@esper-aroon has enabled me, so here let me scream at y'all about The Imperial Uncle.
Tumblr media
Okay, so I recently read The Imperial Uncle (Huang Shu) by Da Feng Gua Guo from Peach Flower House and I really loved it??? It's first person pov, mlm, about the Emperor's uncle Jing Chengjun, who is mistrusted by everyone simply because of who his parents were and his position, and so he's basically given up on trying to convince people that he's actually a nice, decent person without ulterior motives. He's super trapped by his position, and there's so much he can't say and do, and he's also a hopeless romantic, like, from his own mouth all he really wants is to sleep beside and wake up next to someone who actually gives a shit about him, and even that is basically out of reach in his life. Like, the book starts with his wife (who he has never once had sex with) storming into a meeting he's having and announcing he's a cuckold and she's pregnant.
But also, this poor bastard really thinks he knows what's going on and his very smart. Very unreliable narrator. He's actually kinda a hilarious, impulsive himbo. But the TL:DR is that his loneliness and isolation and the extent to which he's politically trapped routinely lead him to make absolutely terrible decisions.
E. Danglar's translation is absolutely gorgeous, too, and... idk, if you love political plots, melodramatic idiot main characters, a dose of pining, and a slow burn that eventually pays off, come take a look??? (some people think it's a love triangle??? idk, I never really got that vibe, I never felt it was really in doubt which of the two potential dudes he'd end up with, but maybe I only feel that way because I got it right, lmao).
Anyway, I can't stop thinking about how these two idiots end up finally finding each other and getting together, and I have an entire AU in my head (a modern corporate one) and part of another (canon divergent from like a decade before the book starts), and I just want people to love this book as much as I did and scream with me about it.

INGO AND SPICE MANWHORING IT AROUND HISUI??
WAIT.
No i has a sad thought.
Zoroarks can make themselves look human in illusions. What if ingo dies in his sleep, wakes up, freaks out and goes "aaaaa bad spice dream. Wake up" and like Nopes out of it so hard he illusions himself back to human form and the body away. So everything Looks fine. And ingo thinks it was a dream
But spice, who sleeps curled around ingo, sees it all. and spice knows.
and if it had been a year before, maybe even a month before, he'd be so happy to torment ingo with this, so happy to finally have a way to hurt him.
But he looks at his trainer's corpse and sees the same signs on his body, hypothermia. Ingo died in a cave in the winter because the only thing he had to keep him warm was the cold fur of a dead zoroark who couldn't be warm enough.
And of course, that's how every hisuian zoroark is born.
And ingo has been kind to him. And ingo has been warm. And ingo is so so desperate to get back to his family, his family who could keep him fed and warm and alive, unlike spice, who barely managed the first of those things.
So he gives ingo back his coat and hat and tells him he dropped them, and when ingo is asleep he takes the body away and buries it where nobody will find it. And nobody ever knows.
And he tries his best to make sure nothing breaks the illusion. If someone comes when he sleeps, spice just says ingo's out, the other zoroark here is just a relative. If someone tries to hurt ingo, he gets in the way. It's all he can do for the man.
Ingo forgets about the dream. Spice never forgets the grave.

A Strain sends Saru back in time. Back into the past of like maybe his 12 year old body. Maybe just before meeting Yata. He remembers everything though that is to come... but now has to deal with seeing Niki again.
Would you say he would far enough to possibly stab Niki if the man came in and began his usual taunts? Would that alter the future at all? Change things?
Would he have his powers though? Imagine Fushimi wanting to stab Niki and then realizing that he’s just back to being a weak kid and Niki can easily overpower him, and hating that even after all this time there’s nothing he can do against that person. Like imagine he gets hit by a Strain and wakes up in his bed at his old house. I imagine he just freezes the moment he opens his eyes as he realizes where he is, all the old memories rushing back and wondering if he’s been like trapped in a terrible memory or something. Then he notices that he’s wearing pajamas and his hair is back to the old style. He gets up and finds a mirror and checks his PDA, realizing that he’s in the past and his body looks like he’s a middle schooler again. Imagine that despite himself his first thought is that he needs to find Misaki and then he clicks his tongue quietly, because he hasn’t met Misaki yet, right now Misaki is just some student at his school that he’s never talked to.
As Fushimi’s considering his options he hears the door slam and Niki’s voice floats up to him all sing-song, wondering where his little monkey is. Fushimi’s body reacts on instinct, trying to pull a knife from his sleeves and summon any power, be it red or blue — and nothing happens, because middle school Fushimi had no powers and didn’t carry knives in his sleeves. He can hear Niki ascending the stairs though and Fushimi is just sitting there trying to figure out how to get out of this, like does he just go out the window and hope he’s not followed. He ends up going for it, just jumping for a tree and climbing down and making a run for it, hearing Niki’s laughter behind him because Niki is so amused that his son decided to play tag with him. Fushimi doesn’t stop until he’s well away from that house and imagine he even finds himself by S4 headquarters, like his body just led him there and when he realizes where he’s run to he clicks his tongue in irritation.
Fushimi has no idea if this is really the past and if what he does will affect anything in the future and if there’s a way to get back to his time safely. He doesn’t intend to spend the next few years of his life running from Niki though and imagine he uses all the money he’s got on him to buy some knives from whatever shady dealer let him buy them in the first place after he joined Homra and he gets to making a new knife harness. As he’s doing this he realizes from the date that it’s almost the day he meets Yata and imagine him pausing, fingers twitching slightly towards his collar even though there’s no longer a burn mark there. He thinks maybe he should skip school that day — but then he decides no, just in case after all, telling himself that it’s best not to upset the timeline and that’s the only reason why he's suddenly afraid of a world where he never meets Yata.
And even though he just told himself that he shouldn’t upset the timeline when he goes back to the house he has a knife in hand as he carefully enters, wary of traps. It seems like no one’s there and he momentarily relaxes, which of course is when Niki pops out of nowhere and smacks his back all ‘you’re it!’. Fushimi immediately draws a knife this time, telling Niki to leave him alone. Niki just laughs though, wondering who let his little monkey play with sharp objects. He figures he should just take those away so Fushimi doesn’t hurt himself, Fushimi says Niki’s the only one who will get hurt. Niki laughs again and Fushimi feints towards him, trying to scare him away, but Niki just easily grabs his arm. He pulls the knife from Fushimi’s fingers and wonders who’s been teaching his monkey bad habits, and for a single terrifying moment Fushimi wonders if Niki’s going to use the knife on him. Niki lets him go though and suggests they play a knife throwing game, and Fushimi bites his tongue as he makes a break for his room, slamming the door and locking it. Imagine him sitting there as Niki laughs outside, quietly cursing himself because even after everything he still can’t defeat Niki, he’s still too weak to do anything at all, and no wonder Misaki left in the end.

What the fuck was that chapter!?!?!?!
I've never wanted to enter a fictional world THIS MUCH before!! Why must ALL the adults in this damn story be so disgusting!!! I shall gladly become a mass murderer if I got a chance to enter the world of weak hero. And also give Donald hugs and kisses and head pats and tell him how amazing he is 😭
I don't wanna hear anyone saying that violence wasn't the only solution Donald had 😤
In fact I'm GLAD that he chose to beat all of his bullies up!! Everyone from his backstory better be dead in the present (but the only person who i don't wish to be dead, his mom, is probably the only one who died😭).
Although he did end up going too far as he'd predicted. It starts small and then becomes too big and I HATE that the FIRST ever friend Donald made was KINGSLEY!?!?!?!?
Okay, I might be a bit too hard on Kingsley but FUCK IT!! Donald deserved better!!

it makes me SO sad that it’s hard to go through Samwise’s tags or find people for whom he is their favorite that don’t put down Frodo. I’m thankful that the number of those who truly understand him and love both him and who he struggles for is greater than it could be and has been in the past, but it’s still so heartbreaking to see, because I love Sam so dearly, and he’d never want this. It’s such a disrespect of Sam’s character to think that the only way to praise him is to undermine or insult Frodo. And it’s a disrespect to the narrative of Lord of the Rings as well. People constantly reference a cherry picked and out of context piece of a letter Tolkien wrote, desperately trying to claim that Sam is The Singular Hero of the story, when that wasn’t even remotely the context of the letter, yet its been used for years to undermine all the other characters of the series and erase the well rounded character Sam is to shave him into some one dimensional He-Man. Sam is undoubtedly one of the chief characters of the story, THE chief character of the story alongside Frodo. Without Sam the quest would not have been fulfilled. Yet Tolkien makes it clear that Sam could not have done Frodo’s job— especially not on his own. Just as the Ring broke down Frodo, it would have done for Sam— especially by the point of Mordor. That isn’t where Sam’s strength and value lies. It doesn’t lie in being the sacrifice. It lies in being the hope, the support, the utterly maddened loyalty and stubbornness and love that overcomes and strengthens. As I have come to say, Frodo carried the world, and Sam carried Frodo. People seem to think that as lesser, and I find that insulting. Would you find a friend that supported you in dark times lesser? Are they not your world in those moments? Do they not hold up the world for you yourself, as you struggle to carry the weight of it, and remind you that whatever suffering, you will never be abandoned or alone, even if both of you endure the fires of hell and no brightness shines through. It will not be alone. That is the beauty of Sam, and the people that treat that role as though it was not enough or that he should have had more on his plate show their lack of understanding of the very character they claim to praise.
#samwise gamgee#frodo baggins#I was just thinking this bc i realized I didn’t have as many Sam posts on my blog and I began to wonder why since he is one of my favorite#characters of all time#and then I remembered that I have learned to avoid diving directly into his tag without screening the poster first#because most of the content for Sam is just treating Frodo as a burden or useless or weak and Sam as though he had no weakness#and that always hurts because it’s such a disrespect and pity to two of the most wonderful characters ever written#to erase Sam’s struggles and faults and weakness is to reduce him and the very reason he is such an amazing person.#that Sam pushes through and becomes the hero he does despite his flaws and weakness is the very point#the fact that neither Frodo nor Sam could accomplish the quest without the other is the very point#putting down one over the other is such a gross simplification and misunderstanding of the text#and oh I am SO tired of the ‘Sam is the real hero Tolkien said so’ misinfo#I don’t know who started that whole thing but if I ever met them they would get a black eye or a lecture and maybe both#I’ve looked up that letter and it is not at all what people make it out to be.#the general group that spreads that shows they have zero critical thinking or reading comprehension or even media literacy.#it’s sad to see such a valuable story and lesson and narrative be bastardized and trampled on#I love Samwise so deeply. he is undoubtedly the reason Frodo makes it as far as he does#I am lucky to have friends like him. their worth cannot be measured.

THE LORE DAMP, THE LORE DAMP, THE LORE DAMP
"Mab was born when the world was young," The Thirstlewitch says. "In those days, we Folk were not so diminished as we are now, when there is so much iron. Our giants were as tall as mountains, our trolls like trees. And hags like myself held the power to bring all manner of things into being. Once a century, there is a convocation of hags, where we, the witches and enchanters, the smiths and makers, come together to hone our craft. It is not for outsiders, but Mab dared enter. She besought us for all that she wanted, the power to create. Not a mere glamour or little workings, but the great magic that we alone possessed. Most turned her away, but there was one who did not. That hag gave unto her the power to create from nothing. And in return, she was to take the hag's daughter and raise the witch child as her heir. At first, Mab did as she was bid. She took for herself the title of the Oak Queen, united the smaller Seelie Courts under her banner and began bestowing sentience on living things. Trees would lift their roots at her beckoning. Grass would scurry around, confusing her enemies. Faeries that had never existed before grew from her hands. And she raised three of the Shifting Isles of Elfhame from the sea."
Oak frowns at the dirt. "Has [ Cardan ] inherited some of her power ? Is that why he can - "
"Patience boy," Says the Thistlewitch. "Prince or not I will tell you in full or I will not tell you at all." [ . . . ] The Thistlewitch clears her throat and begins to speak again. "Mab called the child Mellith, which means 'mother's curse'. Not an auspicious beginning. And yet, it was only when her own daughter was born that she began to think of ways to weasel out of the bargain."
"Clovis, who ruled before my grandfather, Eldred."
The thistlewitch includes her head. "Indeed. In the end, it was a simple trick. Mab boasted again and again that she had discovered a means for Clovis to rule until the rumors finally found their way to the hag. Enraged, she swore to kill Clovis. And so, the hag crept up on where the child slept in the night and fell upon the girl she found there, only to discover she had murdered her own daughter. Mab had bested her. But the hag was able to put a final enchantment on her daughter's heart as it beat its last, for her daughter was a hag too and magic sang through her blood. The hag imbued the heart with the power of anihilation, of destruction, of unmaking. And she cursed Mab, so that piece of her child would be forever tied to the queen's power. She would have to keep the heart by her side for her magic to work. And should she not, it's power would unmake all that she created.
As for Mab, you know the rest. She made an alliance with one of the solitary fey and founded the Greenbriar line. A trickle of her power passed down to her grandson, Eldred, granting him fecundity when so much of Faerie is barren, and to the current High King, Cardan, who pulled a fourth isle from the deep. But a large amount of Mab's power stayed trapped with her remains, confined to her reliquary."
THIS IS HUGE THIS IS HUGE, THIS IS HUGE.

Your tags about charlie poisoning dee and frank compel me to mention that everytime someone mentions “dennis is a serial killer” near me I want to respond with “It’s more likely quick to anger and prone to rash decision making and holding grudges Charlie with his in depth knowledge of the sewer sytems and off the grid living would be a more prolific serial killer.”
NO STOP I . LITERALLY NO JOKE THAT IS MY EXACT SAME THOUGHT PROCESS LMAOOOOO-
CHARLIE BEING A SERIAL KILLER IS SO MUCH MORE FUN TO PLAY WITH. Like its ALL these little things in canon- HIS KNOWLEDGE OF THE SEWER SYSTEMS/LIVING OFF THE GRID YESSS, his comment about Jamie Nelson drowning being said with what seems like... fondness???, the "Bad Room", his writing The Nightman Cometh all as a scheme to try n pressure the Waitress into accepting his proposal by making a play that's like "see i had a bad childhood so u should just forgive me for everything! im not so bad after all!!", the fact that his job requires him to slip into a dissociative state in order to constantly mercilessly maim living creatures that he canonically resonates/identifies with, his ability to manipulate people with ease in general with his initial charm, the various parallels made between Charlie and characters like Patrick Bateman and Norman Bates and Buffalo Bill....,
like idc i think charlie as a serial killer would be Way more interesting... just think abt Charlie Catches a Leprechaun! he's a natural! and it's so hypnotizing watching the man work that u kinda GO ALONG WITH IT until the rest of the gang snaps us out of it,
also i do think Charlie Day is very smart writing-wise and he'd totally think up a character like this that is a subversion of that "harmless manchild" trope and turn it on its head by giving it a pretty grim ending... like . he's 100% smart enough and talented to pull smth like that off LOL
and i dont want ppl to take this as me trying to trash Charlie, cuz as I just said-- that is an extremely difficult kind of character to pull off!!!! Talk about a slow burn.... I am fuckin praising the man for his writing/performance of Charlie Kelly cuz he is so fucking convoluted and complex n im obsessed and a twist like this would just b the cherry on top

Daigo seems like the kind of guy to whisper “I thought you said you’d do anything for me?” and have Mine doing whatever he says and kissing the ground he walks on twice as hard
It’s also funny he simps super hard but can also criticize his actions when necessary. Balance
see i could see daigo mabes pulling that to poke/tease at mine's devotion- like at a point where they're Well Established as """"friends"""" and it's not an ACTUAL display of power if you know what i mean. just guys being dudes behavior.
but yeah that's what i really love so much about minedai and mine though !! like yes mine is utterly head over heels for daigo, but that doesn't put a cork in his work ethic or his goals and it doesn't distract him from priorities: it's a nice reminder that mine's character doesn't revolve solely around daigo (even if daigo is a solid portion of it) and he's not afraid to speak his mind, even if it's against people he wants to build rapport with
