this will get pretentious real quick, but i think character playlists work in a way that, like language in the ways of poetry and writing, you CAN break the main rules if you craft it well. its an artistic venture to further understand the mind of the character
if you're going to break the mold of the traditional "this song is whole heartedly about the character. full stop" the playlists cannot just be "what they would listen to" where its just the bands and genres they would jam out to and mindlessly tune out the lyrics, thats NOTHING on its own, you need to ARTFULLY SEASON that shit with their personality, their thought process, their interests, their mood, you need to skim through the bands they would listen to and get the goddamn cream of the crop. you need to FEEL the way that character found the song, felt the inherent kinship with the lyrics, and built a home in that music. its gotta be self-centered and selfish!
