colleagues and/or clients, the point(s) the person is trying to make won’t come across in their speech/presentation or others won’t take the person’s ideas seriously. This is definitely an important goal that I need to achieve over the next year.

What are some questions and/or concerns that you may have about the program that may impact your future success?

I don’t have any questions or concerns about the program; my only concern is that I fear I may have trouble finding a job in the future because of my age. That being said, I plan to master everything that I am taught over the next year so that when I start looking for work, my design skills and knowledge will supersede my age and employers will ONLY see the benefits that I can bring to their companies. Also, having over 25+ years’ experience in the corporate world doing various types of work on various levels should also benefit me as well when looking for work.

On a very positive note… I’m so excited because I recently read an article that New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy recently signed the most sweeping equal pay legislation in the nation. New Jersey now has the strongest equal pay law in the country.

Starting July 1, 2018, women that do the same jobs as men in all industries will be paid the same amount of money. This law will protect women and minorities. This is a law that we have been waiting to be put through for decades. New Jersey is one of the most expensive states in the nation and now that women and minorities will be paid the same as men, this is a tremendous victory and will be undeniably beneficial to many people and this will make a major impact on my future as a graphic designer.

My Action Plan

My action plan for the MDMFA program is to learn everything that I can possibly can from each course to become a great graphic designer. As I noted earlier, I go above and beyond what is required; I did just that while working towards my Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design and I plan to do the same for the Master’s program. I learned a lot while working towards my Bachelor’s degree and I’m hoping I learn just as much, if not more in the Master’s program. I think very highly of Full Sail University and the courses that they offer; that being said, I expect the next year to be difficult, but truly rewarding in regards to what we are taught.

To become a better designer, I’ve set some goals for myself (outside of the Master’s program classwork). I plan to do the following to expand my skills, creativity and knowledge even more to make myself STAND OUT as a designer…

Graphic Design Tips & Tricks

I plan to take the following Lynda.com courses – I will take one course per month:

Maxon Cinema 4D

Learning V-Ray

Illustrator for UX Design

After Effects (as a refresher course)

InDesign Secrets (as a refresher course)

HTML Essential Training (as a refresher course)

I plan on getting memberships to the following websites to stay up to date on the latest trends – I will view these websites every other week:

Smashing Magazine

CO. DESIGN

Graphic Design USA

Designhill

I plan to view and study the graphic design artwork of these top designers – I will view the works of these designers in my spare time:

Michael Bierut

And lastly, I plan on:

Entering competitions – I will do this during my spare time

Taking a class locally on Public Speaking - I will do this in my spare time

I may look for an internship prior to looking for a job – I will do this near the end of the Master’s program

(Please note: The goals that I’ve listed below may seem like they will take a lot of work, but I’m fortunate; my only job at the moment is being a full-time student at Full Sail University and my children are adults, so I can easily fit these goals into my schedule while also having a social life. I plan to achieve these goals because I’m determined to be the best designer that I can be!)

Long-Range Goals

In regards to my long-range goals, I positively know that I will NOT be doing free-lance work unless it’s creating artwork for family members and/or close friends. I’m not sure if I want to work at a design firm or work at a company that has an advertising department; it all depends on the company itself. As far as the type of work I want to do, right now my preference is print work, but that may change as time goes on.

I will say this… I have always had a dream of one day becoming a designer that creates something that becomes famous such as a logo, corporate branding, book cover, movie poster, etc. If one day I can create something like the Apple logo or the Louis Vuitton monogram, I would be on Cloud 9 and I would be one of the few that could honestly say that have I mastered my life’s task. If that doesn’t happen, it was never meant to be, but I will try to do the best that I can to fulfill that dream. I’m extreme persistent and tenacious and I believe these traits will truly help me in fulfilling my ultimate dream.
