Can we, as the Shadowhunter fandom, just collectively ignore that Christopher died in Chain of Thorns and move on as if that never happened? As in Christopher survived for whatever reason and everyone is happy? Is this too much to ask?

Sometimes I will be chilling and then I remember Grace Blackthorn and Christopher Lightwood and I start clawing at the walls.

Because like. Okay. Christopher grew up in a loving extended family. He's always been fully accepted for who he is, but he's never quite been understood. When it comes to his passion for science, even his best friends seem to be humoring him. Thomas assists him in the lab because he cares about Christopher, not because he cares about running experiments. Henry is the only one who really gets why Christopher cares so much about this stuff, to everyone else it's just something he's weirdly intense about.

Then there's Grace, who's been raised to see herself as nothing but a weapon. She's always been valued for her pretty face, and she knows for a fact that no one other than Jesse gives a fuck about her as a person (and even Jesse gives up on her in the end). She hasn't had the chance to find out who she is as a person or what she really cares about, because she's been trapped in Tatiana's net of abuse since she was a child. She wants to get free and do better, but she's basically got the choice of keeping up the lie and being seen as a decoration or revealing herself and being seen as a monster.

The first time the two of them meet, it's off-page. Christopher escorts Grace home in a carriage, and we get some jokes from the other Thieves about how he's probably talking her ear off. Again, there's the assumption that Christopher's interest in science is annoying and that Grace is a passive observer. But that's not the case! I love their relationship so much because Christopher finally finds someone who matches his enthusiasm and Grace finds someone who respects her intelligence. They're both able to be their most sincere selves with each other, and they're fully accepted for it. More than that, they're delighted by each other.

Part of what makes Grace's situation so precarious is that she knows that the things she's done on Tatiana's orders are wrong. She released James from the bracelet in ChoG when Tatiana was out of the picture, but she didn't explain the situation to him and she continued using her powers to manipulate Charles into breaking his engagement with Ari. She didn't want to hurt people, but she prioritized her own safety over any sort of honesty because she believed that if the truth came out they would all turn on her. Because she hadn't been allowed to have any relationships not built on manipulation, she had no one to support her if she tried to leave Tatiana. Plus, in ChoT we see that the one person who was supposed to really love her (Jesse) was still quick to turn on her when he learned the truth of what she'd done.

Once Grace gets sent to the Silent City, she wasn't expecting any sort of forgiveness. She could get pity, because she was an abused teenage girl, but she was still being defined by factors outside of her control. Then there was Christopher, who still came to visit her. It wasn't because he felt bad for her, it was because he remembered her intellect and genuinely wanted her help with his experiments. Yes it was an act of kindness to keep her company down there, but it was crucial that he also needed her help. Grace finally had a chance to be useful and do some good in the world thanks to her own interests and skills, rather than her looks and her curse.

I don't think that the people Grace hurt are under any obligation to forgive her. However, that doesn't mean that she deserves to spend her life being punished for the things she was forced to do as a teenager. Christopher is essential to her story because he proves that she's able to be loved and forgiven, that there's hope for her to find something good for herself beyond the reach of Tatiana's vendetta. The two of them don't need to be defined by how other people see them, they can start fresh and make something new together.

Also, I just think it's really cute to see two people bonding over a shared interest that is weird and confusing to others. They don't need to be palatable or understood by anyone else, because they have each other and their many exciting explosions.

No, but Gracetopher is Thomastair's tragic mirror and I think it's time we talk about it.

We have Alastair Carstairs and Grace Blackthorn. Both abuse survivors; both in unspeakable situations. Both people who have done horrible things at a young age because that's what they had to do to survive. Both very alone, with no one to love them but a sibling that they have a forced distance with.

Both perceived as monsters.

And then there are the Lightwood cousins, inseparable since birth. Thomas, a poetic dreamer with his head in the clouds, and Christopher, a scientific innovator who's well up there, too. (Both are also almost certainly autistic imo, but I don't want to derail this canonical analysis with my headcanons.)

They forgive.

And they're the first people in Alastair and Grace's lives to show them kindness, to reach out a hand and give them the grace they need to grow.

Thomas sees the best in Alastair, teaches him that he is loveable, that he deserves to be happy and share love, because love is the best thing we do.

And Alastair, as he deserves, is now "perfectly happy with everything exactly as it is." In Thomas's eyes, he has found hard-earned joy; he has found peace he never had.

Christopher sees the best in Grace, too. Where Thomas sees the pure and unfiltered love that Alastair holds, the selfless sacrificial affection, Christopher sees in Grace a will of iron and a beacon of strength. Grace, who has never been valued for anything more than her beauty, is finally seen as intelligent and passionate in Christopher's eyes. And, because she is these things, because he asks for the "honor of her opinion" and believes her "brilliant," she is, for a short time, herself.

And then Christopher dies.

Thomas and Alastair grow closer, and they have the chance to bring out the best in each other. Alastair opens up emotionally; Thomas becomes more confident. In the end, they become who they truly are because they find solace in each other. But Grace...

Well, Grace is right where Christopher left her. He left her no choice but to stay there forever, dust collecting on her pinned-up hair.

Without Christopher, she no longer has that mirror. She loses the only person to see her as she is - a strong, smart, brilliant girl with unfiltered and unlimited mental potential.

That's the tragedy of Grace Blackthorn. With a mirror, with those eyes (or crooked spectacles) that she could see her true reflection in, she too could have been happy. Alastair is the proof. But now, she does not get that. She is alone again. Dare I say that she is doomed by the narrative.

And yet. Yet.

There is a glimmer of hope, because Grace saw who she really is in Kit's lavender eyes, if only for a moment.

It's a far cry from Alastair's happy ending, and the story of Grace Blackthorn is in my opinion probably the most tragic in TSC.

But still.

She knows, deep down, that she can be more than a monster.

She can be a scientist.

Gracetopher Week 2024:

Hello everyone! Sorry for the late post. I got some questions about whether we were doing it this year, well here we are! Here are our prompts! All forms of media are welcome for the week (Ex: Fanfic, fanart, aesthetics, playlists, HCs, etc.), we're just happy to see people celebrate Grace and Christopher. This year we're going to try prompts instead of different forms of content like we did the last two (2022), (2023) years. Please tag your posts #gracetopherweek 2024 and or #gracetopherweek. Here are the prompts!

Day 1: Free Day

As an apology for not posting the prompts pretty late and not giving everyone a lot of time to prepare. Have an open first day to get started <3

Day 2: Christopher Lives

I think we all know he deserved better. This week we're pretending he and Grace lived happily ever after post CoT.

Day 3: Teaching/Learning

Doesn't necessarily have to be a skill of any kind, they could also just be learning different things from one another, whether it's general knowledge or character growth of some kind.

Day 4: Night ________

Sort of a fill in the blank prompt. Some examples: Night patrol, nightmare/night terror, night time, night out, etc.

Day 5: First

They didn't get enough moments together. Give them some classics! First dance, first kiss, first date, first "I love you". If you're a smut writer you know what I'm going to say. Be creative! Lots of relationships have firsts, including friendships, which gracetopher has a great foundation for (you could say they have chemistry). Have fun with this one!

Day 6: Grief

Doesn't have to be Christopher, just to clarify. This can be interpreted as a hurt/comfort prompt as well. Be as angsty or un-angsty(?) as you want. Have fun!

Day 7: New Beginnings

After Chain of Thorns, there's so much opportunity for these two. There are so many ways they could have had a future together. They're both obviously quite new to relationships too, so don't be afraid to make that part of this prompt too. Moving in together, making a discovery of some sort, creating their first invention, or even getting married, etc. are some examples for this prompt if you're confused. Have fun!

Saw Nosferatu for the second time today and probably will go for a third viewing, something I usually never do, but this just speaks to how much I’m loving it.

I was already having all sorts of thoughts on the Lucie & Grace necromancin’ gothic heroine implications and beginning to detect some vague Gracetopher parallels with the Ellen/Thomas relationship- but I JUST learned about the Orlok-Belial link and now I’m double intrigued. Something is cooking. This is too perfect an opportunity not to dwell on. Also you can’t tell me James doesn’t fit into this world to a T.

Kinda late with this but I'm rereading CoT and what if the Grace and Christopher thing in family tree would be expained in Titanic way like when someone asked Rose her name and she answered "Rose Dawson", so what if Grace didn't want to be Cartwright or Blackthorn for bad memories so she chose Lightwood?

Would be cute and heartbreaking
