Different views of Asahi-dake, one of Hokkaido's tallest peaks. It hasn't erupted for centuries now but just continuously releases steam. Where this is is 1665m above sea level and it was 10 degrees with a wind velocity that literally took my breath away.
I don't think I'll ever get enough of Hokkaido mountains. There's so much stark beauty and raw power underlying the still, jagged rocks. I wish I could go there again in the summer with all the alpine flowers in full bloom. From the observation deck, you could see the Chuubetsu dam and the sprawling city of Asahikawa below along with quite a good view of Tokachi-dake if the weather permits.
When we went up, the skies were a bit cloudy so we couldn't see the peak. When we were getting ready to go down, the clouds started rolling in and it started raining. I couldn't feel my fingers but I was giddy from the view. I felt like Frodo travelling through Middle Earth.

Natural springwater. People would come & get their water from here. You could drink it straight from the spring. Such a serenely beautiful walk leading up to it too

Aoi-ike (Blue pond), Biei, Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido, Japan
Some years past, the local government wanted to take measures to divert a possible mudflow in case Tokachi-dake would erupt. Aoi-ike was one of these diversions and the pond formed from the overflow of the adjacent river. The characteristic blue-green color comes from the mineral-rich water containing magnesium, sulfur & aluminum reflecting the sky and the decaying birches.
If it looks familiar, Apple made this into a wallpaper. :)
