I Can Still Do It

Quote. "A champion shows who he is by what he does when he gets tested. When a person gets up and says: 'I can still do it'. He's a champion." - Evander Holyfield.

This quote resonated for me for this post because I have witnessed a few people overcoming adversity lately and I have drawn inspiration from it.  Whether boxing, cancer, life.. keep getting up, and keeping doing it.  And by the way more "she's" than "he's" served as the motivation for this one.

Training. Training continues to evolve and I have added in workouts and   sparring at @Coreboxtrainingcenter to go along with regular workouts at @CrushitFit Between the two, it feels like all the parts and people are in place. I just have to execute. 

I have about 12lbs to lose to get to my fighting weight of 200. These will be the toughest 12 for sure and will require a focus on losing the weight that I did not have to consider before- when I was heavy enough the weight fell off with a good diet and exercise. I guess that is a benefit of being overweight..

My opponent for the fight is Matt Malatesta.  He is formidable and I assume he will be more than ready to go on May 17th.  He will also be a fellow Cohasset resident and we have a few common motivations for why we are doing @Haymakers4Hope that I am sure you will learn more about.

Culture.  I have been watching fights, movies, and documentaries when I have the rare opportunity.  Legendary Nights: The Story of Ward-Gotti was particularly interesting. A part of boxing- one of the best parts to me- is the respect that opponents get for one another that is forged in their fights.

Ward and Gotti had three fights you would not believe if they were in a movie. My wife watched part and hoped it was movie.. They hugged before their 30th and final round (full 10 rounds each fight) and then become close friends before Gotti's tragic and early death. They were more similar than different, as most people are, if you take a moment (or 30 rounds) to notice..

The Whole Point.  Was very lucky to attend the Susan Komen Catwalk For The  Cure event in Boston this past week. It would be a cool charity event just with the space in the Boston Design Center and the fact that it is fashion show. 

Add in that many of the models are survivors and/or battling breast cancer and you are totally blown away (you should be anyway).  There was a model who tossed her wig right into the crowd to defiantly show her bald head- that is more badass than anything I have seen in the boxing ring yet.  When I posted on Instagram how the event inspired me, a couple participants thanked me for coming- like they did not do more for everyone in the audience than vice versa..

They have a standing invite to come be my guests at Haymakers cause whether it is a boxing ring, a catwalk, or even your hair- get up and say I can still do it.

Week 1 of #teambackbayboxing Fight Camp finished up with another 12 round sparring session for both fighters. We finally had the luxury of getting most of our sparring team into the gym at the same time to work our fighters over in our non-stop, round-robin session. The names and details of our sparring team and session will remain confidential until after #fightnight, then we'll show you love. You already know who you are so thank you! What happens in fight camp stays in fight camp! Every punch landed in sparring is one we'll see coming fight night!
