I have a lot to say this year but I want to start by reflecting on last year's post. Waiting a year to review my old thoughts, really puts into perspective how much difference a year can make. And what a year it has been. My daughter is still growing, beautifully, and authentically, and has developed so many traits that are clearly from her mother or myself. She is also far less shy, and is truly the joy of our lives and the product of our hearts. What a pleasure it is to be her father. We also decided today (coincidentally) that we want to expand our family and bring another child into the world. So next year's post may come with news of a new addition to our family. 

My wife’s promotion did not happen, and her work situation is in a chaotic state. Her closest friend at work recently resigned because of the toxic work environment and things that were promised to my wife to entice her to accept this position and move to this area may not happen as promised. Who knows how this plays out but, something I hoped for but never thought possible may come to fruition. This city may not be our long term home, and we may move to another city after all. 

Personally, I actually joined our local police advisory committee, a long time ambition of mine. I am also considering becoming the chairman of the board of directors of the local community action agency that I have worked with for the past few years. I have not found any hobbies or interests over the past year that I really enjoy,  so using my skills in this capacity has been incredibly rewarding and makes up for my lack of hobbies. It may be a longshot, but I  really hope I get that Board Chairman position next year.

As for my goal of living a healthier life in 2023, for the first time  in all the years that I have said that I wanted to cut back on my drinking and get healthier, I can finally say that I did it. I didn’t cut back entirely, but I genuinely feel good about my physical health for the first time in a while. I’ve cut back my drinking significantly, and regularly go days without thinking about or wanting to drink at all. I have taken more proactive steps to eat heal;thier, and hope I can take more steps towards clean living next year. I didn’t do a terrible amount of exercise this year (aside from what I do while taking care of my daughter), so improving in that aspect while continuing the progress I have made with my eating and drinking habits, will be my health goals for next year. But I am genuinely happy with my health for the first time in a long time. I also went to the physical therapist this year for chronic shoulder pain that resulted from a broken shoulder a few years back, and the therapy and exercises they provided me with have made a meaningful difference in my life. I want to continue those exercises next year, and throughout the rest of my life moving forward.

This past year was surprisingly eventful. Trips to St. Louis, Miami, Grenada, and the Indian Dunes for friends weddings and family vacations. My parents also came to Peoria to visit and got to meet my daughter for the first time. So did Dillon, which I never would have imaged. Speaking of Dillion; Anthony, Dillon, and I took a trip to San Antonio for a college football game. What a fun time, and we plan on doing something similar every year, which will really make me happy. As much as I have come to settle into my life as it is, I genuinely miss being around those guys on a regular basis. During this trip to San Antonio, I also ran into Catherine. Wow. It’s been ten years and this chance encounter still led to a rush of emotions. We only spoke for a few minutes as I was leaving the stadium but catching up with her, and having one last conversation really gave me some closure I didn’t even think I needed. I am happy she is doing well, but feel more reassured than ever that we were not meant to be together.

I have also thought about Sean a few times this year. Each time, it still makes me sad, and I want to be a healthier person. If not for me, for my daughter, and for my other future child. We only get one ;life to live, and I want to be active and present for as long as possible in the lives of those I care about. This is feeling even more poignant now, as I found out that my dad has Alzheimer's. Although he has not officially been diagnosed, he has started taking medication, and it makes sense. I suspected there was some memory loss and mental decline on his part, but (wishfully) chalked it up to him getting older. His mother has Alzheimer's right now too and that has made me incredibly fearful of my future. In fact, I have been thinking about this a lot since I found out. I/m scared both for what my family will go through in the next few years, and scared of what my future may hold. I REALLY do not want to go out like that.

So for next year, I want to continue my focus on my health and I want to take additional steps to improve my health; such as further improving my eating habits and incorporating cardio into my weekly routine. I also want to develop a closer relationship with my wife and daughter. As much as I love them, and try to show them, I still feel like I am not showing it as much as I can on a regular basis. Life is short, and I want them to know unequivocally, how much I love them, and I want to show them with my words and actions, each day how much they mean to me. My greatest legacy in life will not be some professional accomplishment, but how much I have impacted the lives of those I care most about. 

I also want to take a further step back and stop looking for jobs/career opportunities. I have to fully lean into being a stay at home dad if I want to be the best father and husband I can be. It’s hard because I am not wired that way, and I have dedicated so much time and effort to my careers, but I really think this is what is best for me and my family. Especially If we bring another child into the world this year. I’ll continue the community involvements I have right now so that I have something mentally stimulating to distract me from time to time, and I hope I end up as the PCCEO board chair, but I have to stop thinking about professional possibilities right now if I want o be all that I can be for my family.

Lastly, although this is a yearly reflection, I have also reflected on where I was five years ago. I will do this again, but I also want to go back twenty years. Five years ago, I had just proposed to my wife and had no idea what the future might hold. It was probably the first full year of happiness and hope I had had in a while, and things were looking bright. Even so, I had no idea what the next five years would hold. A move to a new city, reconnection with close friends (DJ), a myriad of career pursuits and endeavors. And of course our dream home, and sweet baby girl. This was the dream I hoped would come true five years ago, and it all happened. So I am incredibly happy to look back and realize this. 

I also wanted to go back to 2004. Next year will mark twenty years since my family moved to this country. So many times that first year I felt alone and out of place, but that move changed my life. I often wonder what would have been if we would have stayed in that profoundly poor, rural home in an undeveloped country. I’ve googled my former classmates to see where they ended up, and I envisioned all the possible scenarios which would have allowed me to still make my way to the United States. But truthfully, I don’t know if any of those things would have been possible, or even within my contemplation back then, and I know my life would have been so different if I stayed back there. I suffered from so much depression, and was bullied regularly. I hated life, and saw no path to long term happiness. Even if I managed to make it to the United States, I doubt I would have been able to live the life I lived over the past twenty years. There were some rough times, but I am incredibly happy with the way my life has turned out, and I owe it all to my parents' decision to come to the United States  twenty years ago. So I will end this post with immense gratitude to my parents and with an enormous amount of happiness as I look back on that day when I stepped off of that plane and forever changed the trajectory of my life.

“We’re going to do everything we can to stretch the pipeline. But at the end of the day there are only so many patients you can push through at a given time,” said Carmela Coyle, chief executive of the California Hospital Association.

Coyle said she was particularly concerned that hospitals across the Southwest are all being pressured at the same time — or are bracing for it — making it more challenging for them to help one another.

“Our systems are built to address emergencies that are localized or regionalized. But in a pandemic like this, everybody is stressed,” she said. “Places cannot send help and assistance when everyone is bracing for the same experience.”

Across Texas, mayors of some of the state’s biggest cities — including Houston and Austin — are so worried about staffing needs at local hospitals that they have asked for the authority to reimpose stay-at-home orders.

Bill McKeon, CEO of Texas Medical Center, said his massive hospital complex has room for more covid-19 patients — in a normal year they see 10 million people. But even they can’t handle a surge that goes on forever, largely because of staffing. “Hopefully we’re peaking; we’re hoping it’s not the new normal. That’s the real concern the strain this puts on any hospital system,” he said. “No place can have endless capacity.”

The current crisis across the Sun Belt recalls the early days of the pandemic in New York City, when overwhelmed hospitals canceled all but the most urgent surgeries, brought infected medical workers back without two-week quarantines and declined to attempt resuscitation on some patients who had stopped breathing or went into cardiac arrest.

The military stepped in then, too, but struggled to scale up makeshift facilities fast enough to ease the burden.

“It’s very intense,” said Cindy Zolnierek, CEO of the Texas Nurses Association. “When you have demands that exceed your resources, it’s not a good place to be.”

Ambulances are sometimes stuck waiting at emergency rooms because a hospital has no capacity for another patient. Rural hospitals, she said, can be overwhelmed when even a few fall ill with covid-19.

Zolnierek said the nurses association is advocating for the state to adopt crisis standards of care, which allows hospitals to triage resources based on patients’ likelihood of survival. Several localities in the state have already begun putting such plans in place, she said.

“If you don’t have enough resources, you do have to make very difficult decisions, even in terms of who gets the ICU bed,” Zolnierek said.

Darrell Pile, CEO of the SouthEast Texas Regional Advisory Council, said that has not been necessary in part because the state asked and received the same military support that came to New York.

But, he said, “there are multiple hospitals on saturation, which means they are indicating to our ambulance companies that they are full.”

To meet the surge, some hospitals are reopening vacant wings or putting more beds in the emergency room or recovery rooms.

Arizona has already moved to a crisis-care model, although Arizona Medical Association President Ross Goldberg said he did not believe any hospitals had yet had to triage care at patients’ expense. Hospitals in other cities that became overwhelmed were able to transfer patients to Phoenix, where Goldberg practices surgery at Maricopa Medical Center.

“Any hospital is used to pushing volume when they need to,” Goldberg said. “We’re almost moving the ceiling as we go.”

His biggest concern is not equipment, but people.

“We’re really worried about running through our staff,” he said. “You can put physical beds anywhere. But do you have quality people to man them?”

The well-being of those people is also a serious concern, said Saskia Popescu, a University of Arizona epidemiologist, who noted that a fast-climbing death toll has damaged the morale of exhausted doctors and nurses.

“[Medical workers] have been doing this since February, March. They’re tired and right around the time we were hoping things would slow down is when we reopened and started to see this massive spike,” she said.

Health-care workers are also starting to get sick themselves, she said, as the virus spreads: “Staff are part of the community, and when you have transmission in the community that also impacts them.”

Goldberg said many Arizonans still refuse to accept that the virus is real and dangerous. One of his surgical patients fired him, he said, after he went on television to advocate mask-wearing.

Most states now have rules requiring that masks be worn in public, with the governors of Colorado and Arkansas on Thursday making their states the latest to adopt such restrictions. The governors of Arizona and Florida — both Republicans — have pointedly refused to join in.

Late Wednesday, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) went so far as to strike down mask ordinances adopted by local authorities, a decision condemned by mayors and health experts.

National retailers continued Thursday to join the ranks of those that insist on masks: Publix, one of the largest supermarket chains across the South, said shoppers will be required to wear face coverings. Walmart, Kroger and Kohl’s had all said the same earlier this week. Many have cited the strain on health systems from raging covid-19 outbreaks.

Those outbreaks are not only hitting the biggest of the Sun Belt states. They are increasingly impacting smaller states with rural populations that had once been relatively insulated.

In Mississippi, 10 ICUs have no beds available and the lack of capacity “is harming patient care,” state Health Officer Thomas Dobbs said at a news conference.

Tim Moore, president of the Mississippi Hospital Association, said that, as in other states, the leading concern was not beds but people, although gloves and face shields have also been in short supply.

“We’re going to use a lot of hospital beds in Mississippi that have not been used in a long time,” he said, especially in rural areas.

Moore said he heard from one hospital where a patient waited in the emergency room for three days because there was no space for him in the ICU.

Mississippi is trying to bring in more nurses, but they are competing with other Southern states and wages are rising fast. Moore said one company has offered contract nurses $100 an hour — twice the normal rate and more than any hospital in Mississippi can afford to pay.

As for the nurses already in the state, many are nearing a breaking point.

“We’ve worn people down,” Moore said. “I’m real worried. The stress level, the emotional strain that our health-care professionals are starting to experience is going to start showing. You can only do this for so long.”

Many arrestees are facing possible sentences of years in prison or even life sentences.

 In a dangerous attack on our right to protest, Attorney General William Barr in a recent conference call with U.S. attorneys across the country even encouraged sedition charges be widely used against anti-racist protestors. Sedition means conspiracy and intent to overthrow the U.S. government and can result in life imprisonment. 

The Socialist Unity Party has issued an appeal to all revolutionary left organizations and activists to unite in defense of those facing repression from the capitalist state and its allies in the white supremacist-fascist movement. (Read the appeal in English or Spanish)

San Diego   

Denzel Draughn, a well-known San Diego anti-racist activist and supporter of the African People’s Socialist Party, was arrested Aug. 28 at a demonstration in solidarity with the movement in Kenosha, Wis., calling for justice for Jacob Blake, who was shot seven times in the back by police. Draughn is charged based on the ridiculous claim that he pepper-sprayed nine cops. He is facing 19 felony charges as a result. The allegations stem from an incident when a group of demonstrators tried to defend themselves against a violent police assault. Ten people were arrested, but Draughn has been singled out for the harshest treatment. At the request of San Diego cops, his bail is set at the outrageous amount of $750,000 – an amount usually reserved for kidnapping or murder.

Denver 

On Sept. 17, police agencies in the Denver area arrested anti-racist organizers in a coordinated assault. Russell Ruch was arrested while in a parking lot at a Home Depot. An hour later, five police cars surrounded and arrested Lillian House while she was driving. That afternoon, S.W.A.T. teams arrived at Joel Northam’s home and arrested him. Eliza Lucero has also been arrested. All four are members of the Party for Socialism and Liberation and organizers of protests to demand justice for Elijah McClain, who was brutally murdered by the Aurora Police Department. They are still in jail, with the exception of one person, and face multiple felony charges and years in prison in an obvious frame-up aimed at stopping the movement for justice for Elijah McClain.

Tallahassee, Fla. 

On Sept. 5, Tallahassee police and Leon County sheriffs attacked a peaceful Black Lives Matter demonstration. After pulling a Black woman organizer from her car, 300 police attacked around 75-100 protesters. Fourteen were arrested on the spot and five more have been arrested since, including members of the Students for a Democratic Society and Freedom Road Socialist Organization. The majority are facing multiple charges, including felonies, that could result in fines of $10,000 and 10 years in prison. Others face up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine for each misdemeanor they’re charged with. The demonstration was to protest a grand jury decision not to indict the police officers who murdered Tony McDade, Mychael Johnson and Wilburn Woodard. The three were gunned down by Tallahassee police in March and May of this year.

Portland, Ore.

The battle against police racism is raging in Portland. Nightly demonstrations have entered their fourth month. Since the end of May, hundreds have been arrested. In August, hoping to quell the protests, incoming Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt dropped charges against protestors. Demonstrations continued to challenge systemic racism, arrests and brutality continued, and charges have become more severe. On Aug. 27, a news release by the U.S. Attorney’s District of Oregon office announced that it is going ahead with prosecutions of 100 people who were arrested since May, many by Trump’s federal officers. Seventy-four of them are facing felonies that could result in prison sentences of years. A Sept. 5 NPR audit of the felony charges concludes that the actions protestors were accused of and arrested for were minor and should never have resulted in felonies.

Oklahoma City

In Oklahoma, where the entire Black community of Tulsa was burned in 1919, and where a white supremacist attack killed 168 people in 1995, Oklahoma County District Attorney Lewis Prater has charged three teenagers, Malachai Davis, Haley Lin Crawford and Sydney Lynch – as well as two other participants in protests against the police murder of George Floyd -- with terrorism. The bond amounts for a dozen other arrestees are between $200,000 and $1 million. The harshest treatment has been directed at those arrestees who are African American. Terrorism convictions could mean years or even decades in prison for charges that should have been misdemeanors. In May, DA Prater refused to charge cops who killed Isaiah Lewis during a mental health crisis in September 2019. When 42-year-old Derrick Scott was in custody of Oklahoma City cops in May 2019, he told them he couldn’t breathe and asked for his medicine. The cop’s response was “I don’t care.” Scott died soon afterward, but Prater brought no charges against those cops either. In August of this year, James Harmon was shot in the head by cops, also in Prater’s jurisdiction, and there is no indication that charges will be brought against the cops who killed him.

Salt Lake City

In Salt Lake City, a group of protestors are charged with felony criminal mischief. District Attorney Sim Gill added a “gang enhancement,” which could mean life sentences for seven people who were protesting Gill’s decision not to file charges against two SLC cops who shot Bernardo Palacios-Carbajal in the back and killed him. Gill justifies the gang enhancement by saying the activists conspired to splash red paint and break the windows of a building. The gang enhancement is an inherently racist feature of the criminal justice system, and the fact that it is being used against people protesting police murders of people of color is a further travesty of justice. More than 30 others in Salt Lake City have been hit with serious charges stemming from recent anti-racist demonstrations, including some felonies.

Miami

Jonathon Gartrelle, a leading gay, African American, anti-racist activist in Miami, is charged with strong-arm robbery and escape – both felonies – as well as two misdemeanors. Jonathon is accused of removing two Trump flags from parked vehicles and dropping them on the ground while counter-protesting at a pro-Trump caravan. Gartrelle himself was hit by an SUV, which drove away and was not pursued by the cops, who are falsely claiming that Gartrelle declined to press charges. Gartrelle wanted to press charges but refused to go with them in a police cruiser to fill out a report at a precinct.
