OK--when I was out of the cage I was SO scared, and when I was in the cage I was SO sad and unhappy.  Which I was almost all the time.  In the cage, I mean.  The other guys were marched out to work every day, which suddenly looked pretty good to me, but all I saw was just the lines going past the cell and guys lookin at me and callin me a crib bug and a cage monkey and stuff like that, and at chow they just talked to each other and never even looked at me.  Which was better than gettin beat up, of course. Some old con came by with what he called “reading material,” which was, like, magazines, and I asked him for “Hackerlab” or “Digitstan,” and he just looked at me and handed me an old piece of crap called “Truck Repair.”  Which I read several times.  Till one day the bars slid open and a guard said “Here’s your new roommate.”

The dude that stumbled in was a little guy my age who was, like, even more scared looking than I must’ve been.  When the bars slammed behind him I thought he was gonna jump right outta his DEPT. OF CORRECTIONS suit.  Then he got his back to the wall like I was gonna attack him for sure.  And as lonely as I’d been, now I was all weirded out cuz you’ve got no idea how small one of those cells can be when there’s TWO dudes inside the thing!  So he was about to cry and I was gettin mad, just cuz he was there, and cuz I was gonna be the one that had to tell him all the stuff he had to do every day.  Cuz now he was a convict.  But while I was telling him, I noticed, hey, this dude is hot.  I couldn’t tell why, I’d never really got into explaining that stuff to myself.  But he was hot, I knew that.

So we spent about 40 hours just talkin to each other, and I found out who he was and so forth. His named was Bodhi (BODE-hee), because his parents were “film people,” and they were “very spiritual,” which must’ve meant they were really rich and sort of weird.   So not a surprise, one night Bodhi had, like, gone out and got loaded and had an accident with their Tesla or whatever, and now he was in prison, and he was, like, totally screwed and totally lost and falling apart.  There was this really bad moment at the start, when he looked at my bunk and he saw the magazine with trucks all over it, and he said, “Is that what you’re into?”  Like if I said yes, he would’ve gone all limp and died right there.

“Course not,” I told him. “I’m a gamer.”

“So am I!” he said.

From then on, everything was completely great.  Suddenly, we both had plenty to do—which neither of us ever did before, but that just made it better.

Then a couple days later, a guard took us out of our cage and marched us off to something he called “your labor detail.”  Which sounded bad!  But at least we’d both be doing it.

Each image is tied to a personal experience with racism and the bell is tied to my very first memories of elementary school where a kid my age at the time came up at uttered those words to me and walked away. I don’t blame the kid at all because we were so both so young but it’s still not a great first memory of elementary school to have. SAC 201 Intermediate Laser Cutting: If you have taken the intro to Laser Cutting and you/re looking for a fun and interesting class, take this class to learn more about the Laser Cutter. In this class you'll learn how to make a 3D object on the Laser Cutter using a technique called kerf-cuts. Kerf cuts allow you to create a 3D object from a flat piece of wood. By the end of the class students will have a general understanding of creating boxes using the laser cutter including creating of a latch mechanism and customization of the above. After completion of the class, students will be able to create with a variety of small boxes on the laser cutter and customize all aspects of the boxes. Hacker Lab. 6-8PM. $25 for members, $50 for non-members.
