maybe if i don't think about ratld as "southeast asian representation" or whatever i might actually be able to tolerate it
#ratld#that's a big IF#casting choices & cherrypicking of aesthetics from different cultures aside the messaging was not handled well#namaari's character is just ??? to me#did she actually really do anything to earn raya's trust?? her finger was literally pressing on the trigger#and the attempt to escape w the gem pieces after everyone else got druunified - what was that supposed to accomplish??#how was that action supposed to be interpreted by the audience??#don't get me wrong i think she had a lot of potential but she was way underdeveloped#actually all of them were#is it bc this wasn't a musical & we didn't get the shitload of exposition we'd normally get?? bc i'd rather have the exposition#and i like musicals anyway so#the nicest thing i can say about the movie rn is the animation was nice#i liked the fights and the lighting in some scenes went off#i'm sure the crew worked hard but disney as a mega-corporation can kiss my southeast asian ass#anyway support southeast asian creatives & southeast asian stories#ps i was so detached from the movie i couldn't even really feel raya/namaari until i saw an edit set to dati by sam c & tippy ds#now a ratld modern filipino au lives rent-free in my head#hey we should just do that fuck disney raya belongs to the southeast asians now#calemonsito notes
