Tumblr media
A century after museum collectors surveyed Colombia’s birds, a new generation of researchers is returning to see what remains, and what has changed for the country’s birds. The team, led by Andrés Cuervo, an ornithologist at Universidad Nacional in Bogotá, has organized six expeditions across Colombia, collecting birds and data for comparison with the data gathered in 1912 for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. The current undertaking, called Alas, Cantos y Colores — Wings, Songs and Colors — is financed by the Colombian government, with the participation of research institutions in Colombia and the U.S. Studies of species from the same place over long periods of time are rare in science, and this resurvey project stands to speak volumes about how tropical birds have responded to changes in land use and climate. A lot has changed in the Caquetá region of Colombia since the museum collectors arrived there in 1912. What was described as “an ocean of forest” at the time has been reduced, after decades of expanded cattle grazing, to mere islands in a sea of pasture. Before arriving, the new bird researchers pored through satellite images in the hope of finding a forest big enough to sustain the kind of avian life they sought. This group comprised 10 Colombian biologists and one American. Half were women, most were in their 20s and 30s, and several lived and worked in the region. Importantly, the specimens they collected would not leave Colombia. Ornithologists like Cuervo had spent much of their careers studying their own country’s birds in foreign museums. The young scientists on this trip, Cuervo hoped, would not have to. Tap the link in our bio to read more. Photos by @historiassencillas.

#Repost @nytimes with @make_repost ・・・ Millions of people have been displaced by the pandemic. 6-year-old Sebastián Ventura and his mother, Jessika Loaiza, are among the many who have yet to find a home.⁣ ⁣ The global health crisis wrought by the coronavirus has played out most visibly in hospitals and cemeteries, its devastating toll clocked in cases and deaths, its aftermath tracked in lost work and shuttered businesses.⁣ ⁣ But a second, less visible aspect of the catastrophe has unfolded on the world’s highways, as millions of migrants — Afghans, Ethiopians, Nicaraguans, Ukrainians and others — have lost work in their adopted countries and headed home.⁣ ⁣ International aid groups have begun to call these people the pandemic’s “stranded migrants” — men, women and children who have been trying to get home since the virus spread. The United Nations said recently there are at least 2.75 million of them.⁣ ⁣ Among the most affected have been people from Venezuela, who even before the pandemic formed one of the largest migration waves in the world. As the oil-rich nation crumbled in the grip of its authoritarian leader, Nicolás Maduro, hunger became widespread and nearly 5 million people fled. But when the virus hit, those Venezuelans living abroad were often the first to lose jobs in their adopted nations, and the first to be evicted from pay-per-day apartments in cities like Lima, Quito and the Colombian capital of Bogotá.⁣ ⁣ Over 6 months, Jessika and Sebastián traveled more than 1,500 miles, nearly all of it on foot — first from Colombia to Venezuela, and then, unable to find a safe harbor, to Colombia again.⁣ ⁣ Tap the link in our bio to read about their long journey and search for home. Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
More migrants, mostly Haitian, are risking everything to negotiate the notorious Darién Gap in Colombia on their way to the U.S. For decades, the Darién Gap — a roadless, lawless stretch of jungle linking South America to the north — was considered so dangerous that only a few thousand people a year were daring, or desperate, enough to try to cross it. But the economic devastation wrought by the coronavirus pandemic in South America was such that in the first nine months of this year, Panamanian officials say, an estimated 95,000 migrants, most of whom are Haitian, attempted the passage on their way to the U.S. They made the journey in shorts and flip-flops, their possessions stuffed in plastic bags, their babies in arms and their children by the hand. It’s uncertain how many made it — and how many didn’t. And yet tens of thousands more are gathered in Colombia, eager for their turn to try. The migrants’ willingness to try to breach the notoriously dangerous land bridge connecting Colombia and Panama — long a deterrent to walking north — presents not only a looming humanitarian disaster among those making the trek, experts said, but also a potential immigration challenge for President Biden in the months to come. “We very well could be on the precipice of a historic displacement of people in the Americas toward the United States,” said Dan Restrepo, the former national security adviser for Latin America under President Barack Obama. “When one of the most impenetrable stretches of jungle in the world is no longer stopping people, it underscores that political borders, however enforced, won’t either.” Now, Necoclí, a small Colombian tourist town just at the mouth of the passage, has become a staging ground for migrants hoping to cross. Thousands of families bide their time in hostels, or in tents along the beach. Hungry and running out of money, all of them are waiting for their turn to be ferried by boat to the edge of the forest. Stories from the Rugged Road with Federico Rios
To see more from Federico, follow @historiassencillas on Instagram.
Horseback, dirt bike, canoe, a tiny plane with a frantically blinking fuel light — this is how the Colombian photographer Federico Rios (@historiassencillas) gets to work in the remote corners of his mountainous country. “To become a photojournalist has been a long path, and it is not easy if you live in South America,” he says. “I’m grateful for lots of friends I have found along this rough way.” Over the years, his travel ordeals became their own stories he explores in tandem with Colombia’s journey from civil war: “I document the way I travel and the people I meet on the trips — stories that otherwise would go untold.”
