Siegfried Sassoon was English poet, writer, and soldier who won awards for bravery during World War One. But he spoke out and wrote about the horrors of the trenches.
Sassoon was motivated by patriotism when he joined the British Army at the start of the Great War. A broke arm (due to a training riding accident) prevented him from being immediately deployed to the front. By mid 1915 he was assigned to the 3rd Battalion as a Second Lieutenant. There he met and developed a friendship with fellow poet Robert Graves.
Sassoon poetry was greatly impacted by the realities of the war. Until then his poetry could be described as romantic and sweet. But it shifted towards revealing the ugly truths of the war. He was no longer swayed patriotic propaganda and wrote about rotting corpses, mangled limbs, cowardice and suicide.
Despite his personal feeling, or perhaps because of them, Sassoon performed bravely, once single-handely capturing of a German trench. In 1916 he was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry during a raid on the enemy's trenches. He continued while under fire bringing in wounded soldier.
Robert Graves described Sassoon suicidal in his bravery.
Later in 1916, while convalescing in a English hospital, Sassoon decided that he would not return to the front. Encouraged by leading passifist, Sassoon wrote “Finished with the War: A Soldier’s Declaration” where he declared:
“I am making this statement as an act of wilful defiance of military authority… I believe that the war upon which I entered as a war of defence and liberation has now become a war of aggression and conquest.”
The letter was sent to his commanding officer, the press, and even read aloud in the House of Commons. Rather than be court marshaled for treason, Sassoon was sent to a psychiatric hospital to be treated for shell-shock.
Sassoon was homosexual. In Britain is was a crime of gross indecency and could be punish with jail time and hard labor (as was Oscar Wilde’s 20 years earlier). Sassoon had a number of relationships with men. The most significant were with Welsh actor Ivor Norvello, English actor Glen Byam Shaw, and Stephen Tennant, a socialite known for his decadent lifestyle.
After 6 years together, Tennant ended the relationship. It was reported that Sassoon was devastated. Three year later, in 1931, Sassoon married Hester Gatty. She was 20 years younger. They had one son. By the end of WWII, they separated and lived apart.

In 2019, a research student discovered an unpublished poem by Sassoon. Sassoon written the night he had dinner with his soon to be lover Glen Byam Shaw. Sassoon was 39 and Shaw 20.
“Though you have left me, I’m not yet alone:
For what you were befriends the firelit room;
And what you said remains & is my own
To make a living gladness of my gloom
The firelight leaps & shows your empty chair
And all our harmonies of speech are stilled:
But you are with me in the voiceless air
My hands are empty, but my heart is filled.”
Sassoon died from stomach cancer in 1967.

Siegfried Sassoon recoloured
Siegfried Loraine Sassoon, MBE and MC, was born on the 8th of September 1886 to a wealthy family with a Jewish father (Alfred Sassoon) and an Anglo-Catholic mother (Theresa Thornycroft). Siegfried was the middle child of three sons, and was educated at Malborough College and Cambridge, studying primarily history. He ended up leaving Cambridge without a degree and spent the next few years playing cricket, writing poetry, and hunting.
Before WWI had even began, he already voiced his displeasure about it. However, he did end up signing up on the 4th of August 1914, the same day that Britain declared war on Germany. On the 29th of April 1915, he became a second lieutenant in the Welch Fusiliers, and when he was stationed in France he realised how horrific war really was. His poetry changed from romanticism to gritty realism. Sassoon's periods of duty on the Western Front were marked by exceptionally brave actions, including the single-handed capture of a German trench in the Hindenburg Line. Armed with grenades, he scattered sixty German soldiers.
In August 1916, Sassoon returned to England, suffering from gastric fever. He refused to go back to war afterwards, and wrote a letter to his commanding officer entitled "Finished With The War: A Soldier's Declaration", stating about how he condemned the government for taking the war too far. The letter ended up being read out in the House of Commons. Instead of being court martialed, Sassoon was sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital for shell shock. This is where he met Wilfred Owen.
Sassoon was an inspiration to Owen to create better poetry, and Sassoon assisted in annotating and editing one of Owen's most famous poems, "Anthem for the Doomed Youth". It was astoundingly clear how much Owen looked up to Sassoon as a mentor, but also loved him in a romantic way. Sassoon warned Owen not to go back to war, stating that he would stab him in the leg if he tried, but Owen went back to the front lines anyways. Wilfred Owen was killed in action exactly a week before Armistice Day, shot by a German machine gunner.
Sassoon also ended up returning to war eventually, promoted to lieutenant. Almost immediately after being promoted, he was shot in the head by friendly fire, a friendly British soldier believing he was a German soldier in their trench. However, he survived the gunshot, and spent the remainder of the war back in Britain, recovering. He ended up being promoted to acting captain. After the war, Sassoon was instrumental in bringing Owen's work to the attention of a wider audience.
Sassoon continued to write poetry and prose once the war had ended. He had affairs with many men, such as William Atkin, Ivor Novello, and Stephen Tennant. In September 1931, he married Hester Gatty and they had a son, George Sassoon, together. Sassoon seperated from his wife in 1945.
Sassoon was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1951 New Year Honours, and died of stomach cancer on the 1st of September, 1967, a week before his 67th birthday. He is buried at St Andrew's Church, Mells, Somerset.

Stephen Tennant is Calam Lynch, he’s the one asking about his hair and the one in the scene where he dances with Kate Phillips who plays Hester Gatty. I think the guy he’s dancing with is Matthew Tennyson who plays Wilfred Owen who I think is supposed to be the man he actúa loves but never gets with because he dies on the war. His poem is the one that’s read in the scene where he cries that people loved, the rest are all Sassoon’s poems I believe. But I could be wrong because all these actors look the same to me 😭
Ya let’s see the movie lmao!

Siegfried Sassoon
Siegfried Sassoon was born on 8 September 1886 in Kent. His father was part of a Jewish merchant family, originally from Iran and India, and his mother part of the artistic Thorneycroft family. Sassoon studied at Cambridge University but left without a degree. He then lived the life of a country gentleman, hunting and playing cricket while also publishing small volumes of poetry.
In May 1915, Sassoon was commissioned into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and went to France. He impressed many with his bravery in the front line and was given the nickname 'Mad Jack' for his near-suicidal exploits. He was decorated twice. His brother Hamo was killed in November 1915 at Gallipoli.
In the summer of 1916, Sassoon was sent to England to recover from fever. He went back to the front, but was wounded in April 1917 and returned home. Meetings with several prominent pacifists, including Bertrand Russell, had reinforced his growing disillusionment with the war and in June 1917 he wrote a letter that was published in the Times in which he said that the war was being deliberately and unnecessarily prolonged by the government. As a decorated war hero and published poet, this caused public outrage. It was only his friend and fellow poet, Robert Graves, who prevented him from being court-martialled by convincing the authorities that Sassoon had shell-shock. He was sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh for treatment. Here he met, and greatly influenced, Wilfred Owen. Both men returned to the front where Owen was killed in 1918. Sassoon was posted to Palestine and then returned to France, where he was again wounded, spending the remainder of the war in England. Many of his war poems were published in 'The Old Huntsman' (1917) and 'Counter-Attack' (1918).
After the war Sassoon spent a brief period as literary editor of the Daily Herald before going to the United States, travelling the length and breadth of the country on a speaking tour. He then started writing the near-autobiographical novel 'Memoirs of a Fox-hunting Man' (1928). It was an immediate success, and was followed by others including 'Memoirs of an Infantry Officer' (1930) and 'Sherston's Progress' (1936). Sassoon had a number of homosexual affairs but in 1933 surprised many of his friends by marrying Hester Gatty. They had a son, George, but the marriage broke down after World War Two.
He continued to write both prose and poetry. In 1957, he was received into the Catholic church. He died on 1 September 1967.

Hi I've recently discovered Siegfried Sassoon's poetry and I love him so much, and I just found out that him and Stephen Tennant were like a thing, but ended badly(???) And can't find out anything about their relationship at all, so I was wondering if you could elaborate on it, if its not too much trouble!!! Love your blog 🌟
First of all, I’m really excited that you got into Siegfried😊 And I’m glad you enjoy my blog.
Siegfried was indeed in a relationship with Stephen Tennantand Siegfried’s biographer Jean Moorcroft Wilson called Stephen “the mostconsuming love of Sassoon’s life, taking him back to his first great passionfor David Thomas” (Siegfried was writing Memoirsof a Fox-Hunting Man when he met Stephen, so that’s where the comparisoncomes from).
Their meeting in 1927 was arranged by the Sitwells, who werebasically Siegfried’s frenemies. At the time, Siegfried was in a relationshipwith Glen Byam Shaw, but Glen happened to find himself a girlfriend, so theystarted their new relationships while remaining lifelong friends. Stephen wasone of the Bright Young Things and while Siegfried wasn’t too keen on theirantics, he felt that Stephen was different from the others but Wilson pointsout that he couldn’t “imagine Stephen as anything but young”.
Stephen suffered from tuberculosis and Siegfried took careof him, travelling with him to Germany for convalescence. Siegfried often sawhimself as the protector in his relationships with friends and partners, but healso complained of Stephen’s possessiveness, idleness and lethargy. Towards theend of 1930, Stephen repeatedly asked Siegfried to leave his house and then goback, which heralded the end of their relationship. In 1931 Siegfried attempteda reconciliation with the help of their mutual friend Rosamond Lehmann butStephen said he didn’t want to see him again because Siegfried came to hishouse unannounced and walked in on him without make-up.
Stephen’s rejection was the last straw and Siegfried felt itwas time to move on. In 1933 he met Hester Gatty, whom he married in 1934.
Essentially, Siegfried and Stephen were both difficultpeople to live with and both tended to drive people away. But Siegfried toldStephen that he was “the person [he’s] loved most in [his] life”.
[Note that this is all from Siegfried’s point of view as I’venever read any biography of Stephen.]

NFL rushing leader Gurley inactive as Rams rest starters
December 31, 2017  (AP)(STL.News) —NFL rushing leader Todd Gurley of the Los Angeles Rams is inactive for Sunday’s home regular-season finale against the San Francisco 49ers.
Gurley will finish the regular season with 1,305 yards rushing. Also resting for the playoffs are center John Sullivan, left tackle Andrew Whitworth and defensive tackle Aaron Donald.
The Rams clinched the NFC West title last weekend and first-year coach Sean McVay is opting to rest several of his stars. Quarterback Jared Goff is expected to get the day off but is active as the backup to Sean Mannion, who will make his first career start.
Carolina running back Jonathan Stewart is inactive for the first time this season against Atlanta. Stewart had seen a diminished role the past two weeks. He had only seven carries for 19 yards in last week’s win over Tampa Bay, but was still listed as the Panthers’ starter. Stewart’s exit leaves Christian McCaffrey as the probable starter.
Jacksonville is locked in as the third seed in the AFC, but is sitting only two starters against Tennessee: left tackle Cam Robinson, who left last week’s game with an abdominal strain, and receiver Marqise Lee (ankle).
Derrick Henry is getting the first start of his two-year NFL career with DeMarco Murray scratched for the first time since joining the Titans. Murray is out with an injured right knee.
Denver running back Jamaal Charles will sit out against Kansas City, his former team. Charles was a four-time Pro Bowler with the Chiefs, but never found a groove with the Broncos this season. His past month reads like this: No carries in two games, inactive for two games.
Rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes will start for Kansas City in place of Alex Smith. Inactives for Sunday’s late games:
