“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” is unironically a great time and I adore how faithful it is to actual DnD mechanics. Sure, the druid shouldn’t be able to turn into an owlbear but everyone’s pointed that out ahead of time. No one prepared me for the nerdy joy of being able to sit there and list off identifiable spells like “oh shit, green flame blade! Reverse gravity! Prestidigitation! OTTILUKE’S RESILIENT SPHERE! AAAA” Plus you could see people playing the game. When somebody rolls a Nat 1, what things are in-game jokes (You just know the whole table was screaming ”FAT BOYYYY” during That One Part.) I was expecting Guardians of the Galaxy levels of snark and not taking itself seriously but it really was very earnest and that was surprisingly refreshing. 10/10 movie I loved it ;u;

Any passionate hot-takes or thoughts on The Legend of Vox Machina animated series? Anything you didn't like or thought could've been handled better or didn't grip you as much as you thought it might? Anything you thought they did really well that the fandom doesn't agree with you on?

Hi anon, I would recommend you check the "tlovm" and "tlovm spoilers" tags on my blog if you want any detailed analysis because it's been like 6-7 months since I watched it. Overall I liked it a lot. Based on a quick skim of those tags myself, and what I remembered offhand:

I am, on the whole, extremely in favor of the adaptational changes made. I think the writer's room understood the challenges of adapting something so long and extensive into the small chunk of time they had, and the choices (notably: the party split, the Osysa scene being much more confrontational/Kash and Zahra being less friendly, Grog's plot, and moving the Feywild to pre-Umbrasyl with all the implications that has for Vex's plot) were well done. One of my only small complaints is that while I get why the Kamaljiori scene was drastically changed for the sake of the adaptation, I do prefer both the puzzle of the original campaign and the fact that he wasn't killed.

In an interesting parallel to some of the ongoing Campaign 3 discussions, I think I diverged from a segment of the fandom in being strongly in favor of Vex's plot. This is honestly not specific to TLOVM; I watched Campaign 1 after it aired but the discourse surrounding Vex has always been tricky. The thing about Vex is the thing about all of Laura's characters, as others have said: for some reason, she tends to be treated as the self-insert player of the fandom. For Vex, I think this is also muddied by the fact that her most obvious "negative" trait, her issues with money, has been accepted for what it is, namely, the result of a life of poverty. However, perhaps because it was more compressed and obvious in TLOVM vs the more spread-out over time nature of C1, people really didn't like how much Vex cares about the opinions of Vax, Percy, and especially her father. I think a lot of people really wish Vex were Vax But A Woman, to be honest (though often those people do not like Vax...there's a whole other thing about how few people in the fandom manage to actually like both twins as individuals; either people love one and hate the other or are those "omg TWINNIES! and then one dies? and one lives? the MOST tragedy of tragedies" weirdos whom I have to assume actual twins would probably find kind of creepy), and TLOVM definitely brought those ones out.

OVERALL THOUGHTS

I took last year off from writing because I had a lot going on (new jorb, getting on ADHD meds, pursuing other creative endeavors, I just didn't feel like it), but it's really good to get back to it. In a lot of ways it's like learning how to do it all over again. Having an approximation of neurotypical function has been interesting, because I can just… stop? And pick up the next day? And not have to try and keep pace with my hyperfocus to finish before I got bored like I used to? It is wild, and I’m still figuring out how it works.

And because I took last year off, there was a lot of going through unfinished stuff and finally getting it out the door (hence all the Good Omens). That was satisfying, but I'm glad to have a mostly clear plate now.

And what is now apparently perpetual copypasta: If, despite everything, you were able to produce work this year, congratulations. And if you couldn't, that's okay too. Next year will hopefully be better.

PERSONAL BEST/FAVORITE

A tossup between when the lights come on I’ll be ready for this and in the shape of things to come (too much poison come undone. Shang-Chi is a movie that is close to me and my experience and it was extremely gratifying to put so much of things I know and value into it. And because I am always contrary, I wanted to write a not-really fix-it for Ed and Stede. It’s prickly and uncomfortable and emotional, but not without hope, and I like that.

But honestly I felt like I leveled up as a writer in general this year. idk if it's the meds, but everything felt really good to write. Of course I still ran into trouble, but it didn't feel horrifically insurmountable or frustratingly despairing in the same way. Here's hoping it continues.

MOST UNDERAPPRECIATED

Vids never do well on AO3, so I'm not surprised they have low hits and/or kudos. And I worked really hard on them, so go watch them (on AO3, YouTube, whatever).

We've not yet lost all our graces is also extremely niche, and I do want people to read it and tell me if they like it.

Unsurprisingly, the OFMD porn was top in both hits and kudos. But both have sharp teeth got kudos disproportionate to hits. Apparently people want stories about Grace de Pointe du Lac.

Take me to the limit. Is there anything hotter than a guy with rolled-up shirtsleeves? Yeah? Yeah.

MOST FUN STORY TO WRITE

I think I did a good job of writing whatever the fuck I wanted this year, and I had a lot of fun doing it. And people seemed to like some of the more random stuff I threw up on Tumblr, so that was an added bonus. It may be recency bias, but I had an absolute blast writing Blanc. It's always delightful to write characters with distinct voices, and his is extremely distinct.

HARDEST

A toss-up between in the shape of things to come and we've not yet lost all our graces. The stuff was all there, but I could not figure out how to make it flow not just coherently, but in a manner satisfying to me. So that was frustrating and made me grumpy, but I figured it out.

BIGGEST SURPRISE/S

For sure, the Oxventure: Blades in the Dark stories. A non-D&D TTRPG run by a bunch of randos for a UK gaming website? And about two NPCs we never see again? There was no way I could have expected that one.

MOST UNINTENTIONALLY TELLING STORY

Like I say every year, I'm pretty sure all my shit is out in the open. But I will say I took no time with the fall has a surfeit of things I personally find interesting/have been thinking about. For once the whisk(e)y is the least of it.

FAVOURITE LINES/SCENES

He wants to crawl into that feeling and memorize it, that specific sense of comfort, belonging. Of bone-deep certitude even monsters can be—are—loved. (we’ve not yet lost all our graces)

“What did you say to my brother?”

“That I missed his company and wished to see him.” To Grace’s surprise, there is no affectation. “I realize now it was a poor time and place to do so, but sometimes the yearning, the desire to be close to… a friend. It can make even sensible men stupid. And I am not a sensible man.” (both have sharp teeth)

He rolls up his shirtsleeves, cuffing them neatly just under his elbows. It is practiced, easy in a way that makes Edward wonder what else he can do with those dexterous hands. (take me to the limit, hold me down there)

“Now that I’m to get a lecture it’s Phillip?”

“Lecture is such a stuffy word. Call it a gentle reminder of things that should be more prominent in your memory.” Blanc’s kind of a shit too, and god help him, Phillip is into it. (I took no time with the fall)

2023 WRITING AMBITIONS

As always, a look at previous goals:

Finish thicker than water, stronger than wine

I'm still gonna! I've even picked at it a little! Maybe when they finally announce a date for Good Omens S2. Although I'm sure everybody who was interested in it has given up hope of it ever getting finished, which is fair.

Make a working version of the transcription and captioning tool

That totally did not happen and I intend to pick this up again. And now that work has given me more knowledge of AWS, I'm hoping this is something I'm better equipped to tackle.

Learn Davinci Resolve. Like for reals this time

A year later than expected, but yes! As I mentioned in the vid notes for gay bar, the sheer ridiculousness of the vid made it easier to fuck around and experiment. I am trying to carry that mindset into any vids I may make next year.

Things I want to do next year:

Make two vids. I have a lot of ideas kicking around for more OFMD ones, and I would like to make at least one IWTV one.

Make a working prototype of the transcription/captioning tool

I am aware neither of these things are writing related, but oh well. I'll figure it out.

Finished watching Dragon Age Absolution.

My biggest take away is that it feels like it was made as Game Bait.

Like it was made to up the hype about Tevinter and the idea of a game being set there. When the Nessum title card came up my first thought was how people might react if Nessum is an in-game location in DA: Dreadwolf.

The series is six 25min long episodes and so it has to fit A Lot in since 1. The world of dragon age is pretty expansive at this point, and on top of that this is set in a place we haven't actually been to in the games, and 2. It's trying to have a very personality packed ensemble cast. This means the pacing can be a little... meh. It also means that some of the major beats feel like they only get the minimum or not quite enough set up before we get sent barreling into them.

The characters are all very intense. Some of them could even be called bombastic. Combined with how the show animates the fights and magic, there were times were it felt like their lighter moments were just trying to copy the tone of The Legend Of Vox Machina's lighter moments. The different personalities of the characters do at least help them stand on their own a little more.

The strong characterisation is kind of a double edged sword. For the most part its a great thing. All of the major players feel like they have a fleshed out idea behind them and in fact come into the story feeling like they are already very established.

Which is were it becomes a double edged sword. This story and the stories of their characters is starting at a point that feels like the beginning of the middle more than it does the beginning of the start. This isn't surprising considering how little time they had to work with, it's a common bit of advice for writers to start where the action starts to both save time and get the audience hooked. Honestly I didn't mind it too much but my friend found it nearly unwatchable because she didn't feel like she'd had enough time to figure out whether she liked or cared about the characters all while the characters were rushing ahead acting on motives and instincts the audience hadn't seen them develop or had explained where they came from.

I think part of the reason my viewing experience was so different to hers is because what they did isn't too dissimilar to action heist films like Oceans 8 where someone puts together a team of experts and since we've already been told they are meant to be experts we don't pause to question the whys and hows of their talents and drives.

The only real differences are that in DA:A the object being stolen is magic relic which raises questions about the motives of the group hired to go after it, that the series barely answers and only where its convenient, and also the framing and time given to the antagonist of the show and the fact that the primary main character wants nothing to do with the fucker rather than looking to spite him with the successful heist.

I think if the show had been given a few more episodes, maybe a typical 12 ep run for short animes, but even 8 or 10 might have been enough to give the story the space it needed to nail flimsier character and plot beats and make the story feel smoother.

Overall I think it was ambitious and moderately entertaining, but fell short of its potential because of it's limited run, and as a result the finished product just feels like its trying to generate interest for the upcoming dragon age game and serve as bait for a sequel.

At least I hope that ending was supposed to bait a sequel. If it was supposed to be setting the stage for the beginning of the game I am going to be annoyed. I hate when games and shows require homework to make their plots make sense.

Definitely scolds you about hiding this from her. I mean you’re in pain! She never wants you to be in pain when she could try helping!

Keyleth is a druid so she probably knows how to make some balms or ointment to help your skin out. 

Would also be more than happy to give you some light healing too if the pain gets to be too bad.

But really, S/O. From now on if you’re hurting then let her know immediately! She knows it can be difficult with self consciousness, but she knows all about being self conscious so she doesn’t want you to feel that with her!!

Percy

Honestly, he’s a bit offended that you tried to hide this from him. Did you think he’d think less of you because of a skin condition? Have you not seen how many issues he has?? 

Percy is (was) a rich boy, he’ll use his money to see what the best ointments are or take you to some good doctors.

Or he’ll ask Keyleth or Pike for assistance if you’re more comfortable with those two.

Seriously, he’ll scold you for hiding your pain from him. Sure, he’s not one to talk about hiding things, but this is something that can easily be treated with patience and money. One of which he has a lot of and the other he’s trying.

Pike

Pike is a bit confused when she learns that you’re hiding this from her. I mean, she is a cleric and can fix you up real easily with a spell!

When you explain it’s out of self consciousness then she’ll understand, but she still doesn’t like the idea of you being in pain when she could be helping you.

Seriously, she’ll do some healing magic to help you in the meantime and then see if Keyleth could help or if she can find any books on salves or balms to help as well.

Tells you that no matter what, if you’re hurting then she wants to know. You have no reason to be self conscious when it comes to your health.

Akira

Has a frown on his face when he realizes how much pain you’re in. He knows a doctor, S/O. He could’ve easily gone and tried to get some medicine for you.

Of course you probably have to be with him to see Takemi so she can really look at your skin. He’ll be by your side the whole time though to give you support.

Would go with you to any dermatologist appointment that’ll help you. Will happily buy you any over-the-counter ointment that’s recommended.
