Thank you for those of you who turned out to Extra Life this year, to support even though there were tons of reasons why this year was a rough one (global recession, shorter stream, poor marketing, everything else *gestures vaguely*, etc).

This year was wild as always. I’m hoping to see a bit of a reevaluation and a refresh going forward on what works and what doesn’t and maybe a new take on the stream for next year. It’s always the end (AH) where things kick off and get the correct amount of unhinged, which everyone waits for! 😂 Things kinda lag in the middle but that’s time that could be better used.

Alright, Kalos CS is live!  It's not Master Mode yet, which means we need to do that stupid thing where you have to bring as many types as possible, and don't get the extra Champion Spirits, ruining my EX plans.  Thanks for that.  Anyway, I opted to go with an F2P composition, because I hate myself.

Vs. Wikstrom I initially attempted this with Shauntal, who I expected would be okay.  She was not.  Lack of raw sync damage to truck center.  Her grid would've saved it for sure, but as it stood, no luck.  So I had to swap to Helena, whose sync nuke is stronger thanks to having a grid.  This was almost a disaster, though.  I wasn't sure she'd finish the job, what with side spamming Earthquake.  But her evasion buffs from trainer move actually saved her.  Nice.  Wikstrom himself seems...spooky here.  If you don't finish pre-sync, his trainer move is +3 attack +1 crit, and that crit stuff gets nasty.  Moreover, I never once saw him fail to land flinch.  I'm not sure if I'm just unlucky or what, but he hit every shot.  And this being match 1, it wasn't increased secondary effects.  I dunno.  The man seems dangerous.

Vs. Siebold I accidentally did a stupid, and used Lodge Elesa, meaning I couldn't use Electric against the guy weak to Electric.  It's just as well.  Hau is a consistent disappointment, and this asshole has Slo-Mo 9 and AoE attacks.  Every hit slowed us down, so there goes Inertia on Hau and Elesa, to say nothing of the horrific gauge issues that N will now suffer.  So instead, we stalled him.  Which it turns out is also a bad idea, because Razor Shell defense drops.  This guy...seems nasty.  Like, I kinda respect the attempt to slow down Dual Rats by making Electric-weak a difficult stage, but they're like the only ones who don't give a shit.  I highly doubt not having full gauge will impact Ash’s buddy move in a way that matters.

Vs. Malva Okay, really funny story.  We won this first try, but we didn't deserve to.  I brought Grant because Roark doesn't have his grid yet, and I needed weather to make this work, right?  So I brought Blaine, trying to cover a Fire-type.  Turns out, I'm fighting Malva, who is also Fire type and likes the Sun, but also sets it herself and seems to have extended duration, which is neat/nasty.  But hey, that means Grant's good, right?  Haha...no.  She buffs speed constantly.  You can't Cakewalk here for shit.  Worst of all, I brought Hop, who is weak to Fire.  I did not deserve to live.  But this was improved secondary effects, and if Grant is useful for anything, it's flinch.  So he flinch locked them.  Comedy gold.  Anyway, I’ve also been informed she apparently has Sentry Entry x2?  I missed that, but what’s funny about it is that I just assumed Grant dealing like 2000 damage on sync was normal.  Because he sucks for damage that badly.

Vs. Drasna I decided to try Clair on a whim.  Cyrus and Zinniquaza likely could've handled it, but with Flying required in the last fight, I didn't want to use Winona, and Gyarados matched the earlier Misty, so I was kinda out of weather.  So, Clair.  She can get a nice powerup based on paralysis instead of relying on the rain, so I brought our good friend Whitney, who can not only paralyze reliably, but also flinch lock the opponent at the end.  Lodge Cynthia helped with crit rate needs and did her tanking role well enough.

Vs. Diantha Nanu/Kahili is a known devastating combo in Master Mode.  You think base Diantha did anything to stand up against this?  Because we're not in Master Mode, even Maylene was sufficient to the task of "don't die."  Kahili exploded things for 34k damage.  I took increased secondary effect for Nanu's Bite flinch.  This was the easiest of the fights.

Final Thoughts It's always staggering to feel the difference between normal CS and Master Mode CS.  I had forgotten.  That said, I remember trying similar with Sinnoh when it came out, and getting absolutely hard-walled by Cynthia's evasion bullshit, so this is progress.  All but Wikstrom were first-try clears, so that does bode well for later success.

But.

Wikstrom feels like he has a ton of HP, and the bonus crit rate that nearly demands getting rid of him before first sync is gonna be a problem.  The flinch rate feels like Aggravation definitely exists, which is going to be an unending nightmare.

Siebold has impeccable tools to handle a lot of Electric-types in the meta.  Outside of Dual Rats, this feels decisively damning.  Even Eevee Kris, who I love, will likely have issues with being constantly slowed down and having to spam a 3-gauge move.

Malva's anti-Cakewalk shenanigans makes every common Rock-type, barring Chad Roark when he gets his grid, basically useless.  But even Roark gets bopped by Sentry Entry x2.  This is a stage that’s demanding either Classic Blue or SS Diantha.  That said, she did seem flinchable.  I recognize that I had a bonus parameter, but I almost wonder if that isn’t part of the intent, given the extended duration weather.  It’s too hard to guarantee, so you’re probably better off changing weather outright, but...yeah.  This stage is probably the nastiest of the four in Master Mode.  Between blanking most Rock types by default, demanding weather changing shenanigans, and having ridiculous offensive power, this is one to watch for.

Drasna...okay, I don't remember her fight well.  Sorry, girl.  Clair’s just too good.

Diantha I think dropped special attack, which is really interesting.  Most flying types to my knowledge are special, so this feels like a strong gambit.  The physical options I can think of right now are Kahili (queen), Darach, the new Palentine’s Elesa, and Anni Steven.  With Anni Steven inverting those opening debuffs, shoutout to them for making a stage Anni Steven is optimal on.  But also shoutouts to 5/5 Lysandre’s Downside Up, which is now hilarious.

On the whole, I'd say they're about Hoenn-tier right now.  There are definitely some nasty tools that will become much worse in Master Mode, but they're not quite Sinnoh, stonewalling my progression with F2P even before Master Mode dropped.

Hey! I'm glad to hear you don't mind me barging into your ask box without preamble, haha.

Amanda is a complicated character and in my opinion her character arc suffered a bit with the switcheroo of show runners. I don't know if you know this, but Warren Leight, the "creator" of Nick, Amanda, Barba and Carisi, directed the show from seasons 13 to 17. Season 18 was handled by Rick Eid, and seasons 19 and 20 by Michael Chernuchin who introduced Peter Stone to SVU. If you ask me one can tell there is a shift in tone in seasons 19 and 20. Chernuchin has a very different style.

Funnier still, Warren Leight returned as show runner in season 21 and has been directing up till now. So you get to see the visions of three different show runners (as well as who they shipped and who they didn't lol). Also, what priorities everyone had. I always thought some things were dropped after season 17 so I was pleasantly surprised to see them resurface in season 21.

On this note, do you have a favorite season so far? And a favorite character?

I made it a point starting a few years ago to not look into anything personal about actors/actresses/musicians or any behind the scenes stuff of my favorite shows because I always find out that bad stuff happened and it ruins my enjoyment of the show or characters on the show. For example, I don't know if you were ever in the Glee fandom, but everything with Cory and Mark killed 95% of my enjoyment of the show. Now, any time I think about Glee, the only things I enjoy are Klaine, Kurt, Blaine, as singular characters, Seblaine (the non-canon pairing of Sebastian and Blaine), Quinntana (though given how things ended with Naya, that's now sad, too), and Quinn and Santana as singular characters.

Also, all the behind the scenes stuff on Chicago PD that Sophia Bush spoke about that had to do with Beghe and the others, has really made me hate the Voight character and it's even interfered with my enjoyment of Upstead (Jay/Hailey pairing, if you didn't know) at times, given that Jesse and Sophia used to date, and now we know he didn't stick up for her when she needed it. Anyway, sorry, got off track there a bit. Wow, that's a good bit of showrunners to go through in a few seasons. And I loved Nick and Barba and now miss them. I'm not yet at the eps where Carisi leaves SVU, but dammit, I'll be there soon enough and it's already making me sad. As for Peter Stone, I liked his character. A few months ago I binged Chicago Justice and am now pissed off that they canned the show after just one season. Also... ANTONIO! *Cries* I loved his character and still miss him after all this time.

I can sort of tell that there has been a different direction going on in some seasons. Like, there was the dark episode where Liv beat the shit out of that guy who had kidnapped her. Another dark one was the episode where she was in the prison and almost got raped. A third dark one was the episode with Ellie's Mom/Noah's Crazy kidnapper Grandma.

Also, there have been seasons where Liv has been a total bitch, and then other seasons where she's super nice. So, I didn't know for sure that things had been changing behind the scenes, but I suspected.

I'm about to watch an ep that has a bit of focus on Carisi and his family. I was about to start watching the ep within the last week, but one of my sisters and two of her kids were moving out, so I spent the whole week and weekend packing up their stuff and helping her/them move into the new house and then falling into bed early each night.

However, I DO hope to watch more eps tomorrow after I finish the last 4 episodes of season 3 of another show I'm binging. Hmm. Favorite season? Favorite character? Tough questions. I really like most of the cast, so it's difficult for me to have one favorite. Liv, Barba, Carisi, Amanda, Nick, and Alex Cabot are my top favorite characters of the show. Fin, Elliot, and Dodds Jr. are my second favorites. Favorite season? A tie between season 15 and season 16.

Season 15 because of episode 22: Reasonable Doubt, where it's implied that Nick and Amanda slept together.

Season 16 because it had Carisi's first appearance, episode 1: Girls Disappeared, and I've liked his character from the beginning.

AWW!! OMG! This like super duper kind, and maybe a little more credit than I deserve. I am still learning with Blaine, as this is my first go at him. I want to make him my Blaine but at the same time keeping his voice. BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH!! It does mean a lot to me and makes me feel like I’m not doing him a grave injustice. :D

Also, I live to torture my characters. As bad as that sounds haha! I love going for character growth and making them suffer as they get there cause, really, it’s the most human thing! I think we all can relate to that on some level in our own way. And you become a stronger person for it and I enjoy taking my characters through that journey. It makes the outcome even better and feel genuine and real.

Switch AU Part 1

Okay it’s finally cooled down and it’s on my mind so I’mma talk about the DOE Switch AU.  I know a lot of you don’t know much about DOE, especially because I haven’t finished posting the first book and stuff, but maybe some people will find this fun?

Also yeah this is part 1 because I wrote this up and realized I’m gonna have to make more posts to cover everything haha whoops

The Society was shut down due to a fight with Magics; the Defenders were blamed for the damage

During that fight, three of the Defenders, Amara, Rabi, and Sandra, were killed

Three others were heavily affected/permanently injured by the fight

Blaine was blinded

Like a lot of the Defenders he left with little trace

Ended up in full out war with Magics, attacking high ranking members and picking them off whenever he can with his sniper

Lots of pent up rage

Hungry for vengeance

Kirian was deafened

They worked on a farm for a while trying to get used to their new disability

Unabashedly loud (not that they were quiet to begin with)

Has no idea what to do with their grumpy ass kid

Skylar was mentally fucked (and might have had his powers screwed over by Magics as well)

Is the son of the founder, but he’s all but disowned her at this point

These days he’s basically attached at the hip to Lizz

He suffers from pretty severe anxiety and paranoia, as well as PTSD after being in the heads of the teammates that died

Was in a relationship with Blaine but they broke up after the shutdown

Arin was originally the leader, but after the fight she left, claiming that she needed some time to think.  No one’s heard from her since

Guilty as hell about like...all of this

Possibly doing something with Lucifer/Gabriel

Lizz is pretty successful

She works as a secretary but owns so many shares in the company that no one fucks with her

Never had the same motivations to build her own company that James did, but is nonetheless money savvy

All things considered he’s considerably less fucked than canon!Tado

Was in a relationship with Amara, still kinda fucked up about her death but has moved on for the most part

Overall Thoughts: The New York arc comes to a close, and it does so decently. It’s an enjoyable episode with some fun music, some pretty hilarious scenes, and it properly concludes most of the stories that they’d introduced for this arc. Still, there are things I have a hard time with – the Samcedes break up in particular. Let’s get into it.

What I Like:

That Kurt and Blaine are actually allowed to have a conversation about their relationships and the fact that Blaine lied to Kurt. I don’t really like that Kurt took some of the blame, but Blaine was fully apologetic, and not in the way that he was when he admitted he cheated – genuinely apologetic, taking the full blame, not insinuating at all that anything Kurt did led him to this. Character development, anyone?

Sam having the opportunity to cheat on Mercedes and not taking it. Not only that, but thinking that another woman kissing him was cheating. As much as I have frustrations with his character, particularly when it comes to his views on sex and how everyone encourages those views, he is a sweetheart.

The whole scene with the script, except for one part, which I’ll mention in a bit.

Mercedes going on a mall tour and taking Brittany and Santana with her and already having a group of people following her and excited to see her perform. It’s what she deserves.

What I Don’t Like:

That a fantasy script sequence shows Blaine and Brittany being more intimate with each other than they are ever allowed to be with their actual love interests. Also, the “mostly lesbian” line.

While I get that Kurt is in his right to be angry that Blaine lied to him, it does concern me a little bit that he has such a physically violent reaction. We’ve seen this only once before, when he kicked that chair over in season 1, which makes me think this is just a director thing (even though the episodes weren’t directed by the same person) and not actually a character thing, but it’s still a bit concerning. Kurt, you should be able to express your anger without hitting/kicking things.

The fact that they had Sam and Mercedes break up by Mercedes essentially saying “it isn’t fair for me to ask you not to fuck other women, so go do that”. Seriously, this entire storyline was so dragged down by the idea that men literally cannot survive without sex. I would have much preferred that they break up because they will be separated for a long time and their relationship is still fairly new. Instead we have Mercedes basically saying “Yo, Sam, go fuck all the girls you want, and then when I’m ready we can get married” like, what? ALSO Sam saying “no matter who I’m with or what I’m doing, just know I’d rather be doing it with you” aw how sweet that you’re going to fuck another girl and think of Mercedes while you do it like that’s not totally disrespectful to both Mercedes and the other girl? Think of the girl you’re with, damn Sam. But of course it’s played off as super romantic because Hollywood. Seriously, why does Hollywood think that a guy is going to literally die if he doesn’t have sex? Do they not know how harmful that is? How many women suffer because of men who think they are owed sex because they’re men and therefore they have Needs? Jesus Christ (I’m feeling particularly strongly about this right now because of the attack in Toronto that happened for exactly this reason, and it’s just so avoidable and unnecessary. Fuck).

Aaaaaaaand once again Artie has literally nothing to do.

Glee did so well with avoiding the quirky, special snowflake character right until now. Why, writer lady? Why?

Songs:

Shakin’ My Head: The song is so dancey and fun but the lyrics are so strange haha

All of Me: A nice duet, though I do feel it goes on a bit long.

Girls on Film: Kind of a weird one. I don’t know how I feel about the aesthetic of it.

Glitter in the Air: I mean, I get this is that writer lady’s first time hearing Rachel sing, but it isn’t mine, and these power ballads of hers just ain’t as powerful as they used to be. Sorry, honey.

No Time at All: Too long as well, and kind of unnecessary. I wish they’d just done part of it, like maybe the end? I don’t know.

American Boy: I was skeptical when they released that this was going to be one of the songs in this episode, but it ended up being really good!

Pompeii: A great finale song! Sam in particular sounds awesome on it, and that scene where he goes back to McKinley always gets me all emotional, even though he’s only been gone from McKinley for like 7 episodes.

Final Thoughts: It’s a fun episode, but the way the Samcedes break-up is dealt with really brings it down for me. I felt they deserved better than “It’s too hard for Sam not to have sex”, especially after all they’d been through. Other than that, though, it’s a decent season finale, and sets up next season in an okay way (aside from leaving Klaine on such a good note only to pull the rug out from under us in episode one of the next season).

01 - Talk about the first ship you ever had

That’s a bit hard to pick because I was honestly shipping stuff before I even understood what shipping was - like I remember being a literal child and watching Digimon 4 and being extremely upset when Izumi ended up with Takuya instead of Koji lol. So it’s hard figuring out what the first shop was.

I can say, though, that the first ship I was, like, consciously into, that I started reading/writing fic for and that got me into fandom was Ron/Hermione. It’s still a ship that means a lot to me today, and still, imo, one of the best straight canon pairings of any series, ever. It was super formative to me, it helped me make friends and develop my writing, and to this day I can see traces of R/Hr in the dynamics I enjoy. It’s the Ultimate Good Ship, to me.

2 - Talk about three of the most important ships throughout your life.

Well, first one was Ron/Hermione, easy. Then… As I grew up I got into anime fandons and I fell in love with One Piece and specifically with the idea of Zoro/Robin - they were my favorite characters (especially Zoro, who remains on my Hall of All-Time Faves to this day) and they had this interesting tension that immediately sparked my interest. It was a small ship, but in the brazilian fandom I wrote A LOT for them, often along with a girl who was one of my closest fandom friends at the time. It was AWESOME, we used to talk about them for hours, and my writing also developed a lot. One Piece as a whole meant a lot to me at the time, and shipping Zorobin allowed me to channel all that love into creative energy. It was great.

Then time passed and I got into Glee (lol rio past me) and I was obsessed with Kurt Hummel as a character, so for a while I basically read every Kurt/Original Male Character fic I could get my hands on - the hiatus between s1 and S2, when all we knew about season 2 was that Kurt Would Get a Boyfriend, was probably my greatest time in the Glee fandom. Of course, everything went downhill when Kurt’s Actual Boyfriend was introduced and he turned out to be The Most Annoying Character In The History of Everything (to this day, Blaine remains on my Hall of Hated Characters). Then I was stuck in Glee fandom hell, and I read a lot of Kurtofsky, Kurt/Sam, even Puckurt sometimes. It was my way of surviving lol I also discovered Brittana at the time, and while I wouldn’t count as one of my biggest ships because I never Suffered for them, they were pretty formative in that they were my first ever canon gay ship. Plus, in the context of the terrible writing Glee always had, their chemistry really created something magical, especially in the beggining. Landslide still gives me chills, and Santana’s confession is still maybe one the most beautiful love confessions I’ve ever seen in television.

05 - Do you have any poly ships?

Nope. I’m a monogamist in every way lol Never got the hang of ot3s.

12 - Have you ever been disappointed when your ship finally got together?

I mean, everything about the development of Brittana sucked on the season following Santana’s confession but I can’t really say I was DISAPPOINTED because at this point I was stuck in the toxic position of hating everything that happened in the show, so I didn’t care anymore. Besides Brittana… I mean, most of my ships never got together lol The few who did, like R/Hr, lived to my expectations nicely. So I guess no.

18 - Talk about a moment which made you question an entire ship.

Ok so… During my Homestuck phase (yeah I had GOOD TASTE for fandons cnejjseiwiiewj fml) I was super into Gamzee/Tavros and… I mean, if you’ve read Homestuck you know Hussie pretty much discarded Gamzee as a tridimensional character post-Murderstuck, and Tavros’ role in the story was limited to his relationship with Vriska (who I hated with A PASSION). So I did have a lot of moments where I was like “why the hell do I still ship this”, because it was as if canon was constantly mocking me for even trying to take these characters seriously anymore (again, if you’ve read Homestuck, you know that’s not an exaggeration). Ultimately fanon contend was enough to keep me shipping it, though, until I just dropped the comic altogether.

20 - Talk about a ship you feel alone in shipping.

I don’t think there’s one. There are ships I wished there was more contend for (like Kallo/Gil from mea) but I don’t think I ever felt alone shipping something. I don’t ship many rarepairs.

21 - Is there a ship you just don’t get, but have nothing against?

Hmm Idk… Usually when I don’t have anything against a ship I can at least grasp why people ship it (St*cky, for example). If I really really DON’T GET IT, I’m probably gonna have some negative feelings about it (like St*rkqu*ll or W*nterIr*n). So, the answer is no, I guess.

26 - Have you noticed a pattern in your shipping? Is there a romantic dynamic you’re more drawn to?

Like I said, I can see traces of R/Hr in a lot of my other ships lol I enjoy Tension and Bickering and conflict that arrises from bad communication/poor handling of emotional issues. I like visual contrast a lot (it’s ridiculous, but the quickest way to turn me off a stony fic/art is Tony having blue eyes. It’s one of the reasons I’m not very drawn to 616 stony lol I just like smol Tony with brown eyes more. Like I said, it’s ridiculous). I also like when characters are opposites on the surface but actually share important/crucial similarities in essence.

Finally, I pretty much only ship stuff when I’m able to give a shit about both characters involved. I need to be able to care about both characters in some level, outside of their ship dynamic, so I tend to ship characters that have similar levels of development. Usually I have a preference (Steve over Tony, Tavros’ over Gamzee, Ron over Hermione, etc), but I need to like both characters to see them in equal footing. Otherwise it’s just not that appealing to me.

I guess in some level, I'd want a relationship like Ron and Hermione's, preferably without seven years of pining and misunderstandings lol But as a rule I don't necessarily look for relationships I'd want to ship - I just look for dynamics that touch me.

I've always wanted to but was always afraid to. I'm able to write out research papers but when it comes to fics I'm hopeless, haha. But yes! Kurt starts dating Adam for real until he catches Adam cheating on him (*cue angst 'ALL BY MY SELLLFFFF'). He calls Blaine and they talk for a few hours. Time passes by and while Kurt feels slightly bitter that Blaine is happy, he finally learns how to be a friend to him and less selfish.(3/4)Months pass by when he travels back to Lima because Burt has cancer. They talk and Blaine let's Kurt cry it out. He ends up texting his bf that he can't make it to their date. Kurt spends time at home doing nothing until Blaine comes over to spend time with him. Kurt points out that his bf would get mad but Blaine points out that Kurt is his bestfriend. Eventually Blaine and the bf breakup which leaves Kurt to cheer him up. Once Tina and Sam catch them making out for the 4th time they demand that they fess up. They get back together. New Directions win Nationals and this time Kurt is the one who has a ring hiddenWrite that shit up and send it to me, I'll beta it for real. Because this is good. Question, what does this boyfriend look like? I could get behind this version of events. Kurt and Blaine having normal relationships with other people and coming back together. Man, poor Burt really suffers in our fics because we know he's the key to Kurt's feels. Lol.
