The story of how soulmates came to be was tragic. That’s how Hope always saw it. She couldn’t imagine being torn apart and separated from your true other half.

But on the other hand, for her, she wondered if that was for the better. Hope had that thought whenever she saw Josie in the halls of the Salavator school.

Josie smiling, laughing, giggling and sometimes even ducking her head with a cute pink flush to her cheeks.

Hope's hand unconsciously ran across her collarbone, the spot hidden by her shirt where she knew Josie's name was burned into her skin.

It didn’t make sense, and that’s one reason she thinks they were torn apart. Soulmates to be specific. If they were one, if the stories are true on how soulmates exist, then Hope was all the bad parts.

She was the dark, the sad, the anger, the burden, the monster. Josie on the other hand was all the light parts. The happiness, the bliss, that free feeling Hope has never truly felt.

So a part of her thought it was better, because if they were one, then Josie wouldn’t be Josie and that girl deserved to be the bright side of things.

Her arms crossed her chest as soon as brown eyes found her. Josie caught her, maybe even felt that Hope was watching her but as soon as there eyes connected something changed.

Hope began walking down the hall quickly. She was grateful that she could easily disappear among the students.

She didn’t need to make Josie's day bad, that’s not what she wanted and making Josie happy was something Hope would selfishly indulge on.

So that meant sticking to the rules and not being near her, because Josie was better without her.

Just as the universe thought when it tore their souls apart.
