Xylo-oligosaccharides have economic benefits as it can be produced from agricultural waste. The waste generated from agro industries mainly consists of plant biomass that can be converted into non-digestible sugars. XOS have great potential as a prebiotic, which helps in reduction of LDL cholesterol, maintaining intestinal pH value, and improves immunological systems.
Market Dynamics
Xylo-oligosaccharide has wide applications in neutraceuticals & pharmaceuticals and food & beverages industry. In food & beverages industry, XOS is used as an additive in soy milk, soft drinks, jams, honey, tea, cocoa drinks, and dairy products (such as milk and yoghurt) to formulate healthy food. XOS has prebiotic potential and its exceptional health benefits include enhancing absorption of calcium, reduces risk of colon cancer, improvement in bowel function, and act as an antioxidant. These health benefits will drive growth of the global xylo-oligosaccharides market.
Popularity and increasing consumption of prebiotics is projected to boost demand for xylo-oligosaccharide in the forecast period. According to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the consumption of prebiotics and probiotics by adults in the U.S. has increased by four times during 2012 – 2007.
However, production of xylo-oligosaccharides requires large amount of investment and costly & specialized equipment. Moreover, production of xylo-oligosaccharides generates unwanted products such as furfural and hydroxymethyl furfural in the mixture of XOS which can cause skin allergy, such disadvantages may restraint growth of the xylo-oligosaccharides market.
Market Outlook
Among applications, neutraceuticals & pharmaceuticals segment accounted for the highest market share in the global xylo-oligosaccharides market in 2017. This is due to various advantages of XOS such as water binding capacity, sweetening ability, and fat replacement value. Moreover, xylo-oligosaccharides have a host of health benefits such as it act as an anti-allergic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory. Such advantages will attract more pharmaceuticals & neutraceuticals companies to adopt xylo-oligosaccharides as a non-digestible sugar in their products.
North America held the highest market share in the global xylo-oligosaccharides market in 2017 and is projected to remain the dominant region during the forecast period. This is due to rising health awareness among consumers. According to U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 3.9 million adult population consumed prebiotic or probiotic products in 2016.
Asia Pacific is projected to be the fastest growing region in the market over the forecast period, owing to increasing number of pharmaceutical industries and rising incidence of diabetes in the region. For instance, according to Indian Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), pharmaceutical industry is the third-largest industry in India in terms of volume and accounted for around 20% of the global pharmaceutical industries in 2017. Asia is home to most diabetic patients in the world. In 2017, according to International Diabetes Federation, diabetic population of India and China accounted for 8.8% and 10.9% of the total adult’s diabetic population of the respective countries.

On the left is the common base coloration found in the north eastern ocean and along the Ouwuiwui archipelago, and on the right is the base colors south east of them, against the southern ice sheet. The latter is that of First Contact with humans and other members of the Coalition, though it is unknown how many species have landed badly on their planet and interacted before succumbing to the elements.
Average adult length: 14 ft/4.28 meters
Tumblr media
This map is only of a section of their planet.
Although there are many cultures and ethnicities across the planet, the main ones encountered reside by and beneath the southern ice sheet. As such, all names used are what those respective peoples are referred to by this first contact culture.
Differences in ethnicity are seen according to shape and size of lateral and final tendrils, various spots and stripes invisible to the human eye, and by humans themselves, coloration on the visible light spectrum.
Body tattoos using sharp hollow shells found on the sea floor and the bio-glow ink found in some prey animals are popular. Tendril wraps and body wraps that are decorated with shells and patterned holes or folds are used as jewelry.
Their home planet, formerly Kotǎ II, now Apa /aʘ̂a/, is a large ice planet, with superdeep methane-oxygen seas, orbiting a red dwarf. As such, the planet is so incredibly cold that other species can't visit without pressurized temperature suits. Despite their physical isolation, many hebi xo are beyond excited to meet other species without either party dying. Having only been discovered 4 years prior to canon, they are new to many things, with spoken language being one of them.
The language spoken by hebi xo is actually a constructed language in-world, based off of various sign languages found around the planet. It uses what little sounds they can make, such as pops, whistles, and vowel-like calls. This language, called Ax̆umiladi, was made with the express purpose of talking with other species such as humans.
Tumblr media
There is a writing system, but I can't find my documentation for it💀
Currently my most important character from this species is Mir̆du /˧i˩:ʘ̂ʘ̂u/-/iʘ:u/, a linguist and human enthusiast who understands the Viym Addaŧ dialect of Jěyotuy, though he cannot physically speak it. He works on the Kelta station that was built to orbit his planet.
Hebi xo eat a lot of things in their planet's oceans, but most notable are the polymycetes, a large clade of fungal organisms that feed passively on microscopic organisms in the seas. While they usually look like one large organism, they are actually bundles of high specialized individuals that act as one to ensure better overall nutrition. Of these polymycetes, there are three major types.
Drifters: The most diverse clade of polymycetes, resembling mushrooms in general shape. The base parts are the cap, the trunk, and the tendrils. In some species of drifter polymycetes the trunk and tendrils appear merged. The cap is used to catch on to ocean current and travel efficiently through the oceans without actually being able to move under their own power. The trunk holds the bulk of the polymycete, providing stability. The tendrils are used to absorb microscopic prey and also contain gamete information that can be exchanged on touch.
Webs: These are the oldest form of polymycete, and often have one uniform design. These behemoths can sprawl for several miles, clinging to the underside of ice floes and ice sheets. The often resemble spider's webs or fishnets, full of interlocking chains. Due to size, these can catch larger organisms as well, stretching over holes in the ice to entangle unsuspecting prey when it breaches the surface.
Stalks: While they also attach themselves to the underside of various ice structures, these are more complex than the simple webs. Instead of clinging completely, these hang down into the depths, with some species being only a few inches long, and others reaching up to 15 feet into the dark. Their tendrils work similar to those on drifters, absorbing microscopic organisms with ease. But due to the more stationary nature, and the drastic size differences, some stalks can also entangle and digest macroscopic organisms like their web cousins.

In death, the body fades drastically, due to body color being regulated by changes in hormones. Death is often accompanied by a large burst of random colors as the dying mind fires off a scramble of activity.
Tumblr media
Nervous system: Top left. Largely controlled by a massive brain, though they can survive without most of it, it just appears to take up a large area due to it also being responsible for respiration and spreading nutrients through the body. Provides nerves and has a permeable layer of skin above it to take in sunlight, air, and food.
Solid Digestion: Top right. Processes solid food once it is dissolved by the venom gland and absorbed by the nervous system. Here it is turned into energy, and further distributed throughout the body.
Chemical Digestion: Bottom left. Processes chemicals in the water into energy, can keep a hebi xo alive in times of famine or long journeys. Also processes waste matter to be expelled or further broken down by the venom gland.
Hormone Gland: Responsible for their color changing ability, and also drives instincts. Usually only change color along the top and bottom of the body, and along tendrils. A dysfunction in this organ may render an individual "mute", as signed languages include use of pattern changes.
Tumblr media
Joints: Left. made of fibers similar to cartilage, and act as bony structure and support. Hold together the major bending points on the body, while also stopping major organs from being crushed or expanding too much in pressure changes. Sensing differences in pressure is like another sense for hebi xo, and these joints are able to endure incredible amounts of pressure.
Venom Gland: Turn waste into venom, which is used to stun and dissolve prey into a consumable liquid that is then absorbed.

7 for the spec bio ask?
link to the question list here!
7. How would you hug them?
Hebi xo enjoy hugs a lot, and they're a very tactile species in general! The only real setback is that we as humans can't tolerate the temperature or chemical makeup of their natural environment, so we can't actually touch them skin to skin. Suit hugs are the next best thing though :)
Tumblr media
S̭eźit are a bit too skittish to be hugged usually, but Ṋ̭niz̀apas̖ here likes to be hugged around the head and neck. Don't approach from the back or he might bolt.
Tumblr media
Yotavuș vary greatly in terms of preference, but its generally easier to give them side hugs! Not drawing a diagram cus i will get too obsessed with drawing their fur and become Lost lmao

nearly late for Spectember day 15: Megafauna!
The methane seas of Apa/Kotǎ II are only methane for about the depths of our own oceans... but they continue much further below the kriopelagic boundary zone where the methane floats atop the vast depths of liquid oxygen. The deepest survived depth done in basic dive protection(a coating of bioluminescent fungi that promote methane exchange so they can continue to breathe) by a Hebi Xo is at the very surface of the “blue zone”, ~18500 meters deep. They have yet to name this beast that lurks beneath their domain, but what they do know is that there must be something larger there with it, something that left those deep gouges on its side...

Spectember day 3: Island Environment
hoppin planets over, from Taŧeșě to Kotǎ II, known as of four years ago in canon as Ax̆umiladi. Home of methane-oxygen seas, a vast polymycete fungus population, and an inquisitive native sapient species called the Hebi Xo.
more under the cut!
Pictured here is Auh̆r, a Hebi Xo from the Ahih̆i/Ouwuiwui archipelago, along with two types of polymycetes: a type of Drifter from the north eastern seas, and a species of Stalk only found in the scattered floating ice floes of the deeper oceans. Auh̆r is most likely on the hunt, as these sorts of fungi are a staple food across the planet. note that there is a coloration difference in the first image, this is because the Hebi Xo can see a wider range of color than humans(and most other sapients in my universe) can, so that is an approximation of how others of his species would see him.
Hebi Xo speak a multitude of sign languages throughout the many cultures in their seas, utilizing tendril movement and changing color patterns not visible to the human eye. Due to this, initial communication with the sapients of the Coalition was difficult at first, but a group in the location of first contact, in the seas by the southeastern ice sheet worked together with human xenolinguist and archaeologist Dhelie "Timmin" Yok-Shing to make an in-world conlang using the sounds Hebi Xo could produce.
Universal translators work much better with spoken languages, and current Hebi Xo ambassadors often learn to understand human, yotavuș, etc languages despite being physically unable to speak them. These guys are really excited to learn that “aliens” are real and are indeed so Alien to what they’re used to, so a lot of stuff that comes out of universal translators from them have to undergo some volume control.
