Honda Cars India starts production of new City sedan
New Delhi: Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL), on Tuesday has announced that it has commenced production of fifth generation Honda City sedan at the company's Greater Noida plant in Uttar Pradesh.
As the automaker claims, Honda City is one of its most successful cars in India with high brand equity. It was first introduced in India back in January 1998 and later launched as 2nd generation in November 2003. The third generation model came in September 2008, while fourth generation City was launched in January 2014.

How Tesla Delivered Despite Lockdowns

2019 Datsun Go, Go+ CVT review, test drive
Paired to a CVT gearbox, the Go and Go Plus are touted to offer a superior automatic driving experience to rivals. But can the Datsuns hold up to that promise?
What are they?
Japanese automaker Nissan gave new life to the Datsun nameplate in 2014 by relaunching it as a budget brand, starting with the Go hatchback, followed by the Go Plus 7-seater the following year. Although priced competitively, both models felt too basic and unappealing to the Indian public, and the brand failed to make a dent in the highly competitive entry-level segment. 
However, Datsun and Datsun South Africa, and introduced a major facelift for the Go and Go Plus late last year that gave them a new lease on life. The update brought with it revised styling, better interiors and more equipment to improve the vehicles’ position amongst rivals. Safety features like dual airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist, seatbelt reminder and rear parking sensors were also made standard. And earlier this year, the carmaker also introduced the option of Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) on the top-spec variants of the Go and Go Plus, making them the most affordable cars in the country with this feature. 
What didn't change was the powertrain, with both cars being available with only a 68hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine and a manual gearbox. Now, however, the growing popularity of automatics has prompted the introduction of CVT auto variants.
With the 2018 facelift, the Datsun Go’s body structure was reinforced for better crash-test compliance, and with this update, the company claims to have bettered it, with structural reinforcements to the front, sides and the roof. Pedestrian protection has been improved as well, and these updates translate to a 40kg increase in kerb weight.  
Apart from the new gear selector and the absence of a pedal, the interior hasn’t changed, but interestingly, there’s a new touchscreen unit. It’s still a 7.0-inch unit, but now has physical buttons for volume control and voice commands, making it more convenient to operate while on the go. 
What are they like to drive?
While rivals in the Go’s segment (Tiago, WagonR, Celerio and Santro) make use of the more cost-effective AMT auto transmission, Datsun has opted for a CVT in its Datsun car range, which is generally a smoother and more premium offering. The closest rival for the Go Plus – its cousin, the Triber – is yet to get an automatic gearbox, but when it does, it'll likely be an AMT. Moreover, the 68hp, 1.2-litre petrol engine powering the manual variants has been uprated to 77hp for the CVT trims. So how does it all work?
The cars work well in slow-moving traffic, creeping off the line smoothly without accelerator input and setting off smartly once you do accelerate. With gentle, part-throttle inputs, the CVT makes for a smooth and progressive build of speed, which is significantly better than the inconsistent and jerky power delivery seen in the AMTs of rivals.
However, if you prod the accelerator even a bit harder, the gearbox starts to fumble. There is a sharp increase in revs without a corresponding rise in speed, and if you floor the throttle, the effect is far worse. This rubberband effect, which is more pronounced here than what you might find in more expensive CVT applications, means that executing quick overtaking manoeuvres requires some prudence. Moreover, since the engine revs without progress, the noise in the cabin becomes all too apparent.
While some CVT units provide the option of manually shifting between the predefined ‘steps’ of the transmission using the gear lever or paddleshifters, the Datsun gearbox isn’t one of them. Sport mode, which can be engaged by a button on the gear lever, does keep the engine on the boil, but the gain in performance isn’t that significant. Truth be told, you can’t really feel the 9hp bump in power in most situations either, as you’re not inclined to push this powertrain hard. Similarly, if you do extend the engine past 5,000rpm, you will find a bit more performance, but there are few situations in which you’ll find yourself doing so. 
Official fuel economy for the CVT variants is rated at a respectable 20.07kpl for the Go and 19.41kpl for the larger Go Plus. The 40kg increase in kerb weight across all variants has also resulted in a slight drop in efficiency figures for the manuals, from 19.83kpl to 19.72kpl. 
A light steering and compact dimensions make manoeuvring in tight spaces an easy task. The ride quality is a bit firm but decent for the most part. However, factors like a light build and an engine that runs out of steam at higher speeds blunt the Datsuns’ highway cruising abilities. And though improved compared to the original 2014 car, you can still hear a lot of noise from the road inside the cabin.
Should I buy one?
Datsun has launched the Go and Go Plus automatics only in the top two variants – T and T(O) – with prices starting at Rs 5.94 lakh and Rs 6.58 lakh, respectively. Consequently, the CVT trims get features like vehicle dynamic control (VDC) and touchscreen infotainment system as standard, with the range-topping T(O) getting the addition of diamond cut alloy wheels and LED DRLs. 
At this price, the Go and Go Plus is the most-affordable CVTs in the market, undercutting the likes of the Nissan Micra, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20 and the Honda Jazz.
At this price point then, the Go CVT makes a strong case for itself by offering a more refined driving experience than most of its AMT equipped rivals – which include the Maruti Suzuki WagonR, Hyundai Santro and Tata Tiago.
The budget offerings from the Japanese automaker have come a long way since they were first launched. With a frugal engine, automatic transmission, competitive price, reasonable space and comfort and decent levels of safety equipment, they come off as a more complete package now. If there wasn’t a compelling reason to buy the Datsuns earlier, perhaps this added convenience of a smooth automatic gearbox at an affordable price will change your mind.

Volkswagen launches Tiguan Allspace, priced at Rs 33.12 lakh in India
German auto major Volkswagen on Friday launched India-specific 7-seater Tiguan Allspace premium SUV in the domestic market priced at Rs 33.12 lakh (ex-showroom).
The new offering from Volkswagen, which comes with a 2-litre BS-VI-compliant engine, is an extended version of the 5-seater Tiguan. It is available in the market at a price tag of Rs 28.15 lakh -Rs 31.54 lakh (ex-showroom India).
The all-new Tiguan Allspace was showcased at last month’s Auto Expo in Greater Noida along with three other SUVs as part of the company’s India 2.0 and SUVW strategy.
“The Tiguan Allspace is one of our most successful carlines globally and we are extremely delighted to launch the car for our Indian customers,” Steffen Knapp, director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, said here.
The Tiguan Allspace launch comes close on the heels of the company rolling out the BS-VI versions of its hatchback Polo and midsize sedan Vento.
It is the first SUV that is being launched under Volkswagen’s SUV offensive strategy and suits the needs of every Indian customer, Knapp added.
Built on Volkswagen’s MQB platform, the Tiguan Allspace has a longer wheelbase and comes with a host of standard comfort and safety features such as Airbags, electric parking brakes, Rear view camera, seatbelt reminder, digital cockpit, and easy open electric boot, among others.
The new Tiguan Allspace will also come as a completely knocked-down (CKD) unit and there carries a premium price tag.
“It is equipped with a powerful 2.0-litre TSI engine and is mated to a 7-speed DSG 4-motion transmission, which enhances the driving comfort for the customer while being fuel efficient in nature. We’re extremely confident that the sophisticated 7-seater Tiguan Allspace will be a winner among many Indian customers,” Knapp said.
He reiterated Volkswagen’s plan to roll out four SUVs, including the Allspace launched on Friday, in India within the next two years.
Knapp said Volkswagen wants to be a sustainable brand and improve customer support, adding the total cost of ownership is being looked at in a 360 approach.
Reduction in total cost of ownership with 4EVERcare has gone down by 30 per cent, he added.
The TSI technology, according to the company, is a key component for the brands’ powertrain and fuel strategy and has many advantages include the engines compact design which enables a high-power drivability, more performance, and less fuel consumption with an excellent fuel economy.
The Allspace will compete against other special utility vehicles (SUVs) in the segment, including Skoda Kodiaq, Honda CR-V, Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner, and Mahindra’s Alturas G4, among others.
In 2018, the VW Group had announced investments of around Rs 8,000 crore in the country till 2021 under its India 2.0 project, while giving Czech firm Skoda Auto the responsibility to take the lead to achieve a combined target of 5 per cent market share of the total domestic passenger vehicle segment by 2025.
Of this, Volkswagen alone is looking to corner 3 per cent market share as against around 1 per cent at present.
The company has merged its three Indian entities — Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd, Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt Ltd and Skoda Auto India Pvt Ltd — for greater synergies and faster decision-making.
The merged entity, which is called Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd, will develop six cars for domestic and export markets.

Maruti Suzuki launched Ertiga in April 2012 & it quickly became one of the most popular cars in the Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MPV) segment in India. Cars like Honda BR-V, Toyota Innova Crysta and the recently launched Mahindra Marazzo populate this segment. Now comes the New Ertiga 2018.

They unveiled the New Ertiga 2018 in Indonesia earlier and launched it in select ASEAN markets. This led to car experts testing the car out before it hits Indian streets.

New Ertiga 2018 is Bigger and It Looks Better …The NEXT-Gen Ertiga is longer, wider, taller and offers more space and comfort with aspirational styling. It promises to be a stylish 7-seater car that will suit new-age customers’ lifestyle. The New Ertiga is 100mm longer and 40mm wider than the previous model. The wheelbase of 2,740mm remains the same. They have increased the boot space by 18-litres.
This model poses a more muscular & upright look with the bonnet sitting higher similar to an SUV. They conceptualized it on Suzuki’s acclaimed 5th Generation Heartect platform which employs high tensile steel on all the right parts to enhance overall safety. Thus it ensures maximum rigidity, effective crash absorption, and NVH performance. It also gives a bigger cabin with more legroom for the second & third seating rows than the older version. This is the same platform that the Swift, Dzire and Baleno cars are based on.

The NEXT-Gen Ertiga will be available in K15B Smart Hybrid Petrol with a1.5-litre, four-cylinder Engine that is 88cc larger than the outgoing model. It generates a maximum power of 105bhp @ 6000 rpm with a Torque of 138nm @ 4400 rpm. They engineered the all-new K15 Petrol Engine of new Ertiga to deliver remarkable performance while ensuring a pleasurable driving experience for all.
This engine will come with a 6-speed Manual transmission as well as a 4-speed Automatic transmission for effortless driving in city traffic.
The DDiS 200 Smart Hybrid Diesel engine is a 1.3-litre diesel, a four-cylinder engine which has been developed in-house by Maruti Suzuki. This engine will deliver a maximum power of 90bhp @ 4000 rpm with a Torque of 200nm @ 1750 rpm as compared to the 88.5bhp delivered by the earlier version.
The new engine will come with a 5-speed Manual transmission.

The most striking difference in The New Ertiga 2018 compared to the previous version are the dynamic & impressive character lines. 10 Cars At Auto Expo 2018 That Will Launch By 2020
You can count the cars launched at the Auto Expo on your fingers, but there’s a big a list of cars which were showcased and are set to be launched in the country by 2020
The top-of-the-line version of the eco-friendly BMW is presented in its exclusive E-Copper Metallic at the Auto Expo 2018 and is scheduled to be launched in the country by the end of 2018. The BMW i8 Roadster, the i8 Coupe will be the halo of the brand “i” “They must be carriers of future technology, such as large rechargeable batteries, electric motors, small turbochargers, hybrid components and light-weight structures. Auto Expo Expected To Be Launched BMW kept the clipper doors and flight supports while making some changes to incorporate the removable cloth cap (which folds / unfolds in 15 seconds). The i8 Roadster is two pure seats, unlike the Coupé, a two-seat arrangement.
The BMW i8 Roadster contains devices similar to Coupe, but has obvious changes, mainly due to open configuration. The weight was increased by 60 kg due to reinforcements made in the carbon fiber structure, and additional mechanisms added to the extension protection and folding cloth roof. The larger 34 Ah battery, higher than the previous 20 Ah unit, improves the electric range only from 35 to 53 km. The compact drive performance numbers, consisting of a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder petrol engine and an electric motor, are 374 horsepower, with time from 0 to 100 from 4.6 seconds, 0.2 seconds slower than a coupe.
Honda is amazing
The second generation of the Honda Amaze is centrally located at the Honda booth at the Auto Expo 2018 and will be launched in India in early 2019. Honda says the second generation Amaze is based on a completely new platform, unlike the earlier model, which was based on the Brio platform hatchback. This allowed a larger wheelbase among other non-dimensional changes that should lead to better interior space.
The design is bolder, and the soft lines inspired by the hatchback of the old car are replaced by an almost muscular position like a SUV. Major changes include exterior headlamps with larger LED DRL, large chrome-plated chassis in the form of a “wing”, a clamshell head cover, a roof line with a slippery slope, a deep shoulder line in the side, large rear lights and a spoiler mounted on the lips. From the inside, the dashboard has been fully revised and conforms to Honda’s new design language used in other models such as the Honda CR-V and the Honda Civic.
Honda also confirmed that the new Amaze will also be offered with varying degrees of CVT diesel. We expect to introduce 1.2 liter and 4-cylinder petrol engines and 1.5-liter turbo diesel engines in the new Amaze engine with some modifications to improve efficiency and reduce emissions.
Hyundai Kona is the first Hyundai to offer its new Fluidic design philosophy: breaking the traditional Hyundai design for a strong design of love or hate. It will also be the first full EV electric vehicle Hyundai launches in India if everything goes according to plan. The network is in cascade, the high-DRL mode where the headlights are traditionally placed, the large headlights are placed down in the front fascia, the bold wheel arches and the rear design mimics the foreground, etc. It is the highlight of the new Kuna. The model exhibited at the Auto Expo Expected To Be Launched included a collection of characters inspired by Marvel Iron Man characters, with gray and metallic red paint alongside the iconic icon of the box in the spotlight.
Kia SP Concept
Kia offered a large part of its international collection at the Auto Expo 2018; from the 4-door flagship Stinger Pavilion to the Picanto Hatchback, Kia showed everyone what they could offer in their latest international market. The highlight of the Check Out the Top Cars of the Auto Expo show was the SP Concept, an introduction to a compact SUV that will be the company’s first product in 2019.
Kia SP Concept shows a new vision of Kia’s design philosophy, which traditionally uses many curves. Concept SP is more laminated, giving it an old look for SUVs rather than the intersection. Kia “Tiger Nose” are present, as well as DRL lamps placed on headlamps placed vertically. The design is quieter, and therefore closer to production, moving to the side and back; the window line with wrinkles in the rear glass chamber, the corresponding color ceiling and the high back lights will require minor changes.
There is no confirmation of the engines, transmission and transmission systems to be used by Kia SP Concept.
Mahindra Rexton
Mahindra introduced the SsangYong G4 Rexton at Auto Expo, and is expected to launch in India a new gala when launched in India during the holiday season. To be placed above the XUV500, the Rexton can be called the XUV700 and faces the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavor and the like.
With a length of about 5 meters and a width of 2 meters and a height of 1.8 meters, Mahindra Rexton (or XUV700) will be on par with the seven-seater SUV. Features such as projector headlamps, 9.2-inch touch screen entertainment system, 360 ° camera, cooled seats, and electric rear door in Sang Yong Rikston, Mahindra can choose to keep many of them to convert to a value display in the section.
SsangYong offers a single diesel engine at Rexton, a 2.2 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that develops 178 hp of maximum power and 420 Nm of torque. This can be brought to India with minor adjustments to improve efficiency or driving ability and pair it with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed automatic transmission. Mahindra is expected to install Rexton in India to maintain its competitive price.
Maruti Suzuki Future Concept — S
While the Check Out the Top Cars of the Auto Expo of the new Maruti Suzuki Swift could have been the focus of attention on the second day of the Auto Expo 2018, Concept Future-S was the one who stole the thunder on the first day. Below for the brand and also dictates the design direction taken by the company in the future in general.
Vertical position, high hood, wide body and high ground clearance for proper passage. Highlights include LED headlights, mixed mesh, long liner and front front bumper for the old semi-vertical school with few body lines. Future-S can create a competitor for the Renault Kwid, with the latest in Maruti Suzuki Alto sales.
Inside, Future-S features luxurious elements such as the chassis panels on the dashboard, a large central console dominated by a multi-circular circular display and a square direction. Based on the Heartec platform that also supports the Swift twin, the production version of Future-S can be run by new diesel and gasoline engines manufactured at home by Maruti / Suzuki.

Datsun has used the SA Festival of Motoring as a platform to launch its latest budget offering, the GO+ MPV
It has been two years since Datsun made its comeback to the South African market with the budget-friendly (and popular) Datsun GO compact hatchback. Now, the GO+ has been introduced adding some versatility and roominess to the lineup.
The Datsun GO+ will be offered either as a 5+2 family MPV (7 seats in total) or as a panel van, named the GO+ Panel Van. Vincent Cobee, global head of Datsun was at Kyalami for the unwrapping and said, “The plus edition of the Datsun GO, will create its own unique sub-segment (within the upper A-segment/ lower B-segment), as a versatile multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) offering motorists exceptional value, fuel economy and maintenance at an attractive price. These have all been the hallmarks of Datsun since its re-entry into the country.”
The GO+ will continue to use the same 1.2-litre petrol unit as the standard GO. A total output of 50 kW and 104 Nm hardly seems much for a vehicle that's intended to carry 7 people with luggage, but we'll hopefully be able to test the GO+'s abilities for ourselves soon. Speaking of luggage, with the rear seats folded (5-seater mode) the GO+ is claimed to offer a very reasonable 347 litres of load space.
The major drawcard of this MPV is the price, Datsun. Compared to other 7-seater MPVs like the Toyota Avanza, Honda Mobilio and Suzuki Ertiga, it’s extremely keenly priced.

First Drive: 2019 Honda Pilot
The 2019 Honda Pilot is a vehicle that epitomizes what’s become known as the mid-cycle refresh. An automaker launches a new-generation model to great fanfare and builds it for roughly three years. Then it tarts it up some before selling it for another three or so. Hence, we have the “new” 2019 Pilot. It doesn’t matter if it needs to be changed; it must be changed, because without change, apparently, we wither and die. (Or at the very least a bunch of people would be out of work.)
Sure, some of the updates to the refreshed Honda Pilot are welcome, like the upgraded stereo (the volume knob returns!) and improvements to its optional 9-speed transmission. And the addition of standard equipment like the Honda Sensing safety suite is to be applauded. But did Honda really need to futz with the Pilot’s front- and rear-end styling and a few interior trim bits? Not so much. Really, these are all changes that could have easily been added here and there, but then there wouldn’t be “new” one to market to customers, would there?
As you can probably guess by now, our drive of the 2019 Pilot wasn’t so much a revelation as it was a recitation of what the Pilot already does well. What is that you ask? For one thing, it seats seven (or eight) people in reasonable comfort. That’s no minor feat: To fit that many adult humans into a vehicle without torturing them, you generally need one of those Expedition-sized family trucksters. But the Pilot is one of only a handful of crossovers with a third-row capable pulling it off. (Bonus: There’s still adequate cargo room with the third-row seat in place.)
The Pilot also drives pretty well under the right conditions. It has a light-on-its-feet feel that’s become a Honda trademark, which is all the more impressive given that we’re talking about a two-ton crossover. Honda has also done a great job dialing in the Pilot’s steering feel without overboosting it or eliminating on-center feedback. Dive into the curves at speeds that will make the kids throw up, and the Pilot’s body simply refuses to lean. It’s as if it built the damn thing with a cement foundation.
For the record though, I think Honda cheated some by having us pilot the Pilot on some of Southern California’s smoother roadways. The first time I drove the 2016 Pilot—when this generation really was all-new—it was on the well-paved roads of Kentucky, and I was impressed. But the second time I drove it was on the choppy pavement of New York City’s suburbs, and even the smallest potholes unsettled it. We had a thousand-mile road trip on the frost-heaved roads of upstate New York ahead of us, and my wife was not thrilled: “I thought you said this thing would be comfortable!” I still shudder at the memory of her withering glare.
Will the 2019 Pilot exhibit the same rough ride quality over bad roads that I encountered? The chief engineer told us that other than improved brakes, there are no serious changes to the chassis, so we imagine it will. Still, we’d have to dispatch one to Todd Lassa or Jamie Kitman, our men in Detroit and New York respectively, to find out for sure.
One thing that did (sort of) impress me is how well the 9-speed automatic performed. After taking some criticism for its operation, Honda says it made extensive hardware and software changes to the transmission for the 2019 Pilot, and routine driving is greatly improved. Nine-speed Pilots now accelerate smoothly from a stop, and part-throttle power demands are met with a crisp downshift.
Still, it isn’t perfect. Stomping the throttle on the highway often led to lazy feeling, two-step downshifts. And we experienced some hesitation when we floored the go pedal from a dead stop (especially when auto stop/start was engaged). It is worth noting that the ZF sourced 9-speed, which is only available for the top trim Pilot Elite (other trims continue to employ the Honda-built 6-speed auto), is the only transmission Honda has ever outsourced; usually it designs its own. Lesson learned, maybe?
The engine to which both transmissions are strapped is a carryover—Honda’s well-worn 3.5 liter V-6. Horsepower is 280, unchanged since 2016. It’s adequate, to be sure, but with a horsepower race going on elsewhere in the industry, it may have been a mistake for Honda not to rework it in order to give it some more grunt.
Besides the updated transmission, Honda was eager to shine more light on the the torque-vectoring ability of the Pilot’s all-wheel-drive system, so it set up an off-road course that involved lots of body-bending, wheel-lifting dips and ruts. It was an impressive display. The Pilot was steady on its feet and did a good job distributing power where needed, even with one paw hanging in the air. Yes, we know, few Pilot owners will be doing any serious off-roading. But it’s very likely they’ll be driving their Pilots in snow and rain, and that same ability to find grip and avoid slip will serve the Pilot driver well when Mother Nature gets a bug up her caboose.
In case you didn’t already know, the Honda Pilot will also tow: 3,500 lb out of the box and 5,000 lb with the addition of a transmission cooler, and yes, Honda wanted us to experience that, too. So it set up a Civic race car on an aluminum trailer for a Pilot to tow, a combination it said weighed about 3,900 lb. I’m something of a trailering snob, critical of even the slightest sign of instability. But I was truly impressed with how well the Pilot handled the load; power, stability, and braking were as good as advertised.
Inside, the interior has been revamped with a new (and slightly less sensible to us) gauge cluster and—Heaven be praised!—a new stereo with a real-live volume knob. (Honda took some flak from customers and the press when it went without volume knobs on some of its recent models, and has been rolling them back out.) Other than that, changes to the dash are minimal. The easy-to-use climate controls, big cup holders, and center console storage cubby large enough to hide a toddler all remain.
More importantly, Honda has made its HondaSensing safety suite—collision warning with automatic braking, road- and lane-departure assistance, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams—standard on all Pilots. Hopefully other manufacturers will follow Honda’s lead and make these important safety features standard on lower-priced models.
All Pilot trim levels get a smattering of new equipment. Among the bits and bobs you’ll find in different models: Cabin Control, which lets back-seaters use their smartphone as a remote for the rear-seat entertainment system; CabinTalk, one of those voice-of-God features that lets the folks in front be heard in the back; a hands-free power tailgate; and a wireless charging pad.
Did the Pilot need any major revamping? The only real issues we’ve experienced since the present generation’s debut has been its rough road ride quality, which Honda didn’t address, and the mixed bag that is the 9-speed transmission. Other than that, it’s been well equipped to take on the competition for several years now. But that competition is tough and getting tougher all the time: The good-to-drive Volkswagen Atlas, uber-roomy Chevrolet Traverse, upscale Mazda CX-9, competent Ford Explorer, and promising new Subaru Ascent are all impressive rivals for the Pilot to face down. So maybe a “new” Pilot isn’t such a bad thing, after all.
Ultimately, your choice may come down to locale. If you live in an area where the roads are messy (hello, Michigan) the Honda may prove to be too much of a rough rider. First Drive: 2019 Honda Pilot
The 2019 Honda Pilot is a vehicle that epitomizes what’s become known as the mid-cycle refresh. An automaker launches a new-generation model to great fanfare and builds it for roughly three years. Then it tarts it up some before selling it for another three or so. Hence, we have the “new” 2019 Pilot. It doesn’t matter if it needs to be changed; it must be changed, because without change, apparently, we wither and die. (Or at the very least a bunch of people would be out of work.)
Sure, some of the updates to the refreshed Honda Pilot are welcome, like the upgraded stereo (the volume knob returns!) and improvements to its optional 9-speed transmission. And the addition of standard equipment like the Honda Sensing safety suite is to be applauded. But did Honda really need to futz with the Pilot’s front- and rear-end styling and a few interior trim bits? Not so much. Really, these are all changes that could have easily been added here and there, but then there wouldn’t be “new” one to market to customers, would there?
As you can probably guess by now, our drive of the 2019 Pilot wasn’t so much a revelation as it was a recitation of what the Pilot already does well. What is that you ask? For one thing, it seats seven (or eight) people in reasonable comfort. That’s no minor feat: To fit that many adult humans into a vehicle without torturing them, you generally need one of those Expedition-sized family trucksters. But the Pilot is one of only a handful of crossovers with a third-row capable pulling it off. (Bonus: There’s still adequate cargo room with the third-row seat in place.)
The Pilot also drives pretty well under the right conditions. It has a light-on-its-feet feel that’s become a Honda trademark, which is all the more impressive given that we’re talking about a two-ton crossover. Honda has also done a great job dialing in the Pilot’s steering feel without overboosting it or eliminating on-center feedback. Dive into the curves at speeds that will make the kids throw up, and the Pilot’s body simply refuses to lean. It’s as if it built the damn thing with a cement foundation.
For the record though, I think Honda cheated some by having us pilot the Pilot on some of Southern California’s smoother roadways. The first time I drove the 2016 Pilot—when this generation really was all-new—it was on the well-paved roads of Kentucky, and I was impressed. But the second time I drove it was on the choppy pavement of New York City’s suburbs, and even the smallest potholes unsettled it. We had a thousand-mile road trip on the frost-heaved roads of upstate New York ahead of us, and my wife was not thrilled: “I thought you said this thing would be comfortable!” I still shudder at the memory of her withering glare.
Will the 2019 Pilot exhibit the same rough ride quality over bad roads that I encountered? The chief engineer told us that other than improved brakes, there are no serious changes to the chassis, so we imagine it will. Still, we’d have to dispatch one to Todd Lassa or Jamie Kitman, our men in Detroit and New York respectively, to find out for sure.
One thing that did (sort of) impress me is how well the 9-speed automatic performed. After taking some criticism for its operation, Honda says it made extensive hardware and software changes to the transmission for the 2019 Pilot, and routine driving is greatly improved. Nine-speed Pilots now accelerate smoothly from a stop, and part-throttle power demands are met with a crisp downshift.
Still, it isn’t perfect. Stomping the throttle on the highway often led to lazy feeling, two-step downshifts. And we experienced some hesitation when we floored the go pedal from a dead stop (especially when auto stop/start was engaged). It is worth noting that the ZF sourced 9-speed, which is only available for the top trim Pilot Elite (other trims continue to employ the Honda-built 6-speed auto), is the only transmission Honda has ever outsourced; usually it designs its own. Lesson learned, maybe?
The engine to which both transmissions are strapped is a carryover—Honda’s well-worn 3.5 liter V-6. Horsepower is 280, unchanged since 2016. It’s adequate, to be sure, but with a horsepower race going on elsewhere in the industry, it may have been a mistake for Honda not to rework it in order to give it some more grunt.
Besides the updated transmission, Honda was eager to shine more light on the the torque-vectoring ability of the Pilot’s all-wheel-drive system, so it set up an off-road course that involved lots of body-bending, wheel-lifting dips and ruts. It was an impressive display. The Pilot was steady on its feet and did a good job distributing power where needed, even with one paw hanging in the air. Yes, we know, few Pilot owners will be doing any serious off-roading. But it’s very likely they’ll be driving their Pilots in snow and rain, and that same ability to find grip and avoid slip will serve the Pilot driver well when Mother Nature gets a bug up her caboose.
In case you didn’t already know, the Honda Pilot will also tow: 3,500 lb out of the box and 5,000 lb with the addition of a transmission cooler, and yes, Honda wanted us to experience that, too. So it set up a Civic race car on an aluminum trailer for a Pilot to tow, a combination it said weighed about 3,900 lb. I’m something of a trailering snob, critical of even the slightest sign of instability. But I was truly impressed with how well the Pilot handled the load; power, stability, and braking were as good as advertised.
Inside, the interior has been revamped with a new (and slightly less sensible to us) gauge cluster and—Heaven be praised!—a new stereo with a real-live volume knob. (Honda took some flak from customers and the press when it went without volume knobs on some of its recent models, and has been rolling them back out.) Other than that, changes to the dash are minimal. The easy-to-use climate controls, big cup holders, and center console storage cubby large enough to hide a toddler all remain.
More importantly, Honda has made its HondaSensing safety suite—collision warning with automatic braking, road- and lane-departure assistance, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams—standard on all Pilots. Hopefully other manufacturers will follow Honda’s lead and make these important safety features standard on lower-priced models.
All Pilot trim levels get a smattering of new equipment. Among the bits and bobs you’ll find in different models: Cabin Control, which lets back-seaters use their smartphone as a remote for the rear-seat entertainment system; CabinTalk, one of those voice-of-God features that lets the folks in front be heard in the back; a hands-free power tailgate; and a wireless charging pad.
Did the Pilot need any major revamping? The only real issues we’ve experienced since the present generation’s debut has been its rough road ride quality, which Honda didn’t address, and the mixed bag that is the 9-speed transmission. Other than that, it’s been well equipped to take on the competition for several years now. But that competition is tough and getting tougher all the time: The good-to-drive Volkswagen Atlas, uber-roomy Chevrolet Traverse, upscale Mazda CX-9, competent Ford Explorer, and promising new Subaru Ascent are all impressive rivals for the Pilot to face down. So maybe a “new” Pilot isn’t such a bad thing, after all.
Ultimately, your choice may come down to locale. If you live in an area where the roads are messy (hello, Michigan) the Honda may prove to be too much of a rough rider. Still, its combination of a roomy interior, mostly-usable third-row seat, and a reputation for epic reliability make it an appealing choice. Not very terribly exciting, but definitely appealing.

This version has head lights with LED daytime running lights, skid plates and 17 inch alloy wheels. The overall look is quite stylish and attractive. The interiors are equally cosy and comfortable. The seats are of high quality fabric upholstery and it has all the upgraded technology like Fm, Radio, USB Port, Bluetooth etc. The higher variants have the CD and MP3 player.
The engine of the SUV is equally impressive. The diesel variants have 1.5 litre of petrol engine which produces a maximum power of 112 PS at 6300 rpm along with maximum torque of 140 Nm at 4400 rpm. The SUV Duster is a master piece of the French company Renault and it became NDTV Car of the year in 2013. The DDiS 200 Smart Hybrid Diesel engine is a 1.3-litre diesel, a four-cylinder engine which has been developed in-house by Maruti Suzuki. This engine will deliver a maximum power of 90bhp @ 4000 rpm with a Torque of 200nm @ 1750 rpm as compared to the 88.5bhp delivered by the earlier version.

The high-end eco-friendly BMW is being showcased in its exclusive Metallic E-Copper at Top 8 Cars of the Auto Expo and its launch in the country is scheduled for the end of 2018. According to Honda, the second generation of Amazon relies on a brand new platform , unlike the previous model based on the Brio hatchback platform. This allowed a larger wheelbase among other nonspecific dimensional changes that should lead to a better interior space.
The bolder design, the soft lines inspired by the hatchback of the old car are replaced by an almost muscular position like an SUV. The most important changes on the outside are the larger headlights with DRL LED, the large chrome structure of the grid-like “grid”, the oyster shell, the roof line with the slippery slope, the deep line to wear on the side, the large tail lights and the spoiler. From the inside, the dashboard has been completely redesigned and conforms to Honda’s new design language used in other models such as the Honda CR-V and the Honda Civic.
