Fragments of Hope: Rude Awakening

(This started out as a serious thread on Twitter, but wanted to move it here because I want to try more long-form writing here.  This is directly after the events of SDR2, with Hajime / Izuru tending to the Remnants and attempting their revive them.  In it, Hiyoko is waking up, and coming to terms with the sudden changes after being ripped from the program.  

This was made as a thread between myself and friend @apolarity​, but others are welcome to interact in similar capacities!  I love Remnant and Post-Game DR2 stuff!)

Everyone on this island was so insufferable.  So obnoxious. Bunch of losers. If they weren't a loser, they were an idiot.  If they weren't an idiot, they were a busybody.

That guy who never shuts up about having to take a shit. The chuuni loser that kept animals in his smelly, disgusting muffler. The shark-toothed Forever Alone that screeched like a baby bird every second of every day. It was a pain in the ass before everything went to hell.

Then the bear showed up, and it became a nightmare. The white-haired creep started toying with everyone.  They hogtied and locked him up.  .. Good. The mama's boy shoved a roasting spit through the one with the fat fingers.  The one who threw a party for everyone.

Good. 

 The girl with the red eyes... Oh.  That girl.  

The one who stared through you... never emoting, always speaking in that monotone... did she even blink?  Saionji never saw it happen. She took a metal bat to Mahiru's head.

Let her bleed out.  Dragged her corpse along the dirty floor... Drugged people.  Framed people.  Lied.  Cheated.  Bullied. 

She was skewered by hundreds of swords until she looked like a pincushion. Mouth gaping open as every internal organ ruptured and bled out. She Suffered.

Good.  

And then there was the nurse. Ugly.  Stupid.  Always falling over.  Built like she stumbled out of some brothel and forgot where she was.  Voice like a door that squeaks when its opened. 

 Saionji couldn't stand the sight of her.  The whining.  The crying.

But then suddenly, it was as if the nurse decided that she wasn't obnoxious enough and started trying harder at it. Started talking funny. Started staring out into space for odd lengths of time.  Fingers twitching.  Eyes focused on some far away thing.

Started wandering off by herself. She must have gotten sick like the rest of them.  Sick like Ibuki and Akane. Sick like the white-haired creep. She wasn't going to let it get to her.  She wasn't going to remain some static one-note person.  She would grow.

Having a best friend taken from you will do that. Today, she learned how to tie her own obi.  She was so proud. It was disheveled, uneven... not perfect, but it was something she did.  A sign that she didn't have to accept just being the way she was. She could change.

Mahiru would have wanted that. ... ... There she was again.  The nurse.  Hunched over something, laughing softly in that stupid voice of hers.  What was she even doing here? 

 "Hey, ugly!  Are you following me?  Why don't you go jump off a--"

That was the end of Hiyoko Saionji.  Her avatar, at least. 

The others that remained went on to have their own stories. Some of them even managed to escape. Managed to, by some miracle, keep some part of themselves after the event so insignificant, it wasn't even given a name.

The machine had severed the connections between their bodies and their avatars. The resulting comas left the Remnants of Despair in stasis... limbo. Unable to wake up.  Unable to die. For months, Hajime worked to bring them back.  Plying their talents without rest.

Moving lines of corrupted code. Modifying numbers in a computer to resurrect the dead. It was always a triumph when it worked - a sign that there was still hope. 

Under the glass, a body twitches. The neurons are firing.  A creaking engine coming back to life.  Who would be there to receive her?  To show her how to live a life without despair?  Without the chaos and rust and death of their old life?

Playing catch up on Inktober! My dragon ring was the inspiration behind the Day 12: Dragon prompt. I wanted to draw a Phoenix for Day 13: Ash, but didn't wanna get too carried away with it. I did some Google searching and was inspired by an image of a Phoenix formed by ashes. Had fun with the shading. ^_^ And of course that's Hiyoko Saionji for Day 14: Overgrown. Since she's the shortie of SDR2, I figured I'd draw Hiyoko having outgrown her trademark orange kimono.
