As if I didn't have enough hobbys I found a new love - bookbinding! In theory it's perfectly paceable - each of these books took over a week to make, where an able bodied person would be able to do it in less than one evening. But all these little steps led to a tangible object! I used papers I marbled myself for these books.
I've now discovered the rabbithole that's fanbinding and I've gotten permission from various authors to bind their fics - can't wait!!!!

This binding I had finished for a couples month ago. The binding follow French style "passé carton", but the text block was punched holes (not sawing), sewing on tape and connect to the boards, hard spine smooth sanding as well. Of course, this binding still have ton of points need to be improve, fine binding, especially French style was not easy for the self taught bookbinder like me. The most love thing I am happy with that is having a good sharp of endcaps and the cover can open well. Thank for my dear friends @louise.bescond @markkirchner.bookbinder and @huhubookbinder about all your help during my learning. This time to back to see my old binding and prepare for some improment binding. I would try to make it as perfect as possible. #finebinding #bookbinding #reliurelivre #reliure #buckbiden #bookbinder #bookbindery #bindery #leatherboundbinder #leatherwork #bookstagram #handbookbinding #handbookbinder #handbookbindery #endbands #endpaper #passécarton #frenchbinding https://www.instagram.com/p/CgYNuxsJ3QJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

WIP Dr. Oetkers Schulkochbuch
Part II
On this one I used a slightly bigger needle and as a result the holes left from sewing were wider than I liked. There’s an easy way to fix them a bit though (if I’d work coptic books I’d use it way more often I guess). With the holes being punched from the inside out, the pushed away paper bulges always on the outside (as can be seen in the first 2 pictures)

More glue can get through those holes and into the book block where it can leave knobs and glue the pages a bit together on the inside of a signatures. In my experience this is rarely an issue in handbookbinding, but I felt better with a bit precaution. So I simply be pushed the paper bulges back with a bone folder to cover the holes a bit.

As an extra this cookbook has, partially, coloured plates to show different foods or decoration techniques. They come on extra sheets that I get now to add somehow. In the original book those single sheets were no trouble at all. The whole book was stapled into a block as was not uncommon for books in that time. For sewing the signatures I went for tipping the sheets with the plates in by using a thin stripe of glue to fix them on the following signature rather than sewing each of those single sheets. I went for that option to put less strain on the paper. With usually 3+ sheets forming a signature the thread is not too likely to tear through the paper when sewing, one single sheet is a different story though. When I glue sheets in this way I don’t glue the flush to the fold, but leave a tiny bit of space so I won’t damage them when punching the holes for sewing.

It is rounding time. The book after sewing, gluing will be rounded, prepare for backing step. This step is not hard, but must be careful, the final sharp of book spine depend on how much we rounding the spine. The hammer in photo is London Pattern Hammer, it is very popular in bookbinding world, especially English binding. #bookbinding #bindery #bookbindery #roundingspine #rounding #roundinghammer #reliure #reliuredart #finebinding #bookstagram #bookart #handbookbinding #bookbindingtool #hammer #londonpatternhammer (at Hồ Chí Minh City) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChNOQ-CPnyh/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
