Still Mornings

Haruka wakes up too early on his birthday but his family, Seiko and his daughter are right there with him so it’s OK.

In case you haven’t noticed yet, I am writing an ‘early morning’ kind of thing series for characters on their birthdays. I started with Chiharu. 

Um...warnings: i think it’s a good idea to point out that there’s an oc in the story - their adopted seven year old daughter, Shun.

“Mom! Dad!” Haruka almost threw his daughter off his stomach by accident when she jumped on it. He cracked one eye open in groggy pain and saw the excited girl with short red hair look at him. She was perched on top of his chest. The sun was barely peeking through the curtains and Haruka knew it was far too early for him to be up on an off day. Seiko mumbled something in her sleep and curled up into his side and Haruka considered just drifting off to sleep again. His family was in his arms and it was an off day. They could just cuddle and go to sleep. His eyelids slowly started to droop and then Shun had grabbed two fistfulls of his shirt and yanked. “Dad!” Shun said loudly again.

“Ah, yes, Shun…” Haruka groaned. “Good morning. You’re up terribly early. How about we go back to sle-”

“Happy Birthday, Dad!” Shun shouted. Seiko started and sat up, hitting Haruka in the face by accident.

“Ah! I woke up late!” Seiko cried out. “Shun! Instead of waking up your dad first, you should have woken me up!”

“But Dad likes waking up next to you,” Shun said matter-of-factly. Haruka wanted to put the pillow over his head. It was too much and he had just woken up. He tried to tune out the sound of Seiko and Shun having a weird toddler level mother-child argument and then there were two kisses on his face. One on his forehead and one on his cheek. His eyes flew open. Shun had kissed his cheek and Seiko had kissed his forehead.

“Happy Birthday, Haruka.” Seiko smiled at him and Shun grinned back equally happy. Haruka’s stomach did funny things and then he sighed heavily, braced a hand against Shun’s back so she wouldn’t slide off of him and he sat up. He wrapped one arm around Seiko and pulled her close.

“Thank you and good morning,” Haruka murmured.

“I’m going to go start the blueberry waffles! You and mom can kiss and wake up!” Shun said with the cheekiness of a seven year old and dashed off. Haruka honestly wondered if raising her to be intelligent and open minded right away was a good idea. He did it mostly for Seiko’s sake and for Shun’s sake as well so that she would never feel awkward in her own house and skin should she undergo an identity change. But this was too much. Well...at least it wasn’t as bad as Kichi and Nobu’s five year old girl who chanted ‘kiss kiss’ at any couple she thought looked cute together. Maybe all the disney movies were a bad idea.

“Come on, Haruka, you can’t just let your daughter make you breakfast. Do you want to help or are you in the mood to have me make you breakfast?” Seiko asked him, starting to climb out of bed. Haruka instinctively wrapped his arms around her waist, still feeling sleepy. “Haruka,” Seiko said his name sternly. “I can’t leave Shun in the kitchen all alone, genius at making breakfast waffles or not.” Haruka whined but slowly let go of her, hands settling at her waist as he climbed out of bed as well. He stared at her shorts for a moment before he hooked a finger into the elastic and pulled it back. Seiko slapped his hand away. “Haruka!”

“Dad! Hurry up!” Shun shouted from the kitchen as if in response to Seiko’s cry of outrage. Seiko glared at him.

“Behave yourself,” she said and then marched out of the room. “Shun, how are the waffles coming?” Haruka grinned, suddenly aware that it was his birthday and he could use that to his advantage.

“Seiko, Yuiko neechan is coming over, will you please wear that dress for me today?” Haruka asked, using his best puppy voice.

“Absolutely not!” Seiko scoffed.

“Dad! What should I wear?” Shun asked.

“Hm...how about that dress with purple flowers we bought at the new mall?” Haruka suggested. Both Seiko and Shun brightened up at the idea and Haruka resolved to get Seiko to wear the dress he had in mind. He had all morning with his family and it was filling his chest up with warmth.

“Dad, I’m done with your waffles! Mom, can you get dad’s plate? I’ll make it look nice!” Shun said excitedly.
