Sabrina The Teenage Witch: Something Wicked #1 Archie Comics 2020 Written by Kelly Thompson Illustrated by Veronica & Andy Fish Lettered by Jack Morelli    PREVIOUSLY IN THE TOWN OF GREENDALE…    Teen witch Sabrina Spellman’s start at her new school, Greendale High, was far from ordinary... we're talking budding romances, spells gone awry, and magical beasts running amok! After thinking the worst of it was discovering that resident mean girl Radka Ransom and her brother Ren were some sort of shape-shifting wendigo and the shy nerd, Allen, from her chemistry class was a demon dragon beast, Sabrina’s aunts Hilda and Zelda ventured into the woods to handle some unspoken magical business—and never returned! That is, until Sabrina and her former-warlock-turned-cat Salem came to their rescue, fighting off all the humans-turned-beasts and catching the eye of head witch Della in the process. Things are finally starting to settle down—but a few questions still remain: who does Sabrina truly like better: bad boy with a heart of gold Ren, or kind jock with the good hair Harvey Kinkle? And what is she going to do now that Radka knows her witch secret?    I have said this before but it bears repeating, the 4-6 issue arc runs instead of a full on monthly series if handled the way this is then that’s the better way to go.  We know further arcs will be on the horizon, there’s a smaller chance for delays and it gives us something to look forward to and I love that this picks up where the last left off and Sabrina is still trying to find a solution for Radka.  The continuity we’re looking for is here so what else do we need?  Also I very much like the opening here, not what happens that would be monstrous, but it immediately catches the readers’ eye, attention and engages them from the get-go.    I am a huge fan of the way that this is being told.  The way that we see the story & plot development through the sequence of events and how they unfold as well as how the reader learns information moves this forward beautifully.  The characterisation we see is brilliantly rendered throughout the issue and whether it’s in the woods, in school or at home we see how a normal teenage girl is going to react to feeling so overwhelmed.  The pacing here is excellent and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see how everything works together to create the books ebb & flow.    The interiors here are really rather well rendered.  I like how the mood, tone and feel changes depending on what part of the story we are in.  How we see the linework through its varying weights being utilised to bring out the attention to detail is beautifully done.  While we all know I am a huge proponent of seeing backgrounds being utilised and yes I would like to see more within these pages but I will admit that what we see is fabulous!  I like how we see the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope of the story.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show such a great eye for storytelling.  The colour work also is beautifully rendered.  I love the way the sky in the backgrounds with those colour choices and how we see the hues and tones have this almost calming effect.  How we see the colour work really is beautifully done and how they make the reader feel. ​    Sabrina is one of the most intriguing and versatile character to have come out of Archie and this is one the perfect examples why.  Her dual life has always been complicated though less so in the past so to see her having some problems melding the two is what makes her so relatable to, in the larger spectrum.
