she finally pulled up to the front of the farm, the slightly open window forcing you to smell the various animals that were loitering around outside of the barn next to the rustic-styled house. the exposed white wood of the front porch, multi-coloured chicken wind chime made of bamboo hung off the plinth of the patio, making small clinking noises from the slight wind that gathered up the dust of the grain. all these elements together started to remind you that you were far from your own home comforts of proper electricity and pleasant smells.

you opened your door, being careful not to step in the mud that was right under your feet, your stiletto heel digging into the soft ground. walking around to the back of the car, you opened the trunk, taking out your louis vuitton suitcase, stopping in your tracks when you realised you didn’t want to put it on the muddy ground. “have you got something you can take these in on?” you questioned, your sister looking at you in disbelief.

it was honestly like you’d gone through a time machine back to the 1900’s, your sister didn’t even have a TV in the place, no wi-fi or good working signal. Negan followed up behind you, almost denting your case with how harshly he’d placed it near the staircase. “jeez, be careful with that would you!” you exclaimed, picking it back up off the ground, starting to make your way up the stairs, heels making it a difficult feat. Liam sat in his study, wrapping up some paperwork before his next meeting when there was a knock on the door. “Come in.”

Bastien entered the room and shut the door behind him. “Sir, Lord Neville is demanding an audience with you. Immediately.”

Liam held up a hand, silencing him. “I’m sure you do, Lord Neville. Unfortunately, I am on my way to a very important meeting, so I am unable to sit with you right now. Please see my assistant on your way out, and she will be happy to book you for my next available appointment.” 

“With all due respect Your Majesty, that simply won’t do. It won’t take long, perhaps I could walk with you to your next meeting?”

Liam internally rolled his eyes at the suggestion. He knew just how to stroke his ego to get him to back down. “Lord Neville, as one of our most valued members of court, I couldn’t possibly do you the disservice of giving you anything but my full attention on what I’m sure is a crucial matter. That is all I would be doing if I allowed you to continue at this time. I will make sure that my staff adjust the schedule to provide us enough time to examine the issue thoroughly. Please send me any documentation as soon as possible so that I may review it before our meeting. That way, we can hit the ground running when we do meet.”

Neville stood tall, a smug expression quickly spreading across his face. “Very well, Your Majesty. I appreciate your assistance in the matter. I will leave the documentation with your assistant.” He bowed, and Liam nodded in response before exiting the area and moving on to his next meeting. 

“If I may say sir, the way you handled that situation was truly masterful.” Bastien commented as they walked through the palace. 

Liam chuckled and patted his security guard on the back. “All in a day's work, my friend. Everything is in place for this afternoon, I trust? I will have no disruptions for the remainder of the day?”

“Yes Your Majesty, the staff has been fully alerted that you will be unavailable. I will be at the door to ensure that you are not bothered.” Bastien replied. 

Once they arrived at their destination, Liam crossed the threshold and closed the door behind him. He was the last to arrive, so the sound of the door caught the attention of those that had already gathered.

Liam couldn't help but laugh at his daughter’s enthusiasm as he approached his wife, who was standing at the table making the final preparations for their afternoon project. “Hello, beautiful.” He leaned down and placed a lingering kiss on Riley’s lips. 

“Hey handsome. You made it right on time. I’m impressed.” She teased. 

“I wouldn’t miss this for anything in the world. No matter how hard Neville tried.” 

“Neville, yuck!” Eleanor chimed in, causing both of her parents to burst out laughing. 

Riley turned her attention back to her husband. “Alright, you go get changed. I don’t want you ruining your fancy king clothes with egg dye.”

Liam kissed his wife and daughter before going into the bedroom to put on some more casual clothes. He returned unnoticed as Riley explained the egg dying process to Eleanor. He stood for a moment and watched them, his girls, his world. He couldn’t help the smile that quickly spread across his face at the sight. 

“Daddy, come on, we can’t start without you!” Eleanor called out to him from the other side of the room, breaking him from his thoughts. 

He returned to the table and stood between his girls. “Alright, I’m here. Where do we begin?” 

Not only was this Eleanor’s first time decorating Easter eggs, but Liam’s too. He was told that as a Prince, there were more productive ways for him to spend his time. It was just one of the many childhood experiences being royalty simply didn’t allow for. He was so happy, not just to have this experience for himself, but to share it with his daughter. Another way to give her the childhood he never had, but always wanted.

Once Riley explained the process, they got to work; since she was the seasoned professional, she let Eleanor and Liam take the lead and do most of the work. She marveled in the similarities in their gestures, the concentration on their faces as they placed their white eggs in the dye, and the excitement when it would come out dyed a bright color. At one point, Riley couldn’t help but laugh when they pulled out their eggs at the same time, and looked up at her with identical expressions of joy, showing off their creations. 

They had gotten down to the last egg, Liam turned to Eleanor, “Ok Princess, we’ve got one left. You get to pick the color.”

A thoughtful expression overtook Eleanor’s face as she surveyed the colors that surrounded her before turning to her parents and confidently announcing her decision. “Teal.”

Riley and Liam locked eyes and shared a confused expression. There was no teal, they had only prepared basic colors, blue, green, yellow, pink, and purple. “Baby girl, we don’t have teal. These are the only colors we have.” Riley explained. 

Eleanor’s lip started to quiver as her arms went across her chest. “I want teal. Please.” Her parents had been teaching her the importance of manners, so she figured if she said please, they had to give her what she wanted. 

They both knew what that lip quiver meant, they were going to need to move quickly to avoid a total meltdown. Liam approached the princess and started rubbing her back to keep her calm. “It’s alright Eleanor. Why don’t you tell me why you want a teal egg so badly?”

“It’s my favorite color.” She looked up at her father, a pleading expression etched in her face. Her eyes glistening with unshed tears. 

There was no question that Eleanor had the King wrapped around her finger, and when she looked at him like that, there was absolutely no way he could deny her. “Alright, let me go talk to mommy and see what we can do for you.” He kissed her on her cheek and returned to his wife. “Riley, there must be something we can do. I can send someone to get teal coloring. We have unlimited resources at our disposal, there must be some way we can make this happen for her.” 

Riley shook her head and rolled her eyes. “Man, you really are a sucker when it comes to her. Aren’t you.” 

“For both of my girls, actually.” He lifted her hand to his lips and brushed them gently across her knuckles, while giving her a hopeful expression. 

She sighed deeply, as much as she tried to fight it, she was also a sucker for her family. “Alright, I guess I can try to mix the blue and green together. Maybe I can get the right ratio to make a teal dye.” 

Liam turned to Eleanor and gave her a thumbs up, she clapped her hands and cheered in response. Riley got to work carefully mixing the two dyes into a third cup, occasionally dipping a piece of paper in to test the color. She smiled to herself when the fourth test paper emerged from the cup. Mission accomplished. “Did somebody want to make a teal egg?”

“Me me me!” Eleanor raised her hand and jumped up and down in her seat. 

Riley placed the cup in front of Eleanor and handed her the egg. The pair worked together to color the final egg to the princess’s exact specifications. 

Liam watched as the two of them completed their family project. His heart was so full at that moment that he felt weak in the knees. He reached behind him and laid his palms against the kitchen island to steady himself. He stood there as his wife, the love of his life, sat with his daughter creating memories in their home. In that moment, he wasn’t a King, he was the luckiest man in the world. 

With the help of her mother, Eleanor pulled the egg from the dye, her smile growing exponentially as she proudly looked up at her father to show off her work. “Daddy, we did it! It’s teal!”

Liam chuckled at the sight in front of him. “I think it’s the most beautiful egg I have ever seen, Princess.”

Riley looked up and noticed Liam’s expression before leaning down to Eleanor. “Hey sweets, why don’t you go wash up for dinner while I put all of this away.” Her daughter looked up and nodded before rushing down the hall. Riley approached Liam and put a hand on his shoulder. “Hey, are you alright?”

“Love, I can honestly tell you I have never been better.” He placed a hand on her cheek. “Do you remember our first date? During the social season?” She nodded. “You asked me what my dream was, and I told you I wanted a real family, one that was close and listened to each other.” He paused, staring deeply into her eyes. “I have that, because of you Riley. You’ve made my dream, my heart’s desire, come true. Going into my social season, I had all but given up on falling in love, and assumed I would simply marry for duty. Then you uprooted your whole life to give me a chance at happiness. I will never be able to tell you how truly grateful I am for all that you have given me.” He placed a lingering kiss on her lips.

“Liam, I did it for me too. That night in New York, I had never felt like that before. I was not that girl, the one that drops everything to fly around the world for a boy I just met, but I knew there was something there that was worth exploring.” She wrapped her arms around his neck. 

“Really?”

Riley laughed gently. “I meant every word.” She leaned in to kiss him, and he pulled her close. 

They pulled apart just as Eleanor bounded back into the room. She ran straight for her parents and jumped into Liam’s arms. He held her against one side, and pulled Riley into the other. He was sure that life couldn’t get better than that very moment.

I’ll start this journal with an entry. I met a griffon like spirit who wished to be my “spirit guide” he introduced himself as Whether. He was a shining blue griffon who claimed to exist outside the multiverse. He took me on a guided mediation sort of trial where I reality shifted through his help, the exercise was as follows.

“Imagine a white portal or door with one thing changed (you dr) and focus on it. Step through visualize it then imagine a blue door back to here and take that thing with you and thrust it through that's how you shift this reality to your liking”

He gave me instruction for a sigil for him.

So I start off this log with the fact that I reality shifted in my sleep. I visited a whole world where your dress code determined who you were and I was essentially rebelling against the order by choosing to dress emo with a few others. That and also getting wrapped up in a cult like religion at the same time. The pacing was really strange because it was a dream and I don't remember it fully but it was the second time I "fully” shifted by technicalities sake. The second time in my sleep as well. I have a long history with the emo fashion of going in and out of it so this shift isn't completely out of place for me. But the environment and choices of it were quite strange.

The next shift was super brief I was in the shower and met a cat humanoid person who was surprised and shocked to see me because "humans are long since extinct" she looked like one of those cats from the cgi movie Cats that recently came out. She made note of water falling on place across me that seemed out of nowhere when in reality I was shiting from the shower. This shift was different from others because I was shifting my whole person there appearing like physical rather then as a spirit coconcious with myself previously as I normally do. The shift of this reality basically boiled down to "you don't belong here" so I quickly left. 

I visited Z again. I’ll just tell you the character’s name. He goes by Zone. He's my fictional character. I was in his home. He took me to a new location in his home that I recently established in my writing. A room with the number 7 on the door frame. Inside it he showed me a box with the decapitated head of his former companion. I was spooked. I knew he was going to keep some kind of momento from when CH his friend eventually dies in the stories I write about the two, leaving Zone heartbroken and alone but the whole decapitated head thing was wild and something I never would've written or even come up with. He confronted me about being “his writer” on earth C which is what I call this reality that we are currently staying in.

Last shift was at 2 in the morning. It was a fictional universe. I was ages between 11-13. I slit my wrist. I was in the Twilight universe and Alice bit me and fully fed off the blood from my wrist unable to control herself. This universe was mildly scripted using parameters in my mind which I hastily did as soon as I saw I was headed there. This has to do with some stuff from the past when I was skiso which is the only reason it was scripted at all. Basically in this universe around 11-13 I don’t know quite young, I turned into a vampire. Carlile offered to adopt me admitting he had never taken one so young before. He told me we would have to fake my death and separate me from my adopted parents (I’m adopted in our reality as well) which I was upset about asking for one more day with them. He told me no, that I'm a vampire I couldn't do that. He told me as a vampire I would no longer need food or drink and I couldn't consume it and he knew that that would be hard for me. He seemed familiar with me. I had reality shifted here before once with within a dream, and I think that’s why the Cullens knew me here. Alice apologized for being unable to control herself. Say what you want about Twilight as a work of fiction but the world building in those books is insane. 

Still not a fan of reality shifting to fiction but the multiverse seems to want to take me to fictional realities. I’m not a fan of the atheistic views of chaos magick. But pop culture magick holds a strong horse. The multiverse wants me to value this. It wants me to see this. It wants me to view these things as valuable. So I’m stuck here and I have to. I didn't intend to go to the Twilight universe. Where Bella was nowhere to be seen. But I quickly put in some scripts aka some manifestations as I saw that I was going there. I'm a fan of twilight in fact I'm re-reading the first book as I write this but I digress.

Overall lately I've been struggling with what I call "reality sickness". Reality sickness is basically when you become obsessed with the aspects of reality shifting and courses of your actions in correlation to reality shifting or generally get confused about realities or start to experience unreality due to reality shifting. Ie, overthinking actions because of how they will change timelines, experiencing general unreality and so on. I think this can be a general effect of shifting too much and as someone who's been doing it every other day unreality is generally something I'm starting to suffer from. 

I'm on antipsychotics though and they tend to keep me grounded but this unreality still poses a danger to anyone less fortunate or not on any meds. It's also why most witches suggest you do grounding. I can handle it but just know it's a struggle and it's there. I don’t feel “real” anymore and reality shifting has become almost like an obsession for me. So much so that I’ve taken a break from other forms of magick which have suited me better over the years. I don’t reality shift to escape. I reality shift to explore.

I’m a magician because I want freedom. That’s why I do magick. I want exploration, power, and excitement. Traveling is something that’s always caught my eye. But this isn’t doctor who. We’re not gifted with unlimited funds or the ability to go anywhere we desire. So reality shifting in many ways is a way to quench that thirst of mine. Reality will always be stranger then fiction. But I want it stated clear and strong right here and now on thick white and black paper, that I do not reality shift to escape.

Biography: (tw: abandonment, verbal abuse mention, implied drug use) 

It was a story of star crossed lovers that led to the birth of Marcelline and soon after the beginning of her mothers downward spiral. Her mother was still only seventeen when she left the water with the help of a warlock that made her the ring giving her the ability to do so. A trip meant to be a coming of age adventure that led to her moving back to the water to settle down ended up being a string of rebellious actions. She fell in love with the man who gave her the ring and he fell for her. They were convinced they would find a way to make things work and thus when Marc came along the two were bright eyed and happy as clams.

The happiness did not last long for the two as her mothers parents came to find her once a year had passed without any word from her. They were irate at the situation they came upon and at first they intended to leave Marc to be raised by witches but her affinity for water quickly became clear and they fell in love with the small baby. Each time Marc met the water she transformed into her true form. She could bring water to her from a running source and it was clear that she was made to be a part of the world beneath the waves. Forcing their daughter and granddaughter back into the sea they took away the ability for them to leave and thus took Marc from any chance of a father.

Marc’s mother was only a child herself and took the blow hard. She blamed baby Marc for ruining her chances at a happy life and sunk into a deep depression. In the beginning of her life Marc had grandparents to raise her but the two were both taken from her far too soon and it was once again just she and her mother. A mother who now a few years later had no hope for returning to the man she loved and had instead turned to dangerous vices. Ones that could easily have killed someone of mermaid heritage should they make any mistakes. Vices that also led to her once again getting a ring to live on land. A ring which left Marc to raise herself when her mother disappeared for weeks at a time.

The saving grace in Marc’s life also came at a young age when she met Atlas, the boy who would eventually become the only family she had. Of course at first they were merely playmates in her very young years but when her mom started to leave the then eight year old became even closer to Atlas and his family. It was never odd to them that she nearly lived in their home because nobody really knew the things Marc suffered through. The verbal abuse from her mother paired with the abandonment that seemed to be even more common still was something that she kept quiet. After all why would she tell someone she wanted to impress that she was suffering.

And suffer she did spending her formative years unable to understand the people around her and growing more and more introverted along the way. She learned to lie and steal in order to care for herself and the methods she used only stayed as tame as they did due to her best friend. Along the way Atlas learned much of the secrets she kept from everyone around her and he kept them as well. Still he also did what he could to help her to avoid needing to commit crimes to survive. The two were still in their very young preteen years and yet they seemed to be wiser than most of their age. Without Atlas she may not have been given much of a chance at a life of her own and she knows that even today.

Eventually when it came time for her to be of age to receive a ring for living on land she was quick to begin the move from the sea to land. She moved faster than Atlas in this aspect due to him having a family but the two were never far from each other for long. She would go back and forth as much as needed to establish her new life but also to be with her best friend. Marc could never have imagined a life without him and thus she had one foot in each version of her life until he finally was able to decide to come with her. From then on where one went the other followed. They explored the land and its wonders together and helped each other survive and adapt as needed.

Along the way Marc studied the other half of who she was and found ways to control her magic and affinity for the element of water through hard work and research. A coven has never become a thing of interest for her but Northknot itself offers enough opportunity for her to learn without her needing to be part of a group she isn’t sure she’d ever fit into. She has tried to find her father through her journey but it’s a thought in the back of her mind and not something she needs. No, Marc doesn’t find herself needing much of anything from others in her life. Trust is earned and there is only one person in her life that has earned that.

Nowadays the two still live together and spend much time around each other. A puzzle made of only two pieces they have a small family of their own in an odd way. Marc has trained to become a firefighter and now uses the magic she had to fight fires in a way that feels very natural to her. Marc may live on the land but a large part of her is connected to the water and it will always be that way. Her past has shaped a lot of who she is today but her present is still forming the young woman into something more. Marc still has plenty of growing to do and leaving her past in the past might just be the first step she can take.

Connections: 

OTHER HALF: The only person who has ever had her back and she will always have his. This is the boy she trusts most and possibly the only person she has trusted in her life. They do everything together and have since they were little. These two are ride or die. Complete opposites tangled together in the most unlikely of connections. EX SOMETHING OR OTHER: The one thing Marcelline doesn’t do is serious relationships. She’s taken her shot at dating though and this girl was one of the few to make it past more than a first date. LOVE/HATE FRIEND WITH BENEFITS: Marc hasn’t really had a serious relationship of any sort. She doesn’t let people in enough for that. This person is probably someone she is purely attracted to and possibly sometimes pissed off by. timeline of my spiral for anyone who wants to laugh react

july 2019: hit a wall with sleep deprivation, anemia, gut problems and probably plain burnout, started having conflicts with my boss especially around my lateness (our workday started at 5:00 AM, he refused to simply write me up or suspend me but instead wanted to “talk about it” and this became extremely intrusive and uncomfortable fast)

also july: had my first encounter with an animal in a sticky trap, outside my apartment, a bird who I was able to rescue

also july: quit that job, went back to the golf course to bartend a couple of days a week

august: moved back in with my parents as a result of my changed employment situation

late august: read that shockingly graphic article in the NYT about child porn that some of you may remember (do I need to put a trigger warning or can y’all use common sense and refrain from looking it up). sharp spike in anxiety, making it worse than it had been in six or seven years

september: picked up more hours at the golf course, was able to make some investments in myself -- a new sewing machine and some singing lessons. had my two-year cake. 

mid-october: found out I was pregnant. on a friday (K, not J, was the father -- some people do ask). made the quick decision to have an abortion but was unable to get in touch with any abortion provider until the middle of the following week (due to phone/email tag, etc), giving me enough time to start Feeling Things about the pregnancy

november: continuing to live with my parents and work full-time as a bartender, succumbed to angst and anxiety as expected -- but family, friends and coworkers with the glaring exception of my mom (who still pretends she didn’t even know I was pregnant, lol) were very supportive. for a brief period, we settled on keeping the baby, and told my dad and picked godparents. when I changed my mind again, my boyfriend was devastated. that pretty much hasn’t changed

late november: in a last-ditch attempt to fend off the crushing dread, I took a trip north to see a friend and her husband (to be clear, I would have visited them anyway lmfao). it helped a little. on the way back, I stopped to see some of my mother’s cousins, who tried to rope me into a pyramid scheme.

november 28: abortion day! my aunt took me to the clinic and then out for burgers. while we were eating, one of the cooks, who my aunt knew, fell off a ladder and onto his back.

first two weeks following the abortion: the normal feel-like-shit-no-matter-how-secure-you-were-in-your-decision period

dec 3: relapsed! 

dec 3 onwards: since the relapse went on for about three months, I can’t nail down when that “two week” period actually ended. pregnancy hormones resulted in waves of anger and teariness, but no satisfying “mourning”. I drank more heavily than I ever did before, routinely got shitfaced or even blacked out while on shift. I told people about the relapse, but the actual inebriation mostly went unnoticed.

christmas eve: after convincing J to come spend christmas with my family, got drunk again, we got in some sort of argument. I don’t remember.

christmas morning: J left as soon as possible.

the blurry period between christmas and mid-January 2020: 

more drinking at work, and a peak in the mouse and rat problem my workplace had been managing badly for several months. saw and heard three tiny, dying, bloody mice on two separate sticky traps (two different days). on a slow ~pasta night~, knocked back a couple of drinks so I could ask one of the cooks at the pasta buffet to leave his post and euthanize the second and third mouse. which he did as humanely as possible -- with a shovel. at this point I wrote a letter to my GM telling him how unacceptable it was to make his hormonal, post-abortive employees deal with sentient animals in their dying agonies, and could he please come up with a different pseudo-solution. about a week later, he came up to me and, with great diplomacy and tact, told me to shove it up my ass.

powdered bait laced with rat poison was placed on the floor in and around the bar and kitchen. I called the health inspector, who brought the hammer down on both the poison and the sticky traps. the poison was cleaned up (part of that job went to yours truly, with no protection) as were some but not all of the sticky traps

I developed a small crush on a long-time coworker (cook #1) who began behaving in what I assumed was meant to be a flirtatious way (eye-fucking, going out of his way to talk to me in a way he hadn’t before, etc). this included some pointed questions about my mental health (the abortion and the relapse were public information at this point). bizarrely, he refused to tell me anything personal about himself. he started dating one of the banquet girls. he eventually told a mutual friend (cook #2, and our shovel-killer from above) that he “got [a] vibe” that I “wanted to fuck” but (as cook #2 gleefully reported to me) made a face and expressed disgust at the possibility of ever being involved with me in that way. (WHY ASK ME ABOUT MY FUCKING ABORTION THEN, YOU WEIRDO)

cook #2 started trying to fuck me. I did not reciprocate. he then told me he thought I was a “six” and that he wasn’t interested. a few weeks later he tried to fuck me again

early january 2020: got both a yeast infection and bacterial vaginal infection

january 6: J had a grand mal seizure on my kitchen floor. I had never seen a seizure and the tremors were so severe that my dad, who had seen many, thought he may also have been having a stroke (turned out, just a seizure). he was hospitalized overnight and kicked to the curb -- but the process was begun to get him back into rehab

january 7 (?): employee gift exchange at work. I was on shift and wasn’t participating, but there weren’t a lot of customers and my coworkers asked me to come join them. there were five-gallon buckets of old sangria to which we were given unlimited access (and remember that I was the bartender, so I took the trips to the fridge and back). I blacked out. cook #2 called my mother and I vaguely recall getting in her van.

the days following that “party”: cook #2 and several other coworkers told me I “didn’t seem that drunk,” ie was not a horrible embarrassment. however, cook #2 told me that I’d made out with him. then I started to hear rumours that I and a third cook (cook #3) had disappeared for half an hour to “go have sex”. let me be graphic for a moment: I was wearing a panty-liner that night because the spotting from the abortion hadn’t stopped, I had a yeast infection, and I hadn’t trimmed my pubic hair in about a month -- no matter how drunk I was, I cannot see myself agreeing to take my pants off around a random coworker. someone told me that I had a cheeseburger in my hand when we disappeared and was still eating it when she saw me again so she doesn’t think anything happened -- but I was suspiciously sore the next day. was it the yeast infection or was I sexually assaulted? I don’t know because I was blacked out and I never asked cook #3

january 10: actual staff holiday party. cook #3 introduced me to his long-time girlfriend. we all smiled and shook hands.

mid-january: mac miller’s circles album dropped. I decided I wanted to live. I continued to drink until the end of february, but stayed sober for much longer periods between much shorter binges

late january: I put in my two-weeks’ notice at the golf course and borrow some money from my dad. stinky came to live with us.

february 1: k, stinky and me moved into a small house my parents’ church is renting

most of february: fighting, gossiping, and faction-forming in my AA homegroup, culminated in a member being expelled and a series of “group conscience” meetings which involved yelling, fighting and crying. a relatively new arrival to our group (but a longtimer in the program) started to power-grab, which wouldn’t have fazed me except that she started openly singling me out as a “newcomer” whose vote did not count. this despite other members relapsing in the same period I did, and said power-grabber having been in attendance at my fucking cake five months previous. things got awkward.

mid-february: J went back to rehab

also mid-february: I got pulled over driving drunk in washington state. ironically, the confidence and ease I got from the alcohol kept me from being rude and short with the officer as I usually am, and he told me in a very friendly way that the speed limit would increase by 10 mph a little further down the highway, so perhaps I was confused, and I should take care out there. no ticket. a sign from god?

also mid-february: I got formally assessed for ADHD and tried ritalin for the first time. this did not end up working out.

mid-february: I was invited to dinner by the much older man who does the irrigation on the golf course, through one of the gardeners, a woman a few years younger than me with an established father-daughter type relationship with the irrigation guy. the three of us ate dinner at his house, and she proceeded to pass out from drinking too much. irrigation guy took the opportunity to feel me up.

end of february: I took my last drink and decided to start applying for jobs

also end of february: my ADHD symptoms as well as my anxiety began to spike, throwing a wrench in my resume-writing and hand-shaking plans

march: something else threw a wrench in my hand-shaking plans, as it did with all of yours. it goes without saying that I have been terribly anxious. the upside is that I know for certain that the abortion was the right idea.

also march: I switched to vyvanse and began to see better results.

mid-march, at the very beginning of shut-downs where I live: I see irrigation guy again and he takes the opportunity to pat my ass. 

end of march: J relapsed in rehab, was discharged and will see at least a ninety-day delay in his plan to complete the program and then get into secondary housing. he was briefly hospitalized, during which time the doctors did so little for him that he would have literally been just as well off in a drunk tank. service canada lost some of his paperwork so he still doesn’t have his medical EI money.

yesterday: J moved into my shed. he spoke to his counsellor, who will try to get him into a recovery house. I am confident that some things, particularly his EI money, will work out very soon. but whatever happens I have felt a reduction in the second-hand stress. as I said, and now he agrees: it’s a pretty nice shed.

Arion | The Guardian  

Arion is a young Cherub, barely having enough standard angel to be allowed to work as a guardian. He is one of the only angels to truly value complete unity, and is considered by some to be the prophesied one to join angels and demons. Arion was saved by a demon in his youth, who he quickly bonded with and chose to befriend. Arion’s parents chose to entrust the demon as Arion’s godfather, allowing the demon to take part in raising Arion. Because of this, Arion has a deep understanding for demons and their lives; he considers a perfect future to be one where devils and angels live in harmony. 

Arion has blonde, curly hair, and a fairly flat face. His nose is wide and short, and his jawline is strong and squared; he is fairly short, standing at 4'11, and his wings are barely big enough to fly. Because of this, he cannot fly quickly, and can only fly for short periods of time. His wings look to be fully Cherub, being bright blue and green. 

Any muse can interact with Arion, as Arion can be assigned anyone to protect. He chooses to guard over his godfather despite it not being a requirement, and often talks about him; he holds the demon in high regard. How he interacts with your muse would depend on what kind of guardian your muse needed. 

Elohim | God. 

Elohim is the creator of everything. He has nearly unlimited power, only ever altering that fact when he accidentally restricts himself. The rule of promises was hard to learn, though one that he was forced to; after promising to never kill humans again, he found himself unable to harm humans. After stating that no one can see his face without dying, he found that to be the truth; Elohim has to wear a mask wherever he goes, for risk of those he interacts with dying. The mask is pitch black, and covers every bit of his face; even seeing his eyes would cause death, causing the eye holes to be covered in intricate glass beads. 

Elohim is rarely in his angelic form, though when he is he has 7 sets of wings, 19 eyes, and can sometimes be seen with extra arms. When in this body he is immune to any kind of attack, and looking at him directly can cause death. 

Any muse can interact with Elohim, although rarely. He chooses to not interact with others, and only ever decides to act differently in certain situations. Discussions with me can help decide why your muse would be interacting with Elohim.  

Tuhlo | God of Life

Tuhlo never knew his mother, growing up as the second-oldest son of Elohim. He was given the powers of healing at a young age, and quickly learned all of the good that he could do with it. Having been obsessed with music, however, he chose not to remain in Heaven, instead deciding to live on Earth with the humans. In his young life, Tuhlo found himself often drawn to parties, clubs, and plays, obsessed with music.

After learning about the way women were often treated for being sex workers or strippers, Tuhlo decided to open his own club. Hiring women or men who were in need of somewhere to stay or somewhere to hide, Tuhlo considers his workers to be family. He often takes in people who are running away from abusive parents, abusive exes, or people who were born into a poor enough situation that they have no true chance at a good life. Tuhlo gives them a job, someplace to stay, food, and protection. Many of Tuhlo's workers have chosen not to leave, making the situation sometimes mimic a cult.

Although he is capable of killing, Tuhlo rarely does. He only attacks when someone goes after one of his workers, in order to keep his workers safe. Tuhlo has a small group of people who work with him, attacking and killing those who attempt to attack his women first.

Tuhlo works in his club, and is easy to find; often times he is working as a DJ, or is in his apartment above, living by himself.

Vanessa Hawthorne { Nessie } | Devil 

Devil’s verse adopted from Immovable-Force. Vanessa is a 34 year old woman, with the devil Galatea summoned into her. The host of the body, Vanessa, has been dead for almost thirty years; Galatea took the body as her own, happy to transform the woman into who she wanted to be. She went under dozens of surgical modifications, making herself 6'4 with a perfect hourglass form. She is tattooed, though all in blacklight ink; she has multiple piercings on her body, and a corset piercing on her back. 

Although she is no longer deadly, she will grow physically violent if she believes that she has been wronged. Vanessa is not afraid to kill, and getting on her bad side may lead to this result; if she likes you, however, she will try and get you into bed. She is extremely sexually active, and suffers from mild depression that leads her to alcoholism and hypersexual tendencies. 

Vanessa is 6'4, and is never seen in anything other than designer clothing. Her eyes have been removed and replaced with glass ones, in order to hide the fact that she is a summoned devil; her eyes would glow orange were this not the case. She has short red hair that sits in large curls, and is never seen without black winged eyeliner and bright red lipstick.  

Ariel

Arion's mother; Ariel is a 56 year old Cherub, being fairly young for the species though the correct age for a mother. She is married to Orion, who she is deeply and sincerely in love with; Ariel's personality is very similar to Arion, being extremely happy and bubbly at all times. Ariel struggles slightly with being serious, though only because she associates it with things being bad; Ariel is extremely sensitive to negativity, often choosing to stay away from it. She is extremely short, slightly chubby, and has very small, blue wings.

Orion

The father of Arion; Orion is an extremely tall Reaper, being one of nearly full power. He is an extremely cold, closed off person, often coming off as cruel due to a lack of social skills. Orion cares deeply for his family, and often tries to come across as friendly as his wife and son; unfortunately, he often comes across as awkward or condescending.

Tyr

Tyr is the firstborn son of God, believing himself to be born from Elohim and an unnamed angel. However, Tyr is a clone of Elohim, God having hoped that he could make a more powerful being than himself though failing; Tyr stands as the God of Universes, often creating new universes or hopping between existing ones. He is an asexual nonbinary, and looks identical to Elohim. Tyr can come across as extremely immature, though he is the most mature of all of Elohim's sons, having raised every child that Elohim wound up neglecting.

Ruhiel

Ruhiel is one of the few Seraphs, belonging to God. He is the messenger, and often finds himself working all day delivering messages from God, the Dominion, and other Seraphs. Ruhiel is fairly young in appearance, and looks similarly to Arion; the two are extremely distantly related, though both share the same hair color and type. Rather than having blue eyes, Ruhiel has brown; his wings match. He is an extremely tired angel, and is often closed off and quiet.

Elijah

Elijah is a guardian angel, with large white wings. He is constantly working, and can be considered to be addicted to his job; Elijah can come across as cold or strict, but he is extremely caring, only ever caring about what is best for his Protected. Anyone can be protected by Elijah, as he is a standard angel given out to the common person.

Barbara Gordon (1984-1999)

I’m Barbara Gordon. Most people call me Babs. I’m the daughter of two awesome cops: James “Jim” Gordon and Sarah Essen-Gordon, I also have a little brother, Jimmy, which we do not need to say much about and a cousin-turned-surrogate sister, Carrie Kelley. At night, after my brother and I were sent to bed, I would postpone sleep and instead listen through the thin walls of our home as my parents talked about the horrors they had witnessed that day on the job. I feel comfortable enough to say I was equally horrified and intrigued.

At a young age, I spent a lot of my time on computers and discovered I had a knack for not just their use, but deciphering code. By the time I was ten, I made myself into a self-trained hacker and would often become involved in a variety of causes, becoming a hacktivist before the word had ever been coined. Of course, I was what we called a “White Hat”, a good guy.

As teenager, I stowed away in the backseat of dad’s squad car hoping to sneak into the GCPD mainframe and hack their database (again, I was a good guy- I had good intentions, I promise) but instead I found my dad lied to my mom. He didn’t go to the precinct that night; he didn’t even get a call to a crime scene. Nope, dad went to a secret meeting with an urban legend.

I kept quiet and the next week, Sal Maroni and Carmine Falcone were both arrested by my father on charges that actually stuck. My father was promoted from Desk Sergeant to Lieutenant of the Vigilante Task Force. Within a month, the Gotham Gazette had caught a picture of the “Bat-Man” and just like that, Gotham was as obsessed with vigilante justice as I was.

I talked my dad into letting me enroll in self-defense classes. After studying Internet videos of the Batman, I realized I’d need more than just karate lessons and a few hours at the gym and so I lied about joining a few extracurricular activities in order to enroll in three other defense courses (Akido, Stick-Fighting, Judo) in addition to Boxing at the Wildcat Gym.

After news had broke that Batman was working with a teenage boy, I decided that it was time for a girl to show them how it’s done. So, I traded my black belt in for a utility belt…

Batgirl (1999-2000)

Batgirl began with a whimper, I’m sad to admit. I had the mask, the homemade costume (complete with cape and utility belt), and the attitude. But, it still took me weeks of rooftop patrols and back-alley stakeouts before I got a chance to prevent my first mugging… and I failed. I tripped on my way down a fire escape, but I didn’t give up. I did a sketch of the culprits and I made sure to commit their faces to memory. Later that month, I stopped a carjacking and recognized the tattoo on that guy’s neck. Borrowing my dad’s GCPD login credentials, I was able to gather that the tattoo belonged to the Badger Boulevard Ballers, a lower west side gang. So armed with this information and my unique brand of moxy, I paid the Ballers a visit.

I took a few lumps and maybe broke a rib or two, but I found that first victim’s wallet and returned it. It was a lot to go through for thirteen bucks and an expired gym membership card, but I was not going to let Batgirl start out as a joke. I believed in this… and it paid off. My take down with the ballers caught the attention of a certain duo who started investigating me. I am a bit ashamed to say I took them three hours to figure out who I was. They paid me a visit in the middle of my patrol the next night. I still remember the words of warning Batman gave me, “Stay out of this, Barbara”, he told me, I’m sure in an effort to scare me… but Bruce didn’t know me then as much as he though he did.

As my wounds mended, I set my sights on a new gang in town, calling themselves the Red Hoods. While I was in the middle of my research during my lunch hour in the school library’s computer lab, a boy that didn’t go to my school slipped me a note and had me follow him to a chauffeured car in the parking lot where I met billionaire Bruce Wayne who told me that he was aware of my research and realized that I wasn’t going to quit. So he made me a deal. He’d give me a computer with unlimited access to finish my research, an armored costume, actual crimefighting training, and all I had to do was let my injuries heal completely before he would let me go out on patrol again. Longest five weeks of my life.

Batgirl (2000-2004)

When I recovered from my beating, Batman kept his promise and not only did he officially endorse me for patrol duty, he even gave me a Kevlar bodysuit form-fitted to my dimensions. I’m not sure I want to know how he got it fit so right in some areas… Anyway! So, while I was recovering, Bruce did let me take the Bat-Computer for a spin. He was really protective of his “baby” at first (and I don’t blame him), but after he saw that I was the better hacker (he hated to admit it, it was a bitter pill for him to swallow, Bruce let me do the work on tracking down the Red Hood Gang’s movements and we figured out they planned to make a heist at the Ace Chemicals plant. This was my first big team-up with Batman and Robin and we did kick some major teeth in! With the gang’s leader cornered, he pulled a knife on Batman and in the ensuing fight, the wannabe mastermind got knockec over a railing and into a vat ov bbuly ooze. In the aftermath of the leader’s death, the Red Hood gang dissolved (much like their leaders body must have… still gross to think about), and we moved on to bigger fish.

As Batgirl, I saw a lot of action. The rise of much of our most notorious villains happened during my turn under the cowl, in what we called the “Long Halloween” (because it all started on Halloween night with Riddler and Mr. Freeze and kept going for several months like a parade of costumed freaks); I was present for Harvey Dent’s scarring and drastic shift into Two-Face; and aI also got to join “the Super Friends” (what Flash called the “team” of him, Supes, Double Dubs, GA, BC, Bats, Robin, and myself when we teamed up a few times before Brainiac’s trip to DC helped make us official as “the Justice League of America”) and I helped found the Titans. So Yeah… I’m a really big deal.

Now for the twist, even though I walked on the wild side, risking life and limb every night fighting ganglords and crocodile men, it was not being Batgirl that landed me where I am now. No, I was targeted by the Joker simply for being the daughter of Jim Gordon, Gotham’s top cop. Can you say irony?

Oracle (2004-)

Okay, yes… I am paralyzed. I live my life in a wheelchair now, all because a madman shot me in a bad to drive my father insane. It nearly worked, to tell you the truth. Hell, it nearly drove ME insane, too. But after I was done feeling sorry for myself, I realized I had a lot of work to do. First thing to do was take care of myself. I needed help and admitting that was difficult. So, I got myself into some physical, occupational, and psychological therapy. With that underway, I started to work on getting the Dynamic Duo back together, Bruce and Dick had a falling out and since I was in a coma, I was unable to talk some sense into them before they reached their breaking point. By the time I woke up, Dick was struggling with finding a new purpose in his life and Bruce was in a dark place. So first course of business, I helped get Dick set up as Nightwing in Blüdhaven, giving him a chance to carve his own path and step out of the shadow of the Bat, hoping that in so doing he would begin to see all that Bruce had offered him that he had been overlooking due to his rage.

With Dick taken care of, I then talked to Bruce, opening him up to the prospect of taking on a new Robin. I could not have predicted that he would choose a street-kid like Jason Todd to fill that void in his life, but to Batman’s credit, he saw what others never had seen in Jason before and was beginning to coax it out of the kid… and then the Joker broadcast his online torture and murder of Jason Todd and that’s when something happened that I could have never predicted… we were powerless to stop it. The Joker had devised a cyber-plot we were unprepared to handle, technologically and emotionally.

I know the very moment I became Oracle, it was the moment I saw Jason’s blood dripping from the Bat-Signal after my father allowed Batman to carry the body away. Now, just Batman has his Gotham, I have the World-Wide-Web. Now, I am not just Bat-Girl in a wheelchair, I am a critical part of the entire “capes and tights” franchise as an integral part of the operations of not just Batman’s crusade, but also those of the Justice League, the Titans, and the Outsiders… but I also the leader of my own team: the Birds of Prey! Yeah, I’m a big deal. ;)

independent study #3: 2008 Financial Crisis, causes and consequences

Introduction

The Great Recession in 2008 is viewed as the second terrifying crisis in addition to the great depression. I found it very interesting and also valuable as my parents have been in the crisis. Served in a US company, my parents were largely affected by the crisis, however every time I ask them what this whole thing is about, they always gave a vague answer, saying that it triggered a stock market crash and caused unemployment in China. I was curious as for how this crisis would spread to so many countries and the causes of it. Statistics show that the great recession result in a 35% real drop in housing prices spread over a period of 6 years. Equity price fell 55% over 3 years. Output fell 9% over two years, while unemployment rises 7% one 4 years. Finally, central government debt rises to 86% compared to its pre-crisis level.

What caused the crisis

new government policy- a look at the US history

After the Second World War, America introduced a new lending system called mortgage. A mortgage is a legal agreement between two parties which transfers the ownership of a property to a lender as a security for a loan. That means that if the borrower default on the loan, the lender has the right to take back the property of the borrower. Traditionally, banks would raise funds, screen borrowers, and would lend out money only to those who are qualified. If the borrower default, banks would bear the loss. Therefore, the traditional system makes sure that banks will carefully assess the creditworthiness of borrowers so that the default rate is minimized. however, after “mortgages” are invented, banks wouldn’t have to worry because they can simply sell off their property. These means that the loans are made for prime market citizens, and therefore a lot of citizens are excluded out of the “American dream” of owning a house. Therefore, in 1992 the US government started to lower its interest rate, relax underwriting standards, and also created a secondary market so-called subprime mortgages to enable the homeownership dream for middle-class citizens. By 2004, the interest rate had been lowered to 0.4%. Due to the low-interest rate, many citizens saw a chance to own a house, the increased demand for houses leads to a rising price for houses.

US real estate crisis and the housing bubble

After mortgages are created, to earn a profit, US banks bundled thousands of mortgages together and securitized them, turning them into something called mortgage-backed securities and sold to other investors. Part of the reasons why the financial crisis is so severe is because no one really thought the Americans are going to default in mass on their mortgages. Bankers and investors all believe that MBS was very safe because: first of all, it’s very rare that people default, secondly, even if they default, chances are all of America wouldn’t default at once. Thirdly, the house still has some intrinsic value so if banks foreclose on the home they can still recoup some of their investments by reselling. It seemed that MBS is a very safe option for investors.

However, there was a housing bubble in the market. Figure 1 shows the Case-Shiller 10-city index since 1990. The figure illustrates the dramatic acceleration in house price increases in the early 2000s and their fall since July 2006. The most important reason for the bubble is the US policy in 2003- 2004, which is also shown in figure 1 as a decrease in interest rate. The Fed deliberately lowered the interest rate in order to avoid a recession after the consequence of tech bubble in 2000 and 911 terrorist attacks in 2001, creating a significant incentive for people to borrow at one per cent and buy houses going up at much higher rate. In addition, there were various other public policies that made it easier to buy, leading to increased demand in the housing market.

In 2005 The Economist surveyed the widespread increase in property prices and warned:

The total value of the residential property in developed economies rose by more than $30 trillion over the past five years to over $70 trillion, an increase equivalent to 100% of those countries’ combined GDPs. Not only does this dwarf any previous house-price boom, but it is also larger than the global stock market bubble in the late 1920s (55% of GDP). In other words, it looks like the biggest bubble in history.1

What happened later is the subprime mortgages default rate soon started to rise as borrowers are not able to serve the monthly payment. Shown by the chart below, in 2004 the Federal Reserve gradually increase the interest rate due to a fear of inflation. However, the CPI didn’t fall, shown by figure 2, leading to the continuous increase in interest rate to 5.25% in 2006. (the Fed keep raising interest rates, hoping it would respond at some point) This severely affected the mortgages that have flexible interest rates, leading to further delinquencies. The untimely increase in interest rate leads to accusations that the Fed was blindly following the targeting rule without thinking about the consequences for the rest of the economy. As a result, the houses went into the property of banks and investors who bought MBS. As houses prices went up, the banks still have the opportunity to sell their houses with a profit, as emerging house prices prevented them from the loss.

Soon, the housing supply in the US exceeded the demand for houses, leading to a stagnation of house prices. The housing bubble busted and bankers, investors wanted to sell off the property before losing more money. In the subprime mortgage market, foreclosure rates increased by 43% over the last two quarters of 2006 and increased by a staggering 75% in 2007 compared with 2006”8   It soon became a virtuous cycle.

3. deregulation and the creation of CDO

Through mergers and acquisition, investment banks joined together and gained substantial monopoly power. In 2000, the government announced the deregulation of derivatives in the financial market. As a result, investment banks were encouraged to search for new financial products with higher risks and higher return. Just as stated above, mortgages and MBS are some of their products. A new financial derivative called collateralized debt obligation (CDO) is created. The difference between CDO and MBS is that CDO offers different interest rates and is possible to serve the needs of all investors because this derivative is divided into three different tranches. Rating agencies are responsible to rate and evaluate the value and risk of CDO. The CDO is divided into three tranches senior CDO with triple-A rating, mezzanine tranche with A or B ratings and finally equity tranche which provides both the highest possible risk and highest possible returns. Therefore, rating agencies usually don’t even give them any rating and refer to them as “junk” debt.

The market for CDO grew tremendously and the demand for this new financial product went global. Countries, especially in Europe, started to buy CDO shares. On the other hand, as investment banks charged a fee for every share, they made millions of dollars of profit.

4. Corruption of investment banks and rating agencies

In order to sell those CDO with high risks to investors, US investment banks paid rating agencies to continue giving high ratings to the CDO, although they were actually very risky and toxic. In this way, rating agencies tippled their profit and also form alliances with the investment banks. For the rating agencies, they have no liability if their ratings went wrong because they can simply say that it’s their personal opinion. As a result, buyers feel trusted and secured by the rising house prices in the market and therefore purchased abundant shares of CDO.

5. AIG- the biggest insurance company in the world

AIG not only spelled traditional insurance to the customers, but they also created credit default swap (CDS), which worked like insurance. An investor who purchased CDS has to pay a premium to AIG, and the benefit that investor get is that if the CDO defaults, AIG will pay the investor for his losses. In addition, AIG could do this for unlimited quantities because there was no government regulation for CDS requiring to put one aside. Instead, they didn’t treat their customers as clients but viewed their payments as a duty as there are huge bonuses for the employees as soon as contracts were signed. In this way, AIG, investment banks were greedy to boost their profit without disclosing their secret intentions to the customers.

Consequences

Unable to pay back their mortgages, people had to leave their home for sale. Foreclosure of houses reached 6 million until 2010. But not only people suffered, but the real estate also suffered as there was no longer enough demand after the bubble busted. It wasn’t soon after then the first mortgage lending companies claimed bankruptcy, and the subprime mortgage crisis turned into a financial crisis. In 2008, two giant mortgage lenders, Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac, got taken over by the Federal Reserve. Afraid that the loans will not be paid back by firms, there was rising insecurity and mistrust among the banks and the banks stopped lending each other. For AIG, it was taken over by the government because certainly, I didn’t have enough cash to pay back losses for CDS. For investors, they are probably the most severe sufferer from the financial crisis. For private investors and small institutions who placed their money in CDO’s almost lasted all of their money.

Consumers around the world consume less and spend less in the fear that they may lose their jobs and money in an insecure environment. China manufactures, who are the main suppliers of the US suffered as US companies stopped to invest and reduced demand. In China, more than 10 million migrant workers lost their jobs. In Europe, especially Germany, several subsidiaries and offices of the banking companies had to close because they heavily invested in US security market.

At the end of the crisis, the unemployment rate in the US and Europe rose to 10%, the highest value since the 1970s. Some of the biggest financial firms that were ‘too big to fail” were bailed out by the government, or rescued by the government funds.

Conclusion

After looking at the causes from different perspectives, we can conclude that the crisis started from the government policy- low-interest rate by the Fed, which led to increasing demand in real estate market, increase price in housing. In addition, it also led to an increase in mortgage, especially unsafe subprime mortgages. In addition, reduced underwriting standards- a fundamental change in the lending policy. The government failed to identify theirs of mortgaged product and therefore the housing meltdown happened. There are low or even no regulation among investment banks, rating agencies and insurance companies such as AIG, leading to the bribery between these financial institutions. Therefore, these different causes are highly interrelated and complex.

But in the end, no one of these bankers was blamed in the court. Leaving their firms will hands full of money, the true victims are the poorest, the investors and buyers of this mortgage who lose all of their money. Nowadays, 3000 lobbyists ware employed in the financial sector to influence politics

My chara never died but toriel and asgore did divorce and Chara went to live with Asgore. She did kill people and harmed herself daily. When she turned 17 she stopped and tried to be a good person. Chara loves kids and probably would adopt an entire orphanage. Would probably fuck Fell. She loves chocolate. Shes 18. Has brown hair that stops at her shoulders. Brown shorts brown boots with white socks that go up to her knees. A green sweater with a single yellow stripe. Pinkish cheeks and red eyes. Scars on her wrists and thighs. Wears a locket given to her by Asriel. She is a demon. Her full name is Chara Valentine Dreemurr She takes alot of anti-depressants. Fell (Underfell) As a child she lived a good life had nice parents then on a hiking trip she had an urge to climb mount ebbot and she fell into the underground adopted by Toriel and Asgore. At age 14 she accidently poisoned Asriel and killed him. This sent her into a major depression she then started drinking heavily then left and lived with Uf Sans and paps. She never killed anybody. My car is a 1994 Lexus ES300 with 125,000+ miles on it. I would say it is in good or fair condition, the leather seats are cracking badly and it has a few scrathes, etc. I'm just wandering if it is in my best interest to repair this car or for it to be totaled out. The estimate for repairs in $3500.00, which could always go up once repairs start for unseen damage. I'm just not sure the car is worth repairing for that amount considering its condition. Hi all, I recently got my drivers license when I turned 17, and am now looking to buy a car. I'm looking at a Foxbody mustang 5.0. Before the omg 17 get a civic comments, I can drive, I seldom speed, and when I do, its on an empty road in the middle of the night. I have track experience and know how to control a car, don't try to convince me otherwise. Now, my problem. Obviously mustang insurance for a 17yr old will be nuts, but right now I'm on my parents insurance policy so I can drive their car(1 car family), and a friend of mine told me I could just insure my car under my dad's name and claim that I drive it occasionally. So I realize I could claim my father is the primary driver and I'm just an occasional driver, but if I am actually the only one who is driving it, and something does happen where I get into an accident or get a ticket, what could happen? Would I be covered in case of an accident? Can they say no and not cover me if they find out I'm the primary driver? I'd be the only person driving it whatsoever, my dad can't even drive a stick, so I'm wondering if this is even possible or not. Thanks.""

Will applying for medicaid affect the insurance I have now in any way?

I am 32 weeks pregnant and I am covered under my dad's insurance through Tricare. I remain eligible under his insurance until I am 23 and everything is full coverage. However, as soon as my baby is born he is not covered at all. I am looking into my options and I read that if I apply for medicaid now, then I can call the day my baby is born and just have him added on so that way he will have coverage right away. And that it shows that the airbag deployed as a result of impact. The airbag did not actually fully deploy. There is no powder or injury to me to justify a complete deployment. Does anybody know if they have the right to deny my claim based on suspicion? They keep trying to make me say that my boyfriend was driving the car, which he wasn't. We were in the house together all night. The case is complicated and it is about my car insurance. I misinformed my insurance company about my NCD. As a result they cancelled my policy. The problem is that before they cancelled it I had a claim. My car was not damage at all but the other guy had a few scratches on the bumper and he reported the incident. Jeff Lynn is on a mission to save capitalism from itself at a time when millions feel locked out, and unable to foresee themselves better off than their parents. His answer: to democratize capital.

That is one reason he founded Seedrs, an online platform through which individual investors can buy shares in high-growth companies at an early stage — a privilege once reserved for institutions and private equity funds. The other reason was to make money.

While the wealthy have always been able to take advantage of alternative high-growth investments, governments barred others from doing so for their own protection. They thought “everyone else is a complete blithering idiot”, Mr. Lynn says. “There is a vast number of people out there, particularly with the levels of information that are available today, who are able to understand risk, who are able to make sensible decisions, who may not be fabulously wealthy but should be able to get much wealthier. That’s how capitalism is supposed to work. Maybe they can’t put £50,000 into every private investment they do, but would love to be able to put £500, or £5,000 in.”

Seedrs, which along with Crowdcube dominates the UK market, has funded more than 540 deals, representing £280m of investment. Some were follow-on rounds, and in total about 400 companies have been funded. About 20-30 companies are live on the site at any time.

Mr. Lynn believes crowdfunding is part of the solution to the rise of populism, saying that policymakers should focus not just on the income gap but the wealth gap. Many salaried workers see the assets of the rich, such as housing and art, rising in value far faster than wages. That leads to resentment and the rise of figures such as Donald Trump.

Crowdfunding — where companies raise money directly from individual investors, usually online, rather than via institutions — has taken off. Most sites lend money, undercutting the banks and offering a better return on cash. Seedrs, Crowdcube, and equity crowdfunders allow investors to buy stakes in a business from £10.

Tennis star Sir Andy Murray is the public face of Seedrs, and presumably he can afford to back the odd loser. “This is a high-risk asset class; nobody should invest in this with money that they can’t afford to lose.”

Mr. Lynn, 39, is from the U.S. but has lived in the UK for 12 years. He founded the business five years ago with Carlos Silva, who is Portuguese — the men met on an MBA course at Oxford Saïd Business School. Mr. Silva’s landlord put in £30,000 and connected them with other angel investors.

“I was a deal lawyer, I was doing M&A and corporate finance. I wanted to do something entrepreneurial,” Mr. Lynn says. He now wants to supercharge the site by persuading institutional funds to invest in portfolios of companies on the site. He has stepped up to chairman to lead that strategy and has recruited Jeff Kelisky, another New Yorker with tech-sector experience, as chief executive. “I was spread too thinly,” said Mr. Lynn. It was time for the founder to hand over to someone “who had done this before and wasn’t learning as he went”.

The two Jeffs want to offer institutions a way to tap into high-growth companies that offer diversification. Some analysts question whether this will crowd out the very small investors that were supposed to benefit. “We have no desire to move away from the small investors, and there’s absolutely no reason to,” Mr. Lynn says.

The Seedrs office is in Old Street, the heart of London’s tech cluster. It is as much a tech as a finance business, says Mr. Lynn. In October 2017 it raised £10m, with £4m from UK fund manager Neil Woodford, known for his belief in long-term, small-cap investing. So is it better to invest in Seedrs or the companies on its platform? Mr. Lynn is non-committal. Some of its customers will “hit the moon and beyond”. However, he draws an analogy to the California gold rush, where those who made the most money were often those who supplied the miners rather than dug for gold — such as clothes-maker Levi Strauss. “Rather than trying to pick which mine is going to have the gold, you back the folks selling the picks and shovels to the miners.”

He has statistics to back this. The 2017 fundraising round valued Seedrs at £50m. Its last round in August 2015 had valued it at £30m. The share price is up 136 per cent since its December 2013 round — though Seedrs remains lossmaking.

More than 2,000 existing shareholders and new customers, from 35 countries, have invested an average of £3,200. Sir Andy was one. (He has also backed 30 companies on the platform.)

Seedrs makes money by taking roughly 6 per cent commission on funds raised, and then a share of any increase in value when the company is sold — similar to the “carry” earned by private equity firms. This means it is less reliant on fresh deals to make money than peer-to-peer lenders.

It expects to turn over £2m this year and to lose around £4m, but Mr. Lynn insists profitability will come “within a few years”. Seedrs funded 100 companies in 2016 and expects to surpass 150 this year, and 10 times that in 2022.

Crowdfunding by numbers

Critics say a big difference between crowdfunding and the stock market is liquidity — you cannot just sell your stake. But Seedrs has begun a secondary market and says it has had several exits already.

Some companies have been sold to trade buyers, such as Aviva, the insurer. Debenhams, the retailer, took a stake in Blow, an on-demand beauty service, and offered to buy out investors. The sale price was more than three times the price at which Seedrs investors invested in the first round.

Free Agent, a Scottish maker of accounting software, floated in November 2016 at 87p. Its shares remain below the 100p Seedrs investors paid, though some sold when it hit 140p this year. Chapel Down, a vineyard, was already quoted on the Nex exchange (formerly ISDX) when it raised money at 28p a share in October 2014. It has been trading around three times that level.

In the year to September 30 2016, Seedrs investors received an annualized rate of return of 14.44 per cent. It increased to 49.1 per cent for those taking advantage of tax reliefs. The company looked at 375 companies that raised money on the platform between July 2012 and September 2016. These businesses delivered an average internal rate of return of 14.4 per cent, if priced at “fair value” at that date.

Overall about 15 per cent of companies had lost value — many of those could be worthless — while 29 per cent increased in value. Mr. Lynn says that of 539 deals completed, 92 have wound up or were in the process of doing so by the end of November 2017. “The majority of investments in this asset class will go to zero — that’s the nature of a high-risk, high-return asset class — and the goal is to build a diversified portfolio where the handful of winners do well enough to provide outstanding returns across the whole portfolio.”

In the early years of peer-to-peer lending, some small operators failed. Mr. Lynn claims new regulations are sufficient. “I am very much pro-regulation. The UK has been really first in the world in terms of getting the balance right.” The Financial Conduct Authority took responsibility for the sector in 2014.

Only about a fifth of the companies wanting to join the platform are accepted. Seedrs checks the background of directors, the claims made in their campaigns, including the ownership of intellectual property, and that shares are of equal worth rather than a dual structure.

Of those, 40 per cent raise the money they need. But the platform is now actively seeking companies and is doing more due diligence.

The business has offices in Amsterdam, Berlin and Lisbon, and hopes to be truly pan-European within a few years. Mr. Lynn believes the system needs more equity investments, which favor long-term thinking.

“I like equity. I like the alignment of incentives, I like the idea that if things go well you share in it together, if things go badly you don’t. I don’t like debt, instinctively; it’s an adversarial relationship.”

“In some ways what we do is really rather boring and old-fashioned,” he says. He compares it to a 17th century merchant which would sell shares to fund a trading trip. If he crashed on the rocks, his backers lost everything. If he came back with a cargo of spices, they all got a big payout.

And Seedrs’ “mission”, he says, is to make capitalism deliver for more people. “All of the complex derivative instruments, the weirdness, that emerged in the past 20 years in particular is a historical aberration,” he says. “I believe in capitalism, but I believe in it being done the right way.”

The Full Story Behind Supergirl’s (Non-Gooey) DCAU Debut

Welcome to the seventh installment of Adventure(s) Time, where we take a look at a classic episode of an animated series and an issue of its comics tie-in. This time, we return to the city of Metropolis, where Superman encounters a Super…girl?

Supergirl made her animated debut on May 2, 1998, in episode twenty-seven of “Superman: The Animated Series.” It’s a two-parter entitled “Little Girl Lost” (directed by Curt Geda and written by Evan Dorkin & Sarah Dyer, in addition to Paul Dini, Alan Burnett and Rich Fogel.) This was after months of negotiation between the producers, who wanted to feature Supergirl on the series, and DC Comics, which was adamant at the time that Superman should be the sole surviving Kryptonian. The producers were free to use the existing interpretation of the character, “a man-made lifeform made of synthetic protoplasm created by a pocket universe version of Lex Luthor”, but they wanted to stick to Supergirl Classic (gee, I wonder why…)  Kenner’s decision to produce to a Supergirl action figure seems to have been the final push needed to add her to the series.

The first chapter of “Little Girl Lost” opens with Superman exploring the solar system that once housed his birth planet, Krypton. He finds no signs of life, but he does detect a distress signal that’s being beamed from the seemingly abandoned planet Argo. (Superman, whose power levels are closer to the re-imagined John Byrne version in the series, can’t fly independently into space during long journeys, so he travels in a space craft that, as luck would have it, was also a toy vehicle made available by Kenner at the time.) Superman arrives on the frozen, barren remains of Argo and learns that the message was sent by the scientist Kala In-Ze before she placed her remaining family members into stasis tubes. Unfortunately, the ice that accumulated on the planet, which we later learn was knocked out of orbit by Krypton’s destruction, destroyed the tubes and caused the death of the family…with one exception. The tube containing Kara In-Ze, Kala’s daughter, remained intact. When we next we see Kara, she’s living in Superman’s hometown of Smallville, with his adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha Kent.

The revised origin turns out to be a fairly traditional take on Supergirl. She’s Superman’s “cousin” again, but not in the sense that she’s a direct family member. (Instead, it’s a part of her cover identity on Earth.)  Kara is an Argoan, a species that evolved from the Kryptonians, so while the yellow sun does grant her powers, she doesn’t share a bloodline with Superman. This technicality was enough to please DC’s editorial staff, and even though Supergirl’s altered origin was intended to play a role in future stories, nothing really came of it. Eventually the character was viewed as Supergirl’s relative, and any talk of differing bloodlines was ignored.

Increasingly restless living on the farm, Kara travels to Metropolis after she learns that Intergang is recruiting teenagers as members. Offering to help Superman on the case, her cousin informs her to stay in his apartment and keep her nose out of trouble. Meanwhile, Jimmy Olsen is eager to obtain his first big scoop on the Intergang story, but Lois is quick to dismiss his efforts. Soon, Jimmy and Kara have a chance meeting, and during a run-in with Intergang, Kara unveils her new Supergirl outfit. In this continuity, it’s Jimmy Olsen who provides Kara her superhero alias, a name she quickly adopts with pride.

The story eventually reveals that Intergang is working as a front for Granny Goodness and her Female Furies. Superman (who puts up a rather pathetic showing) is defeated by the Furies after he arrives on the scene, and taken to their home in Apokolips. Supergirl follows, evades an army of Parademons, kills more than a few of them, and eventually rescues her cousin. Granny’s master, Darkseid, soon unveils his plan. Due to a treaty, he isn’t allowed to directly interfere in Earth affairs, but under the assumption that he can’t be blamed for a natural disaster, he’s conspired for a Doomsday Magnet on Earth to draw a comet to the planet. Back on Earth, Jimmy and a reformed Intergang teen named Amy try to disconnect the Doomsday Magnet, but fail. Superman and Supergirl return to Earth, and in her zeal, she destroys the Magnet before Superman has a chance to reprogram it and send the comet away from Earth’s orbit. Oops. Superman flies into space to physically push the comet out of orbit, and a piece  breaks off and flies towards Metropolis. Supergirl flies through the comet piece, destroying it. She falls unconscious, however, and is rescued by Superman.

Later, Jimmy is admiring the byline he’s received for writing the Intergang story (Not bad for a teenager working as a freelance photographer. I hope the Planet’s writing staff isn’t unionized.), while the perpetually cheerful Supergirl flies over the skyline of Metropolis.

You might’ve noticed that five separate writers have credits on this two-part episode. Writing partners Evan Dorkin & Sarah Dyer have revealed that their initial script saw heavy rewrites, after one of the producers changed his mind about the story. Specifically, the conclusion, and the details of Darkseid’s plan, were quite different from what audiences witnessed. (You can read a Toonzone interview with the duo here.) The element of teens fighting against adults that’s so prevalent in the opening chapter just drops out of the story, but was initially an important aspect of the conclusion, which also revealed the origin of Darkseid’s Parademons.

Evan Dorkin and Sarah Dyer saw less interference with their next Supergirl story, which was conceived as a special edition of the “Adventures” comic. Due to the long delays in the debut of “Little Girl Lost,” DC held the comic for months. Instead of being released as a “Supergirl Adventures” special (in the same vein as 1997’s “Batgirl Adventures” one-shot), it appeared as a double-sized issue of the monthly comic.

“Superman Adventures” #21, written by Evan Dorkin & Sarah Dyer and penciled by Bret Blevins, brings us the sequel to the cartoon, in addition to several pages of material that was cut from Supergirl’s origin story. The opening of the story takes place decades before the first act of “Little Girl Lost,” as we’re offered a glimpse into Kara’s life before the destruction of Krypton. Her father has traveled from Argo to Krypton without her, leaving Kara behind with her mother, uncle, and cousins. Following the destruction of Krypton, and Argo’s journey away from its sun, we witness the brave efforts of Kara’s mother to save the family, and the brutal circumstances that force them to risk their lives inside the cold sleep chambers first seen in the opening of “Little Girl Lost.”

Superman’s discovery of Kara is left off-panel, with a footnote pointing readers towards the appropriate episodes of the cartoon, but the reader does witness much more of her early days on Earth. We actually see Kara’s awakening inside S.T.A.R. Labs, and her first meeting with Emil Hamilton (a relationship that leads to important developments in the “Justice League Unlimited” animated series.) And while the animated series might’ve left you with the impression that Kara was only in Smallville for a few weeks before becoming Supergirl, we learn now that she’s had several months to adjust to life on Earth, making friends with the other kids and even attending the prom.

After skipping past Kara’s first adventure as Supergirl, the story moves ahead to the next time Kara visits Metropolis. Superman is going to be away on Justice League business, and Kara is more than willing to volunteer as Metropolis’ hero during his absence. She dons the brown wig and glasses she first wore while visiting the city and tries to play tourist with Martha Kent. Unbeknownst to her, Granny Goodness is implementing a new plan that she hopes will redeem herself in Darkseid’s eyes. Soon, Granny is traveling into the Phantom Zone to retrieve Kryptonian criminals Jax-ur and Mala, who debuted on the series back in Season One’s “Blasts From the Past” (how they escaped the “no other Kryptonians except Superman” rule is unknown to me.)

She doesn’t realize that they’re actually being held as tiny prisoners back in Metropolis’ S.T.A.R. Labs, thanks to events in the eighth issue of “Superman Adventures.” Instead, she meets General Zod, a character that was surprisingly missing from the DC Animated Universe, outside of a fantasy appearance in the “Justice League Unlimited” episode “For the Man Who Has Everything.” This version of Zod was designed by Evan Dorkin to evoke Terence Stamp’s appearance in “Superman II,” and he behaves pretty much as you’d expect General Zod to act in any version of the canon.

Soon, Zod is on Earth, he’s restored Jax-ur and Mala to their proper size inside S.T.A.R. Labs, and Supergirl must face the three deadly Kryptonians with no help from her cousin. Kara obtains a sample of Kryptonite and brazenly uses it against her foes — after all, she isn’t Kryptonian, so it has no effect on her. Unfortunately, she learns that Zod is also Argoan, and just as immune as she is. With no other options, Supergirl flies to Superman’s Fortress of Solitude, in the hopes of using the Brainiac Globe to learn some weakness to use against Zod. This also requires her to face her fear of cold environments, which has plagued her ever since Argo fell into a perpetual winter. After the Brainiac Globe provides her with a helpful recap of Zod’s backstory, she’s confronted by the real thing. Zod followed her the entire way, and their ensuing battle destroys much of the Fortress. Eventually, Kara is inspired to force Zod into the pen of an Argoan creature, which must be kept under red sunlight. Zod is powerless without yellow sun, and unable to defend himself from the ghastly beast inside the pen (which is rendered in lovely detail by Blevins, who also did work on the animated DC cartoons of this era.)

Kara saves Zod’s life by using Superman’s Phantom Zone Projector to send him back to his ethereal prison, and within a few panels, she’s back in Metropolis to send Jax-ur and Mala to the Phantom Zone. This leaves Jax-ur and Mala back to their status quo from the animated series, although it does ignore Superman’s reasoning for keeping them out of the Phantom Zone — he viewed it as a form of torture and wanted Jax-ur and Mala to experience America’s more humane justice. There’s only one page left in the story, however, and no time left to explore the issue. Instead, we see Granny punished by Darkseid for failing him, a terrified Zod’s return to the Phantom Zone, and Superman back home in time to see the “Supergirl Saves City” headline from the Daily Planet, all as Kara enjoys her first winter since arriving on Earth.

The Wrap-Up

“Little Girl Lost” is the introduction of Bruce Timm’s Supergirl design, which was later adopted by the comics and served as her standard look in the animated universe for years. Towards the end of “Justice League Unlimited,” Bruce Timm stated a desire to alter her “belly-tee/Doc Martens ‘riot grrrl’ outfit” following a conversation on the Toonzone forums, which convinced him that the look was too rooted in 1990s’ fashion.

Continuity Notes

“Superman Adventures” #21 explicitly states that the Justice League is already active in this continuity (in a comic published three years before their animated debut), with Supergirl even making specific references to the Flash and Aquaman. I know what many of you are thinking — this is a reference to the short-lived (and often reviled) “Adventures in the DC Universe” series, which is assuredly not DCAU canon. Possibly, but also consider that the “Justice League Unlimited” episode “Chaos at the Earth’s Core” reveals that Kara actually spent three years living on the Kents’ farm before making her debut as Supergirl. “Little Girl Lost” never gives you a specific time period, but the flashbacks in “Superman Adventures” #21 certainly could take place over the course of three years. And since it is canon that three years passed between Superman discovering Kara and her becoming Supergirl, that leaves three years of “Superman: The Animated Series” continuity that has to take place in-between the first and second scenes of “Little Girl Lost.”

My theory is that the entire first season of “Justice League” took place during those three years, simultaneously with the majority of “Superman: The Animated Series” episodes. Not only does this explain the occasional references to other heroes in the “Superman Adventures” comic, but also Lois Lane’s reference to Wonder Woman in a first season “Superman: The Animated Series” episode. They know about these characters because Superman has already helped form the Justice League — the audience just didn’t learn of this until after the run of his series was over. Since specific “Superman” continuity wasn’t referenced until after Season One of “Justice League,” I think it’s possible to make most “Superman” episodes occur in-between the first season of “Justice League.” All we need is for someone to explain away that Green Lantern episode, and everything is perfect.

Another continuity issue that you’re likely to notice is Supergirl’s immunity to Kryptonite. This was intended as a unique element of her character in this canon, but was forgotten by the time “Justice League Unlimited” debuted. The official description of the character had her “more resistant” to Kryptonite than Superman, but not nearly as immune as Dorkin/Dyer portray her.

I Love the ‘90s

“Little Girl Lost” attempts to capture a typical “youth” hangout of the era, so Intergang is recruiting at a video arcade.

“Huh?” Moment

Kara’s secret identity really makes no sense in this continuity, and I believe the producers have acknowledged this. She lives for three years with no disguise at all in Smallville, wears a brown wig and glasses when visiting Metropolis for the first time, becomes famous as Supergirl without the wig and glasses, and then goes back to her life in Smallville without the disguise. Why wouldn’t anyone recognize her as Supergirl now? She doesn’t even have a pair of Clark Kent glasses as a disguise. Are we to assume that no one in Smallville has access to media reports from outside the town?

Over the Kiddies’ Heads

The “Fleischer’s Comet” that’s hurtling towards Earth in “Little Girl Lost” is an homage to the Fleischer “Superman” cartoons of the 1940s. Specifically, the episode “The Magnetic Telescope,” which featured a similar climax.

Battle of the Dorkin/Dyer Scripts

Dorkin and Dyer have stated their disappointment with how “Little Girl Lost” turned out, given the heavy rewrites that gutted much of Supergirl’s backstory and totally altered the ending. The finished version offers little payoff to the “kids vs. adults” theme of the first chapter, and doesn’t even allow Supergirl to have a clear victory on her own. She causes a screw-up that Superman must fix, and he ends up rescuing her in the end after she passes out during her big heroic act. “Superman Adventures” #21 (“Last Daughter of Argo”) is a much more coherent story, with a clear arc for Kara, as she overcomes a personal fear and finds peace on her adopted planet. Throughout both stories, Kara is written as a likeable young heroine, and I think we’re all lucky that she escaped the cliched ’90s attempts to give teenage characters “attitude.” Kara’s upbeat and friendly, but still has enough personality to stir up some trouble and have fun. It’s an entertaining take on the character, and a testament to how strong the original concept was…and just how foolish DC was to abandon it for so many years.
