You know I LOVE cocky little shit Ava so much but it’s also so sweet and heartbreaking seeing shy Ava. I think one of the first times you see it is in episode 6 of s1, and it’s so cute but also so sad, coz of course she’s shy she was abandoned and abused for 12 horrifically lonely years!!! It just so cute but gut wrenching to watch the girl with so much love for the world hide away from it, and it’s something you do so well, bringing all these sides to Ava!! It’s phenomenal.

there's a moment in the third episode, towards the end, where ava and mary have a small interaction

mary tells ava her name is shotgun mary and ava asks what that means and mary says 'cause i drink a lot' and they share these looks

and you can tell that that tiny interaction means SO MUCH to ava

because it's silly and simple and her curiosity wasn't belittled or used against her like it probably had been for years and she has this shy little smile, like she's afraid if she says anything else she'll ruin it and there are tiny moments like this sprinkled throughout the early part of the first season where you're reminded that ava has no idea how to live in the world and literally everything she's doing, she's doing for the first time in 12 years and so to be given anything soft like this sits with her and she carries it with her and even when she's scared and trying to get away, these little things, like that soft moment with bea in the hall after superion made her cry - those are what made her come back

because all she wants is to not be alone and to have people love her and care about her and so the smallest kindnesses stay with her forever
