Meet our 2021 festival artists Natalie Surina Natalie is a builder of historical-Irish and also medieval-European harps, based in the wilds of Connemara in the west of Ireland. She is meticulous about researching and rediscovering old Irish harp-building techniques, which she puts to use in her own harp making. Hang out with her in her own workshop, at her festival workshop! The Historical Harp Society of Ireland will be presenting a Harpmakers' Day on Saturday 17th August 2019 during Scoil na gCláirseach—Festival of Early Irish Harp in Kilkenny, Ireland. We extend a warm invitation to harp makers to come and join us and to exhibit copies of the old Irish harps that day. Anyone who would like to exhibit – and offer harps for sale – but who cannot be there in person is welcome to send either instruments or publicity materials. Secondhand copies of the old Irish harps may also be displayed and offered for sale. Fledgling instrument builders are also very welcome to attend in order to learn more about the subject of building early Irish harps. The harp makers’ exhibition is scheduled to run all day, principally during the breaks between other events: 10.30-11.00 a.m., 12:30-1.30, 3.00-3.30, and 4.30-5.00 p.m. Events of special interest to builders that day will include Simon Chadwick's hands-on workshop, 'Replica harps and portraits of harpers as a source for performance practice', and Dr. Karen Loomis's Illustrated talk 'Evolution of the Irish Harp’. We have put together this day specifically with harp builders in mind: to create a new opportunity for exchange between organologists, builders and players, and we hope that you will find this of value and of interest. In this spirit, we will not be charging builders any fees to exhibit or to attend the workshop or talk. We will be really delighted if you are able to come along: to attend the events we will offer; to engage in discussion, to learn from us or to teach us, and to show off your work.
