Behind the Scenes of Army of Ghosts/Doomsday (Part 20)
Excerpt from SFX (Sept 2014 when “The Doctor and Rose say farewell at Bad Wolf Bay in Doomsday” won 1st place in their 250 Greatest Moments in Sci-Fi, Horror, and Fantasy poll to celebrate their 250th issue):
SFX: Revisionists would have you believe that Who was always a show with emotional impact, but barring a couple of companion departures that didn’t really become true until Russell T Davies. His most heart-destroying contribution was this scene, in which a holographic projection of the Doctor talks to a tearful Rose on a Norwegian beach (actually Southerndown, South Wales), with the signal cutting out just before the slow-coach can declare, “I love you”. It’s a moment everyone can identify with because, as Davies put it, “There’s an echo of every loss you’ve ever had.” We’ve all had to bid farewell to someone we care about even if it wasn’t forced upon us by the threat of universal destruction and this moment perfectly encapulates the agony of break-up.
Russell T Davies: Thank you! I’m not often speechless, but that’s quite astonishing. All I can remember about that day is everyone rushing like mad to get it finished because the tide was coming in. Camille Coduri had to stand on wooden planks in case she sank. But what a cast - David and Billie are simply magnificent. All directed with joy, energy, and madness by Graeme Harper. I’m genuinely surprised that it means that much to people, after all this time, and thank you to everyone who voted.
David Tennant: I remember worrying on the day we shot this that as I was actually a projection from inside the TARDIS my hair shouldn’t be blowing in the wind. That seemed terribly important at the time and although we didn’t find a solution to it, it bothered me for weeks. Then I saw the finished scene and of course all that matters is the end of the Doctor and Rose’s story. Russell had weaved some glorious magic for two seasons and it all came together so perfectly in this scene that people still talk to me about it with misty eyes all these years later (and I suspect they always will.) Murray Gold created some heart-stopping music that accentuates the misery and Billie is just breathtakingly good. I feel very lucky to be standing on that beach, with my hair flying around, in amongst all these brilliant elements. Whatever else I do and wherever else I end up, this will be a moment I will forever be proud to look back on. Thanks for having us at number one.

Rhys is wearing a pounamu necklace in the toki/adze shape (Thanks to ClaireGregoryAU on twitter!)
Greenstone - Whakatane, New Zealand By Graeme Murray
The legend of Pounamu
According to the people of Ngāi Tahu (a South Island tribe), Poutini was a Taniwha (giant water being) who swam up and down the seas of the West Coast, protecting both the people and the mauri (life force) of Pounamu.
One day while resting in the warm waters off Tuhua (Mayor Island), he saw a beautiful woman bathing in the sea. Her name was Waitaki. Full of admiration, Poutini snatched her and fled south towards his mainland.
Waitaiki's husband, Tamaahua, was a powerful chief. When he realised his wife had been taken, he threw a magical dart in the air. The dart pointed in his wife's direction, and he paddled after them in an unrelenting pursuit.
Realising that Tamaahua would not rest until he reclaimed Waitaiki, Poutini decided the only way to keep her forever was to turn the woman into his essence. The taniwha transformed Waitaiki into Pounamu and laid her down within the riverbeds of the Arahura River.
When the chief discovered his wife turned to stone in the riverbed, he let out a tangi - a tremendous song of grief. If you listen closely in New Zealand's deep south, you may still hear it echo through the mountains.
Symbols and designs
More than just a beautiful art form, pounamu can represent ancestors, connection with the natural world, or attributes such as strength, prosperity, love, and harmony.
Toki: The toki (adze) is a type of blade, is associated with determination, control, strength, focus and hope.
Koru: The graceful koru represents a native fern unfurling and symbolises new life, new beginnings, hope, personal growth, purity nurturing, a new phase in life, the spirit of rejuvenation and peace.
Hei matau: The fish hook design signifies a connection to the moana (ocean) and brings the wearer good luck and safety while travelling.
Tiki: Hei-tiki designed as a pendant in human form, it symbolises strength and enduement. Usually passed down from generation to generation. Each piece carries a mana (prestige) that increases with each new bearer, with the most precious having known histories stretching back into time.

Work Text:
You’ve spent your whole life with people around. It’s never quiet, not even in your own mind, and that’s always been a comfort. No matter where you are, there’s always been your people, experiencing their joys, sadness, anger, it makes it hard to feel alone. Impossible, really.
Did you wonder how people without telepathy did it? Survived in a world where they were isolated, alone in their minds, how could anyone manage it? Or did you feel it, that connection despite the lack of it, groups of people, connected by something deeper than telepathy, is that what you felt with your people, your telepathy only heightening the bonds?
Lots of creatures work in packs. It’s a dangerous world out there, they form groups to live. Time Lords can travel further than anything else, through time itself, yet in your mind you are never alone, you have your TARDIS, you have your people, always in your mind, living their lives so deeply entwined in yours.
The humans have their telephones, they have their organisations, they have their groups, their bond is as deep as any telepathy can give them.
And you felt it too, didn’t you. That connection.
And felt is the key word, isn’t it. Past tense.
It’s quiet now.
The wall is cold beneath your fingers, against your cheek. The room is quiet, it’s so quiet , you can’t bring yourself to make a noise, you can’t bring yourself to move, to break the eerie stillness of this place.
You haven’t felt that same connection with humans, have you. You empathise with their emotions, you love them so deeply, you’re fascinated and in awe of them — their curiosity, their teamwork.
And yet, you are the outsider. You are the one pointed out in photographs for being out of place, you are the one who stands in a crowd and feels more alone than you thought you could.
You are the one who invited Rose Tyler to come with you; you are the one who reached out a hand to Lynda-with-a-Y and told her to come with you; you are the one who stood in a church and told those brilliant, wonderful, fantastic humans that you would save them.
You are the one who is left alone.
You are the one who feels the cold wall, and hears the deafening silence.
You are the last one left. You are the one who is alone.

Unearthed Titanic Iceberg Photo Gives Rare Glimpse At Giant Ice Rock That Sank 'Unsinkable' Ship
The historic image shows a large glacier oddly shaped like an elephant above the surface of the north Atlantic two days after the luxury liner struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage and sank
— By Graeme Murray | News Reporter Paul Vass | 13 April 2024
A newly unearthed photo of the iceberg that sank the Titanic gives a rare glimpse at the giant ice rock that forced the 'unsinkable' ship to snap in two.
The black and white image was captured by an undertaker working on the body recovery ship that arrived on the wreck site in the aftermath of the sinking. It shows a large glacier oddly shaped like an elephant above the surface of the north Atlantic and was taken two days after the luxury liner struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage and sank with the loss of 1,522 lives. The photographer, believed to be funeral director John Snow Jr, later put the snap in a cardboard mount and simply captioned it 'Titanitic' (sic).

Mr Snow's father ran an undertakers in Nova Scotia and when news of the tragedy broke he and his staff of embalmers were summoned to Halifax. They boarded the cable-laying ship the Mackay-Bennett which was loaded with 100 coffins and 100 tonnes of ice to preserve the bodies.
They had set off for the wreck site 800 miles away and arrived four hours later on April 17, 1912. The crew began their grim task the next morning. In all they recovered 306 bodies from the sea. Those identified as first class passengers were embalmed on the ship and placed in coffins. These included the bodies of John Jacob Astor IV, the richest man aboard and Isidor Straus, owner of Macy's department store.
Second class passengers were embalmed and wrapped in canvas and some 116 third class passengers and crew were buried at sea. The ship returned to Halifax seven days later with 190 Titanic victims. The 5ins by 3ins photo of the iceberg was passed down through the Snow family until it was acquired by a collector of Titanic memorabilia about 30 years ago. It is now coming up for sale at Henry Aldridge & Son Auctioneers of Devizes, Wiltshire for an estimated price of £4,000 to £7,000.
Another Picture of an Iceberg Taken by Captain Wood That Sold in 2020. Image: BNPS
Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: "Nobody can say for sure that this was THE iceberg that sank the Titanic. But what we can say is that after the rescue ship Carpathia, the Mackay-Bennett was one of the first ships to reach the wreck site and that the undertaker on board decided to take a photo of this iceberg.
"He must have had his reasons for taking a photo of this iceberg. He captioned it Titanic and mounted it for posterity. It hasn't been sold before and was acquired directly from Mr Snow's family by our vendor in the early 1990s. It is an extremely rare photograph and we are sure it will attract a lot of interest."
The 'unsinkable' Titanic was speeding through an ice field in the north Atlantic when it struck an iceberg at 10.20pm on April 14, 1912. Lookout Fred Fleet struggled to spot the glacier at first because the water was so calm that no waves were breaking at the base of it which was a tell-tale sign of one.
The liner sank at 2.20am on April 15. A photograph of another iceberg that could also have been the one Titanic struck on the night of April 14, 1912, has been seen before. That was one taken by a crew member of the Minia, another body recovery ship which arrived on the scene on April 22 - a week later.
And in 2020 a photo of an iceberg that was taken two days before the tragedy by the captain of a passing passenger liner sold at auction. Captain W. Wood was on the SS Etonian and he noted the geographic coordinates of the glacier which were almost the same for when the Titanic floundered 40 hours later. The latest photo is expected to be sold on April 27.
Another view of what appears to be the same iceberg that may have sunk the Titanic that is seen in a photograph up for auction this month. This image (above) was owned by Captain De Carteret, the Captain of the CS Minia which was sent to recover bodies from the wreckage site in April 1912.

6. Was there anything you meant to read, but never got to? so many! i have a bad habit of borrowing too many books from the library but one in particular is polar affair which is a nonfiction book about how knowledge and research of the sex lives of penguins by gavin murray levick (who was the first recorded man to study them upclose) was surpressed.
there are three books i haven't read/finished that i am determined to get done by the end of the year: mammoths of the gates, a house with good bones, and hildegard of bingen: a woman of her age.
9. Did you get into any new genres? i've dipped my toes in most genres already but i did read considerably more horror than i usually do and i've managed to read every book (excl. mammoths at the gates lol) in nghi vo's singing hills cycle.
16. What is the most over-hyped book you read this year? i don't tend to read a lot of hyped-up books because i use my library and thus tend to avoid the big stuff. but one book i over-hyped in anticipation was case study by graeme macrae burnet!! it was on the short list for the man booker prize and the first book i read this year and it was SO underwhelming. i had high hopes for it because i really like burnet's other book, his bloody murder, and i felt he explored authority really well there but in case study, which explicitly looked at anti-psychiatry and psychology, there was little of that. it turned out to be a novel about some grifter instead of an interesting inquiry in the power of psychiatrist and was wholly underwhelming.
thank you!!!

Echuca prepares for double peak flood to start the week
We expect a flood peak of about 95 metres, which is higher than the Great Flood level. Again, we expect a similar amount of property… to be under threat from this great flood level for at least three to four days.”
Colin McCain, whose home overlooks the river, said the water level rose one meter in less than 24 hours. In the parks on the side of the river opposite his house, the children’s playground was almost completely submerged, only the yellow plastic top of the slide was visible.
CFA, Army and Air Force crews are helping with the massive sandbag effort.attributed to him:Erin Johnson
Echuca is the closest town to the junction of the Campaspe, Goulburn, and Murray rivers.
There are growing concerns in the city that after the tops of the Campaspi flood, the Goulburn River will bring in flood waters from Shepparton and Moropna.
Then, the flood waters would rush into the Murray River, which wraps around Icoca and is fed by the other two rivers.
Graeme Glanville worked all night to save his home in Echuca.attributed to him:Bianca Hall
On Ogilvy Street, part of the Murray Valley Highway, residents made a miraculous effort to salvage homes as the swollen Campasby River flowed downstream and flowed sideways.
The highway was closed, effectively cutting Echuca in two, as a high earthen dam was built on one side of the road to hold water from the broken riverbanks from the houses on the other side of the road.
On the side of the embankment, the houses were in the level of a meter of water.

Usually a road separates the Graeme Glanville house from the river. On Sunday, this road was a line in the sand that residents were determined to keep.
Glanville and his neighbors began laying sandbags on the side of the road a week ago. On Saturday night, he worked all night to reinforce the defenses of his home and those of his neighbors.
When he came home about 6:30 a.m. ready for bed, he saw the water begin to rush around the back of his house, around the sandbag defences. “Water was little at that time,” he said.
He borrowed a pump, but within minutes the pump was covered in water. A second pump was carrying the water over the sandbags and back into the overgrown river system, holding the row. So far.
In the 2011 floods that swept through Echuca, the Campaspi River peaked at 92.85 metres. But Murray is higher than it was in 2011, which makes locals nervous.
“It’s definitely a lot higher than it was last time, and it’s still climbing,” said Greg Southern, whose backyard and barn were flooded on Sunday. He hoped, but was not sure, that his house would stay dry.
“this is [flooding] It is the Campaspi effect, and then they say in the middle of the week that Goulburn is going to collapse.” Then Murray. Everything leads to the Murray River, all the waterways, so Murray adjusts it.”
