The sun is starting to warm you up a little. It’s been hours since you felt your toes. Woochul wanted to start the day early and get plenty of practice in. You’re not entirely sure why you had to be here, except of course to hold his bags and hand him specific items as needed. The token peon.

This is not your idea of a good time.

The boat is small, more of a canoe. The tackle box, a paper bag with the slimy beings within, and spare poles are piled up around your feet. Woochul’s feet, of course, are clear of clutter. If it wasn’t for the fact that you are stuck in the middle of the lake, you would have left by now.

And because of that smile. It’s infectious.

He’s flashing it now. The soft bobbing of the water from the breeze ruffling up a few strands of brown hair as he holds out his hand. You place your hand in his, returning his smile.

“Uh. What are you doing?”

“Huh?”

“I need more bait.” He tosses your hand aside, pointing to the paper bag by your ankle. “Quickly.”

If you weren’t in the middle of the lake... You don’t care if it is his birthday. Who takes someone out to a lake to fish at 4:30 in the morning?

“Thanks,” he says with that contagious grin. “You are the only person I would want to do this with.”

Fishing isn’t that bad. Not on a nice day like this.
