Адриановият вал се простира на 73 мили или 130км от западното до източното крайбрежие на Обединеното кралство. Строежа на стената, който започва през 122 сл. Хр. по заповед на римския император Адриан, за да “раздели варварите [пиктите и бригантите на север] от римляните” отнема около 6 години. Стената е построена от римски военни части. Адриановият вал имал 14 крепости, охранявани порти на всяка миля, разделени от по две наблюдателници. Отпред като допълнителна отбранителна мярка имало дълбок окоп. В най-високите си участъци стената достигала 4,6 метра, а дебелината ѝ била 3 метра - достатъчно, за да позволи по нея да се разхожда караул. Адриановият вал бил мултикултурен център, на който били разположени гарнизони от различни части на Римската империя - днешните Източна и Западна Европа както и Северна Африка. В близост до всяка крепост се установили села, обитавани от цивилно население, което развивало търговия, предлагало развлечения и всички културни, религиозни и базисни нужди на ежедневния живот. Животът на Адриановия вал в този си вид процъфтявал три столетия, преди стената да бъде изоставена поради напускането на римските гарнизони.

Scenes from our trip as we work our way down to London 1. Random waterfall I spotted by chance while Jim was taking pictures on the other side of the road. 2 & 3. Twelve Apostles Stone Circle - my first henge! It wasn’t marked and was just sitting in a field. One stone is missing completely, and the others are so eroded that at first we couldn’t tell if that was it. Still, there is something awe-inspiring in the fact that people considered that spot important enough to mark it with standing stones that you can still see and touch thousands of years later. 4 - 10. Hadrian’s Wall. So. Freaking. Cool. We walked a mile of it down to the River Irthing and back with some significant changes in elevation. It is one of those places I could have happily explored for hours.
