brother, sister
el hermano, la hermana
Do you know, or can you think of anyone named Herman? Like: Herman Melville, Pee-wee Herman, Herman Brood, Herman de Coninck, Herman Munster,.. Imagine him being your brother. How would that be?
Picture your brother being a very hairy man.
Do you have brothers or sisters?
¿Tienes hermanos o hermanas?

Poetry // Herman de Coninck
The way you say to a sick little daughter:
my miniature human, my tiny homemade
sorrow, and it doesn't help;
the way you lay a hand on her hot forehead,
as thinly as snow lies down,
and it doesn't help:
so poetry helps.
(translated by Sadiqa de Meijer, with Kristien Hennerechts)

Lithe Love
by Herman de Coninck
your sweaters & your white & red
scarves & your stockings & your panties
(made with love, said the commercial)
& your bras (there's poetry in
such things, especially when you wear them) -
they're scattered around in this poem
the way they are in your room.
come on in, reader, make yourself
comfortable, don't trip over the
syntax & kicked-off shoes, have a seat.
(meanwhile we kiss each other in this
sentence in brackets, that way
the reader won't see us.) what do you think of it,
this is a window to look at
reality, all that you see out there
exists, isn't it exactly
the way it is in a poem?

Zal ik niet kunnen zwijgen over
je benen die me ontvangen met
open armen?
Ja.

Just as this island belongs to the gulls,
and the gulls to their cry
and their cry to the wind
and the wind to no one,
So is this island the gulls,
and the gulls are their cry
and their cry is the wind
and the wind no one’s.

Fingerprints On The Window by Herman de Coninck
I think that poetry is something like fingerprints
on the window behind which a child who can’t sleep
stands waiting for dawn. Earth generates mist;
sorrow, a kind of sigh. Clouds
are responsible for twenty-five kinds of light.
They actually hold it back. Back lighting.
It’s still too early to be now. But the rivers
are already leaving. They’ve heard the murmuring
from the silver factory of the sea.
Daughter beside me at the window. Loving her is
the easiest way to remember these things.
Birds hammer at the anvil of their call
all, all, all.

Winter

in mijn armen.
tegen me aan.
Ik hou van wat is. Jij van wat zou.
Hou jij van mij. Ik hou van jou
