POLITICAL OVERTONES, no.4. I guess if your first song is a polite, sort of passive-aggressive protest anthem and your third song is “Masters of War” where you actively and explicitly and detailed-ly wish literal death to the military industrial complex and you end the first side with a prediction of apocalypse (rain not fire), well, the politics aren’t “overtones.” But like the title says, he wheels freely all over the place with love-me-please and love-is-over and love-would-be-fun songs and his dreamin’ and talkin’ stuff that would make any Greenwich Villager chuckle... I think it’s interesting to compare the through line of the dark dream on this album’s second side to “I Dreamed I Saw St. Augustine” on John Wesley Harding, sort of the same dream but coming after his lyrical abstractions of Blonde on Blonde and Highway 61 Revisited were behind; either way he’s given to disturbed dreaming, I guess. We all agree this cover is one of the great covers of the sixties, too, I assume.
