Halloweenathon:Island of Lost Souls
Tumblr media
So today we are looking at a movie that I had I had watched....Cept it turns out I never saw the ending before
In this 1932 film Edward Parker (Richard Arlen ) finds himself on the island of Dr Moreau (Charles Laughton ) who has been turning animals into people through surgery and is keeping Parker to mate him with a Panther woman ,Lota (Kathleen Burke )
OK first ,I just wanna say this poster is a LIE ,as it makes the movie seem like it is aboust the Panther Woman seducing and killing people ,when in accuality,Lota is a sympathetic character and the villain is Dr Moreau
So this is a pre code classic and I say a true horror film. The Beast men are scary (Peops to makeup man Wally Westmore ) ,dealing with vivisections ,and Charles Laughton is an effective villain,a calm yet morally bankrupt mad scientist with a god complex and a whip Besides LAughton you also get some great performances by Kathleen Burke as Lota the PAnther woman and Bela Lugosi in a small but memorable role as The Sayer of The Law,the leader of the Beast Men (He is also the most qoutable character"ARE WE NOT MEN!").ALso love the climax that is awesome
Like many a horror film though the weak aspect is the main leads, who are fine but just not interesting and the ending is kind of unintentionally funny
Overall its a good flick do reccomend

Hey, so I was thinking about having a mini SPN marathon on Halloween and I’m trying to decide what episodes (other than the actual Halloween ones) would have a good seasonal, spooky vibe to them. One I’ve got right now is Scarecrow, but otherwise I’m undecided. Do you have any suggestions? :)
OOH WHAT A FUN IDEA!
Scarecrow is great! And obviously 4.07 because that’s pretty much the halloweeniest episode there is.
Maybe Crossroad Blues or Croatoan from s2? They both feel spooky and autumnal… ooh, or Hollywood Babylon maybe?
ooh or maybe Monster Movie? There’s Oktoberfest in it, and it’s both hilarious and spooky…
Maybe Something Wicked? Come to think of it, there was a lot of good spooky in s1. Asylum? Hell House if you need a bit of a laugh with all the spooky…
I’m trying to think of things in later seasons, but as the show grew, some of the spook factor dissipated, you know? It’s not as spooky when we all know how to deal with ghosts and monsters. Things that were creepy or spooky in s1, the Winchesters take care of like nothing by s5, you know?
Hmmm… maybe Thin Lizzie (just because of the lizzie borden references?), or The Chitters?
In s12, The Foundry and American Nightmare are both super creepy, and Twigs and Twine and Tasha Banes.
S13 has Breakdown (which I love for the creepy factor), and Funeralia.
s14, HECK WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THIS SOONER. Mint Condition (Horror Movie Ghosties!) and Nightmare Logic (what is even real? which might be a good one to rewatch just for what the current canon situation is, you know?)
Heck I know even know how many episodes that is *counts* oh dear… 18… I don’t know how long a marathon you were looking for, but I think that’s definitely a good start. :’D
ETA: mel just informed me that TNT is showing a halloween marathon, too, from 10 am until 7 pm. These are the episodes they’re showing:
10:00 AM S3|E3: Bad Day At Black Rock11:00 AM S3|E11: Mystery Spot12:00 PM S3|E13: Ghostfacers1:00 PM S4|E5: Monster Movie2:00 PM: S4|E6: Yellow Fever3:00 PM: S5|E8: Changing Channels4:00 PM: S6|E15: The French Mistake5:00 PM: S8|E8: Hunteri Heroici6:00 PM: S13|E16: Scoobynatural

I´m sorry but it will never not be funny to me how in Jurassic park if you stand still Tyranusarus Rex can´t see you. I just imagine this giant beast, with itty bitty arms, constantly running into things. The other dinousars just rolling their eyes. For gods sake Rexie just wear your glasses. I know you think you look stupid but that is the 9 tree this goddam morning!
could you imagine them making giant ass glasses for Rexie to just slip on and then be like “oh yes, there’s the food. excuse me i must munch” and then that being the other dinosaurs’ entire weekly entertainment? XD i would watch tf outta that animated movie tbf. Land Before Time is a classic that will never be touched, but more animated dino movies PLEASE.
it makes it even more funny cos (and there are like.. literally hundreds if not thousands of discussions/articles about this) that T-Rex probably had good eye sight. i’ve seen a varying mish mash of reasons WHY people think this, i’ve seen people sourcing the books, hell even the movie in some instances (didn’t one guy stop moving and then T ate em anyway?? shit i need to add this to the Halloweenathon movieathon list huh??), and even genuine scientific articles about dinosaurs have mentioned it. i’ve even seen articles about how the misconception came about. it’s some great reading if you’re bored and annoyed at the lack of new and decent Netflix documentaries.

Land of the Dead
Problems, already, with the HalloweenAThon:
It turns out I don't own "Land of the Dead", which was supposed to be today's movie. Damn. Substitute: "Undead".
Cool movie. We'll see how it works out.

Halloweenathon :Once Upon a Midnight Scary
Tumblr media
SO I stumbled upon this Vincent Price lead Halloween special and I gotta discuss it
In this 1979 special a vampire (Vincent Price )tells excerpts of The Ghost Who Belonged to Me,The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and The House with a Clock in its Walls
So this is an odd special ,but charming .The best way to describe this special is it is Vincent Prices book club .He will tell a bit of the story but then will be like "Well you gotta read the book to get EVERYTHING".Vincent Price makes for a magnificent horror host, whish he did more stuff like this .Theres some good performance by Severin Darden as the enigmatic wizard Johnathan in House With a Clock In its Walls and a perferctly berillaint performance by Rene Auberjunois as Ichabod Crane in Legend of Sleepy Hollow ,though the rest of the acting is just OK .GHost that Belonged To Me was the weakest segment but both Sleepy Hollow and House with a Clock In Its Walls are a ton of fun.I do wish the special was longer but it does its job:It makes me want to read Ghost That Belongs To Me and HOuse With a Clock in Its Walls or at least see other adaptations (I have already read Sleepy Hollow )
This is fun and a good spooky starter pack for kids, though I like the idea of it more then the finished project

Halloweenathon:GHostwatch
Tumblr media
Today we are looking at something controvercial,aBBC TV movie....That people thought was real
In this 1992 movie we hold witness to a BBC Halloween special, where various presenters investigate a supposedly haunted house
The strength of Ghostwatch is also why it was so controvercial :It is grounded in reality, the entire thing is presented like a real live TV Special ,with the cast consisting of actual presenters, personaltiess the British public would be familiar with playing themselves like Michael Parkinson,Sarah Greene,Mike Smith and Craig Charles (Who I will admit as an American/sci fi dork is the only one I know due to Red Dwarf ),and it is all in the confines of this special format,so when the horror amps up it feels very visceral and real....In fact a lot of people thought it was.....It is not. This is what we would call a mockumentary,it was done by the BBC's drama department ,but much like Orson Welles Halloween broadcast of War of the Worlds back in the 30's a lot of folks got fooled ,and that caused it to become controvercial
Now I am of course an American watching this 30 years later and while it doesnt have the same impact on me as it did on audiences then.....I still think this is an effective scary movie ,especially the ending .Also props to the presenters who give really realistic performances
Overall an effectively scary mockumentary that I highly reccomend

Hallloweenathon Bride of Chucky
Tumblr media
(Note before I start the review,I used to see the cover of this in the video store as a kid and it creeped me out )
So I am a fan of the Chucky series ,and Ihave seen all the movies.....EXCEPT for the topic of this review Bride of Chucky, and having seen it,I have now seen all the movies....Still need to see the show .....Onto review
In this 1998 film Chucky(Brad Douriff) is back with his old flame Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly ) ,seeking to regain human form with the help of an amulet ,going on a road trip with an unsuspecting young couple ,Jade (Katherine Heigel ) and Jesse (Nick Stabile )
Childs Play is an interesting franchise cause it is one of the few series where every installment is solid and its not afraid to mix things up.This is the 4th installment in the series and its changes a lot of things
1.NO Andy Barclay .See Andy was the main character of the first three films and he wont come back till a few installments down the line
2.More of an emphasis on humor .This film is first and foremost a dark comedy
3.We have a new figure in the form of another villain Chuckys girlfriend Tiffany .Tiffany is a major player in the franchise and has definately has place in the hearts of many a horror fan
4......Chucky is the lead .Yeah we do have the human couple but the film is all about the relationship between Chucky and Tiffany
As for what I think of the film itself :This is fun with good jokes and over the top kills .What makes the film is the two villains ,which are really protrayed brillaintly by both the effects tema and the vocal performances of Brad Douriff and Jennifer Tilly .I also admire the performances of John Ritter (Playing against type as Jades controling policeman uncle ),Alexis Arquette and Gordon Michael Woolvet ,and I admire the direction of Ronny Yu
The main problem with the film.....I dont give a damn about Jade and Jesse ,which is weird cause this series has some really likable heroes, but these two are just kind of there
Overall I had a fun time with this film,Id have to do a marathon to know where this would place on the series as a whole ,but on its own its fun

Halloweenathon Hellboy Seed of Destruction
Tumblr media
So for this Halloweenathon I wantred to read some early issues of a horror superhero, the choices were Swamp Thing,Hellboy and Werewolf by Night and the winner was Hellboy ,so I read the first arc of Hellboy
So in this 1994 comic arc we meet Hellboy a demon summoned to Earth during WWII,who is now investigating the circumstances that lead to the death of his adopted father Professor Broom joined by pyrokinetic Liz Sherman and fishman Abe Sapien
So as someone mostly familiar with the film version of Hellboy done by Guillermo Del Torrothis was really surreal cause there are segments of this story are adpted fairly close in the movie the movie ....And others are so diffrent.Like the FRogmen in this comic become the monster Sammeal but the biggest surprise is Professor Broom DIES very early in the story .Also am impressed how damn close Del Torro kept the visuals of ther movie to the comic
Hellboy is an interesting protag a basically blue collar monster slayer ,Mike Mignolas art is breathtaking (And I havd never noticed before but very Jack Kirby esque ),the FRogmen are creepy monsters and I actually find Rasputin a scarier villain in the comic then in the film
Overall good story,ton of fun

Halloweenathon :Hour of the Wolf
Tumblr media
So I was exploring the Arthouse horror playlist on the Criterion channel and decided to check out this film by Ingmar Bergman and...Hoo boy
In this 1968 film Alma Borg (Liv Ullmann) recounts the events that lead to the disappearance of her husband Johan (Max Von Sydow )
I dunno who needs to hear this but here I go:One can like a movie and not get it ,you dont have to be able to fully understand a film to like it.....I say this cause I think this is a good movie even if I dont understand all of it
The horror of the movie for me comes from how uneasy and uncomfortable it is .Oh you have some standard horror imagery (Woman putting her eyes into a glass and a man walking up the wall and onto the cieling stand out ) but the most freaky scene for me was a dinner party scene, where there was so many conversations and the way the camera moved I felt unnerved .ITs an affecting mood piece
If you are into a more abstract form of horror I reccomend this film

Halloweenathon The Funhouse
Tumblr media
Another Tobe Hooper film and it might be the most Tobbe Hooperist film I have ever seen
in this 1981 film  Amy (Elizabeth Berridge ),Buzz (Cooper Huckabee),Liz(Largo Woodruff), and Richie(Miles Chapin) are four teens on a double date who visit the carnival and decide to spend a night at the funhouse only to witness a murder and be pursued by the carnival barker Conrad (Kevin Conway ) and his mutated son Gunther (Wayne Doba)
So I really enjoyed this movie ,and while not my favorite Hooper film,I think this is the one I would reccomend if one wanted to know what Hoopers style is ,in that it is bonkers
I like the weird vibe of the first half just wandering around the carnival seeing weird things and characracters (Including a cameo by the Phantom of the Paradise himself William Finley as the magecian ).Kevin COnway is fun playing not only the villainous Conrad who is used to covering up his sons murders as well as playing two other barkers .The 4 main characters are all good, just some teens looking for a good time, they arent super memorable but they are solid
Now this isnt a slasher it is actually more of a monster movie ,with a memorable villain in the mutated Gunther ,whose design was created by the great Rick Baker ,though he spends most of the movie in a FRankenstein monster costume (Theres are actually a few Frankenstein refrences in the film which seems to be more of judt homage on Tobe Hoopers part cause the film was done by universal and he liked Frankenstein )
SO far this might be my fave film I have seen of the month

Halloweenathon :The Dark Half
Tumblr media
We have another Sthephen King adaptation this one directed by legendary filmmaker George A Romero
In this 1993 film author Thad Beaumont (Timothy Hutton ) decides to retire his pen name,George Stark, which he uses to write darker low brow books.....George however isnt going to die without a fight
George Romero is one of the great horror directors ,and has been attatched to or involved with amy a King project, most notably Creepshow.I will say of the King films I have seen this feels the most King:Odd characters ,weird lines and a supernatural element that doesnt make a whole lotta sense .My main issue with the film is it feels like the orgin for George is way to complicated:Hes an evil double of THad who represents the darker side of Thad who has been given physical form ,but hes not exactly a split personality because he has taken over the remains of Thas absorbed twin, but he isnt the twin, the twin is a vessell--and its just complicasted when it coulda been simplified and that and the abrupt ending are my big issues with the film
George Romero gives the film a great sense fof style and color ,I like the fun characters (Specifically Julie Harris as a friend of Thads, and Royal Dano in his last role as a grave digger),Michael Rooker is recurring King character Sheriff Pangborn and Rooker is always excellent .
The star of the film really is the duel performance of Tomthy Hutton as both the writer hero Thad and the murderous villain George .I applaud how diffrent both characters feel
It aint perfect but I hads a fun time

Halloweenathon :Jekyll and Hyde
Tumblr media
TOday we look at a TV movie based on a classic horror tale
In this 1990 TV movie Sara Crawford (Cheryl Ladd) relives past hardships as she recounts to John Utterson (Ronald Pickup) the events leading to the death of Dr Henry Jekyll (Michael Caine) and the invovement of a certain Mr Hyde
.....So Jekyll and Hyde is not a fave horror monster of mine .at least in film,as I have seen several adaptations and they rarely stick the landing for me .I think this is a contender for favorite (Tied with the John Barrymore film )
Whats interesting about this film is the Jekyll and Hyde part isnt the focus ,but more uses the story to talk about life in Victorian .I like the vibe and all the supporting characters including DAvid SChofield asa nosey reporter ,Lionel Jeffries as Jekylls father, and the great Joss Ackland as the antagonistic Dr Lanely
Michael Caine shines as Dr Jekyll, with some really solid scenes and he is also fairly menacing as Hyde ,and Cheryl Ladd has some great chemistry with him.
If I have an issue with the film the main problem was the design of Hyde, where he looks like a lumpy potato.AS good as Caine is,it was hard to take Hyde seriously .ALso the final reveal is....rather silly
I enjoyed this film a lot

Halloweenathon : Murders In the Zoo
Tumblr media
SO the Criterion Channel has a Precode Horror playlist here in 2023 .Most of the films on the playlist I had seen ,but this one stood out cause I had never heard of it ......And turns out it is really good
In this 1933 film Eric Gorman(Lionel Atwil) is a wealthy big game hunter/zooologist who happens to be extremely posessive of his wife Evelyn(Kathleen Burke),setting up a publicity dinner at the zoo he works at ,to plan a murder
Man you can tell its pre code because this movie opens with a man getting his MOUTH SEWN SHUT ! I bring this up to say this movie can get kind of grizzly,I love that .DEaths arent gory but they are harrowing for a 30's film.I will say the highlight of the film is underrated Horror actor Lionel Atwill (Who was in a bunch of classic horror films like Mystery of the Wax Museum and Son of Frankenstein ),who is a talent even if he isnt remembered as highly as his contempraries Lugosi and Karloff .He really nails the mix of refined gentleman and jealous deranged villain .Supporting cast is solid (Highlight being Charles Ruggles as arecovering alcoholic publicity man who provides the films comic relief ) and there are some really good set pieces
Now being the 30's I dont know how well treated the animals were(The scene where animals ar attacking each other seemed a little too real ) so keep that in mind when watching and will confess I kept getting the two main couples in this (Villains wife and her lover anjd the heroic couple ) kind of confused, even though one of the heroes is Randolf SCott
youtube
....Not a real fan of him but wanted to use that refrence
Overaall I love this movie ,thought it was interesting and fun

Halloweenathon X The Man With the X Ray Eyes
Tumblr media
TOday we look at a Roger Corman film, possibly one of his best,X The Man With The X Ray Eyes
In this 1963 film Dr James Xavier (Ray Milland),experiments with a drug to expand his vision beyond human capability but perhaps he is seeing to far
This is an odd film cause it starts out as a sci fi cautionary tale. Its uses its sci fi elements well with exploring ways to use the X Ray eyes (EVen a comedic scene involving a dance party where he sees everyone as naked ) ....By the end it is PURE horror with some almost lovecraftian elements .I'm gonna be honest folks the ending is so horrifying I think it makes it worth a watch.Plus you get a surprisingly good villainous performance by comedian Don Rickles .The person who sells the movie however is Oscar winner Ray Milland who sells the ego, addiction, loneliness and above all the terror
OVerall might be my fave Roger Corman movie
