Visual culture-Making Histories-what is the difference between a historical fact and something that happened in the past? Why some facts about the past are recorded and remembered (eg. in exhibitions, archives and books) and others not considered worthy of committing to memory?

The Difference between History and something that happened in the past is, History refers to recorded fact about the happenings of the past. While the past refers to events that have happened not too long ago. History is known only through books where no living person would have been alive to witness it. More recent events would just be past events they could become hidstory but not yet. Not all of the past is remembered in history books, some is thought not worth committing to. There is a select number of people who write down our history. It is up to them what they think counts as history and what is worth writing down, everyone has their biases, based on cultural norms, their status and personal life. This bias will mean certain groups and topics are more often talked about than others. Although this has been improving in more resent generation’s, oppressed minorities e.g. Women/racial minorities and more mundane topics about everyday life. Would have been looked over in writing down these books with them being thought of as inconsequential. When you look back on history books you will only be seeing half the story.
