listen, the first thing you need to know about defne is that she knows stuff. okay? she knows dumb stuff that has no real world applications, stuff that could help you break into an ex’s apartment or steal a car, and stuff that’ll come in handy in the most unlikely situations.

the reason for this colorful collection of knowledge stems from her parents often times leaving defne to her own devices as a kid. so the young girl found her entertainment in her peers and books. which is how she met michael, the neighbor boy who she befriended in middle school when she fell off the bus and he gave her a hand (but not without laughing first).

los angeles was the perfect city to meet all manner of people and boy did defne ever, especially thanks to the bodega her uncle ran that she spent her after school hours at. it was how she first learned to lock pick, and was given her first agatha christie mystery.

it was also the reason she was sent to the hospital one night, but that only managed to light an interest in medicine for the teenager at the time.

so when she managed to get into golden state, her parents were thrilled. it was a great launching pad for her future, and she fully intends on going after a medical graduate degree after graduation.

okay but why and how did she get into selling fake ids? listen, babe, when one sees a market for something . . . one tends to jump at the chance to make money. a friend of defne had wanted to get into a club, so defne had tried her hand at whipping up a fake id. it was convincing enough to pass that she started raking in the money and building up a client base. under wraps, of course, strictly hush hush. everyone so far seems to understand that if she gets found out, their ticket to the clubs and bars gets pulled.

defne hadn’t thought too much about making michael a fake id, he was a friend since forever. why wouldn’t she, right? so when he started hanging that information over her head like a sword on a string, she started to feel anxious. would he actually tell someone if she didn’t tow the line he’d drawn for her? but before she could question it for too long, he was gone.

she doesn’t miss the manipulation, or the stress he’d managed to induce due to his tactics. but defne does miss the way michael was before he started acting like that. at the core of it all, she does miss her friend.

defne is a sweetheart to a fold. she probably has coffee flowing in her veins at this point due to how much she consumes. she loves murder mystery novels (ironic i know), and can and will rewatch 00’s flicks like her life depends on it (because her sanity lowkey does). she will willingly leap without looking, and stick her neck out for those she cares about. catch her knee deep in a video game when she absolutely should be studying cause procrastination? we absolutely know her.

declan was born to a single mother who had moved to los angeles from australia in pursuit of stardom. he knew little about his biological father, as his mother always refused to discuss him, dismissing him as a nobody who didn't deserve them.

upon declan's birth, his mother realized she had to put her dreams on hold and grow up faster than she had imagined. despite the challenges, she never complained about the cards she’d been dealt. life in los angeles was expensive, and even with two jobs, she couldn't afford the rent. so, she decided to return to her hometown in australia.

eventually, his mom got a better job as a secretary, and when he was eleven years old, she married a dentist. his little sister arrived when he was twelve, and life improved significantly—though he had never really complained about his previous life.

declan did well academically and excelled in sports, particularly swimming and volleyball. he also starred in most of the school plays and was considered quite popular among his peers. after all, artistic talent ran in the family.

at fifteen, his life took a drastic turn when his biological father appeared one day after school. when the man intercepted him and bluntly declared he was his father, declan didn't believe him. later that day, his mother called him to the living room, and there he was again.

the story was a familiar one: a young, naive girl with dreams of becoming an actress meets a man who promises to make her a star. she falls in love, but he's only looking for an affair. she gets pregnant, and he's suddenly out of the picture because he's married. so, why was he here now?

the answer was simple and archaic: he wanted a son. he had been married and had two daughters, which apparently wasn't good enough for him because he wouldn't "leave the family's company in the hands of women."

declan disliked the man at first sight, and listening to him speak made him even more unlikable. he refused to acknowledge him as his father, thinking that would be the end of it.

he was wrong. his father was quite wealthy, coming from a family of politicians who had invested in the film industry, creating one of the biggest film studios in the world. the harcourt family was filthy rich.

it was no surprise when his father fought for custody. with the help of a lot of money, he won. declan was forced to leave australia and move back to los angeles, where his father believed he "belonged."

declan grew up resenting his father, longing for summers when he could visit his real family. under his father's guardianship, he was groomed to become the son his father desired. his last name was changed from hayes to harcourt, and he was transformed into someone who fit high society.

despite his resistance, declan found it hard not to be captivated by the lifestyle of the rich, especially when parts of it infuriated his father. by eighteen, he was well-known in the los angeles party scene, much to his father's dismay. the next year and a half was a blur of excesses he couldn't even begin to describe.

it all came to an end when he turned twenty and got into serious trouble. his father managed to get him out of it, but only with the promise that declan would behave. he enrolled him in university, chose a major for him, and since then, declan has been reluctantly following his father's orders.

biography

raised in nevada near the las vegas strip! by his mama. she moved there in her 20s in search of fame n' fortune but she eventually just got stuck at the stripping job she initially took to help jumpstart her career. when she had max, she had to take other measures so she had the $$$ to raise him. even if it meant pulling him into scams she'd pull on tourists and forcing him to tag along on her rounds as an avon rep because 'it sells better when you flash 'em your big puppy dog eyes, maxie'. things like that stick with max as he grows older, starts perusing the strip with his friends for victims of his own. all to make a quick buck.

one day, she just so happened to pick the wrong tourist to try n' scam and nearly ended up in something resembling a fistfight (resembling because the guy was a head taller than her and she wouldn't have lasted a second) when a good samaritan butts in and defends her!!! scares the big lug away. the moment his mama learns that said good samaritan was a politician from los angeles (ie. $$$$$$$), she's laying the charm on thick. he's older (ie. balding), mild-mannered, in need of a good ego stroke so it's not long before they're getting hitched and max is on a one-way flight to los angeles! he's just 14 then.

max doesn't like it at first. doesn't like how stuffy and snobby everyone seems. hates his moms weird new husband too. but he wins max over in time, and they grow to have a genuinely wholesome relationship! so much so that max decides he'd like to be a politician, just like him. he's surely got the charisma for it, says his now father. but he never did grow out of his knack for causing trouble and pullin' a fast one on just about anybody, courtesy of his mom, so there's a real moral struggle there. but all politicians are a little slimy, right? what does it matter if he cut corners if it meant the greater good coming to fruition? ends justify the means, always always always.

golden state is a no brainer. his father went there and his father before him. and now max was one of them! so he'd go too. he didn't even think he'd go to college, so it's all a little foreign to him and he does just about anything to pass. and i do mean anything. he evens joins a few clubs! look at him go!

of course, it's not without a few problems. a couple months after his 21st, him n' his buddies went to a casino just to say they have. max ended up pocketing 8k and has been chasing that high ever since. it's escalated in the past couple of months, what with law school coming up for him shortly. he's started stealing his parent's valuables to have money to gamble with. turns out he's still just that kid on the strip lookin' to make a quick buck.

personality

very theatrical! the son of a politician and a retired scammer, so he is ever the showman and the smooth talker. he knows it too, so he can be up his own ass but his devil-may-care attitude and general amiableness means he is a guaranteed good time.

if chaotic neutral was a person. strikingly dishonest and flaky. but again!!! the ends justify the means for max. and the ends is always the best outcome for his loved ones.

Biography: (Content Warning for Transphobia, Bullying, Depression) Leo was born in Bilbao, Spain and was given a name he tries very hard to no longer hear. His mother and father both being politicians, it was a well to do household with a seemingly perfect family. From Leo's earliest days expectations of him were high. All of the Zuria children were polite, brilliant, and proper and had no option to be anything else. Leo was always a well behaved kid, but he never really seemed to fit in. He was brilliant, but hyperactive. Passionate, but a little overzealous about all his interests. The only person Leo ever felt truly understood him was his older sister; Bibine. Bibine was his best friend in the world, his partner in crime, the person who truly got him out of his shell. When Leo was ten his family moved from Spain to Washington DC, and his entire world suddenly became entirely different. Where he was a bit of an outsider before, he now was a complete pariah. He was nearly entirely unable to make friends or connect with others. At best he was alone, but at worst other kids tormented him relentlessly. As he grew more and more uncomfortable in his body, every attempt he ever made to think about transitioning was shut down by his conservative family. It was made clear to him that if he was any amount of openly queer, he would be disowned. Leo's acceptance to GSU was the best thing to happen to him. Being thousands of miles from his family gave Leo the courage it took to come out and begin his transition. Since attending GSU he has lived almost entirely as his authentic self, though his home situation is much different. He has been unable to go home, or truly see his family for quite some time, he always makes whatever excuse he can to stay at the school. With his parents both in important political positions, this is a scandal that would effect far more than just him, and he's still unsure how to go about it. He'd be lying if he said Michael's death hadn't come to him as somewhat of a relief. The two of them never got along, and he knew the kind of person Michael was. He feared that one phone call home to the Zuria family would ruin his life.

Connections: -Familial: Leo is not out to his family, and does not have a great relationship with his parents. He has not spoken to his two siblings in years but, he really wishes he could. I'd really be open to any familial connection.

Casimir's parents were never in the picture. From the moment he was born he was placed in the foster care system. He often wished of being adopted like many other kids around him were, but as time kept going and he moved from home to home around LA the yearning to find his forever home evaporated.

There wasn't a home that he enjoyed, but he found and cared for a lot of the foster siblings that he did come to know. He found joy in caring for the kids and the older he got the more he wanted to do for them. Cas took it upon himself to protect them from harm at all cost, whether it came from outside the home or within.

School had been something of a fascination for him seeing as it was the only other place aside from the homes where he ever went. Cas was smart, and he enjoyed learning all sorts of new things. High school also came with opportunities for someone like him.

Around sophomore year of high school he was allowed to apply to student jobs at his local high school. He would stay after school and clean classrooms and bathrooms for a monthly wage that helped him save enough money for college.

He didn't have to use the money saved though, because upon graduating high school he was offered a full scholarship to Golden State University where he got his bachelor's degree. After graduating Cas took a couple of years off college to find a job and a place to live as he had aged out of the system by this point in his life.

After a three year break, Casimir decided to come back to school to extend his education and resume for the work force. Even though his first degree had been enough for him to enter the work force, he quickly learned that for the career he wanted he needed more accomplishments and that he had yet so much to learn.

They enrolled once more, but this time he needed to find a way to pay for his education himself. There was obvious financial support from the government, but he still needed a way to pay for room and board.

Cas has taken a few odd jobs around the school that he shuffles through his studies. These side hustles leave him with enough money to live somewhat comfortably within the university.

[ Personality ]

Casimir is a very sarcastic and loyal person. They are very protective and passionate with their friends, often going out of his way to help with anything that's needed of him. Studying is his life for sure, but when he's not studying he's being a menace around. Cas likes to pass his free time pranking people around the college for a quick laugh. Small elaborate pranks that take time and a bit of effort on his part. He is not malicious in any way, but can have a sharp tongue when approached with attitude or 'superiority'.

Percy hadn’t always been a good kid, but he was surely one of the better ones. Pushed away with a scowl and enough lectures to curve his interest in the usual rebellion most of his peers had, he found other ways to explore the world and its limits. He was born and raised in Seattle and crossed the threshold of a white picket fence the day he left the hospital. For a long time, he thought of that fence as the gates to his kingdom but little did he know that it was his father’s way of keeping the struggles that plagued their family far away. The Dawson’s weren’t a picture perfect family, but they had some shine to their grime. Percy and his sister, Andromeda, were inseparable and he was always the one pulling her away from the things their father advised them against. The two were different, but they had a loyalty like no other and so when Andy passed away their junior year of college, everything he ever knew seemed to have finally spoiled. He believed every chance he saved up, every karma point reserved for him to share with his sister, had not just rotted but never existed at all. More importantly, his father had never prepared them for the world he had belonged to. He hadn’t protected them. After his sister’s death, his family seemed to shrivel up under their grief and his parents divorced. His father relocated to his sister’s happy place in their family vacation home by the beach, and PJ stayed far away from it. He couldn’t understand trying to chase a memory in those places forgotten from their youth and more importantly, ruined by the person his sister had eventually become after she began taking drugs. He had done his best to be a bridge between her and their parents, but it wasn’t enough. That guilt ate away at him and one night he gave in to the poison that took his sister’s life, and he’s yet to stop. This started three years ago.

PRESENT DAY

He lived with his mother after the divorce but after his use became too heavy, and sleeping on porches in the middle of winter after she refused to let him come in high, he decided maybe he needed some change but not without raising a little hell first. He finally let himself get taken under his father's wing, enough for the man to pay for his college housing. Still Percy doesn't plan to turn a new leaf, but find another reason of spite to carry on. He hopes that he can use whatever sympathy his father has left until it’s run dry, at least until graduation.

Sure moving was an important core memory to anyone who'd never seen beyond their hometown, but with PJ it was different. He adapted well to social situations, using his bold personality to create friendships from random theme park rides to the barista that memorized that his order required extra whip cream. Skyler was born and raised in the Upper East Side of New York with both her parents and sister. Her Mom, a well known face around the world for retiring from the modeling world to style them, met a man traveling the globe as a musician. Liam was nowhere near as successful as his wife, but somehow two opposites managed to maintain a marriage and start a very creative family. The Cameron girls grew up surrounded by music and lavish parties, it wasn’t long until Skyler realized how much she loved to sing. She fell in love with being in the spotlight, though she quickly stuck to only singing in the shower once she saw how talented her sister was with music as a way to give each of them something to allow them to shine differently but together. As a young girl Skyler would sneak into her mother’s closet when they had a gala or late night function the girl’s weren’t old enough to attend and spend hours staring at the shoes, perfecting the art of walking in heels by the age of 5. The sneaking continued as she’d venture into her mom’s workshop and “borrow” designs off her rack for parties, being sure to put the items back before morning. Skyler was always drawn to fashion, wearing it, creating it…you name it. She was happy to pick up another passion that’d look good on her college applications alongside acting, getting the chance to design costumes for her onstage performances didn’t hurt either. When she was finally able to go to all the events she’d study what everyone was wearing, learning what was popular and using it to start designing her own clothes in secret, not wanting her mother’s influence to smother her. She never thought she was any good, so for a while she stuck to drawing anything she could: fruit, people, nature. anything that didn’t involve clothes, but she always found herself coming back. It wasn’t until she met (wanted muse connection) that he truly got her to start honing her craft and focusing on what mattered to her most. As Skyler entered university, she saw herself debating between her desires, seeing as fashion would lead her directly under her mother’s shadow and that’s something she’s still striving to steer far away from. She’s always loved her mother’s designs but knew a developed career would involve Skyler working under her and not getting to experience the real world on her own. The spark for acting came back bigger and stronger than ever, resulting in the blonde signing up for every production Golden State had to offer. Skyler never got the chance to focus on her own feelings while tip-toeing around her mother’s, now as she stepped into university life she was left without Diana's constant stare. Michael Michael Michael...where to begin. It wasn't some love story where he swooped her off of her feet. It started with harmless glances, to Skyler turning him down every time he'd attempt to treat her to a night out. She thought her disinterest would cause him to feel the same way, but she'd always give him credit for being consistent. The blonde gave in eventually, slowly learning there was more beneath the surface of what he allowed the general public to see. Things were good for a while, until his extracurriculars started to take up more of his time than usual, come to find out it wasn't just that getting his attention. "she's just shy" her mother says ➟ at six she's top of her first-grade class, always getting the highest scores on their english exams. she's still not making many friends, but that's okay because she'll be more outgoing with time. ➟ a few months later her father passes away in his sleep. it's shocking and unexpected. her mother has a rough time grieving the loss of her first love and having to take over family finances. she joins a dating website where she meets an older man and the two quickly get hitched after nine months of dating. ➟ right before her 10th birthday nesrin meets her mother's new boyfriend. a man she met on a catholic dating site who has a daughter two years younger than her. the two get hitched not long after and now she's learning how to have a family again. ➟ nesrin starts attending church with the family at her mother's request, whose husband is very uptight and religious. she has a new set of rules to follow with her little sister. ➟ once high school starts nesrin does her best to break out of her shell and make new friends. hard to do when you're fifteen with an 8 pm curfew. ➟ at fifteen she sneaks out & goes to a high school party with the neighbor to meet new people. nesrin has her first kiss and loses her virginity in the same night to an older boy she has a crush on. not necessarily because she wants to but rather because it's what all the teens are doing. isn't it? nesrin soon learns that she likes the little bit of attention she can get from boys, and slowly begins to pursue them just to 'finally feel something'. ➟ i'm getting tired of typing so real quick she does her best to get good grades but she has mediocre grades at best. her best subject is english. she applies to all sorts of colleges across the country & obtains a spot as GSU with a swimming scholarship.

mooney was born crystal moon song to her mama, esther song. the way she came wasn't very conventional. esther & michael kepler's father were friends from college, still so close decades later that esther asked him to be the sperm donor for the child she was hellbent on having after coming out of a loveless marriage and a career she hated. he agreed! it went well, and esther moved to cottonwood, arizona as soon as she knew she was pregnant. while mr. kepler wasn't involved in her life all that much, mooney and her mom would often make the drive to california to pay the keplers a visit during school breaks, and even christmas/thanksgiving a couple years.

if mooney's full name didn't gave it away, just know that esther is like the final boss of all hippies. she moved to cottonwood to start a psychic business in downtown sedona, which was only a short drive away. she's big on spirituality, connecting with nature, mediation, and whatnot.

esther always said that mooney was the universe's ultimate test of patience for her, with her sarcasm, dry humor, and iron will-- all decidedly the very opposite of esther. but mooney would argue that she needed traits like that, to keep her mother's feet planted firmly on the ground and reel her back in through every disastrous fling.

mooney always had a bit of a temper too, and she started playing soccer to have some kind of outlet for it. she's good too! really good. esther's got the money to really pimp her out, with her own soccer coach, soccer camps during the summer, etc. she plays all the way through high school, team captain and the whole nine yards.

it ends badly. mooney was only 15 when she gravely injures a pedestrian during a hit-and-run. she had taken her mom's car to go to a party. it was dark. she was still a little drunk. it's bad. it's worse because she ran away. three weeks later, and she finds out that the person suffered a head injury that landed them in a coma.

much to her luck, esther used to be a judge. she talked and talked and pulled strings she hadn't pulled in years to get mooney out of the situation scot-free, all on the condition that esther pays for the family's medical bills. that meant no more investing in mooney's sport. it also meant dipping into her college fund. it was tragic, but it was also esther's version of a 'lesson' for mooney.

slowly, she fell out of love with the sport. all of her club friends drifted away from her and she quickly found out that the only reason she really liked playing it was because she liked the people she was playing with. that, and the guilt just weighed on her. she looked elsewhere for her passions, for her comforts.

she just so happened to find them in the sciences, specifically biology. it turns out she got more out of the hikes and the camping trips her mother forced her on as a kid than just realigned chakras, or whatever her mom said. she loved nature above all else! wanted to understand the why behind everything she saw and so she saw to it, devoting a huge chunk of her time to academics through the rest of high school.

mooney is aggressive. in everything she does. she's abrasive, irritable, rough around the edges, and highly! judgemental! can come across as a know-it-all, and a snob, but it's just because she knows better than you do and she can prove it. her words. has made her fair share of people cry because of her need to punish idiocy.

but she's also incredibly loyal to the few people she's got in her corner. while she will go to extreme lengths to get revenge, she won't shy away from helping her loved ones with the same ferocity. she is equal parts brave and hard-working. an academic, even now. definite gym bro too, with the highlights of her workout pics and everything.

Money wasn’t everything, they say. But it sure was helpful, right? Her family’s wealth was beneficial in Rezan’s academic path. The youngest of three children (oldest brother and middle sister), she had always been intelligent - maybe the most intelligent of the siblings - and had aced her courses, but her family’s status naturally did help too. In another life, things may not have quite been the same. Rezan wasn’t really vain, not really spoiled in that stereotypical manner of selfishness and insincerity, but would she give up her life if given the choice? No. At least she was honest in that, right?

It was the started from nothing type of narrative with her family. Well, a handful of generations ago, at least. Of course, yes, the humble simplicity of it all. Except it wasn’t always that simple, as humbling of a climb as one may think. Being honest with one thing didn’t mean there was honesty in everything else.

The effort to claim respect, affluence, and power didn’t come without the exploit of others. The same with the Karacan family, who fell into a cycle of black, bribery, cheating, and the like. And the cycle continued even as Rezan’s father rose in ranks in an engineering and consultant company. Her father had been on the board for nearly a decade now, after having moved the family from Istanbul to LA. The various misdemeanors by him and other members of the company spanned from the clients to even competitor enterprises.

Rezan had always known her father was shady. He was charming, knew how to work a crowd. But he was also discreet, reserved, his smile not quite reaching his eyes even around his children. When she was younger, she’d overhear him on the phone, talking about business things that she didn’t understand. Sometimes he’d be calm, other times frustrated.

Sometimes, Rezan’s mother would argue with him. Fights that Rezan would put earphones in for and try to ignore it. What were they really arguing about? Rezan used to turn a blind eye. But the older she got, the smarter she got. She actually starting paying attention more, grasping a few things off those phone calls that she hadn’t clocked before.

Though time would pass and things would come to light, even if it was just to one daughter who let her curiosity get the better of her. It was years ago. Her father had carelessly left his laptop open with various files spread out on the desk in his home office. Rezan had been looking for him, and found evidence of corporate wrong-doings instead. She was caught, of course, which led to a lengthy conversation that didn’t exactly include an apology.

It was the redundancy of it’s not what it looks like and do not worry about what you’ve seen and this life we have, do you want to lose it? Perhaps the man used his daughter’s ambitions against her, the way she wanted her current lifestyle for various reasons but mostly because it allowed her to be getting her current education.

So, Rezan bit her tongue. Did that make her complicit? Well, if she had to ask, then maybe the answer was obvious. It was a secret that could damage so many reputations, be hurtful to so many people. Herself included. So, maybe previous observations were a lie: maybe Rezan was selfish.

Nonetheless, her academic career at Golden State University had gone off without a hitch. As an anthropology major with a minor in sociology, she’s also in various clubs as well as a TA for some courses too. She even fell into the – at first, clichély annoying – trope of academic rivals with a student named Michael Kepler.

He was a psychology major, so already the contrast of studies brought an interesting dynamic. They even had to do a project together at one point in which he spent time at her house. And despite the arguments and headaches, they received excellent marks. There was some competitiveness in their relationship, some snark, but nothing that was ever really antagonistic. Nothing that Rezan would actually want him dead over despite him being an asshole.

The campus party a year ago had been an eventful one. It was the kind of fun night that felt like it lasted for years. But it was also the kind of fun night that could change so much, so unexpectedly. Michael met his demise and it shook the university and its attendees. Now he was left to just charm a grave.

Now a year has gone by and some blog user called Phantom has popped up, declaring they knew secrets. Who the hell is this person? Rezan thinks it’s a bluff, or theorizes that it’s a prank out of boredom. Like, please. It was ridiculous to think that this person happened to have dirt on all of them, right? Right. Yeah.
