Playing Core War - The Programming Game
So I'm trying to start playing Core War, which is a programming game where two or more programs written in a special assembly language battle against each other to kill the other program in the memory of a virtual computer. I decided to document how to start playing, after I had trouble just installing the simulator.
I found this website, where I downloaded the source code for the simulator, a.k.a MARS (Memory Array Redcode Simulator). The one that I used in this tutorial is called pmars (portable MARS).
It seems like there are download links for windows users, so that you don't have to compile anything like I did, but there also seems to be different simulators that have more features and are (maybe?) easier to use.
The following instructions worked on my mac, but I'm not so sure if they would work on Linux or Windows. If you manage to get it working on either of those, lmk and I'll try to add it.
Instructions for mac (& maybe? linux):
(BTW, whenever things are in quotes, please ignore them)
I downloaded pmars version 0.9.4 from here.
On macOS, I had to download XQuartz, for the UI of the simulator to start.
I used GCC to compile the program, so install homebrew, and run "brew install gcc make" inside your terminal to install both GCC & Make.
Once unzipped, I read the README file (might be helpful)
Open the file called Makefile within the src directory, and edit the line that starts with "CFLAGS" so that it becomes "CFLAGS = -O -DEXT94 -DXWINGRAPHX -DPERMUTATE -DRWLIMIT -I/usr/X11/include/"
Also change the line at the top from "CC = gcc" to "CC = gcc-12" only if on macOS
First try to compile by running "make" within the "src" directory. If it works, great! If not, try the following after running "make clean".
edit the file "sim.c" and find the line that contains "sighandler"
Change "sighandler(0);" to "sigaction(0);"
Try to run "make" again within the "src" directory
For me, that was how I compiled the program. This may or may not work on M1 and M2 macs, as I don't have access to one. Once compiled, you can move the file called pmars to an easily accesible directory (Ex. Create a directory called "bin" in your home folder and put it there). Make sure to put the "warriors" directory somewhere you could find it easily (such as your "Documents" folder)
To run a game (for mac), first open the XQuartz application.
Change directory to the folder where the program is stored and run:
"./pmars PATH_TO_FIRST_WARRIOR PATH_TO_SECOND_WARRIOR"
An example would be: "./pmars ~/Documents/warriors/aeka.red ~/Documents/warriors/rave.red"
A window should pop up containing the memory contents of the Virtual Machine!
Voila! Your very own MARS simulator!

The Nokia 770, N800 andN810are 'Internet Tablets'running Maemo: a handheld Linux distribution based on Debian.
Although there is acommand line flasher availablefor Mac OS X from Maemo, there's no officialGUI interface for it. This has been written usingPlatypus and CocoaDialog and is, of course,supplied with no warranty.

This is not affiliated with Nokia and so if your machine turns into amongoose and starts dancing ballet, don'tblame me. Or blame me, but don't complain - or, more importantly, sue.
Usage

Download the latestNokia image (large file ending in .bin, for exampleNokia_770_0.2005.45-8.bin) and either selectthis file when prompted by 770Flasher, or just drag the file on to the770Flasher icon.

Wikipedia is anexcellent online resource and tied with a network connection through aNokia 770 is almost equivalent to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.Although not yet available offline for Maemo, it is possible to enhanceWikipedia to make it look better on the 770's screen.
The default skin contains a long left-hand column, however by creatingan account with Wikipedia (which is free), you can change the 'skin'to one more suited to a device such as the 770.

Sylpheed
Sylpheed is a full-featured email client: supporting POP3,IMAP, SSL and everything else you'd expect. The full feature list can beseen at the Sylpheed homepage.
This is a port and Hildonisation of Sylpheed to integrate it as a properMaemo application. It's not finished, and so should be viewedas an alpha-release. You may be better off using Claws or (even better, hopefully)Modest.
Known bugs
Not all windows are Hildonised yet (that is, many have menubars ratherthan pop-up menus, and so on).
Fix dependencies on N800 to avoid start-up problem (see this solution in the mean time).
Full-screen button doesn't work.
Some windows appear too small, others too big.

Synchronisation and backup using rsync & make
Please note this has not been updated for 2006 OS,instead I prefer bind-mounts, however it is easily customisable.
The built-in backup/restore tool doesn't backup all yourdevice's configuration or installed applications. This script (aMakefile)meets those requirements and allows for maintaining patched parts of the rootfilesystem across firmware upgrades.
Usage
Requires rsync and SSH (on both 770 & hostcomputer) and make on the host.
Memo For Management
To 'install' the script:
Create a new, empty directory, on a Unix-like box (e.g. Mac OS X,Linux, *BSD, Windows with cygwin) and ensure you have rsync, make and SSHinstalled.
Download Makefile.770sync and move it to thenew directory, named Makefile.
Modify the line beginning REMOTE_DEVICE topoint to your 770. For example, my 770 has a fixed IP, I have root accesson it (by enablingR&D mode) and Dropbear is running on port 22 (the default), thereforethe line in my local copy says:

Pull changes from the remote device to your local copy. Effectivelyperforming a backup.
bootstrap
Similar to push but doesn't use rsync. This is useful when yourdevice has just been reflashed and is missing any software. By just installingand starting SSH, thistarget can be used to restore your documents, changes and applications (suchas rsync). An article on dillernet.com,Recovering From A Firmware Flash, has some techniqueswhich may also help in this regard (specifically scripts to install theneeded packages & SSH keys from the MMC card).
Since bootstrap will generally be required when reflashing andbefore SSH is running as root; SSH may well be listening on port 2222 (ifstarted by an unprivileged user), rather than port 22. Therefore, you canoverride the REMOTE_DEVICE variable:

Note: in this example, as the SSH server was started as anormal user, it would not be possible to restore symlinks in /etc.
Example
One common requirement when SSH is installed is startingit automatically when your device is turned on. This is easily done bycreating a symlink, as described in the InstallSsh document in the wiki.
Unfortunately, when you reflash your device, this symlink will be lost.However, by using the script you can ensure that this (and similar changes)are put back on the device when you restore:

As you can see, the local 770-sync directorycontains a copy of any changes you've made to the file system. In addition,the user's home directory, the configuration and the installed applications are pulled back on a pull operation.
Citrix ICA client
The below screenshots show that theCitrixARM Linux client can be got to run on a Nokia 770, although it iscurrently much use: the virtual keyboard is tied to onboard GTK+applications. A USB keyboard, or a Bluetooth keyboard using kbddshould work, however.
The Citrix install file won't work with busybox's 'expr' implementation andwithout 'cpio'. The application itself requires a few extra debs (whichfortunately Debian/ARM can provide):

Unfortunately, with the advent of 2006 OS and the use of EABI, older ARMLinux binaries will no longer work on the 770 without recompilation. Therefore,unless Citrix recompile and provide new binaries, or an open source clientis made available, Citrix is not easily possible on a modernMaemo device.

HISTORY OF LINUX: The Unix operating system was conceived and implemented in 1969, at AT&T's Bell Labs, in the United States by Ken Thompson, Dennis Ritchie, Douglas McIlroy, and Joe Ossanna. First released in 1971, Unix was written entirely in assembly language, as was common practice at the time. In 1973 in a key, pioneering approach, it was rewritten in the C programming language by Dennis Ritchie (with the exception of some hardware and I/O routines). The availability of a high-level language implementation of Unix made its porting to different computer platforms easier.
Due to an earlier antitrust case forbidding it from entering the computer business, AT&T was required to license the operating system's source code to anyone who asked. As a result, Unix grew quickly and became widely adopted by academic institutions and businesses. In 1984, AT&T divested itself of Bell Labs; freed of the legal obligation requiring free licensing, Bell Labs began selling Unix as a proprietary product, where users were not legally allowed to modify Unix. The GNU Project, started in 1983 by Richard Stallman, had the goal of creating a "complete Unix-compatible software system" composed entirely of free software. Work began in 1984. Later, in 1985, Stallman started the Free Software Foundation and wrote the GNU General Public License (GNU GPL) in 1989. By the early 1990s, many of the programs required in an operating system (such as libraries, compilers, text editors, a command-line shell, and a windowing system) were completed, although low-level elements such as device drivers, daemons, and the kernel, called GNU Hurd, were stalled and incomplete.
Linus Torvalds has stated that if the GNU kernel had been available at the time (1991), he would not have decided to write his own. Although not released until 1992, due to legal complications, development of 386BSD, from which NetBSD, OpenBSD and FreeBSD descended, predated that of Linux. Torvalds has also stated that if 386BSD had been available at the time, he probably would not have created Linux.
MINIX was created by Andrew S. Tanenbaum, a computer science professor, and released in 1987 as a minimal Unix-like operating system targeted at students and others who wanted to learn operating system principles. Although the complete source code of MINIX was freely available, the licensing terms prevented it from being free software until the licensing changed in April 2000.
In 1991, while attending the University of Helsinki, Torvalds became curious about operating systems. Frustrated by the licensing of MINIX, which at the time limited it to educational use only, he began to work on his own operating system kernel, which eventually became the Linux kernel.
Torvalds began the development of the Linux kernel on MINIX and applications written for MINIX were also used on Linux. Later, Linux matured and further Linux kernel development took place on Linux systems. GNU applications also replaced all MINIX components, because it was advantageous to use the freely available code from the GNU Project with the fledgling operating system; code licensed under the GNU GPL can be reused in other computer programs as long as they also are released under the same or a compatible license. Torvalds initiated a switch from his original license, which prohibited commercial redistribution, to the GNU GPL. Developers worked to integrate GNU components with the Linux kernel, making a fully functional and free operating system.
Linus Torvalds had wanted to call his invention "Freax", a portmanteau of "free", "freak", and "x" (as an allusion to Unix). During the start of his work on the system, some of the project's makefiles included the name "Freax" for about half a year. Torvalds had already considered the name "Linux", but initially dismissed it as too egotistical.
In order to facilitate development, the files were uploaded to the FTP server (ftp.funet.fi) of FUNET in September 1991. Ari Lemmke, Torvalds' coworker at the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT), who was one of the volunteer administrators for the FTP server at the time, did not think that "Freax" was a good name, so he named the project "Linux" on the server without consulting Torvalds. Later, however, Torvalds consented to "Linux".
According to a newsgroup post by Torvalds, the word "Linux" should be pronounced (/ˈlɪnʊks/ (📷listen) LIN-uuks) with a short ‘i’ as in ‘print’ and ‘u’ as in ‘put’. To further demonstrate how the word "Linux" should be pronounced, he included an audio guide (📷listen (help·info)) with the kernel source code. Contradictory, in this recording, he pronounces ‘Linux’ (/ˈlinʊks/ (📷listen) LEEN-uuks with a short but close unrounded front vowel.

We all are familiar with the word, BIOS. We see this everyday when we switch on PC/laptop, it will say, press F2 for BIOS settings. We skip that information and the computer boots successfully. BIOS is a technical term and known as Basic Input/Output System (BIOS).
Let us understand this term and its importance in a very simple language. A computer is fully operational with all its hardware assembled properly and software is installed.
What is it that connects the hardware components and the software that are being installed in computers? Motherboard, one of the hardware components or you can call it the computer’s core part. Motherboard has a program written that connects all the ports of keyboard, mouse, monitor display, other USB ports, hard disk drive, Read Access Memory (RAM), CD drive and so on. This program is written in Read-Only (ROM) memory of the central processing unit (CPU). The program is called firmware or BIOS. The program is made up of code, memory and data. The program is initiated while booting or starting/switching on the computer/laptop. When the computer starts, your operating system (OS) needs to get a signal for it to function. BIOS gives this signal to the operating system and the operating system starts with all the software components installed including hardware drivers of keyboard, mouse, monitor, CD Player, hard disk and so on.
Need to update BIOS
In general, you do not need to see your BIOS setup when your computer is working smoothly. Whenever there is a change in hardware component or any malfunctioning of hardware is detected or your computer’s RAM has stopped working, you may want to check the version of your BIOS and see if any update is required for firmware upgrade.
It is recommended to untouch your BIOS setting if your computer operations are smooth without any issues. Sometimes, it creates an issue if you upgrade your BIOS software. Working system may stop functioning due to incompatible version of BIOS with hardware installed in the system.
BIOS for Windows
Before getting into your PC/Laptop’s BIOS settings, you need to check the BIOS version in your system.
If your system is booting as expected and the operating system loads properly, you can check the BIOS version from the Control Panel of the system.

To open BIOS:
Switch on your desktop/laptop.
Press F2 to access the BIOS setup. (This step needs to be performed before operating system is loaded.)
Use keyboard / keypad’s UP and DOWN arrow keys to enter BIOS setup.
Use the DOWN arrow key to go to the BIOS Flash Update option. The update information screen appears.
Type y to continue BIOS Update.
Once updated, the computer restarts.
Please check the updated version from the System Information window of the Control Panel.
BIOS for Linux
If your desktop/laptop has Linux operating system installed, you need to know commands to enter BIOS setup.
dmidecode is the command to enter and view BIOS related information such as serial number and version.
Follow the steps below to enter BIOS in Linux.
Open the terminal. To open it, press CTRL + ALT + T keys.

Update BIOS Software – Linux
Use the below command line from your Linux system. This will install the ISO file.

Next, you will need to extract this ISO file and copy it into USB/Flash drive. After entering the command below, press ENTER.

Write the extracted file to USB/Flash drive.

Enter the following command to mount the flashdrive.
ridz@hostname:tmp$ sudo mount/dev/flashdrivename1 /media/ridz/ ridz@hostname: cs /media/ridz $
Nex, unmount the flashdrive.
ridz@hostname:tmp$ sudo mount/dev/flashdrivename1 /media/ridz/ ridz@hostname:~$ sudo unmount/media/ridz
Reboot the system.
ridz@hostname:~$ sudo reboot
Update the BIOS.
Press F12 to select your flash drive.
Select the flash drive and press ENTER. The menu appears.
Select the Update system program option from the menu. Press ENTER.
Press y to continue BIOS update.
It will take about 10 minutes to update BIOS. Please do not turn off the computer.
You will get the message BIOS Updated successfully on the command line window.
The system will reboot. Once rebooted, please check the computer is functioning as expected.
BIOS for MacOS
It is very easy to enter BIOS using your MacBook. When you start the MacBook, press the following keys simultaneously.
Command + option + 0 + F
Update BIOS Software – MacOS
You cannot manually update MacOS BIOS. MacOS updates are released periodically. Whenever there is a new update and the BIOS update is required for your MacBook, you go to the Apple menu → System Preferences → Software Update.
It is as simple as clicking one button and your BIOS is updated.
