our lady knows the path of the penitent well; for did she not walk that long path behind the prophet, so that we could follow in their footsteps? she knows where this path ends: down upon your knees, begging to an uncaring god, a cruel god -- but our lady knows the prophet is not thus; just a man in a suit and tie. for false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray. ( matthew, 24:24 ). they had fed jezebel to the dogs for following a false god, what did fate have in store for columbia’s own mother of sorrows? what did god envision for all of columbia? hell, she thinks. brimstone and fire. a reckoning.
‘ i trust your meeting with our father went as well as it could, given the... circumstances of your situation. ’ comes her soothsayer’s voice. our lady prides herself on being a most genteel hostess; for is the hearth and home not a cornerstone of columbia? and if our lady’s is cold, then what says that for the city? her hands fidget, flex - she can’t stay still. not anymore. moves like she wants to rip her skin off and she thinks, in this moment, she could. oh god, oh god. why are they always trying to turn me into a saint? i want to live.

hattie gerst’s eyes are shining with tears that will, of course, fall. she looks as though she has not stopped crying; and our lady knows the prophet has never been moved by the weeping of women. at least, our lady has never known him to be moved by anything, save his own vanity. in this moment, our lady wishes they could switch places: thinks that one day, she will be a widow -- and perhaps they will call her the merry widow, for our lady has shed enough tears to form an ocean. their eyes meet, and she is suddenly all too aware of the painful silence that surrounds them. she clears her throat. so, this was to be their introduction. sweet sinner, science is not your realm: you need not concern yourself with it. all these doors, locked and barred to her. now, one slowly swings open. ‘ how - how have you been faring, missus gerst? they say that pain makes us stronger, but it is often too great a burden to bear alone. ’

Samuel, when the spells of anger come, I want you to play this recording and remember that I am the proudest woman in Columbia to have been your wife. They said your soul was choked by the fumes in that metal box, but this I do not believe. And we shall meet again, on that eternal shore -- both of us whole and smiling. I love you. I love you. I love you.

Samuel always thought that the pew on Sunday went hand in hand with the desk on Monday. “Science is the slow revelation of God’s blueprint.” After two years in the Lamb’s tower on Monument Island, he took ill with cancer of the stomach. I prayed to the Prophet, and the Prophet delivered unto us a miracle through his servant, Fink. I do not know if I will ever get used to a husband bound in a skeleton of metal, but... better a Handyman than a dead one.
