I genuinely did not know what these three characters were going to look like until I started drawing them. The gunslinger in particular; she was originally a warrior with a greatsword in earlier drafts, then I decided that giving her a gun would be a way to show the ways new technology is spreading throughout Exandria, but I didn’t have a clear idea of what she’d look like. I wanted to steer away from the traditional Western movie gunslinger image and decided that an early adopter of the gun might be steampunk in aesthetic, and then went back a little further in era to this 1700s, early Industrial Age look. The cleric is a devotee of the Everlight so he’s in yellow robes and then I was really tired and somehow managed to mix up “rogue” with “ranger” on the third person haha. So it’s a rogue with a ranger aesthetic.

Interestingly, the early drafts of the script specified for them all to be in red cloaks because it was so long ago we hadn’t even heard of the Ruby Vanguard yet. I’d meant for them to be associated with the Stratos Throne, and, having noticed that Otohan Thull dresses in red despite being leader of the all-yellow Paragon’s Call gang, figured she must have had some other affiliation and thought it might be that. I was only partially correct -- she is wearing the color of another organization, but the Stratos Throne ended up being a lot less important to the plot than the early part of the campaign suggested.

So these three are no longer tied to any particular alliance, but we will be seeing them again.

I haven’t watched all of these anime myself, but for the ones that I do know, a good chunk of them tend to have some queer aspect about them. 

Steins;Gate: has Ruka/Luka, a character that is gender-conforming (I know that there tends to be heavy debate on whether or not Ruka is a trans character or an otokonoko character, which is a bit different and more like a Femboy identity). Regardless, Ruka is shown to struggle with gender identity and also has a canon crush on Okabe, the MC and a man.

I’m not super well versed in Steins;Gate though (I watched it when it aired, but never got super invested in the series, games, and etc), so if anyone has anymore info on this character and series (in regards to queer aspects), feel free to share.

Psycho-Pass: I have only seen Season 1 (the other seasons are on my “To-Watch” list), but there is a canon lesbian couple in the series: Shion and Yayoi.

They are shown post-coital and everything (like, in the bed, putting underwear back on, etc.). Shion, the one in the white lab coat in the image above is also stated as being bisexual over the LGBTQIA+ Wikia. They are more minor characters, but they aren’t just background characters either.

Madoka: I watched the show when it was airing back in the day. I haven’t seen any of the movies or spinoff stuff, but I do remember there being very heavy queer subtext (specifically yuri).

Madoka and Homura are a huge yuri pairing in the anime community for a reason, lol.

DRAMAtical Murder & Togainu no Chi: Both of these anime were adaptations of Nitro+ video games. Those games were very GAY  and very sexually graphic and kinky. It’s been a while since I watched either anime, but I do know that they had to tone down these series down a bit.

Interestingly, MAL has Togainu no Chi labeled as a BL, but not DRAMAtical Murder.

Anyway, both of those shows are very gay.

Finally, Revenger: this is a currently airing anime. I haven’t watched it myself (I got too caught up in Buddy Daddies, which also caused me to fall behind on watching The Fire Hunter too, my brain can only do one anime at a time, lol). But, I do check out the discussion posts on this series over on MAL and r/anime from time to time to get an idea of how they are handling characters and themes.

And apparently one episode contains a gay brothel. Okay. I was also aware of the character: Nio.

I checked out the official site before it aired, and I wanted to wait and see/hear how they handled Nio’s character. The official website describes Nio as 両性具, which is a word that is generally translated into English as hermaphrodite or androgenous, but not as intersex. Japanese also seems to deferentiate these words: 両性具有 vs. インターセックス (intaasekkusu). So, I’ve been a little uncertain of how this particular representation would play out, but regardless if it is well handled or not, the fact of the matter is that Nio’s character exists outside of the gender binary as well and is a queer character in this way.

Basically, what I’m getting at here, is that NitroPlus is an anime producer that has series which explore queer themes and has queer characters in them. Not everything they produce has queer elements to them. From what I remember of Suisei no Gargantia, for example, was pretty heternormative and straight, and one of the script writers for Buddy Daddies, Vio Shimokura, wrote for one other series: Tokyo 24-ku, which seems to lean more into “close childhood friends” category of writing with its male characters. But, I haven’t actually watched the show, so I can’t really say (this is just going off of the synopsis).

The other Buddy Daddies script writer, Yuuko Kakihara, has worked on a bunch of different series, but nothing that really stands out as being specifically queer in the sense of having same-sex relationships and whatnot. But, the company of NitroPlus itself hasn’t shied away from queer characters or themes before, either. 

NitroPlus is producing Buddy Daddies along with PA Works, so I think it is important to think about what other series and kinds of content the production companies have made before too. It can add better context and layers when figuring out how to read the themes being presented in a series.

Mmmm I'm bored and it's almost 6 am and I cannot sleep.

I'm gonna assign the Empires SMP s2 cast DnD classes for the fun of it.

Joel: He's a Sorcerer for sure, but idk if wild magic or blue draconic bloodline is more fitting. On one hand, he dipped into a magic fountain to become a God which is very wild magic leaning. On the other hand, blue dragon ancestry would give an obvious affinity to lightning, and an excuse for his obsession with gold and the common teal/blue themes of his Stratos builds. You also can get wings. Idk, I like both a lot here.

Fwhip: Have you seen those funky Redstone signs? This little guy is an artificer all the way. After he made that sick mace? I'm gonna say he'd run the battle smith archetype. Idk funny little goblin tinkerer is just fun to me.

Jimmy: Fighter, gunslinger archetype. He's a cowboy, look at him. What else could he possibly be? I know he doesn't have a gun (yet) but I think he deserves it with all the gunpowder. He's also Just Some Guy and sadly fighter is the most Just Some Guy class there is.

Pixlriffs: The archivist artificer subclass was literally made for this man. Tinkering around with insane redstone, litematica, the obsession with the past and knowing things he shouldn't necessarily know, like it's all there. It's perfect for him. I love him.

Sausage: Oath of Devotion paladin, for sure. He's the protector of Sanctuary, it's his duty to protect his friends and his people, to stay true to them no matter what. He will protect his people and those he cares about. Also you literally get access to the spell Sanctuary as part of the extended spell list. Come on.

Scott: Wild magic Sorcerer. If a wizard gives you a glass eye that is SO going to have random magical consequences, and with how often Owen goes between human and Llama I wouldn't be shocked if it was related. They're also charisma casters and look at him. Look at him.

Joey: Gunslinger fighter again but this time with the pirate background specifically. He literally has a gun. What else could he be?

Oli: The man is literally a college of glamor bard. Like this isn't even a question. Come on now.

False: Oh an artificer all the way, look at the steampunk aesthetic going on here. I wanna give her artillerist because she definitely seems like the type to develop a flamethrower, but I think alchemist fits her lore (the whole amnesia potions thing) a bit better. Another one I'm a little torn on.

Gem: What else could she be but a light cleric? She is the princess of the sun and she started a church for the sun. Light cleric. Boom.

Katherine: Definitely barbarian, but the subclass isn't clear. I might need to homebrew a monster hunter subclass here because while that would normally be a ranger thing I guess, this isn't the first time I've wanted to build a monster hunter with a big sword or big axe. For now, I'll say wolf totem warrior.

Shelby: Wild magic Sorcerer with really bad luck who decided to multiclass into the actual alchemist class on the side, but not enough to pick an archetype. Her spells go wrong all the time, often on accident, she doesn't learn from a book, she's having a great time. Sorry you got polymorphed into a frog lol.

Lizzie: Another wild magic sorcerer except she stopped trying after she turned herself into a cat and decided to instead become an arcane trickster rogue. She is not a cat, she prommy. She totally will not steal from you the moment you aren't looking. She enchanted her mask to make her look human. She is human. Worry more about your chests. Don't ask about the amethyst. She has expertise in deception.

I never show here why that Jecht mod on Breath of the Wild doesn’t look like either his NT model or something he had ever wear canon: Is because all is custom-frankenstein made. The face, using some model of some game, I try to edit it as much as I can to make it look as “in between” Original FF10 model and Dissidia Model, with some touch of Dissidia NT CG (were for example Jecht has body hair). Body speaking, using a lot of reference of bodybuilders not in season and even non-bodybuilder, just muscle NON-FAMOUS without the touch of Photoshop and based on medical “possible”, I remake the MK11 model for fit a accurate proportion, like make it big, but not big in a ridiculous way as some people tend to draw. Always with a large chest, but is based mode in Blitzball and how is a water game and usually in real life, people specialize in sport of water tend to have a bigger chest (bigger lungs). The clothes? completely based on Monster Hunter World set I used to play: A combination of Kulu Pants with the Oolong gloves. The necklace is a special detail: Those are Auron beads he wear around his hip for hold his Nog, this are from Gunslinger Stratos 3 crossover they made years ago, were one character got a full Auron custom in equal quality to NT models. As small detail, I resize the Nog for make it all look like a necklace around Jecht’s neck. So yes, I have done a custom stuff, everything for not use what NT did. I was close to make something relative to Braska, but I don’t like much add too much details vs function. For that reason is very simple clothes, specially because the pants follow Jecht’s basic pants have “x” at the side.

Baldr doesn't look like a Kingdom Hearts character. The same can be said for most of the DR characters excluding Vor. His overall design is akin to characters from God Eater, Code Vein, Gunslinger Stratos, and Nier. Personally, I don't think Baldr (or like I said, most of the DR characters except Vor) fits the Kingdom Hearts aesthetic. Don't get me wrong - that's not a bad thing. I love it. Kingdom Hearts need some diversity particularly in it’s characters, their personalities and the overall story. I wish there were more brown-skin characters who aren't archetypal villains but whatever.

That said, Nomura is really going in with the KHDR character designs. I'm starting notice a pattern with them. It makes me wonder if his inspiration for these character designs are coming from games like Gunslinger Stratos and God Eater in particular. Then again, Verum Rex and Gunslinger Stratos do share some of similarities that may or may not extend far beyond looks.
