On todays #paleostream MONKEY CRUISE RETURNS
With Ekembo and Pachylemur
For those who don't know, #MonkeyCruise is a series of paintings in which I turn classic positions from art history into paleoart pieces with extinct primates.
The Ekembo piece, as you probably have guesses already, is a homage to Leonardo da Vinci's "Last supper". One of his most famous works. I had my eyes on this for a while but only recently had an idea what to depict it with.
Tumblr media
Ekembo is a great ape from the Miocene that was found on Rusinga island, Kenya. There wer volcanoes in the area which they also snuck into this piece. The apes here are gathering on this log because a migrating ant colony is crossing it, a welcome snack bar.
Tumblr media
The second piece is based on a painting by Finnish painter Eero Järnefelt, called "Under the Yoke".

Pachylemur was a large lemur from the Holocene of Madagascar, it#s extinction is most likely human caused. Two causes are shown here: habitat loss, thanks to slash and burn agriculture and bush meat hunting.

orangutans and gibbons often get along well with other species, so it makes sense that they'd get along so well together.

Christian Ziegler's incredible photo which has been selected as the Highly Commended image in the Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year 58th competition.
Christian had been tracking the group of bonobos "chest-deep through flooded forest" in the Salonga National Park for days when he spotted the young male holding a juvenile mongoose in his hand.
"I was so surprised to see how he carried the mongoose with such care. I immediately started to follow him and document it," he told BBC News. The ape held and stroked the small mongoose for over an hour, he said.
It is not uncommon for bonobos to capture small animals to keep as pets for short periods of time before either eating or releasing them, and it may even be a status symbol among bonobos to hold onto another animal for a while to show off.

†Homo floresiensis
Art credit: Julio Lacerda
This hominin species was endemic to the Indonesian island of Flores from 100,000 to 60,000 years ago. Because of a phenomenon known as insular dwarfism, where island animals grow smaller due to less available food, H. floresiensis grew to a height of only 3 ft 6 in (1.06m) tall, giving it the species nickname of hobbit. They likely had a similar generalist diet to us, and are known to have crafted stone tools to help them hunt. They lived alongside other prehistoric inhabitants of Flores, including cattle-sized relatives of elephants, rabbit-sized rats, human-sized storks, and Komodo dragon lizards.
