Grand Duke Serge Alexandrovich and the Hessians
The main reason I like this picture is that Ella is smiling in a very different, spontaneous way. Her eyes are involved in the smile. She has not turned into the “ethereal” beauty yet. I don't have a date for the picture. It might be around her engagement to Serge.
In the picture, from left to right: A very young Ernst Ludwig with a pup under each arm, Ella with a little girl in her arms whom I don't know; sitting on the steps in front of Ella, Princess Victoria, standing by Ella, Princess Alix, sitting right in front of Alix, the Grand Duke Ludwig IV, and sitting next to him, Grand Duke Serge.
There are two young women in the photo, one sitting next to Victoria and the other standing behind Sergei, whom I do not know.

TRAGEDIES OF PRINCE FRIEDRICH'S DEATH 😭💔
Tumblr media
In late May 1873, 5-year-old Ernest and 2-year-old Friedrich, The only sons of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse, and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom, were playing together in their mother's bedroom.
Ernst ran to another room, which was set at right angles to Alice's bedroom and peered through the window at his younger brother.Alice ran to get Ernst away from the window. When she was out of the room, Friedrich climbed onto a chair next to an open window in his mother's bedroom to get a closer look at his brother.
The chair tipped over and Friedrich tumbled through the window, falling 20 feet (6.1 m) to the balustrade below. He survived the fall and may have lived had he not had haemophilia. He died hours later of a brain hemorrhage💔
The tragic death of little Friedrich devastated his entire family... especially his mother and his beloved brother Ernest...
Following Friedrich's death, his distraught mother princess alice often prayed at his grave and marked anniversaries of small events in his life.
Prince Ernest was deeply affected by the death of his younger brother Prince Friedrich of Hesse, he was inconsolable and said to his mother "When I die, you must die too, and all the others. Why can't we all die together? I don't want to die alone, like Frittie." He also blamed himself for his brother's death and felt guilty for the rest of his life. He later wrote in his memoirs, "I have never been able to rid myself of the impression that I was to blame for my brother's death."
Three years after Friedrich's death, on January 22, 1876, Princess Alice noted in a letter to her mother, Queen Victoria: Yesterday morning Ernie came in to me and said, "mama, i had a beautiful dream; shall i tell you? I dreamed that i was dead and was gone up to heaven and there i asked god to let me have Frittie again, and he came to me and took my hand."😭
Of course, this wasn't the last tragedy of Prince Ernest's life, In the near future, he witnessed the heartbreaking death of his mother and little sister due to diphtheria, the death of his beloved daughter Elisabeth due to typhoid fever, and finally the brutal death of his two beloved sisters, Elizabeth and Alix by Russian revolutionaries... 😭😭😭

118 years since the wedding of HRH Prince Andreas of Greece and Denmark to HRH Princess Aliki of Battenberg in 06–10–1903

Princess Alice was considered to be the most beautiful princess in Europe. At the age of 17 she met Prince Andrew of Greece while in London for King Edward VII’s coronation. They were married in a civil service on 6 October 1903 at Darmstadt in the state of Hesse, Germany, followed by two religious services: one Lutheran and the other Greek Orthodox in the Russian Chapel. The bride and groom were both closely related to the ruling houses of the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, Denmark and Greece. They settled in Athens, Greece, and Prince Andrew continued his career in the military while Princess Alice or Princess Andrew as she was also known as it was customary for a princess to take the name of her husband, became involved in charity work. The couple had four daughters and one son, Prince Phillip, who later married Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom
Alice and Andrew on their religious wedding day in Darmstadt .
Bellow an article originally appeared in the New York Times on 8 Oct 1903
Darmstadt, Oct. 7
In the presence of a notable gathering, which included an Emperor, an Empress, a King, and two Queens, the marriage of Princess Alice of Battenberg and Prince Andreas of Greece was celebrated today according to the rites of the Lutheran and Greek churches.
In the guest list was the bride’s aunts, uncles, and parents at the wedding Grand Duke Ernst of Hesse and by Rhine, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, Princess Irene of Prussia, Prince Henry of Prussia, Grand Duchess Elisabeth Feodorovna of Russia, Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich of Russia, Princess Louis of Battenberg, and Prince Louis of Battenberg
The wedding party, whose dresses and uniforms made a very effective spectacle, assembled at 3:30 in the old castle, and then crossed the castle yard to the castle church. Prince George of Greece with Princess Victoria led the procession, and they were followed by the Grand Duke of Hesse , with the Czarina [6]; the Czar , with Queen Alexandra the members of the Greek royal family, and finally Prince Louis of Battenberg , with his daughters, the Princesses Alice and Louise
The church was filled with diplomats, the local authorities, and the royal suites. The Protestant ceremony lasted three-quarters of an hour, the officiating clergyman being the Rev. Dr. Petersen. The party then, amid the ringing of the famous chimes, drove in reverse order to the Greek chapel, a mile distant on the Mathildanhohe, where they were greeted by a large crowd. There the marriage ceremony was celebrated according to the Greek rites by Archpriest Janitcheff, a Russian choir performing the musical service. All then returned directly to the palace.
The bride wore white crepe de chine, with orange blossoms, and a bodice of Point de Venise lace
and wore the diamond tiara that may have been her wedding gift from her uncle and aunt,
and a diamond circle-and-star necklace that’s said to have been a wedding gift from her mother
Tsar Nicholas II and Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia
Queen Alexandra was dressed in purple tulle, with sequins, and had a diamond diadem. The Czarina wore a gown of white tulle embroidered with silver, and wore a Russian diadem. The Queen of Greece was in gray satin.
A family dinner was held this evening, with forty-two covers. Afterward the wedded couple started in a motor car, presented by the Czar, for Heiligenberg Castle on a short honeymoon.
The gifts to the bridal couple include a massive silver epergne from the King and Queen of England and a magnificent diadem of brilliants from the Czar and Czarina .
The civil marriage of Prince Andrew and Princess Alice took place on Tuesday.

"SECRETS IN OIL: UNVEILING THE PRINCESSES OF SAXE-COBURG" ♥️👑🖌
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Heinrich von Angeli: The Royal Brush and the Royal Sisters' Gaze" 🖌🌞🌏
Princess Victoria Melita of Edinburgh, Grand Duchess of Hesse, is shown looking to the left in a pale blue dress with lace over her shoulders and a rose at her breast. 💙✨️
This portrait was painted for Queen Victoria, who was Princess Victoria Melita's grandmother. In 1894 Victoria married her first cousin, Ernest Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse, following the wishes of their shared grandmother, Queen Victoria, but their marriage was a failure and Victoria went on to scandalize the royal families of Europe by divorcing her husband in 1901 and marrying her first love, Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia, in 1905.
Princess Alexandra of Edinburgh, Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, is shown with head and shoulders to the front, in evening dress with a fur-edged wrap. 💖✨️
The third daughter of Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia, she was married in 1896 to Prince Ernst, of Hohenlohe-Langenburg. This portrait was painted for Queen Victoria, who was Princess Alexandra's grandmother.
"As we admire this artwork, let's reflect on the lives of Victoria Melita and Alexandra. Born into a lineage that intertwined with the most powerful dynasties of Europe, their stories are woven into the fabric of history. Victoria Melita, a granddaughter of both Queen Victoria and Emperor Alexander II, led a life marked by scandal and romance, defying royal norms to marry the man she loved. Her sister Alexandra, though less known, shared in the family's complex web of alliances that shaped the course of European history.❤️
So, as you behold this masterpiece, ponder this: What secrets do the serene faces of Victoria Melita and Alexandra hold? What whispers of the past might echo through the halls of their royal lineage? Angeli's painting is not just a visual delight; it's a silent testament to the tumultuous and fascinating era it represents. Dive into the depths of this canvas and discover the stories that lie beneath the surface."🫀👑
