I'm really glad the anime kept this in. I was worried they might not. This is the turning point for I'm in Love with the Villainess, where it becomes clear it's not just a silly isekai comedy, but a story that also earnestly discusses queer issues.
It's still fairly unusual for the kind of yuri that gets adapted to anime to outright have characters say "I'm gay", so the fact Rae frankly discusses her sexuality here is refreshing-- but on top of that, the show goes on to directly challenge homophobia.
Rae's behavior with Claire before this has been inappropriate (and they really should have toned it down in adaptations to make this convo work better, but alas) and that is acknowledged here. However, Claire moving away from Rae specifically because Rae states that she's gay is what's pointed out wrong, and the stereotype of "lesbians just can't control themselves and will creep on every woman they meet" is pointed out as wrong. This is a common stereotype that persists pretty much everywhere--the idea that it isn't "safe" for women to be around lesbians--and it is valuable that it's called out here. Gay people aren't more likely to be predatory that straight people, and that's something everyone should get through their heads.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
What's more, the idea of "oh she's not gay or bi she just happened to fall in love with a woman" or "it's just a love that transcends gender" isn't a super common stereotype in the US and a lot of other countries, but it is one that pops up constantly in anime and manga, because it's seen as somehow "more okay" for a character to kiss girls if she goes out of her way to say it doesn't make her a lesbian or bi/pan. (In the novel Rae does internally mention that bisexual people exist, btw, but she's just not one of them).
So Rae bluntly saying "no gender does matter to me. I'm a lesbian. I'm only attracted to women" is refreshing. "Oh she just fell in love with that one special girl, no reflection on her sexuality whatsoever" being called out as it's own form of prejudice is a pretty big deal.

Stuff that happens a lot in Yu-Gi-Oh:
- Loss of soul
- Having a boyfriend that only you can see
- H a i r
- Your deepest and most intense and profound emotions being inexorably entangled with particular dragons
- Some of the tensest sexual tension you've ever seen between two men with large hair (the hair) who are trying to kill each other with trading cards
- VERY ENORMOUS HAND AND ARM GESTURES
- Talking to your trading cards and they talk back
- A man in a big coat being a big bitch
- OSTs that have absolutely no business going as hard as they do
- Monsters with suspiciously juicy asses
- Solving and/or causing all your problems with card games
- Being sent to the hospital with a lethal case of Played Card Games Too Hard
- The hair getting EVEN BIGGER to show just exactly how fucking CRAZY you are getting
- A young idiot learning that he is queer how to play card games better
Stuff that happens every now and then in Yu-Gi-Oh:
- Playing actual Yu-Gi-Oh

in the face of all the homophobic anons flooding my inbox, there’s one thing i want to make abundantly clear:
gojo and geto are queer-coded regardless of whether or not you understand their relationship to be romantic. all it takes is one (1) critical thought to understand that romance is a dimension of queerness; it does not constitute it. yes, people understand their connection in a romantic context because that is a facet of their queerness. even if you don’t recognize the romantic dimension of their relationship, that does not negate the fact that gojo and geto’s characters & connection are indisputably and intentionally queered already.
i’m not saying they’re not romantically involved— on the contrary, anyone with half a fucking braincell and the ability to conduct surface-level textual analysis would clock that facet of their dynamic. what i’m saying is that the romantic dimension of their relationship does not singlehandedly make them queer simply because it happens to align with popular understandings and depictions of queerness. romance is there, yes, but romance alone does not constitute their queerness: they are queer alongside and independently of the axis of romance.
you can think of romance as a conduit— it’s one expression of their queerness, like a branch extending from a tree. when we say they are queered, we are beseeching you to stop pointing to the branch and insisting it is the entire tree. to be queer is to be insurgent, vibrant, subversive, effervescent— the branches extend endlessly from the infinitely faceted treetrunk. romance is merely one amongst many; it alone does not bear the insignia of queerity.
queerness is not an imposition upon them, it constitutes every aspect of their characters. it’s in geto’s monstrous femininity, it’s in gojo’s mournfully joyous disposition, it’s in both of their roles as guardians of children and protectors of chosen groups. it’s in the intimacy of their connection, it’s in their joy and their grief, it’s in their devotion and their tragedy. it quite literally is who they are, with or without the dimension of romance.
when these pseudo-intellectuals defend them from being deemed queer, they’re defending them from THEIR limited conception of what it means to be queer. in accusing everyone of Turning Them Gay, they don’t realize the call is coming from inside the house and that everything they love about gojo and geto was queer to begin with— just not in the one-dimensional way they understand queerness to operate.
if they stopped guzzling the heteropatriarchal kool-aid, it would become apparent to anyone with basic critical thinking skills that the ones who are ruining their characters are not the people who recognize gojo and geto for who they are, but those who break off the branch to beat the tree.

I love that Kurapika can represent all kinds of trans identities and it makes sense. Non-binary, transfem, transmasc, gender-fluid… it all just fits. He’s just so… gender.

Y'all can keep complaining about the lack of queer representation in anime, and the fact that when there is, it's usually censored. I mean, it breaks my heart to see that in 2022, a certain studio felt the need to cover up a kiss scene with a very convenient shot of a sword (Requiem of the Rose King, I'm looking at you!) Hell, I'm all for demanding more from these studios. It took us a while to get to Yuri On Ice where we had a gay relationship at the forefront (which, might I add, also had a kiss scene that was censored, a choice made outside of the creator's hands), and only about 5 years ago did Bloom Into You get adapted, plus Given shortly after that. Yeah, it's taken way too long for progressive anime to enter the limelight. Sure, there are a few wonderful queer series out there today (ex. Stranger by the Shore & Sasaki and Miyano) but when another series takes a step back from where we are, it's disappointing to say the least. That doesn't mean we should give up hope though. I believe it's important that we're grateful for what we have, and remember that anime won't always spell it out for us (cough cough SK8: the Infinity cough cough), and that's something we're unfortunately going to have to live with. Have hope, my friends. And if you're looking for a pick me up, a David Wald dub is always the way to go!

I was about to joke that Laid Back Camp doesn't get enough recognition for being queer-friendly (not to mention feminist!) anime, but you know what? Forget the joke, I'm saying it for real.
Laid Back Camp doesn't get enough recognition for being feminist, queer-friendly anime.
Tumblr media
I don't have a ton to add to that. I haven't watched the show with a dedicated "is this queer friendly" mindset, but as a queer person I can't remember any moments that made me uncomfy, and I can remember several moments where a lesser show would've easily made queer people the butt of the joke, and this one didn't.
Also I think even though we don't actually see whether Nadeshiko and Rin get together in the end, what we DO see is a beautiful relationship of mutual trust and affection, handled with care by every aspect of the show, developing between them. Their natures compliment one another and their sharp edges soften into one another as they grow closer. All of the relationships in this show are important, but the one between Nadeshiko and Rin is the real heartbeat of the whole thing.
I definitely think there should be more expressly queer representation in all media including anime, but I also enjoy and am comforted by this kind of ambient queer-friendliness. Where anime typically keeps me on my toes as far as objectionable content and badly handled tropes go, it's nice to be able to just relax into a show like you'd relax into a nice camping chair in front of a fire. I love Yuru Camp

So anime fans who liked spy x family and gay anime fans are both watching buddy daddies
Gay anime fans sit at the dinner table next to straight anime fans. “Is that all you’re gonna eat?” Asks the straight, already having consumed love is war season 2, horimiya, and fruits basket. “What are you talking about? This is practically a feast!” Says the gay, regurgitating Yuri On Ice and Bloom Into You so they can eat it again. Off to the side is buddy daddies, whether or not it is queer, they will likely still eat it.
In the corner, a trans anime fan nibbles at a corner of wonder egg priority and black butler. They are terribly thin.

First episode of the new GL, I’m in Love with the Villianess came out and it is SO GOOD! Pls go watch it and support this adorable GL.
The main character Rae Taylor is 100% canonically a lesbian! She says out right that the has no interest in the male love interests. The first episode did not spend any time on Rae’s Life before she got reincarnated. Which I personally really liked. It got straight into the plot and started off with Rae saying that she is in love with the villainess, Claire François. It has all the typical tropes of an Otome dating game and it was just so silly and goofy. I had a great time and so excited to see the rest of this!
