NEGATIVE EMOTION IS UNCONSCIOUS, AND THEREFORE EVIL

It was during this year 1925 that I first became aware of ‘negative emotion’. When, one day, a pupil in the group in New York said to me apropos of my attitude to him, ‘You have an awful lot of negative emotion’, I was indignant and spoke to Orage about it. He said, ‘One of the things I have to thank Gurdjieff for (and Ouspensky for passing on the idea), is his teaching about negative or lower emotions. You yourself give way to negative emotion very readily. You are touchy, easily hurt, you harbour resentment, you cannot bear the least criticism; and almost everyone is the same. Negative emotion is unconscious, and therefore evil. This was a shock. I had never thought of my suffering as being ‘negative emotion’, but as a result of the ‘pressure on the spirit’, a result of the war, of ill-health brought on by life in the trenches. It was a surprise to realize that all this could be summed up in the expression ‘negative emotion’. The preparatory work I had done during my visit to the Prieuré enabled me now, months afterwards, to begin to face the fact of my negativity. But it is one thing to know with the mind, quite another to understand.

Orage said: ‘If we pass on our suffering to others it becomes “evil”, which, as Professor Saurat says in The Three Conventions, is “suffering apart from creation”. The saints are eaters of suffering; they consume it, transform it, and use it for the creation of being. When we wallow in self-pity, resentment, or unreasoning hatred of others, we become channels of suffering, we pass it on. Pity is divine, self-pity diabolical. We do not want to face the fact that we are often cluttered up with, the sentimentality of self-pity. Self-pity is a disease of the emotions; it is being sorry for oneself and blaming parents, conditions, and people for one’s own wretched personal state; self-pity is one of the manifestations of negative emotion that makes others dislike us, in which a hubris, an overweening conceit, often conceals itself in abject humility, a feeling of worm-likeness.’

‘But isn’t any suffering of use?’ I asked. ‘Yes, it can be. Only you must ask “What kind of suffering?” If we accept our suffering without resentment or complaint, we are, according to Gurdjieff, either paying off an old debt or laying up future merit.’

Gabo told me he had said to Gurdjieff that his stomach was mounting too much, he was eating too much fat. Gurdjieff gave him a look of scorn and said, “Since when egg tell something to chicken?” He spoke to Miss Gordon about a mistake he had made and said, “Even God make mistake—one big mistake he made."

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SENSATION AND FEELING

"What is the difference between sensation and feeling? Does everyone understand?

"Here I sit. Owing to my unaccustomed posture my muscles are unusually tensed. As a rule I have no sensation of my muscles in my established customary posture. Like everyone else I have a limited number of postures. But now I have taken a new, unusual posture. I have a sensation of my body, if not the whole of it, at least of some parts of my body, of warmth, of the circulation of blood. As I sit I feel that behind me there is a hot stove. Since it is warm behind and cold in front there is a great difference in the air, and so I never cease to sense myself thanks to this external contrasting difference of the air. Tonight I had rabbit for supper. Since the rabbit and the ‘huburchubur’ were very good I ate too much. I sense my stomach and my breathing is unusually heavy, I sense the whole time.

"Just now I have been preparing a dish with A. and have put it in the oven. While I was preparing it I remembered how my mother used to cook this dish. I remembered my mother and remembered certain moments connected with this. This memory roused a feeling in me. I feel these moments and my feeling does not leave me. Now I look at this lamp. When there was as yet no lighting in the study-house I thought that I needed precisely this kind of light. At that time I made a plan of what was required to obtain this kind of lighting. It was done, and this is the result. When the light was switched on and I saw it, I had a feeling of self-satisfaction; and the feeling which was aroused then continues—I feel this self-satisfaction. A moment ago I was walking from the bath-house. It was dark and as I could not see before me I hit a tree. I remembered by association how, on one occasion, I was walking in similar darkness and collided with a man. I received the impact of this collision in my chest, so I let fly and hit the unknown man who had pushed me. Later I found out that the man was not to blame; yet I hit him so hard that he lost several teeth. At the moment I had not thought that the man who had pushed me might be innocent, but later, when I had calmed down, I understood. When later I saw this innocent man in the street, with his disfigured face, I was so sorry for him that when I remember him now I experience the same pang of conscience I felt then. And now, when I hit a tree, this feeling came to life in me again. I again saw before me the unhappy smashed face of this good man.

"I have given you examples of six different inner states. Three of them relate to the moving center and three to the emotional center, in ordinary' language all six are called feelings. Yet in right classification those whose nature is connected with the moving center should be called sensations, and those whose nature comes from the emotional center — feelings. There are thousands of different sensations which are usually called feelings. They are all different, ‘their matter is different, their effects different and their causes different’."
