Today's (2/17/2025) Episode: Compassionate Compromises

A furious Skye stomped into the large catering kitchen, Elyse trailing behind xem. Xe stopped for a moment just inside the doorway, relaxing a bit as xe breathed in the familiar, comforting scent of food preparation - that lingering essence of meals being made here year after year.

“Skye, I don’t know that aging up right now is a good idea…” Elyse said as xe angrily grabbed the ingredients out of the fridge, xir tears mixing with the batter as xe dumped everything into a large bowl and began stirring vigorously “If you skip the end of high school and that internship…”

“I agree with your girl.” Luigi added as he and Rhys entered “I promise I’m on your side, but please put down the spoon and let’s talk, OK?”

Skye deflated, stepping back from the bowl “Fine, but don’t try to change my mind - you don’t get to decide MY life!”

Luigi nodded. “I promise. Oh, please, stay” he said to Rhys, who had put his arm around Elyse to lead her out of the room. “I have some ideas, and I’d like everyone here to hear them.” Rhys nodded, guiding Elyse instead to a small ottoman by the window.

“So…” Luigi began “Let me start by saying that I respect your right to make this decision Skye. I was hoping you’d go to university, but that’s not the only way to be successful. After I let my ambition endanger my health and ended up in the hospital with critically low iron your Grandpa Peachy reminded me that many of the sims in our family reached the top of their careers without a college degree. That night he told me the same thing I’m going to tell you.”

He smiled warmly at his only child. “You’ll do great things, with or without a diploma, but the really important thing is that you’re happy and healthy.”

“But Mom said…” Skye began “Your mom” Luigi interrupted “has been through a lot. Your grandparents had her very young then got divorced. For a long time they didn’t have many simoleons to spare; and that was hard on their whole family. Then she went away to school and got swept up in a whirlwind romance that ultimately didn’t work out. She just doesn’t want to see you go through those things that were so painful for her.”

“Elyse and I are nothing like that!” Skye protested “We’ve known each other forever. This isn’t a mistake.”

“I know you feel that way” Luigi nodded “and I agree that this is your decision to make. I just want you to understand your mother isn’t trying to hurt you, or Elyse, she’s just worried.” Skye didn’t look convinced, but Luigi soldiered on “Anyway, let’s set that aside for now and focus on the practical matters at hand, OK?” Skye nodded reluctantly, waiting to hear what xir father had to say.

“So, first thing, this internship” he began “Will you still be eligible for it as a young adult?” Skye shook xir head no, and he nodded gravely. “I was worried about that. I think you’re right that it’s a great opportunity, and I’d hate to see you lose out on it.”

“I guess” Skye mumbled, reluctant to give up on the appealing idea of moving in with Elyse immediately.

 “Next, there’s the matter of Elyse’s job” Luigi turned to face her “You’ve been painting for awhile… you’re at least level 5, right?... level six!? That’s fantastic!” he smiled at her admission “At that level you shouldn’t be cleaning palettes. My step-brother Scott has worked at 1000 Words forever. I’ll introduce you this evening. I have a feeling he can help get you a job at his art studio that’s a much better fit.”

“You really think so?” Elyse grinned from ear to ear “Thank you!!”

“Now finally” he continued “as for where you two can live in safety and comfort. Skye, you remember the house in Brindleton Bay? It's belonged to me since your Grandpa Peachy passed. Instead of renting some little apartment in the city you guys could move in there.”

“Well… I was going to live downtown in the Arts District” Elyse said reluctantly, “but I guess if I already have a good job at the gallery…”

“If it’s the company of other artists you crave, Great Grandfather Candor has been taking care of the place for me for quite awhile. I’m sure he’d be happy to help you both get settled in and excited to mold another aspiring artist joining the extended family.”

Elyse immediately perked up. “I’d be crazy to pass up the opportunity to work side by side with Candor Miller. He’s a Master of the Real!”

“Great! We’ll talk to him tonight too” Luigi promised her “So, Skye, does that plan make the prospect of finishing high school seem brighter?”

In the face of Elyse’s enthusiasm, xe readily agreed. “Yes; that sounds great dad. Thanks for helping us get started in style!”
