A Redemption’s Promise Fancast

As y’all may know, I introduced a handful of reoccurring original characters into the world of Pirates of the Caribbean via Redemption’s Promise. Each one has become uniquely special to me, some going on to have parts in sequel fics or other AUs entirely, and, as I’ve had multiple readers express curiosity, I decided to share whom I was picturing as I wrote.

Rebecca (Becca) Scott

‘Elizabeth,’ her full name sounds almost foreign in Becca’s dulcet voice. ‘We are, each one of us, living a lie.’

Truth and Lies

Elizabeth’s closest female companion in Port Royal, Rebecca Scott is highborn, beautiful, and playfully wicked as they come, guilty of goading ‘Dear Lizzie’ into all manner of mischief in their youth (though, admittedly, it wouldn’t have taken much effort). She’s described having fair, freckled skin and unruly ginger hair. 

In my mind, I pictured Carey Mulligan as Becca, specifically the character she played in Northanger Abbey, Isabella Thorpe, who was full of the latest gossip, always eager to have fun, and a shameless flirt.

Lieutenant Harry Toombs

Lieutenant Toombs affects a rather unflattering French accent and prances about the cabin, a wig he’s somehow fashioned out of parchment held to his head. ‘Oh, Capteen Norreengton, but you are ze most vexing of ad-ver-sa-reez!’ He crows, face red with drink.

Redemption’s Promise (Chapter 9: Friends)

Harry Toombs, a lieutenant along with Theodore Groves and Andrew Gillette, is one of James’ officers he hadn’t taken the time to know in his previous life, but this time does, and they become friends. Toombs is boisterous, always up for a drink, quick to laugh, and even quicker to lose all his money at cards. The only description given of him physically is that he has blue-grey eyes.

Due to his personality, I envisioned Simon Pegg while I was writing Toombs’ scenes, especially in the latter part of the fic. I’ve always admired Pegg’s ability to take a comedic character and turn them into a multi-faceted dramatic one, giving whichever film he’s in a surprising emotional weight.

Captain Robert MacMurray

MacMurray’s grin is almost feral in its intensity. The easy humor is gone from his eyes, replaced with something sharp and frigid. ‘We meet again, James the excellent sailor.’

Redemption’s Promise (Chapter 26: King)

Robert MacMurray, Captain of The Retribution, is a Scottish pirate and contact of Hector Barbossa. A formidable and avid enemy of His Majesty’s Royal Navy, MacMurray puts off a pleasant air that belies his reputation. He’s generous and gregarious with his friends and his crew, but ruthless with his adversaries. He’s observed as being tall, barrel-chested, and ‘broad of shoulder with a closely cropped black beard shot through with iron gray.’

Now, this is perhaps my most obvious fancast, as I pretty much verbatim described Graham McTavish’s character on Outlander, Dougal MacKenzie. The two aren’t much similar in personality, but, as I was rewatching the first season around the same time I came up with the character...

I couldn’t help myself! Graham McTavish is so very handsome!  ♡

Arthur ‘Fitz’ Fitzpatrick

It seems churlish silence isn’t going to be an effective method of escaping because the boy continues to prattle despite James’ best efforts not to engage. Within ten minutes he’s learned Fitz’s entire life story without having asked a single question.

Redemption’s Promise (Chapter 18: Choices)

En route to Tortuga, James almost literally stumbles over Arthur Fitzpatrick who he notes is ‘no older than sixteen, with dark, dancing eyes and jet black hair pulled back into a messy queue.’ James observes he’s flighty, tenacious, and genuine. And above all, he will not. Shut. UP.

In an author’s note at the end of chapter 19, I mentioned I’d choose Tom Holland to play Fitz. Mostly, it’s due to his youthful exuberance and stellar smile. And the fact that he’s a total cinnamon roll. Tom’s look from The Lost City of Z (sans mustache) was pretty on point for Fitz.

ASK THE FANDOM--RESPONSES

Here’s this week’s Ask the Fandom question:

I’ve been thinking about the PCHer nicknames lately: How did Weevil get his nickname? Was Chardo the guy’s real name (which it could be) or a nickname (since it can also be a something of a slur)? Did Felix not have a nickname out of respect for his brother, since he used the most obvious one?

And here’s what you had to say:

@feeisamarshmallow--Ohh I like this question a lot, I love fleshing out minor characters. I always thought Chardo was his name, because Leticia refers to him as “Chardo”, but she initially calls Weevil “Eli” in 1x02.  

Leticia: “Eli is still seventeen. Chardo is eighteen, and he’s got a record. They’d send him to prison.”

But then she calls him Weevil, so I don’t know if that means anything. 

Leticia, cont’d: “Weevil can do 4 months of juvie." 

I honestly didn’t know what Chardo meant, let alone that it also had the connotation of being a slur. I don’t speak Spanish, or live in an area with a lot of Hispanic people, (and I’m not American) so I was definitely missing some context there. From internet searches, I couldn’t even definitively find how offensive/slur-like the name can be considered, so I don’t know. It doesn’t look like Chardo is a super common name, so I’d lean towards it is a nickname, albeit a well-established one. That’s interesting though, at it’s most innocuous meaning (that I could find), Chardo is a slang term for a black man. So, does the (presumed) nickname refer to his heritage? To just his looks? (that’s kinda offensive). It’s clearly well-enough established and accepted that his grandmother calls him Chardo.

A popular story in fic is that "Weevil” was a childhood nickname-turned gang nickname. I like that theory because it explains why Leticia also sometimes calls him Weevil. Often the story is of the variety that Weevil is small but tough/destructive, like a weevil bug. I particularly like the origin story in this fic, Requiem for a Lost Soul by fiona d on ff.net. 

Side note: I’ve also always wondered whether Weevil’s name is just Eli, or whether that’s short for Elias. 

I think as for Felix not having a nickname like his brother, Gustavio “The Reaper”, there’s a mix of names and nicknames in the gang. Hector is another key player that doesn’t have a nickname. For whatever reason, a nickname just wasn’t given or didn’t stick for Felix, that’s my personal headcanon. 

I’m trying to think of any other PCHers mentioned by name. Thumper is obviously a nickname, real name Eduardo. There’s a Bootsy mentioned, and a Dodie (spelling?) which are most likely nicknames too. But Cervando is most likely his real name. There’s Arturo, the freshman who Weevil wouldn’t let join up, and who’s later running the gang (and history repeats itself…) Maybe he took a nickname after he joined the gang, but at least Hector still refers to him as “Arturo” after he’s joined up (2x19 I think). And in the scripts, the other PCHer charged with stealing from the Sac N Pac in the pilot is Phuong Nguyen, but we never hear what the PCHers call him. I think that’s it. 

Other side note: How devastating must it have been for the Toombs’ to bury not one, but two, brothers before they graduated high school. In the pilot, Felix mentions having a little sister (who likes “ponies and juice boxes”) and I think a lot about her growing up going through the grief of losing both her older brothers. 

Anyways that’s my (rather extensive) 2 cents on things. Thanks anon for the great question!
