14th July 1698, the first ships bound for Darien leave the Kingdom of Scotland for the Isthmus of Panama with around 1,200 people abound. Named the ‘Darien scheme’, those onboard had signed up to be the first settlers of what they believed would be a grand scheme to build a settlement, at the narrowest point between the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans; in order to carry cargo between ships waiting on both sides, to avoid sailing the treacherous Cape at the Southern edge of South America. The plan aimed to revive Scotish finances and colonial prestige, after decades of stagnation and economic hardship. Beset by problems from the outset, as well as hostilities from the English and Spanish, the scheme disintegrated into disease and epidemics, which wiped out the majority of the settlers. The failure of the scheme led to the financial ruin of Scotland, which further lent support to the Act of Union that would join Scotland to England in 1707, leading to the creation of ‘Great Britain’. The answer to this Week’s Mystery History The unwilling pioneer of Gastric Physiology 6th June 1822, American Fur Company employee Alexis St. Martin is accidentally shot in the stomach and treated by US army physician Dr. William Beaumont, who would later become known as the "Father of Gastric Physiology.” St. Martin survived the shooting, but was left with a hole in his stomach, which never fully healed, upon which Beaumont began a series of experiments on digestion; tying a piece of food to a string and inserting it through the stomach hole, removing it every few hours to observe the level of digestion. St. Martin continued to be a test subject until 1833, whereupon Beaumont had conducted around 200 experiments. The following year St. Martin left for Canada, informing Beaumont that he would not be returning. Upon his death in 1880, his body was left to partially decompose by his family in order that no further scientific experiments could not be performed after his death. 14th September 1812, the armies of Napoleon Bonaparte, capture the city of Moscow, after their narrow victory against the Russians at the Battle of Borodino, the deadliest battle of the entire Napoleonic Wars, with the death of 68,000 men. A number that would not be equaled until the First World War. Upon entering the outskirts of the city, Napoleon’s forces discover that the city has been set on fire by the retreating Russians, to deny Napoleon a refuge for the approaching winter. The sabotage scorched earth campaign of burning villages, towns and crops, which had been continuing since the previous August; left Napoleon’s ‘Grande Armée’ totalling 685,000 soldiers, the largest army ever assembled up to that point in history, no choice but to turn back toward Poland the following month. Caught in the brutal Russian winter, facing hypothermia and preyed upon by the guerilla tactics of Cossacks and Peasants, the army was decimated with 27,000 soldiers surviving the campaign, with 380,000 dying and 100,000 captured. “The philosophical study of nature endeavors, in the vicissitudes of phenomena, to connect the present with the past.” ― Alexander Humboldt 14th September 1769, birth of Prussian polymath, geographer, naturalist, romantic philosopher and explorer, Alexander von Humboldt. From 1799 to 1804, Humboldt alongside French explorer and botanist Aimé Bonpland undertook a five year scientific study of South America, after failing to gain permission to join Napoleon Bonaparte's military and scientific invasion of Egypt. Humboldt’s scientific discoveries, and description of the journeys were published over the next twenty one years as ‘Kosmos’. The epic work unified different branches of science into a holistic and romanticized perception of the universe, which operated in connection to every other element as one entity. Humboldt was the first observer of human induced climate change, and also one of the first proponents of the theory that South America and Africa were connected in the distant past. 15th May 1492, end of the Dutch peasants revolt known as the Cheese & Bread rebellion, for the depictions of cheese and bread on the movement's banners. Rebelling against tax oppression, the inhabitants of the towns of Hoorn, Alkmaar and Haarlem stormed and destroyed two castles, killing all tax collectors. The movement was put down on this day by German mercenaries who killed over two hundred peasants. On the same day in 1525….. 15th May 1525, date of the battle of Frankenhausen, and end of the ‘German Peasant War’. Europe’s largest and most widespread popular uprising prior to the French Revolution of 1789. The Peasant War saw between 1524 and 1525, the slaughter of 100,000 poorly armed peasants and farmers led by German preacher and radical theologian of the early Protestant Reformation Thomas Müntzer. The final confrontation of this day, saw the violent put down of the movement with a further 5,000 killed. After the Battle, Thomas Müntzer was captured, tortured and executed.
