All Mer learn how to crawl on the beaches. Because sun bathing is such an important aspect of Mer pods, young Mer learn to crawl rather quick.

Not per se by a push from their parents, but while the parents enjoy a good bake, the little rascals start squirming and rolling around, flopping their little tails. Soon enough, they’ll copy what they’ve seen from their parents and start to develop those arm muscles ;3

Sighing softly, Jotaro lay on his back, the sand warm on his skin and the sun calmly shining down, slowly evaporating the water sticking to his form, allowing his skin to properly absorb the salt.

His peace and quiet was short lived however, as grabby hands started to poke and prod at his side.

“Jolyne…” Sighing softly, Jotaro opened an eye, looking at his daughter which was to his right, only to flinch as she suddenly pinched him. “Ow, don’t do that.” He huffed, lifting her little hand away, to which the pup blinked up at her father, surprised to be grabbed before she frowned.

Seeing the angry little face, Jotaro let go of her wrist, grunting as he rolled onto his side, his tail lifting up to curl around his daughter, sand sticking to the underside.

“What is it?” He hummed, resting his head on his hand as he raised an eyebrow, watching the little girl almost seem to try and telepathically tell him what it was - which didn’t help of course as he just saw an angry pout and nothing more.

Seeing her dad’s lack of reaction, Jolyne babbled in frustration, her tail angrily flopping.

She’d gotten to that stage where she just learned how to swim on her own for short distances, talking not really ingrained yet as she instead babbled and clicked nonsense.

Tightening his tail around her a bit, Jotaro almost created a sort of play pen, watching lazily as the small Mer grabbed onto his scales, little claws grazing the strong scales, harmless.

It took a little bit, but the black-tailed Mer then decided to reach out, intending to lift his daughter onto his chest so that she’d stay still and be able to absorb the salt too - much needed if she wanted her skin to thicken and harden.

Yet before he could, he watched as she rolled onto her stomach, little chubby arms reaching out and grabbing onto his tail, his head lifting from his hand in surprise as he watched Jolyne grunt, pulling herself towards his tail, where she then proceeded to bite down, starting to drool onto his tail as she used the scales as a pacifier.

Yet for Jotaro, he quickly looked around, catching his mother’s gaze.

No words were necessary for Holly to understand what just happened. Instantly, a smile beamed onto her face and Jotaro couldn’t help the flutter in his chest, the corners of his mouth lifting up as he looked back to his daughter, purposefully moving his tail out from under her, shifting it just a small distance away.

Letting out an angry little noise, Jolyne began swinging her hands, flopping her tail as she tried to get herself back towards his tail.

It was awkward and her arms lacked the strength, but Jotaro didn’t care. She was trying.

Shifting to sit up, he reached out and lifted her tail, taking the weight over from her, to which the small girl instantly started mowing her arms, trying to wheel herself forward now that it was no longer as heavy.

Obliging, Jotaro watched his daughter ‘crawl’ on her hands towards the end of his tail, a proper smile forming on his face as pride took over.

Pups weren’t usually this quick. Yet here she was, practically crawling already.

A little cheer from his right caught his attention as he saw his mother happily clapping, the both of them watching Jolyne grab hold of his scales once more, content to just nibble and teeth as if it was the most normal of moments.

Yet for Jotaro, it would forever be a memory ingrained in his brain.

After all, this was his little girl.

Who are the members of mertaro's pod and who are the "merpups"?

anyway imagine them finding y/n's place a safe spot for them to hang out on land so they frequently visit too and sometimes the whole pod gathers on y/n's yard to bask and rest, huddled like sleeping seals 😂

The pod members are basically the Joestar family + some friends/jobros. I’m not entirely sure yet. As of currently, Joseph is still the leader

The ones I’ve definitely written into the pod are of course the Joestar family (Dio was included tho he’s long gone because evil mf evil) + anyone who ‘married’ into the pod so, Lisa Lisa (tho she was already there of course because shenanigans), Suzie Q, sadao, Tomoko etc. + Then Okuyasu and Keicho, Speedwagon, Smokey.

[George and his wife were of course also in the pod, though they’ve passed away from old age by this point.]

While Jonathan was a little more reserved when it came to pod members (friends absolutely, but when it came to making them actual members a little more careful thanks to the history of betrayal with Dio), Joseph - now that he is the current Patriarch - is a lot more prone to adopting stragglers.

Second question: The Mer pups are from the mertaro dad au. Which is an au within an au because why not make it difficult 😌

In this au, Jotaro has basically adopted Josuke, Giorno (and depending on the fic also Okuyasu), raising them as his own alongside Jolyne. I still intend to expand on this au and the backstory of how this all came to be. But yes, when referring to merpups not in general, it is most likely referring to this au.

As for the little yard visit, that is only possible if you have a house at the beach, after all most Mer aren’t insane enough to go on land - not without *very* good reason (for this au, Mer are elusive, it’s why humans don’t have a lot of information on them and why seeing a Mer is seen as a token of good luck :3).

If you DO have a (secluded) house at the beach tho, the pod will absolutely appreciate a safe place to sunbathe and will probably return ❤️❤️

I’ve talked about him before but never much in detail.

Jonathan absolutely is in the Mer au. He was the pod patriarch before Joseph - and George (sr.) was the patriarch before him.

Because Mer live longer than us humans, Jonathan was around long enough to see Joseph grow up strong enough to become patriarch.

If not by appearance - because they’re too far away - that’s how researchers can tell which member is younger or older, given the old/senior Mer tend to stay closer to the shore of the beach when basking.

Oh my dear, hugging/cuddling is a staple of Mer culture

To be fair, it is more reserved for family/mates. So it’s not like they’ll just cuddle with anyone in the pod. But no yeah, every night, mates roll up together, using their tails as each other’s pillows, trapping each other in, wrapping them with each other etc.

Jotaro absolutely partakes in this but only with his mate and with the pups. Not just his own, just all pups.

They love him and who doesn’t want to be in the protection of the coolest and strongest member of the pod! (Their words)

They love when he curls his tail so that they can lay between it. That mostly happens when sunbathing on the beach. In the water, it’s more following him around given Jotaro is quite active.

But yeah no, if you refuse to cuddle with him, he’ll think something is seriously wrong. After all, you are his mate and it’s only normal!

You would think and it kind of does, but the issue is the joint of the tail.

Mer get their tail joint from the animal their tail is modelled after. In other words, mammals have up down, fish/sharks have side to side.

Jotaro is one of those side to side, with him being a bull shark.

He can try to use it like a snake, but - while all Mer have some snake in them - their muscles aren’t built like a snake’s are. So even if he tried, it would be less going forward and more uselessly flopping his tail back and forth.

Can he do some boosts? Yes, but Mer tails aren’t made for putting their full weight on. So that is also very limited.

The only thing they can try is to move like seals. Just bounce. But Mer also don’t have the blubber that seals and such do, so that is also not truly an option xD

The tail is always moving when he crawls though. It just helps with balance and yes, to take some struggle off his arms. But not too much.

In other words, unsurprisingly, they are mainly water creatures. (With a love for sunbathing on the sandy beach)

Mer in general don’t wear clothing or many accessories (if any) because that negates their streamlined form and makes swimming harder.

Mer give birth like sharks, basically. Female has an egg inside her which gets fertilised by the male. The egg hatches inside the womb and there is a live birth.

However, because this is not mammal reproduction, Mer don’t have/need milk glands. The babies live off blood and ground up food like that. Fed by their parents by going up to the surface to eat.

So why do Mer still have boobs? Because aesthetic :)

For the first few months of life, baby Mer can’t breathe above water either.

Their lungs need time to get used to.

When a baby is born, the first thing the parents do is open up the gills to let the little one breathe. But from then on it’s carrying time. More akin to a human baby.

Learning to swim is a process, but one of the easiest to get.

After a lot of practice, coaxing and effort, the baby will learn to breathe air as well. They’ll learn how to switch from gills to lungs and those types of things!

In the water? Incredibly fast. His and the tails of other Mer are very big compared to their body, making for a very powerful thrust through the water. Pair that with his lottery-like genes and he’s out-swimming most boats. It’s not sailfish speed, but picture how fast a killer whale or dolphin can go. And most likely add a bit more to that. Depending on the Mer.

On land? Unfortunately that massive tail that helps him so well in the water really works against him. You can have muscles all you like, dragging that is no joke. So unfortunately on land, he is no faster than walking pace. And that’s when he really tries. Just ‘normal’ drag speed for him is about half that.

Does mertaro need to be in water when he's on land? And even if he doesn't need it to survive does he at least prefer it?

He does not!

Mer in this au can go without water for quite a while. Their skin is very thick and therefore absorbs a lot of water and holds it for a long time. It’s only when that water is completely evaporated that they really need to get back in the water.

When they completely dry out, scales start to crack a bit and movement starts to hurt. You know how it is when you get a sunburn? That every pull on your skin is painful? Yeah that. So could they technically survive without water? Yes to a certain extent. But water is always preferred. Just blast him with a hose for a minute and he’s ready to go for a few hours again.

As for whether he prefers it? Yes. Always. It’s hard to move on land (though Mer do it a lot, they love basking in the sun on the beach. The most pictures researchers have gotten of Mer are of those where an entire pod is sunbathing) and while he can survive for a while, it gets uncomfortable after some time.

Hope that cleared some stuff up! But again, no need to be difficult with a tub. You can just splash him with a hose for a while until his skin has reabsorbed all the water 😌

And oh trust me, Jotaro will absolutely smack Jolyne if she bites too hard (smack = he’ll give her a firm tap on the tail to get her to stop). There’s a big difference between teething and biting and the man’s not inclined to have a scar from his mischievous pup XD

After all, they teeth on their parents/family members until all teeth have come in, so it can get a bit dangerous at some point xD

I’m also thinking about whether Mer pups will have milk teeth or not (can’t remember if I’ve already discussed it). I’m thinking yes. Which would mean the teeth that babies get are a little more blunt and then they switch them out at 4-6 years old for actual sharp teeth. For which they’d also start teething on their parent’s fins

So yeah, maybe tiny bite mark scars aren’t that uncommon xD

They speak their own language!

Being underwater, sound as we humans speak it doesn’t travel very well, so their speech sounds more akin to whales!

However, because they do also dwell above land (they have lungs after all), their vocal chords can mix to make more human-esque sounds. They could absolutely learn to speak our languages, but it will always sound strange, due to the fact that their vocal chords are basically made for both under- and above water use.

Basically, Mer have two different languages even within their own community. Those used above and those used below water

To me personally, he just has it like normal

I’m torn on whether it’s natural (think of how bears have fur but it doesn’t grow beyond a certain point) or if it is indeed something that needs to be cut.

Is eating him seafood or cannibalism? Honestly I think that’s probably a big point of debate in the scientific world. Mer are their own animal species. Think of it like primates. Not really standard food. Eating Mer certainly won’t be cannibalism, given the difference in species, but is it ethical? Given their intelligence: no.

Is his ass thick? No. He doesn’t have an ass. His tail’s base however is large because of the size of his tail and muscle inside it

If he bites you will you turn into a Mer or die? They’re not werewolves, alas 😂. So no, you won’t turn. Will you die? Depends. His mouth is the size of a human, so it’s not like a shark bite. He’d have to bite a lot of times for you to die of say blood loss. Is it sanitary? No. So infections are possible
