Gotta go somewhere
So my mental health has been very poor for most of this year, and it is starting to take a worrying toll on me. There's a lot to talk about, obviously, and whatever it is probably lives here, at least in part, so I will refrain from review and go directly into whatever is next
My contemplation game is strong again, so that's something to be glad of, but it has been of necessity and not purely of love of "God" and the inner temple. I have had to be contemplative to keep myself together, and it burdens me that my spirituality could be rightly accused of transactionality lately. To which end: Psalm 31.
You see, I am panic attack-adjacent at all times these days. The buzzy language about this is to say that my nervous system is severely dysregulated. Fight-Flight-Freeze seems like a zipcode to me these days. And I require some things for this to resolve itself, none of which I have access to right now, and none of which might I be able to afford, even when granted limited access by becoming re-insured.
Please know that I know my privilege that I'm not dodging bombs right now, but my body/nervous system is absolutely convinced otherwise, and I am on the verge of system collapse. Like everything else, right? Letztlich ist alles metaphorisch.
It has become clearer to me lately that much of what I have been afraid of happening is queued up next, or has already happened to some degree. The US has been unmasked as a nation that is not a democracy in any sense that is important to it. The powers of the global "West" are sliding quickly into ultra right-wing ideologies. There is an actual genocide happening in which the US is involved, the atrocities of which are being mightily suppressed, while what we see — when we can bear to look — is already so monstrous as to be traumatizing simply to witness. Never mind what it is to undergo or survive.
I am not equipped to handle it, neither am I free to ignore it. It feels like it's tearing me apart. I understand that this is not about me. But I have no direct access to other perspectives or experiences, so I may only report these things.
I am studying again using books by Ms. Bourgeault, after a long season of lectures with her mentor, the late Fr. Thomas Keating, so I am bearing these things mystically as best I am able, which, at the moment, is not so well. My self-judgement is unnecessary because, spiritually speaking at least, this is a crucifixion moment, and one doesn't "succeed" or "fail" at that. One just dies.
This is distressing to me not only because it fucking sucks, but because one of metaphors insisted on by my consciousness is "performance." This means that what "spiritual" people call my "egoic self" wants a positive review of my inner torment. ("Did it move anyone? What did The Kansas City Sun say about the effectiveness of my writhing?") I do understand how counterproductive this is, but I verbalize it because to do otherwise is to resist it, and that is an act in which I have no interest, and frankly for which I have no energy left. The world is on fire, and I apparently want someone to notice my pain, for fuck's sake. It's not a great look, but it's what I look like right now, at least in some contexts.
I had another one of those 13-hour days yesterday, so I'm not doing anything important today. I don't have to take an "official" mental health day, because I don't report to anyone on Fridays, but I really need to allow myself to breathe into whatever refuge I can find for myself.
The class yesterday was hard. I'm still prone to COVID-fatigue on top of this hyper vigilance machine I apparently carry around with me, which itself takes a lot of fuel to run.
Thank you if you read any of this. I'm going to go and do the best I can by myself, which starts with taking my medicine, which I can do right off today. Thank Goddess I don't have to "raw dog" this whole day with only the brain chemistry I was born with, or have since developed.

Walmart is pushing ahead with its in-store health clinics and said Thursday it plans to open 28 more including 18 in Texas’ two largest metro areas.
Dallas-Fort Worth will get 10 Walmart Health clinics in 2024 and eight are planned for the Houston area also next year. Six will open in Phoenix and four in Kansas City, Missouri.
Walmart hasn’t yet said which stores will get the new clinics, but soon it plans to begin recruiting for 300 health care jobs in D-FW and 240 in Houston.
Walmart, Walgreens and CVS have all been moving into the patient care business in recent years by partnering with other companies and making acquisitions. Amazon closed its deal in February to buy primary care provide One Medical, which has opened three free-standing clinics in Dallas. VillageMD, which is majority owned by Walgreens, has opened dozens of clinics in D-FW, many in areas where healthcare facilities are scarce. Store pharmacies have been key links in dispensing all kinds of vaccinations over the years, including since the pandemic started, and now retailers want more of the primary and urgent care business.
“Everyone is doing their own thing, but for us, we’ve got a lot of stores in Texas and a lot of associates in Texas and a lot of customers in Texas and they trust us,” said Dr. David Carmouche, senior vice president at Walmart Health. “We think they want affordable basic health care from us.”
Walmart has 176,000 employees in Texas and operates 592 Walmart, Neighborhood Markets and Sam’s Clubs.
The largest U.S. retailer formed its Walmart Health division in 2019 after trying smaller primary care clinics in about 1,500 square feet of store space. Four of those are in Texas at Walmarts in Garland, Royse City, Tyler and Palestine and they have been rebranded as Walmart Health. Those facilities opened in 2014 as the retailer was exploring the idea of patient care in stores.
Walmart Health clinics offer both primary and urgent care services and average about 5,750 square feet. On-site labs, X-ray and EKG machines and treatment for behavioral health, dental, hearing and other services are part of each location.
So far locations are in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia and Florida and Walmart said it expects to have 75 operating in the U.S. by the end of 2024.
Walmart Health clinics take insurance but also list prices for people who don’t. Sick or injury visits are $100, annual check-up for children is $90, a Lipid panel lab test is $29 and a pap smear is $50 to $70.
Price transparency is part of the program, Dr. Carmouche said. Dental crowns are priced at $750 and root canals are $600 to $850.
Walmart’s own employees are a key population using the facilities, he said. “Our general philosophy is that we want to keep health care affordable. Where we can pass along value to consumers we will, and we’ll price responsibly so that we can continue to grow new centers.”

Drought in the Great Plains and Midwest is getting more intense, federal report shows (Yahoo News) A drought in the Great Plains and the Midwest has quickly grown in its size and severity in the last month, according to an update released Wednesday by the National Integrated Drought Information System (NIDIS). Currently, 60% of the North Central U.S. is in “moderate to exceptional drought” with 30% in “severe drought or worse” according to NIDIS, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The worst-hit areas include Kansas, where 30% of the state is in exceptional drought, and Nebraska, which is 12% in exceptional drought. Smaller parts of Colorado, Missouri and South Dakota are as badly affected. While the entire Midwest has been in a worsening drought for months, the western portions of the region—the Missouri River Basin and the Great Plains—have been hit the hardest. Water has dropped to “record low levels” on the Mississippi, Missouri and Ohio rivers, NIDIS reported, which has impeded boats and shipping.
Hawaii’s Big Island gets warning as huge volcano rumbles (AP) Hawaii officials are warning residents of the Big Island that the world’s largest active volcano, Mauna Loa, is sending signals that it may erupt. Scientists say an eruption isn’t imminent, but they are on alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the volcano’s summit. Experts say it would take just a few hours for lava to reach homes closest to vents on the volcano, which last erupted in 1984. Hawaii’s civil defense agency is holding meetings across the island to educate residents about how to prepare for a possible emergency. They recommend having a ″go″ bag with food, identifying a place to stay once they leave home and making a plan for reuniting with family members. “Not to panic everybody, but they have to be aware of that you live on the slopes of Mauna Loa. There’s a potential for some kind of lava disaster,” said Talmadge Magno, the administrator for Hawaii County Civil Defense.
Retirees drawn by the Florida dream wonder: What now? (Washington Post) For more than a century, millions have flocked to Florida with similar visions to live out their golden years on the beach. The Florida dream exerts a powerful pull: The state consistently ranks among the fastest-growing in the nation. It is forever under construction, with new houses and condos and apartment buildings rising in already-crowded cities. Everyone, it seems, wants a piece of paradise. But Ian, one of the strongest hurricanes ever to hit the United States, upended the idyllic lives so many had planned for themselves in this stretch of the Sunshine State, often pouring in their life’s savings. As Floridians surveyed the damage from the near-Category 5 storm, which killed at least 114 people, some wrestled with painful questions: Should they stay and rebuild? Could they? Florida was already in the throes of a housing crisis; the storm made it worse. Damage estimates reach into the tens of billions, and rebuilding won’t come cheap. Even before Ian, Floridians scrambled to find coverage in the state’s fragile insurance market. Moreover, as climate change makes extreme weather far more common, some question the wisdom of rebuilding on barrier islands and in other delicate coastal areas.
Turkeys (Washington Post) This Thanksgiving turkey is poised to be a bit more expensive, and for once it’s not due to the supply chain. This one is because of the pandemic, and no, not that one. There’s an avian flu that’s been tearing through the U.S. poultry business, with some 44.6 million birds dying from the virus or being depopulated due to exposure this year. Of those, 6 million were turkeys. The avian flu is on track to be more significant than the 2015 bird flu that claimed 50.5 million birds in the worst animal health event in the history of the U.S.
Crisis-stricken Cuba torn between ally Russia, neighbor U.S. (AP) When Hurricane Ian tore through western Cuba in late September, causing an island-wide blackout, it left the government grappling with a deepening energy crisis and simmering discontent among Cubans. It also once again thrust the Caribbean island into the middle of an escalating tug-of-war between its seaside neighbor, the United States, and ally, Russia. At a time when Cuba is urging the Biden administration to ease U.S. sanctions that it says stifle hurricane recovery efforts, Russian oil has flooded into the island, providing relief to debilitating blackouts. Russia has shipped an estimated $352 million in oil to Cuba since the start of the Ukraine war, the biggest inflow from Russia this century and enough to cover about 40% of the shortfall in the island’s supplies, according to independent estimates. The sales also potentially alleviated the weight of international sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. “(It leaves them) between a rock and a hard place,” said William LeoGrande, a professor at American University who has tracked Cuba for years. “Cuba can’t afford to alienate either side in what is shaping up to be a new Cold War.”
In Britain’s inflation crisis, healthy diets are a casualty (Reuters) Fresh vegetables and fish are falling off the menu. Packaged pizzas and processed meat are the dishes of the day. Many British households are turning away from healthier foods as rampant inflation pushes them towards cheaper processed meals, according to consumer data and experts who are worried about the nation taking a nutritional nosedive. Joanne Farrer used to regularly serve her three children roast beef dinners or stews packed with fresh vegetables. Now she’s more likely to give them chicken nuggets and fries or sausages and mashed potatoes, which are “cheaper and filling”. Her monthly welfare payment’s mostly swallowed by rent and the rising cost of gas and electricity. “It doesn’t seem like there’s light at the end of the tunnel,” said the 44-year-old, who does voluntary work for a charity in the city of Portsmouth on England’s south coast. “You think, when’s it going to end? But it’s not.”
Putin demands U.S. respect ‘multipolar’ world (Washington Post) In a keynote foreign policy speech, Russian President Vladimir Putin portrayed Russia as a champion of rising nations in a new multipolar world, which he demanded that the United States and other Western powers begin to respect as equals. Seeking common ground with the right-wing in the West, he described Russia as a defender of traditional Christian values as society has lost its way. Despite making the rivalry with the West a cornerstone of his foreign policy and his every day talking points, Putin insisted that Russia does not fundamentally see itself as the enemy of the West but instead opposes the West’s attempts to instill “strange” and “neoliberal” values in other societies in the world. “There are at the very least two Wests,” Putin said. One is the West of “traditional, primarily Christian, values, freedom, patriotism, the richest culture” that Russia is close to. “But there is another West—aggressive, cosmopolitan, neocolonial, the one acting as a tool of the neoliberal elites,” he continued. “And Russia, of course, will never put up with precisely the dictate of this West.”
Russia warns West: We can target your commercial satellites (Reuters) A senior Russian foreign ministry official said that commercial satellites from the United States and its allies could become legitimate targets for Russia if they were involved in the war in Ukraine. Russia, which in 1957 launched Sputnik 1, the first manmade satellite, into space and in 1961 put the first man in outer space, has a significant offensive space capability—as do the United States and China. In 2021, Russia launched an anti-satellite missile to destroy one of its own satellites. Konstantin Vorontsov, deputy director of the Russian foreign ministry’s department for non-proliferation and arms control, told the United Nations that the United States and its allies were trying to use space to enforce Western dominance. Vorontsov, reading from notes, said the use of Western satellites to aid the Ukrainian war effort was “an extremely dangerous trend”. “Quasi-civilian infrastructure may be a legitimate target for a retaliatory strike,” Vorontsov told the United Nations First Committee, adding that the West’s use of such satellites to support Ukraine was “provocative”.
At least 42 die as storm triggers floods, landslides in Philippines (AP) Flash floods and landslides set off by torrential rains swamped a southern Philippine province, killing at least 42 people, leaving 16 others missing and trapping some residents on their roofs, officials said Friday. Most of the victims were swept away by rampaging floodwaters and drowned or were hit by debris-filled mudslides in three towns in hard-hit Maguindanao province, said Naguib Sinarimbo, the interior minister for a five-province Muslim autonomous region run by former guerrillas. The unusually intense rains were triggered by Tropical Storm Nalgae, which was expected to slam into the country’s eastern coast from the Pacific Ocean on Saturday, forecasters said.
Egypt’s economic woes (WSJ) Egypt and the International Monetary Fund have agreed to an initial deal for a $3 billion loan, officials announced on Thursday. Once approved, it would be the fourth time that Cairo is receiving this type of loan since 2016. Authorities estimate that one-third of Egyptians are currently living in poverty.
Gaslit By Gas Giant (NYT) Following the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the behest of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, President Biden promised to treat the Saudi head of state as a “pariah.” However, the president’s aides saw opportunity in reforging the U.S.’s relationship with Saudi Arabia. They began planning a fun trip to the Middle East. The stops? Israel and Saudi Arabia, where they hoped to get a Saudi guarantee to convince OPEC to increase oil production. Before the trip, Biden’s advisors met with Prince Mohammed, securing a two-part deal with the suspected journalist-killer. First, the Saudis would push a 400,000 barrel per day increase in OPEC oil production, moving up the production bump from the planned September date to July. Next, the Saudis would advocate expanding production by 200,000 barrels per day each month from September to December of 2022. When the oil kingdom met the first part of the deal, Biden announced his trip. After first stopping by Israel, the president headed to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on July 15 to meet Prince Mohammed in person. The two fist-bumped for the cameras and talked behind closed doors, leading U.S. diplomats to believe that the relationship was on the mend. By August, it became clear that this was not the case. Instead of the expected 200,000 barrel per day bump, OPEC only announced a production increase of 100,000 barrels. In September, U.S. officials began hearing rumors that Saudi leaders might push OPEC to actually cut production for October. Despite Prince Mohammed’s assurance that no such cut was coming, on October 5, OPEC announced a decrease of two million barrels per day. Now it looks like the U.S. and the Saudi kingdom are back to square one. The U.S. is now scrambling to deal with the effects on inflation and prices at the pump.
Bees play (Guardian) Hardworking bumblebees like to play just as much as the rest of us, according to a new study in the Animal Behaviour journal. Researchers found that the fuzzy insects are inclined to spin around on tiny balls, even without first receiving instruction or having other incentives. “There are lots of animals who play just for the purposes of enjoyment, but most examples come from young mammals and birds,” Lars Chittka, a professor at Queen Mary University of London, told the Guardian. “This research provides a strong indication that insect minds are far more sophisticated than we might imagine.”

4.14.24 to lola
I hope you’re doing well. dad told me you’re taking mom with you to paris this fall and I was really happy to hear that. I think she really needs a vacation.
abby told me she plans on writing you a letter. I’m worried for her. she doesn’t eat a lot because they can’t afford to get a lot of groceries, so she’s really skinny. when I visited kansas, the first week of april, I was scavenging the fridge & cupboards for food. I gave up - everything was expired - and I got food from restaurants and cafes instead. abby was having a hard time job searching, and she was doing it all on her phone because her laptop broke. she also didn’t have data on her phone so she could only use her phone with wifi. she finally got a job today though at a coffeeshop, I’m really proud of her. I hope someday she moves to new york city so we can live together. she tries her hardest to understand dad, and so does mom. when abby’s stressed, she handles it by talking efficiently about what she needs to do: an ever growing to do list. I think her strategy is to take it day by day. she got really sick when I visited her in kansas, so I asked dad to get her soup but it was stressful because she doesn’t have health insurance. I’m scared for my sister, and I’m sad about all the stress and sadness she must be holding, even though she tries not to hold it. a few days after I had arrived in kansas, mom encouraged dad to tell me and abby. of course we already knew, but this was the first time he ever openly acknowledged this to us. later that week, I asked dad to take me to the storage unit where he had been moving all our things. I wanted to look for my journals, which I had explicitly asked him not to pack until I got to kansas because I feared exactly this would happen: the journals would be most amidst the disorganized chaos of the storage unit. When I stood there in front of all the boxes at the storage unit, I knew it was a lost cause. I got upset and started crying and was angry with dad – he was bewildered and started looking through all the boxes for my journals. I tried to explain to him it’s not the journals that upset me – it’s that our family never got a chance to process our loss together. we had a happy family in this house we’ve lived in for almost my whole life, and then the house contained and bad memories and we’re essentially rushing to bring everything to storage. I’m sure you already know everything. I’m not sure how you might be feeling about all this, I think all of us must be handling this in different ways. I don’t think I even know who my dad is, after all this time. Do you? I hope this letter didn’t take an unexpected turn. I was trying to share how abby & mom are, but our lives impact each other so it becomes more than that and about all of us. and as for me, I’m better than I was a few months ago, in that I’m in a clearer state of mind to navigate these more painful moments. everything else in my life is easier, I’m employed and I have friends who care about me. I’ve been decorating and organizing my room, and writing letters to home, and reading library books, and trying to learn how to cook simple meals. I hope you can visit me in NYC soon - you’re always welcome to stay with me. my roommates are also very welcoming, I’ve grown close to them, especially niko. it’s easy to grow close to people I live with, because I get to talk to them about our lives when we come back home after work. i’ll write you soon - love, felice

Here are the best and worst US cities to raise a family in 2024

Here are the best and worst US cities to raise a family in 2024
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The choice of where to raise a family is a big one for millions of Americans — and some cities are better picks than others. A recent study by WalletHub showed just which U.S. cities are the most family friendly in 2024. The company compared more than 180 U.S. cities, including the 150 most populated ones, to find the best cities to live in based on various criteria. SINGLE MOM TRAVELS TO 17 COUNTRIES WITH BABY DURING 3-YEAR PAID MATERNITY LEAVE The five key dimensions include family fun, health and safety, education and child care, affordability and socio-economics. Within each of those, other metrics evaluated included the number of playgrounds, skate parks and mini-golf locations per capita. The study also looked at ideal weather, water quality, access to pediatricians, violent crime rate, high school graduation rate, summer learning opportunities, cost of living and more. BEST CITIES TO RETIRE IN 2024In the socioeconomic category, WalletHub analyzed the separation and divorce rate in cities, the unemployment rate, the wealth gap and other metrics. Here are the top five U.S. cities to raise a family in 2024 according to this report.Counting down here …WalletHub named the city of Fremont, California, the most family-friendly city in the United States. That’s due in part to its highest median family income after adjusting for the cost of living, at close to $122,000. THIS SCENIC SOUTHERN CITY IS THE MOST POPULAR PLACE TO MOVE TO IN 2024It was also ranked high due to 50.5% of its families having children under age 18, making it one of the highest rates in the country. The city of Fremont also has a high percentage of public schools and summer camp opportunities. HERE ARE THE 10 HAPPIEST CITIES IN AMERICAWallet Hub also said of Fremont that its “residents are able to stay healthy. Only 1.4% of children lack health insurance, the second-lowest percentage in the country, and only 1.1% of the population lacks access to healthy food. The city also has the fifth-most parkland acres per capita, allowing for good outdoor exercise opportunities.”Ranking second on the list is Overland Park, Kansas, which was recognized for its low unemployment rate and high median family income. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTERThe Kansas City suburb also has a low separation and divorce rate and is safe for children with a low traffic fatality rate, according to WalletHub. Irvine, California, came in third for its high-ranking schools and lowest violent crime rate per capita. Cities at the bottom of the list included Gulfport, Mississippi; Newark, New Jersey; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; and Memphis, Tennessee — which came in last place. Other notable finds in the WalletHub study: New York City was tied with Chicago and Charlotte for the greatest number of playgrounds per capita. The greatest number of attractions, in general, was a five-way tie between New York City, Chicago, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco. WalletHub analyst Cassandra Happe said in a media statement, “Finding the best place to raise a family is difficult between balancing an affordable cost of living with good educational opportunities, safety and enough recreation to keep kids entertained.”For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews/lifestyleShe added, “On top of all of these factors, people also often want to raise their children close to their extended family.”She also said, “Current or prospective parents can benefit from narrowing down their choices to a few of the best cities that are within a reasonable drive of their family.”

Kansas Senate Bill 233
The latest version of the proposed bill - PDF
Introduced by Senator Thompson and sponsored by the Committee of Health and Human Services, SB233 targets trans-Kansas under 18 by restricting their right to medical attention and threatening Kansas medical providers and state employees who provide care with lawsuits and revocation of their licenses. Gov. Kelly has vetoed the bill, and legislation is currently working to overturn said veto.
If SB 233 were to become law, this would ban...
Puberty blockers, HRT, and other medical necessities.
The usage of insurance from being used to cover necessary healthcare and prescriptions.
Institutions and individuals, such as social workers, therapists, teachers, counselors, and more, from receiving state funds to promote or advocate for social transitioning and essential healthcare.
This extreme, transphobic law prohibits freedom of speech and expression, affects parental rights, limits the ability of state employees to serve Kansas children, and most of all, hurts trans youth.
Help protect Kansas trans youth, their medical freedom, and their rights from Kansas legislators determined to politicize them and use the lack of public knowledge on this issue for their own agenda.

Maximizing Retirement Benefits for FERS Special Provision Employees
Tumblr media
Smarter Feds offers Federal Employee Retirement Workshops all across the country. Federal employees should understand their Federal retirement options early so FERS Retirement Training gives knowledge of the federal benefits programs and professional experience in the complex field of retirement planning, and ways to optimize and maximize their federal retirement income and make well-informed decisions about their future. One of the most crucial aspects of this planning is ensuring that you receive the appropriate training and guidance to make informed decisions regarding your retirement benefits.
The Importance of FERS Special Provision Employee Training:
FERS Special Provision employees, such as Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs), play a unique role in the Federal workforce. Their job demands high levels of skill, responsibility, and often involves exposure to stressors that are not typical in other careers. Therefore, the retirement planning needs of ATCs and other Special Provision employees differ from those of standard FERS employees.
Air Traffic Controllers, in particular, have a demanding job that requires acute concentration and precision. Their retirement benefits, therefore, need to be optimized to ensure a comfortable retirement after years of dedicated service. This is where specialized retirement training comes into play.
FERS Air Traffic Controller Retirement Training:
Air Traffic Controllers fall under the FERS Special Provision category, and as such, they have unique retirement benefits and considerations. Retirement training for ATCs should cover various crucial aspects, including:
Understanding Special Provision Rules: Special Provision employees have different rules regarding retirement eligibility and annuity calculations. Training should clarify these rules to ensure ATCs know when they can retire and what benefits they can expect.
Maximizing Annuity and TSP Benefits: Retirement training should provide strategies for optimizing annuity payments and utilizing the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) effectively. This includes guidance on when to start TSP withdrawals and how to minimize tax implications.
Healthcare and Insurance: Special Provision employees may be eligible for continued health benefits in retirement. Training should explain these options and help ATCs choose the most suitable healthcare and insurance plans.
Retirement Income Planning: Planning for a secure retirement involves considering various income sources, such as Social Security, TSP, and any additional investments. Specialized training can help ATCs create a comprehensive retirement income strategy.
         TSP Strategies Training in Tampa:
In Tampa, TSP Strategies Training focuses specifically on optimizing the Thrift Savings Plan, a critical component of FERS retirement benefits. Understanding TSP strategies is essential for securing a comfortable retirement for FERS Special Provision employees.
Conclusion:
Retirement training is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor, especially for FERS Special Provision employees like Air Traffic Controllers. Specialized training tailored to their unique circumstances can make a significant difference in optimizing retirement benefits, ensuring financial security, and enjoying a well-deserved retirement after years of dedicated service. Whether attending workshops in Kansas City or TSP Strategies Training in Tampa, taking advantage of these resources is a crucial step toward a successful retirement. Make sure to explore these opportunities and plan for a secure and comfortable retirement as a FERS Special Provision employee.

CVS found the right prescription on Wednesday to keep its stores open in the Kansas City area and avoid a repeat of a work stoppage last week by pharmacists: It promised to boost hiring to ease workloads that sometimes make it hard to take a bathroom break. But it won’t be easy to resolve the problems that have been growing as pharmacists at CVS and other drug stores in the U.S. took on more duties in recent years and are gearing up to deliver this year’s latest flu and COVID-19 vaccines.“It all relates to not enough dollars going in to hire the appropriate staff to be able to deliver the services,” said Ron Fitzwater, CEO of the Missouri Pharmacy Association.Pharmacists in at least a dozen Kansas City-area CVS pharmacies did not show up for work last Thursday and Friday and planned to be out again this Wednesday until the company sent its chief pharmacy officer with promises to fill open positions and increase staffing levels. It was one of the latest examples nationwide of workers fed up enough to take action. But unlike in the ongoing strikes at the automakers or in Hollywood, the pharmacists weren't demanding raises or more vacation, but more workers to help them.CVS spokeswoman Amy Thibault said the company is “focused on addressing the concerns raised by our pharmacists so we can continue to deliver the high-quality care our patients depend on.”Chief Pharmacy Officer Prem Shah apologized for not addressing concerns sooner in a memo to Kansas City-area staff that was obtained by USA Today. He promised to remain in the city until the problems are addressed and come back regularly to check on the progress.“We want you, our valued pharmacy teams, to be in a position to succeed. We are working hard to support you and are here to help and create sustainable solutions,” Shah said as he encouraged the pharmacists to continue to share their concerns even anonymously. It's unclear why workload concerns that are common industrywide led to a work stoppage in Kansas City. The pharmacists involved are not in a union and haven't spoken publicly, so it's not entirely clear how satisfied they are with the company's response.Jeff Jonas, a portfolio manager for Gabelli Funds, said there’s a nationwide shortage of pharmacy workers, prompting companies to push long work hours with few bathroom and lunch breaks. At the same time, the industry is “not really unionized, so I wouldn’t expect a big, coordinated action” to be inspired by the Kansas City demonstration, he said.At stores with only one pharmacist on duty, the pharmacy has to shut down every time that person leaves the area because a pharmacist must be present to supervise technicians in their work. The American Pharmacists Association said in a statement that it supports the stand the Kansas City pharmacists took.“Pharmacists who find themselves in situations where the welfare of others is in question should always pause, evaluate the situation, and take the steps necessary to ensure safe, optimal patient care,” the group said.CVS Health has about 300,000 employees and runs prescription drug plans through one of the nation’s largest pharmacy benefits managers. Its Aetna insurance arm covers more than 25 million people, and the company has nearly 10,000 drugstores. The company said last month that operating income at its drugstores fell 17% as reimbursement rates from patient's insurance providers for drugs remained tight. CVS eliminated about 5,000 jobs, but company officials said none of those involved dealing with customers.Bled Tanoe, a hospital pharmacist in Oklahoma who previously worked for Walgreens, runs a social media campaign called “Pizza Is Not Working” aimed at raising awareness about the industry's working conditions. Its name comes from the pizzas that are routinely given to overwhelmed medical workers to raise morale. Tanoe said she was “wowed” by the CVS demonstration.“They pretty much risk their reputation, their livelihood to take a stand because serving the patients is so important to them,” Tanoe said.
Amanda Applegate with the Kansas Pharmacists Association said pharmacists have always had a lot on their plate.“When we are not valued as health care professionals, it doesn’t allow the job that needs to be done to be done," she said. "And that’s keeping you know, patients safe — right drug, right patient, right time, right dose.”___Associated Press reporter Heather Hollingsworth contributed to this report from Mission, Kan., and Summer Ballentine contributed from Columbia, Mo.

Unfortunately, many individuals, including those in Kansas City, face barriers to receiving essential dental services due to financial constraints. Free dental clinics play a crucial role in bridging this gap by providing comprehensive care to underserved populations, addressing not only immediate dental needs but also contributing to improved overall health. This article delves into the significance of free dental clinics in Kansas City, the range of services they offer, and their positive impact on the community.
Tumblr media
The Importance of Dental Care:
Dental care extends far beyond aesthetics; it is integral to one's overall health. Oral health issues can lead to pain, discomfort, and a host of other health problems. Poor oral health has been linked to conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and even complications during pregnancy. Despite its importance, many individuals lack access to regular dental care due to financial constraints or lack of insurance coverage.
Role of Free Dental Clinics:
Free dental clinics operate with the mission of providing accessible and affordable dental care to underserved communities. These clinics play a critical role in ensuring that individuals who may not have the means to afford traditional dental services still receive the care they need. The comprehensive services offered by these clinics go beyond addressing immediate dental concerns; they contribute to the overall well-being of patients.
Comprehensive Services Offered:

Restorative Procedures: Free clinics offer services such as fillings, extractions, and root canals to address issues like cavities, infections, and damaged teeth.
Emergency Dental Care: Free clinics are often equipped to handle dental emergencies, providing immediate relief for issues like severe toothaches, abscesses, and broken teeth.
Dental Education: Education is a significant component of free dental clinics' efforts. They often offer educational sessions to patients, empowering them with the knowledge needed to maintain good oral hygiene practices.
Referrals: In cases where more specialized care is required, free dental clinics can provide referrals to other healthcare providers or specialists.
Positive Impact on the Community:
The impact of free dental clinics in Kansas City extends well beyond individual patients. These clinics contribute to the community in several meaningful ways:
Improved Overall Health: By addressing oral health issues, free dental clinics indirectly contribute to improved overall health, preventing potential complications linked to poor oral health.
Enhanced Quality of Life: Access to dental care improves individuals' quality of life by relieving pain, enabling them to eat and speak comfortably, and boosting their self-esteem.
Reduced Healthcare Costs: By providing preventive and early intervention care, free dental clinics help reduce the burden on emergency rooms and hospitals, leading to cost savings for the healthcare system.
Empowerment: Free dental clinics empower individuals to take charge of their oral health. Education provided at these clinics equips patients with the tools to make informed decisions about their dental care.
Overcoming Barriers:
Free dental clinics face their own set of challenges in providing comprehensive care. These challenges include limited resources, volunteer availability, and the need for sustainable funding. Despite these obstacles, many free dental clinics in Kansas City have managed to make a significant positive impact on the lives of underserved individuals.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, free dental clinic in Kansas City offer much more than just dental care; they provide comprehensive services that contribute to the overall health and well-being of underserved populations. The services offered, including preventive care, restorative procedures, emergency dental care, education, and referrals, are integral to addressing both immediate dental needs and preventing long-term health complications. The positive impact of these clinics ripples through the community, improving overall health, enhancing quality of life, and reducing healthcare costs. While challenges exist, the dedication of free dental clinics to serving the underserved is evident in the transformative effects they have on individuals and the broader community. Through their tireless efforts, free dental clinics are a testament to the power of accessible and compassionate healthcare.
