Silly Sandman/Mirrormask Headcanons /Crack theory

(For goodness sakes dont think these were intentional and go ask Mr Gaiman about it I'd die 😅)

The world in MirrorMask is actually a part of the Dreaming, a skerry on the edge or a corner of it somewhere. Helena's dreams amd imaginings of the world she created were so vibrant that it became a permanant fixture in the Dreaming.

Helena's not quite Dream Vortex levels of effecting the Dreaming but she's definitly got a supernaturally effective imagination, unkowinglu creating her own private skerry, with the Mirrormask as her personal sigil

This allowed the Dark Princess to become a proper Nightmare, (the kind based on doublegangers and people replacing you and no one realizing) and she was eventually able to slip out into the Waking World using the MirrorMask, pulling Helena into the Dreaming and sparking off the whole adventure
