Usually, more than 120 million Hindu devotees participate in Kumbh Mela, making it one of the largest religious gatherings in the world. It is a central pilgrimage and festival of Hinduism, celebrated at four different Indian riverbank sites – the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers, and on the banks of the Ganga, the Godavari and the Shipra rivers – in a 12-year cycle. The main highlight of this event is the ritual dipping into or bathing in the water combined with a prayer. This is believed to liberate the devotee from the cycle of rebirths or result in atonement and penance for mistakes and sins committed. The motivations for bathing might be different, but the water quality of the rivers, especially the Ganges at Kanpur, India, is life-threatening due to discharge of untreated sewage, effluents, drainage, etc. into the Ganga River. River pollution on the rise In India, the majority of the rivers are absolutely filthy. According to a 2019 study issued by the Central Pollution Control Board, a statutory organization under the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the number of polluted stretches in the rivers has increased from 301 to 351 in the past two years. The number of critically polluted ones has even risen from 34 to 45. Among them is also the largest river on the Indian subcontinent, the Ganga. It is considered the sixth-most polluted river in the world. Long-term cleaning attempts The disastrous water quality of the Ganga is, however, not a new issue. In the 1980s, the Ganga Action Plan was launched to clean the river. Sewage treatment plants were built in the three most populous provinces along the river, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. In a similar project, other sewage treatment plants were added along the river in the 1990s. Over the years, the population along the Ganges has rapidly increased, resulting in more sewage. In Kanpur, India, lots of tanneries producing tannery wastewater and effluents, which contain fibrous material such as fats, skin, hair, sewage, and the like, discharge this waste into the Ganges due to pumping issues with the old pumps they still have installed. Finally, a number of new governmental initiatives and programs were introduced to sustainably tackle this pollution issue over the past ten years. In 2009, the National Ganges River Basin Authority was founded to take a more holistic approach to cleaning the basin and maintaining free flow in the river. This authority was later disbanded and succeeded by the National Mission for Clean Ganges (NMCG) in October 2016. The aim is to clean the Ganges and its tributaries thoroughly and effectively. In 2014, the Namami Gange (meaning Salutations to Ganga) program was launched to clean the river. Additionally, the Ministry of Water Resources was renamed to the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganges Rejuvenation to further underline the seriousness of intentions to improve the water quality there. Clean Ganga Mission for Kumbh Mela

In the Clean Ganga Mission for Kumbh Mela, the scope of supply consisted of four Andritz self-priming pumps from the AD series and eleven Andritz single-stage centrifugal pumps from the ACP series. In addition to these long-term programs, the Government Department of India for Uttar Pradesh strengthened the Clean Ganga Mission for Kumbh Mela well ahead of the religious event, which took place from January 15 to March 4, 2019. A major stimulus behind this initiative was a report by the Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board stating that the River Ganges at Prayagraj is unsafe for bathing both upstream and downstream. The report showed that the water contains extremely high levels of coliform bacteria, mostly fecal coliform. Large numbers of such coliform bacteria can lead to water-borne diseases such as diarrhea. To quickly improve this situation and ensure safe Ganges water for the devotees visiting Kumbh Mela 2019 at Prayagraj, the National Mission to Clean Ganga made additional funds available and the State Mission for Clean Ganga of Uttar Pradesh took various measures to treat the wastewater discharged into the river. These included release of extra water upstream at the Tehri dam in Uttarakhand on the one hand and the temporary closure of heavily polluting tanneries in Kanpur, a city located upstream of Prayagraj. On the other hand, the main target of this mission was to replace old pumps in the effluent pumping stations along the river in Kanpur. These pumps are not able to effectively handle today’s waste and thus, they break down regularly. To tackle this issue and prevent untreated wastewater from flowing into the Ganges, existing effluent pumping stations were renovated with new pumps. The award specifications for supply of the pumps to the effluent treatment plants were quite strict: a tight delivery time of three months and the capability to handle fibrous liquids with a density of up to 1300 kg/m3. Thanks to its ability to ensure fast delivery and commissioning within the given period as well as fulfilling the pumps’ technical requirements, Andritz was awarded the contract to manufacture and supply 15 new pumps, including 4 self-priming pumps to seven pumping stations in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Thus, these pumps are suitable for conveying many different media, allowing them to be installed as process pumps in a wide range of industrial applications from pulp and paper to water supply and wastewater treatment. A modular system ensures high availability, enables the use of proven components and reduces the number of spare parts to be held in stock. To round off the pumps order, Andritz self-priming pumps from the AD series achieve high priming and degassing performance thanks to their integrated vacuum pump. With its open impeller, the pump is designed for and insensitive to transporting high solids-containing media or even viscous media. The open impeller also provides better efficiencies with viscous media compared to closed impellers. The integrated vacuum pump prevents air from collecting at the impeller inlet and guarantees that the pump primes well, even with high gas content or unfavorable suction pipe arrangements. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (also known as Mahatma Gandhi) had received his education in London. He had been a barrister (attorney ). In 1893, he went to South Africa. After Gandhi was thrown off a train since he was a coloured man sitting in a seat that was first-class, he took that emotion and utilized it to begin to resist the injustices that many people of colour faced at the time. He became successful and the authorities of South Africa eliminated most of these rules and restrictions. Gandhi led the Salt March, an act of protest. When Gandhi returned to India in 1915, few people understood him. Under the leadership of Gandhi, Indians began to use a different method to get freedom during the upcoming few decades. On 8th August 1942, the leaders of the Indian National Congress Party fulfilled in Bombay (Mumbai). The leaders adopted a policy to force the British out of India. Gandhi's motto"Do or Die" became a national slogan, along with the movement became the Quit India Movement. Many people started the movement in several places in India. But in a few places, the movements turned violent. Gandhi refused to eat until the violence ceased. He was successful in stopping the violence. The British action was very quick. They arrested over 100,000 people. They levied fines on many people. They dropped bombs on the people who demonstrated against the British Raj. The British arrested all of the leaders of the Congress Party. Gandhi's wife, Kasturba Gandhi, died during detention, in addition to his secretary Mahadev Desai. Gandhi's health had become quite bad. In 1944, the British set him free fearing that Gandhi's death might bring about a very large protest by Indians. Gandhi continued to oppose both the British and demanded that all other leaders be set free. The Second World War had reduced the economic, political, and military strength of the British Empire. They were also aware that following the war Indians would start a bigger movement for independence. The disposition of the British people and the British Army had changed. Following the Second World War, most of these were no longer willing to support the British ruling class in India. That position was now clear to the leaders of the United Kingdom. By early 1946, those leaders set free all the political prisoners held in India and started independence talks with the Indian National Congress Party. On the 14th of August 1947, Pakistan gained independence and a day later on the 15th of August India gained its independence as well (Our independence day). Gandhi with Lord and Lady Mountbatten, 1947: On midnight of 15th August 1947, Britain handed India its formal political Independence. A brief time then, Gandhi, that was aging and sick, died from a bullet fired by a Hindu extremist named Nathuram Godse. The national direction was subsequently passed to his main lieutenant, Jawaharlal Nehru. On 3rd June 1947, the Viceroy Lord Mountbatten announced partition of India into two states: the union of India, and an Islamic Pakistan. Ravish Kumar and the Conscience of India

I spent the entire morning today watching different reports from India in light of the elections, set to start in two weeks. I began with Neha Dixit’s excellent piece in the Wire on the wage gap for women employed to cook mid day school meals in Bihar and the state’s assumption that low caste, low income women cooking for 400 children should be considered an act of volunteerism. Then I read Time Magazine’s piece on Journalists facing the most pressing threats around the world. This led me to watch an NDTV show with Vishnu Som, Ravish Kumar, Rana Ayuub and Swati Chaturvedi on organized threats on the lives of Indian journalists. 

I realized that I feel strongly about the threat to Indian journalists. From the Feburary 16th episode in JNU, I know that the situation of press freedom is dire in India. Journalists were threatened, assaulted and abused for suggesting that the state intrusion into the campus was unwarranted.  The press was perhaps always under attack, even during the previous governments, but what Ravish Kumar describes as the rise of “godi media” funded and protected by the government while those critical of the state are trolled through concerted efforts of ruling dispensation appears to be a distinctly BJP phenomenon. 

Since the Bihar elections of 2015, I've found Ravish Kumar's journalism to be the most useful, insightful and critical in thinking about Indian politics and governmental structures. Salik Shah and I ran into Kumar at the India Habitat Centre in Delhi around October 2015, we thanked him for his work on Bihar and asked him why he hadn’t reported on the Nepali madhesh during the blockade. Kind enough, he explained that not having enough personnel was a major issue but I think he did speak about it at some point afterwards. But when I was in Varanasi in 2017-2018 I really turned to Kumar make sense of the region that was my new home. As I began to see the harsh realities of living in an old crumbling city in a populous state, I also began to feel deeply connected to the culture and spirit of the Gangetic plains. Kumar’s episode on Chhath of 2017 was particularly crucial in making feel connected to the Gangetic plains. I had just arrived in the holy city with the hopes that I would do all kinds of research on Nepalis in Banaras. But I began to feel that the Nepalis who were hidden in the layers of history and the lanes of Pancha Ganga Ghat need not be my only concern. I could also try to understand the larger rhythm of the city, it’s major festivals, the daily scenes at Assi ghat nearby. 

On the day that Ravish Kumar aired his Chatth episode of 2017, I had gone to see Chhath in Assi ghat. I was teaching a course on ritual and pilgrimage and the worship of the sun on the banks of a river and the offerings to an indigenous goddess called “Chhathi devi” had added meaning. What also had added meaning was that I was from a fairly racist plain-hating city of Kathmandu. The low-key Chhath celebrations in the tiny Rani Pokhari in the middle of my hometown never became opportunities to celebrate the festival.  In Banaras, free to witness, understand, and participate, for the first time, I had acquired a festival that I wasn’t born into. Kumar’s episode was a reminder that this festival in the Gangetic plains connected people across the world to that geography and that culture and there were songs and rituals that made life meaningful.

Then I started watching Kumar’s university and employment series. I was living with a young woman from rural UP, struggling to find her foot in her new job as an assistant instructor. Intense family pressure on finding a government-teaching job made her repress her fashion designing dreams as she sat for the State-level B.Ed exams to please her father. I don’t know if any of her results ever came out in the course of that year. But it was easier for me to understand the milieu that shaped her decisions and her temperaments in light of Kumar’s reports on vacancies in colleges and schools, pending appointment letters and the rising frustration among the youth in the country. One of Kumar’s insights has been that, by mobilizing Hindutva’s ideology, the ruling dispensation has turned the frustrated youth into “dangai” or people who walk the street with a regressive majoritarian agenda of a Hindu nation, ready to kill and maim, rape and pillage in the name of dharam/dharma. Kumar constantly reminded audiences of the gaps between BJP’s 2014 promises of employment and economic growth and the harsh reality of the lives of men and women struggling for jobs and dignity in the Hindi heartland. Whilst in Banaras, I remember watching his episode on Bharatendu Harischandra College, as I was teaching a class on Harischandra’s place in the history of the city and his contribution to the Hindi language along with an episode on the Ganga. What I guess, I am trying to say is that these Prime Time episodes made it possible to understand issues that plagued the city that I was living in that I would otherwise perhaps not known about. Speaking of Hindi, Kumar’s biggest gift to me is the gift of the Hindi language. Mildly laced with an Eastern UP, Western Bihar accent, Ravish Kumar’s Hindi is a reminder that speaking and learning a language means to take note on how to use it playfully. His short love stories (laprek: Laghu Prem Kathaa) Ishq Mein Shahar Hona, is delightful in its irony, in its pain and in its hope. I recommend it to anyone who hasn’t read it. Over the last few years, Ravish Kumar has been constantly trolled, threatened and abused by those who do not agree with him. In the past year or so, I've felt that his reportage expressed a sense of wariness even as he continued to speak on all critical issues. In his recent Prime Time episode on the Indian National Congress' manifesto, his voice sounded more confident and more robust. This doesn't mean he is less critical. Ravish Kumar's skepticism of the Congress is very much alive and healthy. It only suggests that he is hopeful that with a manifesto, there are real grounds, issue-based, agenda-based grounds on which to argue, debate and discuss. 2019 is probably in BJP's pockets but the question is what is the long term implications of BJP's rule on India's democracy, governance structure and republican values? 

I've met several educated young Indians here in Chicago that are intent on voting for the Modi government and defensive of the Hindutva-centric majoritarian politics of the BJP. They keep insisting that they know what is best for their country. The implication being that I am an outsider who doesn't know anything. But the point is, the economic, agrarian, political and particularly environmental issues in India are important to us all. It is for many more reasons that I need not explain to anyone, important to me. So I listen to Ravish Kumar, I watch his shows. I know for a fact that many of us Nepalis really tend to think of India as this block of space contiguous to our Terai where we can project all our fears, hatred, anxiety of invasion, disgust and, of course, not the least, desire. This process of “othering” India, turns it into a essential solid mass, a bounded entity in the same way that Modi who blockaded Nepal, wants to do with the country. India is not that subcontinent of darkness. There is Bollywood, there is Modi, there is this and that, and there is Ravish Kumar— a kind of conscience rooted in a language and geography that has participated in the creation of universal values, whether we are willing to admit it or not. All I wonder is whether those adamant to vote for the Hindu right, those who threaten this journalist, actually upon watching an episode of Ravish Kumar, deep in their heart, feel that he is really the voice they ought to listen to. In other words, what is the place from which the hater spews anger? What is their locus of enunciation? The hater is perhaps not self reflexive to realize this, but it has to be that very place of the loss of opportunity, dignity and democratic participation that Kumar has identified as the locus of hatred.

The Rise of Fake News And What It Means Today

On the eve of Holi this year, Surf Excel released an advertisement, which aimed at promoting communal harmony. The lyrics of the jingle glorified the festival in the popular sentiment of “Bura na mano holi hai” by crooning that even “enemies” turn friendly on this festival. While Hindustan Unilever, owner of Surf Excel received a lot of flak for this advertisement – for reasons as unsettling as the ad promotes love jihad and “humiliates Hindus” and “shames Muslim children” – the ad also made headlines for another (almost comical) reason.

Soon after the ad received hate on social media, there was seen to be a surge of low ratings on Google Play for Microsoft Excel – which did not have anything to do with the ad or its content. Users had confused the popular detergent brand with the Microsoft Excel app. This, however, isn’t the first time such a comedy of errors has taken place – last year, inflammatory statements were made by social media Snapchat’s CEO, Evan Spiegel about how Snapchat is an application for “rich people only”. But any dissatisfaction and criticism was faced by the online shopping app Snapdeal.

While the aforementioned incidents were definitely more trivial issues, in the last few years, terms like chequebook journalism, post-truth politics and fake news have become significantly notorious in popular culture. Chequebook journalism implies bribing journalists and reporters for spreading a certain piece of news to deceive the readers; post-truth politics is playing out news in a way that appeals to people’s emotions, and involves an unsaid, but firm dismissal of factual rebuttals; and fake news is junk news that is not true, but is used for false glorification or defamation of the involved parties, depending on what the news is saying. What is this growing phenomenon indicative of? What does it signify in the era of fast news that travels at the speed of light, and that has the potential to cause harm which is difficult to retract because of the Internet? The interplay between the aforementioned terms, especially the way it is unfolding today, shouldn’t just be interesting – it should be alarming.

it is a phenomenon which has been making its presence felt, especially today, in the milieu of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in India and elections in several other countries around the world.

Only last month, the Huffington Post published an expose on a similar issue – right before the Lok Sabha Elections in 2014, Narendra Modi, the then Prime Ministerial candidate and Amit Shah, his trusted aide and the President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, planned to start an NGO for acid attack survivors which would eventually be used as a secret method to garner votes for Modi in the upcoming elections. His campaign advisor, Prashant Kishor and his wife would play an important role in this exercise. Modi and Shah would not obviously be related to the NGO – they would be behind-the-scenes, in order to ward off any suspicion or questions. The modus operandi of the NGO would be to track and code poll data and user profiles and use the same to manipulate people to vote for the BJP by spreading content targeted for specific audience profiles. However, after their unprecedented win in the 2014 elections, the Modi-Shah duo discarded this experiment, until the Bihar state elections in 2015 which was a phenomenal loss for the BJP.
