[41/200] Hikone Castle (2021-10-02) We're heading towards Fukui prefecture this time, using the 2021 Aki no Norihodai discount ticket! This is actually my second time in Hikone, but the castle keeps were temporarily closed due to the emerging CoVID-19 situation last time. With the State of Emergency having officially ended recently, we can finally check this one off! What's more is that we're finally blessed with a sunny weekend, and I think I did a pretty good job at capturing this October's selection of castles so please look forward to my upcoming albums! Back in 2013-2014, I studied at Kumamoto University and Kumamon's popularity was at its peak. Even now, you'll find Kumamon around almost every single corner in Japan. Though seriously, Hikonyan the cat samurai is the #1 mascot in my books. Just look at him! Too adorable. But I digress. Similar to Azuchi Castle, this Castle used to be directly on Lake Biwa's shoreline. Originally, this area was protected by a different castle on top of the mountain: Sawayama Castle. However, this castle fell to the Ii clan after the Battle of Sekigahara. Ii Naomasa then strategically relocated to Hikone Castle, and the castle remained until the present day. This castle was spared from the One Castle Per Province Decree simply because the Emperor was visiting the area and directly requested for it to stay. Later on, it was also not bombed during World War II as the war had ended before the scheduled airstrike.
