"RELIGION GUARDS THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES"
by Ever
Like so many street artists Nicolás Romero, aka Ever, was into hip hop, skateboarding, and graffiti when he started painting on the streets of Buenos Aires, but five months studying in Paris changed his path dramatically. His painterly art often seems more like something you'd find in a gallery and while he prefers to paint ordinary people, @Graffitimundo says his style gives "importance to the inconsequential" and leaves viewers a sense of walls "imbued with an unintentional gravitas." “When people look at my portraits, sometimes they think there is something holy or they are a tribute," Ever told Buenos Aires Street Art. While that's not usually the case, when Ever found himself painting in the City of the Angels in 2013 it made sense to make something of an exception. This portrait of religion is at Zynderia Studios on Naud St. where Chinatown meets the Los Angeles River.  @eversiempre

On the road: Buenos Aires, Argentina
Last April before moving out of Singapore I took a very last minute business trip to Buenos Aires. I’ll admit that even though I was dying to visit I was more than a little stressed at the time - I somehow had to fit this trip in the very short time between returning from Bhutan and heading to Margaret River while also securing my upcoming UK work visa at the same time! Took some serious logistic planning and a super expedited visa but all worked out in the end and with luxurious 24 hours to spare I had my passport back in hand from the embassy before heading to Changi airport.
After my 30 hour flight (yes, 30 hours of flying time between Singapore and Buenos Aires, with stops in Qatar and Brazil!) I finally touched down in Argentina and stepped on to South American soil for the first time, checking continent #6 off my list. Side note: I happened to be sharing a plane with both the Argentinian and Kenyan rugby teams who were departing after the Singapore 7s match. Sounds like a dream but honestly I was in my comfy Qatar Airways pajamas and thoroughly enjoying my sleeping pill.
What a place to get my first taste of South America! BA is the second largest city in South America and very European in appearance. I could easily see why it’s been nicknamed the “Paris of South America” - romantic old buildings, countless cafes, tree-lined streets, an appreciation for the good life. But the city also has an amazing energy, passionate people and incredible food. It seems like it will never go to sleep - not unusual to be out for dinner at 11pm - but it is a city that certainly doesn’t want to wake up the next morning either.
Where I stayed: the gorgeous historical Palacio Duhau in the Recoleta neighbourhood.
What I ate/drank: Ceviche and nigiri at Osaka (Palermo); some much needed veggie juice at Factory Juice (Recoleta), a spicy La Tevez burger on the back patio at the Burger Joint (Palermo); Persicco ice cream (Palermo); drinks amongst some incredible street art at Post bar (Palermo); coffee and alfajores at Felix Felicis (Palermo); provoleta, olives and bife de chorizo at La Cabrera (happy hour 7pm 40% off, Palermo); wine and cheese at Los salones del Piano Nobile (Palacio Duhau Recoleta); café con leche and churros at Café Tortoni and plenty of Malbec. Argentineans eat super late so be prepared to have dinner at 10pm! You'll also find they love their coffee black but served with the sweetest pastries and dulce de leche.
What I did: an awesome street art tour with Graffitimundo around Palermo and Colegiales; enjoyed the sun in the Parque Las Heras; browsed through the open air book shops at Avenida de Sante Fe; toured Museo Bellas Artes; La Casa Rosada (the "White House of Argentina"… except it's pink, where Madonna re-enacted Eva Perón’s addressing of the crowds of workers in Evita) and Plaza de Mayo; Puerto Madero; a day trip to Colonia del Sacramento in Uruguay and explored the incredible Recoleta Cemetery (go inside the church up to the cloisters for a good view) - it might seem a bit morbid to visit a cemetery for pleasure, but Recoleta is one of the city’s most visited attractions. The cemetery is the final resting place of many of the city’s most notable citizens, including Eva Perón.
What I read to get in the mood: 'Cartwheel' by Jennifer Dubious
