Two of nine.
Actually not a reference to the Borg and nothing to do with Angmar…. Photo and post tour of the south west UK rivers…..Falmouth. In the first post of this nine part series I took a look , via photographs, of the lovely Helford river which alongside little known Gillan creek forms the usual western limit of my home cruising ground – in this post we’re working our way slowly east and just 5 miles…

“Bamboo in Winter” Signed and numbered limited edition print on 250gsm fine art paper measuring 13 x 13.5 inches (33 x 34.25 cm) from a painting made for our 2021 exhibition "The Weight of Snow" at Corey Helford Gallery. It is an edition of 45 prints and is the "winter" image in a 4 print cycle called  "Four Seasons in the Garden". The fall and winter images will be released later in the year.
About this image in the cycle: When it snows in our backyard, the sasa (dwarf bamboo) end up covered in snow. It was surprising to see how much snow each bamboo leaf could hold despite how flimsy their branches seem when the wind is blowing.
Buy it here now!
NOTE: We only have  about 9 prints left in the edition, so order soon!

The fact that the pub in the background had a ton of scaffolding next to it didn't make for the best scenic outcome...but I love these type of challenges!

One of Nine.
New blog and gallery series – the tidal rivers of south west England. First post – the Helford river. When asked I say that my home cruising ground stretches from just inside the Lizard peninsular to the west and extends to the river Exe in the east. Before that, to the west of the Lizard I don’t often go because an Atlantic swell often makes for harder conditions for a small sailboat and at…

Richard Ahnert's "While We Wait."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Opening on January 28th, 2023 at Corey Helford Gallery in Los Angeles, California is artist Richard Ahnert's solo exhibition, "While We Wait."
Ahnert takes anthropomorphic painting to a new level, lacing it with a quiet, yet unmistakable animism – an abiding kinship between human and animal. He uses the relationship between animals and humans to explore themes of emotion, metaphor, and narrative with a satirical twist. Storytelling, understated humor, and deep reflection are at the heart of his practice.
In While We Wait, Ahnert invites us to observe wild and domestic animals in urban settings, interacting with common objects they would be unlikely to encounter in their natural environment. In this collection of oil paintings, Ahnert elaborates on the theme that permeates much of his work − the complex, dynamic, and fundamental relationship between humankind and nature. At first glance, the artist captures the viewer’s attention with playful colors and shapes, dreamy story book imagery, and witty scenarios. Those first impressions can be endearing and enduring enough to hold our gaze, to keep us invested in the piece simply for what it is, enjoying the composition or palette, a comfortable pause from everything beyond the borders of the frame. As is customary with the artist’s work, the pieces in While We Wait also quietly nudge and tug at us, welcoming our head, our heart, our imagination, our instincts to feel, notice, and consider more about what is happening around us and within us. What are we waiting for, why, and what is next? Do the animal protagonists in these pieces represent us, our innocence, and adaptability or are they guides leading us towards stewardship and conservation? What occupies them while they wait…patience, love, longing, concern, wonder, or hope? Shall we take a cue from them, finding stillness, allowing ourselves time to reflect, to heal, to plan, encouraging us to emerge centered, able to preserve and protect ourselves, each other, our environment? Ahnert hopes, that however these pieces are perceived, is that what comes next was worth the wait.
