Mumblestar is killed after WindClan launches a surprise attack on the RiverClan camp. Violetpatch, a queen, is killed during the battle. Her kits mourn her with a vengeance towards WindClan, raised by Tinyfeather and then Starlingpelt afterwards. Leopardpaw and Minnowpaw kill Cricketsong of WindClan during the battle. Applewish becomes Applestar, and appoints Rushheart as deputy. After the battle, Applestar makes the two apprentices warriors named Leopardear and Minnowrose. A few moons later, Patchpaw and Kinkpaw become Patchcloud and Kinkflower. Tinyfeather returns to her warrior duties as her kits become apprentices, Specklepaw trained by Bouncepool, Nightpaw by Thornsong, Juniperpaw by Stemflower, and Sorrelpaw by Beechdusk. Starlingpelt gives birth to Wolfhowl’s sons, Toadkit and Runningkit. Silentstrike moves into the nursery expecting Leopardear’s kits.

Rushheart is found slaughtered, his body dragged to the RiverClan border. Perchfreeze is appointed as the new deputy. When RiverClan confronts WindClan, the resulting squirmish blinds Rapidshine in one eye and kills Beetlefleck, who dies from infected wounds she tried to hide. Stronglight kills a RiverClan queen, not realizing she was a queen, in front of her kits and the medicine cat apprentice, Heartpaw, who fails to save Dayshine. As RiverClan and WindClan meet for a grand battle to end it all, Fishwish, a former SkyClan warrior and current loner, reveals to the clans that BoneClan, under Sweetlight and Mossyflight’s rule, had been manipulating the clans, and that Blackpaw had been behind most of the strange RiverClan and WindClan killings. From RiverClan, it’s revealed Stronglight, Juniperpaw, and Sorrelpaw were spies. Secretly, Wolfhowl had been one too, but he never admits to it. Stronglight admits that he just enjoyed the thrill of the fight, but after killing Dayshine of RiverClan, he regrets ever having done it. Stronglight willingly leaves the clan to join BoneClan under Puppystar’s rule. Juniperpaw and Sorrelpaw are given second chances, but Sorrelpaw follows Stronglight at first. She ends up returning to the clan. By then, her denmates have become warriors named Nightpath and Juniperfall. She eventually earns the name Sorrelflash. Starlingpelt returns to her warrior duties as her sons become apprentices, Toadpaw mentored by Wolfhowl and Runningpaw by Romeofeather. Silentstrike gives birth to Leopardear’s kits, Ploverkit, Gillkit and Hazekit. Patchcloud gives birth to Stronglight’s kits who he never gets to see, Conekit and Lionkit. Stemflower and Minnowrose move into the nursery expecting Kinkflower and Plumshiver of ThunderClan’s kits respectfully.

Spotcry falls into the river while fishing, hitting his head on a rock and drowning. Tensions are still high between RiverClan and WindClan, despite the reveal, and two patrols get into an fight over prey, the RiverClan patrol consisting of Nightpath, Sorrelflash, Juniperfall, Toadpaw, Wolfhowl and Pinknose. Nightpath runs to get help after Toadpaw refuses to, but Pinknose has been killed by then, while Reedshade of WindClan has been killed too by Juniperfall without remorse. Silentstrike and Patchcloud return to their warrior duties as their kits become apprentices, Ploverpaw mentored by Perchfreeze, Gillpaw by Dewtail, Hazepaw by Nightpath, Conepaw by Twigstorm, and Lionpaw by Shrewheart. Specklepaw gets his full name, Specklespark. Runningpaw becomes a warrior before his brother, named Runningriver, while Toadpaw eventually earns the name Toadleg. Stemflower gives birth to Kinkflower’s kits, Kestrelkit, Grubkit and Plumpkit. Minnowrose gives birth to Plumshiver’s kits, Songkit, Rookkit, and Gladekit. Thornsong moves into the nursery expecting an unknown rogue tom’s kits.

Gladekit goes out of camp to explore and is eaten by a fox, only bits of him are found. Starlingpelt dies protecting Juniperfall from the fox, and Juniperfall kills the fox in revenge. Patchcloud passes away from an unknown panful illness. The apprentices become warriors named Ploverjaw, Gillsplash, Hazebird, Conesnout, and Lionfang. Stemflower and Minnowrose return to their warrior duties as their kits become apprentices, Kestrelpaw trained by Gingerleaf, Grubpaw by Juniperfall, Plumppaw by Runningriver, Songpaw by Nightpath, and Rookpaw by Leafwish. Thornsong gives birth to Dewykit and Rootkit. Sorrelflash moves into the nursery expecting Nightpath’s kits.

The current apprentices will eventually earn the names Kestrelfrost, Grubnose, Plumpflower, Songwish and Rookclaw. The current kits will eventually earn the names Dewysnow and Rootsleet, who will be a medicine cat. Rapidshine, Twigstorm and Ivyfall will all eventually retire to the elders’ den once Shadesun and Mistyleap have passed. Runningriver will also retire to the elders’ den after his legs are crushed in a rockslide, taking on the name Slowriver as a joke. In the distant future, Tinyfeather will become Tinystar, with Lionfang as her deputy.
